Crown Bakery & Cafe

Our gathering was planned at Evans Lodge but we ended up in Crown Bakery instead due to unforeseen circumstances that the place we initially thought was still operating was no where in our sight. Crown Bakery is located in an old school building, Crown Plaza which is about 8 minutes walk from Botanic Garden. I like the contrast between this modern looking bakery and the rundown building.

Crown Bakery & Cafe
Interior of the bakery looks modern and just by one look at its facade, you can tell that they are selling artisan breads.

Crown Bakery Interior
Coming here for Brunch, Crown recommends the Crown Breakfast. The price might seem abit step for a brunch but portion is good for 2 pax. Look at the centre of the wooden board! The Crown Puff Pastry was the total scene stealer. They recommend to break the edge of the pastry and dip it into the sunny side up's egg yolk!  Served along with the centrepiece crown pastry are,  red wine-braised oxtail, chicken cheese sausage, Canadian back bacon, sauteed mushrooms, baked tomato & mesclun salad as its side.

Crown Breakfast - $29
Since the Crown is for the King, why not try a dish for the queen, the Eggs Benedict. Though the poached egg might be slightly overcooked, I'm still in love with the combination where poached eggs were served with shaved honey baked ham, both sitting on the Crown's fluffy Sourdough English Muffin, coupled with Hollandaise sauce and mesclun Salad as its side. You can choose to have sourdough muffin or multigrain but the former is definitely recommended.

The Queen's Eggs Ben - $15
We had something new from the menu and that would be their Steak Sandwich serving with Mesclun Salad as their side too. Ciabatta was Crown's handcrafted and toasted. What I like best was its mouth watering sirloin steak grilled to medium well perfection, stacked with layers of lettuce, tomatoes and drizzled with onion marmalade and topped with gherkin. Recommended!

Steak Sandwich - $18
What a satisfying branch I had! Having visiting Crown Bakery randomly, its definitely worth going back once more for their branch and sandwiches.

Bing Go Jung

With the amount of heat we had from the weather these days, its hard not to get ourselves stay out of non air-conditioned place, not mentioning cold desserts to cool ourselves from the horrible heat.

Buzzer
Bing Go Jung is located in Bukit Timah Plaza and this Bing Su place is in fact very obvious to the public if you pass by the perimeters of the shopping Centre as they are located out of the shopping building itself. I started noticing Bing Go Jung since last year every time when I drove pass Bukit Timah, heading into the entrance of their carpark.

Bing Go Jung
Surprisingly, the place was empty without any customers taking in consideration to the scorching hot weather. Interior was modern and I was amazed by how they are maximizing the storage place given a very small counter.

Counter
If you were to take a closer look at the wooden chair, you will notice that each and every one was labelled with a name indicating what is inside the storage chair. Items like straw, boxes and serviettes were all part of the storage.

Storage
Very Berry is one of the latest Bingsu in the menu and these berries were generously spreaded across the shaved ice and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Very Berry - $16
Enjoy an additional taste with condensed milk drenched on the bowl of yummy and filled with anti-oxidant fruity flavours. Black and red berries were naturally on the sour side, however the milky sweet taste of ice from the Bing Su had kind of neutralized the level. What I like best is the surprise that Very Berry gave with the little bites of sponge cake that hide among the ice.

Sherwood Snack Bar

We chanced upon Sherwood Snack Bar when we visited the Supermarket in Bukit Timah Plaza sometimes back. Usually in the evenings when we were there for grocery shopping, Sherwood Snack bar would have their food sold out and we could still see the helpers are still busying in the kitchen washing up, marinating the meat, preparing for the next day.

Sherwood Snack Bar
The snack bar sells more than just snacks. In fact, it is a family style cafe (kind of Hong Kong Style to me), where diners can get to sit at the counter for food and the dining area perhaps can only cater up to 10 customers.

They offer food ranging from Economical Rice to noodles and a one stop coffeeshop where you can enjoy your traditional cup of Kopi-O too.

Having ordered their dumplings noodle, I was stunned by the kind of standard that I'm receiving. Texture of the noodles were springy and what's more, the kind of noodles were thinner.

Dumplings Noodle with Mushroom Add Ons - $4
Adding $1 of mushrooms to the delicious plate of home taste noodles was not a bad choice either. Slices of mushrooms were fragrant and from its rich taste, it told us that the mushrooms had been braised for a long time and had well absorbed the gravy. Besides having good impression on the noodles and mushrooms, the shrimp dumplings are also another noteworthy items to talk about. Shrimps were fresh and generous too!

Shrimp Dumplings were good!
Chicken Cutlet Noodle on the other hand was scrumptious! Deep Fried Cutlet may not be piping hot from the oil wok but its crispy texture had my appetite! Really hope to revisit them again!

Zzang Korean Food

This Korean Food Stall had caught our attention as it looked like a pop out stall just besides an escalator. In the modern malls of Singapore nowadays, it is less likely we will see food stalls appearing out of the allocated store spaces but wonderfully in Bukit Timah Plaza, there are a handful of them.

Zzang Korean Food
With no GST as well as extra service charge, it gave us another good reason to dine there on top that they have a reasonably priced dishes on their menu.

Zzang Korean Food Menu

Fried Pork Dumpling was deep fried and served in a crispy money bag shape filled with minced pork. It is best to be eaten with a dab on the black vinegar as given.

Deep Fried Pork Dumpling - $6 (Small)
Kimchi Omlette was pretty decent. While I'm expecting big kimchi pieces to be found in it like those kimchi pancake, it proved me wrong with fine cuts of kimchi bits instead. Eggs were fluffy and definitely go well with the mains.

Kimchi Omlette - $5.50

The korean style of Jjajang spells a difference in the kind of meat used. Instead of having minced meat in a chinese style, Zzang Jjajang Noodle came with meat dices / cubes. Noodle was soft, served with shredded cucumbers and half a boiled egg. Sweet black sauce used in coating the noodle was heavily lavished with sesame seeds to enhance its fragrance.

Zzang Jjajang Noodle / Rice - $9

There are timings between 9am - 11am & 3pm -5pm where you get some dishes at discounted price and Chicken Bulgogi is one of them. With the promotion, it costs $7 instead of $9. Served with plum and short rice grains with generous amount of chicken as well as seaweed added I find that the promotion is quite worthwhile as it comes with a bowl of soup and kimchi as side dish.

Chicken Bulgogi with Soup & Kimchi - $9

Zzang offers a series of simple yet authentic korean food less out the BBQ ones. To enjoy such cuisine without having too much on your pocket, you can try Zzang Korean Food out.
