Unatoto Guoco Tower

Back at Unatoto Guco Tower after my 2023 visit, and I’m excited to explore the latest additions to their menu!

Unatoto Guoco Tower

In contrast to my previous visit, the interior has been updated with faux sakura blossoms and walls fully decorated with printed menus and clippings, creating a lively and thematic atmosphere.

Environment

The updated ambiance isn’t the only change. Let’s check out the latest items they have added to the menu!

Menu

We skipped the alcohol this time, after all, someone had to be behind the wheel. Instead, we opted for a comforting cup of hot green tea, perfect for a cold and rainy day.

Green Tea - $2 (Non Refillable)

No visit to a Japanese restaurant feels complete for my dining partner without a serving of chawanmushi. This one was a standout, expertly steamed with that signature silky texture, featuring familiar favorites like Japanese fish cake and tender chicken.

Chawanmushi - $5.50

We started off with the aburi chashu as an appetizer, and it was beautifully presented. The thin slices of flame-seared pork belly were laid out like petals, each topped with a swirl of creamy mayo and a sprinkle of spring onions. Slightly charred edges added a smoky depth to the tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat. A visually striking and delicious start to the meal!

Aburi Chashu - $7

This Umaki (half portion) stole the spotlight with its perfect texture and presentation. The soft tamago envelops a piece of grilled unagi, bringing a gentle sweetness and umami in every bite. That signature branding on top elevated the visual appeal!

Umaki (Half Size) - $5

The assorted mixed skewers set included four sticks, offering a tasty variety of grilled delights: tender chicken thigh, crispy-edged chicken wing, and a rich, savory unagi skewer. A great choice for sampling different flavors.

Assorted Mix Skewers - $12

The beef curry was a new addition to the menu and came beautifully presented. On the left, tender slices of beef were nestled in a pool of sweet Japanese curry, while a neat portion of rice sat on the right. Finely chopped green spring onions were placed right in the middle, bridging the curry and rice, adding a pop of color and freshness to the dish.

Beef Curry - $19

The starring item is none other than their unagi. The Unajyu Deluxe was a great choice for sharing, especially since we had several other dishes to enjoy. The eel still packed that delicious smoky flavor we loved from before.

Unajyu Deluxe - $23.50

The Salmon and Ikura with Tartar Sauce was another standout new item. The creamy tartar sauce brought a refreshing balance, while the ikura added bursts of umami and texture that made each bite more exciting.

Salmon and Ikura with Tartar Sauce - $15.90

We ended the meal on a refreshing note with the Matcha Warabimochi & Ice Cream served with black honey. The matcha ice cream was smooth and creamy, with none of the usual bitterness, just pure, mellow matcha flavor. The Matcha Warabimochi, on the other hand, had a slight bitter edge, but the drizzle of black honey balanced it out beautifully, tying everything together into a sweet and satisfying finish.

Matcha Warabimochi & Ice Cream with Black Honey - $7.50

On a side note, they offered a complimentary Ebi tempura for customers who left a Google review on the spot—a nice little bonus to end the meal!

Complimentary Ebi Tempura

All in all, it was another enjoyable experience at Unatoto Guoco Tower. Visiting on the weekend turned out to be a great choice, the atmosphere was relaxed, and it wasn’t as crowded as other spots. With thoughtful new menu additions and consistent quality, it’s definitely a place worth revisiting.

Ang Mo Liang Teh

The shop name relates closely to our hearts as this usual description in Dialect usually describes Beer as “Ang Mo Liang Teh”. It is strategically located in CBD. Just imagine that your drinking hole is just around the corner of Eon Shenton. Be it from the taps, bottles of cans, do take a trip down and check it out.

Ang Mo Liang Teh

Here you won’t get to find any carpeted floor or dim lighting. Instead, it was simply furnished with comforting white walls adorned with some dragon murals by local illustrator Tobyato, paying homage to both the beer and the founder, Jerry Yang’s birth year ~ Chinese Year of the Dragon.

Simple Interior

Let’s get transported by the warm, neighbourhood nostalgia that defines AMLT here.

