Jeonpo Meat Shop 전포식육

Earlier this year, Jeonpo Meat Shop (전포식육) opened its first Singapore outlet, adding a nostalgic touch to the city’s ever-growing Korean BBQ scene.

Jeonpo Meat Shop

Tucked right beside the bustling Amoy Street Food Centre at the junction of McCallum Street, this Hong Kong import from the Gold Moon Group recreates the vibe of an old-school Korean diner, think retro signage, metal tables and a smoky, convivial atmosphere while serving up generous cuts of premium meat, classic banchan and hearty Korean favourites.

Furnishings

Even the chairs come with built-in storage so diners can tuck their bags safely away from the BBQ smoke while they dig into generous cuts of premium meat, classic banchan and hearty Korean favourites.

Dining Area

As with any authentic Korean BBQ experience, the meal kicked off with banchan. Ours arrived neatly arranged in smaller bowls on a large tray, a colourful spread that included crunchy broccoli, house-made kimchi, creamy apple salad, pickled turnip, bean sprouts and marinated onions. The variety set a bright, refreshing tone for the heavier meats to follow and made the table look instantly inviting.

Ban

To wash it all down, I paired the meal with a nostalgic Korean orange drink from Lotte – Sac Sac Orange. Sweet, lightly tangy and dotted with chewy coconut jelly bits, it added a playful, refreshing contrast to the smoky meats and savoury banchan.

A king-sized cut of beef short rib, glistening in its marinade, served alongside fresh spring onions, onion slices and thin-cut potatoes, all ready to hit the grill for a hearty, flavour-packed feast!

Take a look at these beautifully presented cuts, on the left, the flower-cut pork belly with its rich marbling, and on the right, the pork collar showcasing vibrant streaks of lean meat and fat. Both cuts promise a juicy, flavourful bite once they hit the grill!

As the BBQ fires up, the excitement begins, juicy cuts of meat sizzling away, setting the stage for a mouth-watering feast!

Starts BBQ-ing

Time to make a ssam! Wrapping tender, juicy slices of meat with crisp vegetables, a bit of banchan and a dollop of gochujang, the perfect bite!

Cold Naengmyeon served in a chilled broth instantly brought back memories of my South Korea trip this year.

The long buckwheat noodles were cut into shorter lengths for easier slurping, and topped with shredded egg, cucumber, and a touch of kimchi. Overall, a refreshing and tasty dish!

Refreshingly good

The Volcano Steamed Egg definitely has a wow factor! Served piping hot with gooey cheese, tangy tomato toppings, spring onions, and roasted sesame. The cheese pull effect is irresistible, and the flavor truly laudable.

The King Cut Beef Short Ribs were grilled to perfection alongside a thick slice of onion, then expertly cut into uniform pieces for a second round on the grill.

The beautifully charred exterior locks in all the juices, intensifying the natural flavor of the short ribs.

Uniform pieces & Rearrangement

Each bite reveals a smoky aroma and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness that’s simply praiseworthy.

Yummy!

Once the raw meat was cleared from the platter, the server skillfully trimmed the remaining rib fat and tossed it with fried rice, seaweed, butter and cheese, turning leftovers into a rich, flavorful treat.

Fried Rice

Towards the end of cooking, the server flattened the fried rice to match the round shape of the pan, then added a playful smiley face with mayonnaise, a cute and fun finishing touch!

Fried Rice with a Smile

Overall, Jeonpo Meat Shop delivers a satisfying and memorable Korean BBQ experience, blending quality meats, flavorful banchan, and thoughtful service in a comfortable and smoke-conscious setting, making it a must-visit for both casual diners and BBQ enthusiasts alike.

The House Chungdam | Korean Restaurant & BBQ

Tucked away along the bustling stretch of Duxton Road, House of Chungdam caught me by surprise  and not just for its food.

The House of Chungdam

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by its minimalist interior design.

Interior

With its clean lines, muted tones, and modern aesthetic, the space felt more like a trendy café than a traditional Korean BBQ restaurant.

Dining Area

It was a refreshing change that set the stage for a dining experience that blended style with substance.

On the Table

Once seated, we were promptly served a selection of condiments, sea salt, fresh garlic, wasabi, and more, the essential companions to elevate the BBQ experience.

Condiments

Alongside these were the usual greens: crisp lettuce, perilla leaves, and sliced green chillies, perfect for wrapping up the grilled meats later on.

Vegetables for Wraps

Of course, no Korean meal is complete without banchan, and House of Chungdam didn’t hold back. A vibrant assortment of side dishes filled the table, each small plate adding colour, texture, and variety to the setting, making the table feel both inviting and satisfyingly full.

Banchan

One standout dish for me was the cheese potato jeon,  a delightful surprise, as it was my first time encountering this at a Korean eatery. It reminded me of a stack of perfectly cooked rosti, topped with crispy bits of bacon and generously showered with grated cheese. The combination of textures, crispy on the outside, soft and cheesy within, made it incredibly satisfying, and a dish I will definitely come back for.