Beer

AMLT is a good place to chill and unwind after a hard day’s of work for both local and imported craft beers at very affordable prices.

Ang Mo Liang Teh in Chinese Characters

Once you step into AMLT, you won’t miss this eye-catching mural on the wall.

When there is beer, we can not less out pairing these drinks with some finger food. We indulged ourselves in their wings and some unctuous Chinese Style BBQ Pork on the Pizza.

Our Beer and Meal

The fusion of our Chinese BBQ Pork, aka Char Siew, on the smoky thin-crust pizza was heavenly. We added some paprika to give our palettes a spicy kick.

With its location, who works around the area is very convenient. Even my friend who works around that area agree that she will be visiting again too.

Hello Arigatou Everton Park

Since everyone was talking about Sandos, we decided to try it out at Hello Arigato. The interior of A Hello Arigato is simple and their concept is making use of locally sourced and freshly imported ingredients. They believe that a great dining experience starts with Hello.

Interior

With limited seating, dining timing is also capped at 45 minutes.

Interior

Milk Doughnuts are available from 0830 Hrs Onwards and are freshly made and best consumed within the day of purchase. They offer a good range of flavours. We had their Kani Cream and Oolong Donut.

Milk Doughnuts

The doughnuts were savoury and savoury. A bit crispy with crumbs on the outside with soft and chewy interior. It was served hot which makes the experience better. Kani Cream was made up of Blue Swimmer Crab, Kani Stick, Sweet Corn and Cream Bechamel while the Oolong Donut cream was fragrant and light, just like the tea itself.

Kani Cream & Oolong Donut - $6.50 Each

We had Matcha Latte and Black Coffee with the Milk Donuts.

Matcha Latte & Black Coffee - $7 & $5

Honeycomb Latte was delightful. The latte was good, topped with pieces of honeycomb. It has a good balance of coffee aroma and acidity.

Hojicha Latte & Honeycomb Latte- $7 & $7.50 (Cold)

We had their outlet exclusive Salted Egg Tater Tots. It was also a new item on their menu.

Salted Egg Tater Tots - $12

These Crispy Fried Tater Tots or Mini Hash Browns were drizzled with their Homemade Salted Egg Yolk Sauce and topped with Cereals and curry leaves.

Tater Tots Aka Hash Brown

All their Sandos are freshly breaded, and prepared and contain Mayonnaise.  Whisky BBQ Katsu Sando is also their outlet-exclusive item. The Sando is stomach-filling. This Freshly Breaded Chicken Katsu was large, spread with Suntory Whiskey BBQ Sauce, Melted Cheddar, and Apple Slaw sandwiched by Japanese Milk Bread.

Whisky BBQ Katsu Sando - $18

When I saw the menu, I can took my eyes away from the word "Wagyu" and had ordered this Sando. Their Wagyu Hamburg Beef Patty was homemade and made up of minced meat. It came with caramelised sweet onion Jam, American Cheddar and Japanese Milk Bread.

Wagyu Hamburg Gyu Sando - $28

I prefer the Wagyu Hamburg Gyu Sando compared to the Whisky BBQ Katsu Sando. Do take note the visiting time as some items on the menu are only available after a certain time.

Tokyo Soba

Tokyo Soba is an eatery that originated in the capital of Japan and is known for serving fresh soba.

Tokyo Soba

The eatery is small and may have limited seating, especially during the lunch hours rush for it is located in CBD area.

Interior

Near to the kitchen

We ordered the Seasonal Menu item and it was something new to me with bittermelon and corn kakiage decked up by a bottom layer of pork.

Pork, Bittermelon & Corn Kakiage Soba - $16.50

Initially, I did not read in detail about the mixture of the kakiage till I tasted something bitter I took a look into the ingredients. It was my first time to have bittermelon from a Japanese Cuisine.

Have you tried this before?

The buckwheat noodles are of consistent texture with quality. The soup has an umami taste from ingredients like kelp (kombu) and simmering bonito flakes. The combination of soup and noodles was already good enough for me without additional sides. On a side note, there are no MSG involved in their food.

Soba

The braised Nishin with Japanese sweet sauce tasted somewhat familiar to sardine to me. Anyway, the classification of fish belongs to the same type. We added the dish with sides like  Watercrest Tempura (Kureson Ten) at $3 and Prawn Tempura (Ebi-Ten) at $6. To my surprise, Watercrest tasted so different and did not have the usual strong taste that I had expected. Prawn Tempura on the other hand was pretty ordinary. Their prawn size may vary due to season. Sometimes they do serve 3 pcs for smaller prawn size instead of 2 big pieces.

Herring Soba (Nishin Soba) - $16

We ordered the Bamboo Shoots as a side and it was topped with roasted sesame.

Bamboo Shoots (Menma) - $1.50

This is the known Best Seller in Tokyo. The meal was upgraded to large-size noodles at an additional $2 and a half-boiled egg at $1.

Mix Vegetables Tempura Soba (Kakiage Soba) - $13.50 + $2 + 1

The vegetables were tasty and to my liking as it was not oily.

Mix Vegetables Tempura (Kakiage) - $3

Next up, we also ordered the Sand Borer fish meat set.

Sand Borer Fish Tempura Soba (Kisu Ten Soba) - $15.50

The Sand Borer fish meat tasted fine and the light tempura batter gave additional crispiness to the textural bite.

Sand Borer Fish Tempura

With all-natural ingredients make up this original Japanese Traditional Nooodle "Soba" From Tokyo. Its light to slurp them down.

Soba

Between the hot and cold versions of soba, my preference will be the warm broth as I felt its more stomach-comforting and flavourful. For those who prefer to have rice, they do have some menu items with rice too.

Unatoto Guoco Tower

A place where Unagi lovers need to check out in Guoco Tower. Unatoto is a popular Unagi Don chain in Japan. Adding to the existing popular Unagi Don competitors like Unagi Tei (previously known as Man Man) & Unagiya Ichinoji in the market but at an advantage to consumers like us as we have more choices for Unagi dining.

Unatoto Japanese Unagi Restaurant

This flagship of Unatoto is located in Guoco Tower, strategically next to Tanjong Pagar MRT station with hundreds of outlets across Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Menu

Yes! Just recently, they are opened on Saturdays as well as Sundays. We were relatively early on a weekend morning and were the first few customers. The interior was decorated with Japanese concepts, hanging Japanese Posters and portraits on the wall while the furnishings were mainly wooden in theme.

Having starting off our meal with a warm portion of Chawanmushi with mushrooms and meat. The taste was decent and nothing much special in taste. If you prefer Unagi in Chawanmushi, they have that on their menu too.

Chawanmushi 茶碗蒸し
Chawanmushi 茶碗蒸し- $5

We ordered the Umaki which comes with a choice of half or full. It is savoury tamagoyaki encased with unagi in the middle. Besides that, the Umaki was "stamped" on its surface.

Umaki うまきい - $5.50

Unagi in Umaki

While I prefer more options to savour down my bowl of Unagi Rice, I went ahead ordering Hitsumabishi. The wholesome unagi is grilled and chopped into pieces then spread on the rice and topped with cut seaweed. If you prefer to pair them with broth, scoop some rice and unagi and put them in a separate bowl and pour the broth in it.

Hitsumabushi ひつまぶし
Hitsumabushi ひつまぶし- $13.50

The value for money Unagi grilled over the charcoal. The double portion looks good with Unatoto's special Unagi Tare sauce complimenting the Unagi decking up by a bed of Japanese White Rice. The Unagi was well coated in its sauce and the first bite of it had me given them a thumbs up! Soft & tender with a good smokiness from the charcoal.

Unadon Double うなどんダブル
Unadon Double うなどんダブル - $14.50

Yummy Unagi

Compared to Unagi Tei aka Man Man, we get to see the processes where the Eels were alive, BBQ, then served on our plates. However in Unatoto, we can only see through the glass with staff on duty doing the grilling over charcoal fire. Nonetheless, if you are carving for Unagi Don, do keep in mind to try out Unatoto.