The steamed egg, at first glance, looked a tad dry, not quite the fluffy, cloud-like version I have come to expect. But as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover. One spoonful in, and it was clear that looks were deceiving. It was soft, wobbly, and packed with comforting, savoury flavour, a simple dish done right.

Soy Bean Jigae & Steamed Egg

For the main event, we went with the House Feast, a set menu designed for two, priced at $129. It came with a well-balanced selection of premium cuts: boneless short rib, marinated boneless short rib, and thinly sliced brisket.

Meat

Each cut was beautifully presented and grilled to perfection right at our table, allowing us to savour the rich, juicy flavours and tender textures.

And then came the pork belly, three thick, generous slabs that immediately stole our attention. They looked absolutely glorious, with just the right balance of meat and fat. We could hardly wait to get them sizzling on the grill.

As they cooked, the aroma was irresistible, and the end result did not disappoint: crispy on the edges, juicy in the center, and packed with rich, smoky flavour. A definite highlight of the meal.

Pork Belly on the Grill

The marinated short rib, in particular, stood out with its sweet-savory glaze that caramelized slightly on the grill, adding extra depth to every bite.

So Yummy

To round off the meal, we tried the Jinju Cold Buckwheat Noodles, a refreshing and delicious finish, especially after all the rich grilled meats.

Jinju Cold Buckwheat Noodles - $19

Served chilled with a light, tangy broth and chewy noodles, it was the perfect palate cleanser that left us feeling satisfied but not overly heavy.

Chewy Noodles

Ever since returning from Busan, South Korea, I’ve been a little addicted to Dwaeji Gukbap, the humble yet deeply comforting pork bone soup. It’s a dish that embodies simplicity: a clear, savoury broth and tender slices of pork, perfect for colder days or when you're craving something hearty.

Dwaeji Gukbap

At House of Chungdam, their version stays true to the spirit of the dish, with a slight twist, the rice comes already soaked in the broth, making it even more comforting and convenient to eat. Every spoonful brought back memories of Busan food, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it was done here.

Delicious

We ended our meal on a sweet note with a bowl of Bingsu. I appreciated that it was a single-serving portion rather than the usual oversized mountain of shaved ice. Light, refreshing, and not overly sweet, it was just the right amount to cleanse the palate and finish off the feast without feeling too heavy. A thoughtful end to a well-curated dining experience.

Ssak3 Bras Brasah

Never knew Bras Basah Complex housed hidden gems for dining until we came across Ssak3 Korean BBQ, located just above Jack’s Place.

Run by a Korean chef with over 30 years of culinary experience, this spacious restaurant seats more than 120 guests, making it ideal not just for casual dining, but also for events, parties, and corporate gatherings.

We opted for the Happy Family Set, perfect for 5–6 pax. It’s a great-value feast designed for families and groups, featuring generous portions and a wide variety of authentic Korean BBQ.

Menu Book

The set includes seven kinds of meat, along with comforting sides like Japchae, Steamed Egg, and Army Stew. To round off the meal, diners also get to choose a pancake, either the classic Seafood Spring Onion Pancake or the flavourful Kimchi Pancake.

Menu of Happy Family Set

Starting off, we were greeted with the generous spread of Korean banchan. True to tradition, the variety of small side dishes added both color and flavor to the table. We began nibbling on them while waiting for our Happy Family Set to be prepared, easing into the meal with a taste of authentic Korean culture.

Banchan

The meat platter was a feast on its own, featuring 150g portions of Beef Skirt, Beef Shortplate, Marinated Beef Short Rib and Pork Jowl, alongside 200g servings of Pork Belly, Marinated Pork Collar, and Marinated Chicken.

Meat

A well-balanced mix of cuts, marinated and fresh, perfect for grilling and sharing.

Yummy

Having Korean BBQ here truly made us feel like royalty. The staff skillfully barbecued the different cuts of meat for us, leaving us free to simply relax and chat. The meat was grilled over parchment paper, with excess oil flowing neatly through the gaps of the metal plate into a collection bowl, keeping everything less greasy yet flavourful.

BBQ Plate

The Japchae was absolutely delicious, springy glass noodles stir-fried with mushrooms, carrots, onions, and zucchini, all coated in a savoury-sweet sauce. The sprinkle of sesame seeds added a nutty aroma that made each bite even more enjoyable. Simple yet comforting, it’s a classic Korean side that never disappoints.

Japchae

We also had their steamed egg, soft and fluffy with a comforting warmth, the perfect side dish to complete the meal.

Steamed Egg

Their Army Stew, also known as Budae Jjigae, was hearty and appetizing with its rich, savory broth. I must admit, I’m definitely a sucker for this dish!

Army Stew

We had the Seafood Spring Onion Pancake, which was nicely done, crispy on the edges, soft inside, and served in a big plate just as expected.

For drinks, Ssak3 has a unique system, instead of ordering from the servers, diners can walk up to the vending machine near the entrance to make their purchase.

Overall, I find the environment pleasant, and best of all, CDC vouchers can be used here!
