Famous Palace

What a nice landscape looking out of the glass panels of the restaurant. Just right in time, we were there at the blue hours overlooking the golf course.

Kicking off our dining experience with Sichuan Hot & Sour Crab Meat Soup sets a bold and exciting tone for the meal. As the first dish arrives at the table, the aromatic steam rising from the bowl instantly captures our senses, hinting at the complex layers of flavour that await.

The soup's rich, amber broth shimmers with a slightly thickened consistency and the first spoonful offers an immediate burst of flavours— the tangy vinegar and the numbing spice of Sichuan peppercorns dance on your palate, awakening your taste buds with a thrilling mix of heat and sourness.

A simple yet elegant dish that highlights the natural sweetness and delicate flavour of fresh prawns. These prawns were served whole, with the shells on, to retain moisture and flavour. We appreciated the dish for its freshness and simplicity with presentation straightforward, allowing their natural beauty to shine like this.

Poached Live Prawn 白灼活虾

As the Curry Fish Head in Claypot landed on the table, it immediately became the centerpiece of the meal with portable a gas stove giving it heat, with the dish bubbling, exuding a rich and aromatic scent that fills the air with tantalizing spices.

As we sink the ladle and scoop lifted the fish, the sight of the fish head gave us a tender and perfectly cooked presentation. It was surrounded by a medley of vibrant vegetables like okra, & eggplant, all soaking in the thick, fragrant curry. The presentation is rustic yet inviting, with the claypot adding a homely, comforting feel to the experience.

The sea bass, perfectly steamed, lies atop a bed of preserved vegetables that have been meticulously prepared to balance their intense, slightly tangy flavour with the mild, delicate taste of the fish. The fish's flesh is tender and moist, practically falling apart with the touch of your chopsticks.

The Wasabi De-Shell Prawn is a visually striking and flavorful dish that combines the natural sweetness of prawns with the bold, spicy kick of wasabi. The prawns are skillfully de-shelled and shaped into bite-sized, round prawn balls, offering a refined and elegant presentation. Each prawn ball is generously coated with a vibrant, bright green wasabi sauce, which immediately catches the eye with its bold colour. The sauce is creamy and piquant, delivering a sharp heat that quickly subsides, leaving a pleasant tingling sensation on the palate. The wasabi's intensity is balanced by a hint of sweetness and creaminess in the sauce, which complements the delicate, tender texture of the prawns.

Teochew Soya Sauce Brined Duck is a classic dish from the Teochew culinary tradition, celebrated for its rich, savoury flavours and meticulous preparation.  takes on a beautiful, deep brown colour, with the soy sauce infusing the skin and meat with a glossy sheen. This dish embodies the essence of Teochew cuisine. The dish was comforting and homey, lending both tradition and the deep satisfying flavours of Teochew Cooking.

Bold flavoured and textured, with the deep, fermented notes of the sauce complementing the indulgence of the crispy pork belly.  It offered a satisfying crunch, a burst of umami, and a lingering, savoury richness that kept me coming back for more.

The Traditional Stewed Pork Belly is a comforting and flavorful dish, enhanced by the addition of colourful capsicums. These pork bellies were slowly braised until tender in a rich & savoury sauce. This makes it a hearty and comforting dish.

Yang Chow Fried Rice is known for its vibrant flavors and satisfying texture. We enjoyed the well-balanced taste, combining sweet, savoury, and umami elements, with each bite offering a satisfying mix of textures and flavours.

Despite the simplicity of Braised E-Fu Noodle, we enjoyed its deep, savoury flavours and satisfying texture.

With the combination of Salted EggYolk and Italian sauce, it creates an intriguing fusion of flavours that combines the umami and richness of salted egg yolks with the tangy, herbaceous notes of Italian cuisine. What a delightful fusion on the slab of crispy Chicken Chop

A delightful dish that combines the satisfying crunch of fried prawns with the distinctive flavour of seaweed. The crispy exterior and the unique seaweed flavor create a delicious and satisfying eating experience to the springy prawns.

Di Wei Teochew Restaurant

Di Wei Teochew Restaurant is one of the F&B located in Seletar Aerospace housed in a former Colonial British Bungalow. Di Wei specializes in Teochew Cuisine and apparently has been quite reputable for their authenticity in Teochew Cuisine via words of mouth.

Di Wei Teochew Restaurant

As the trip to Di Wei Teochew Restaurant was an impromptu decision, there was no reservation made and their indoor seatings were full. Therefore we were told to take the outdoor seating.

Outdoor Seating

While I'm expecting to sink myself in some Authentic Teochew Food and environment, our orders were taken by a waitress that spoke to us in Mandarin with a Cantonese accent then followed by the Cantonese dialect. That instantly threw my mood away and made me set a lower expectation in a Teochew restaurant.

The outdoor seating that we were at was spacious and airy. Since we are only the customers sitting outside, it made us feel privileged, just like we have booked the entire outdoor area.

There are a few variations of Yam Ring, Sweet & Sour Pork, Chicken, Large Prawn or Pork Ribs.
We took the recommended selection from the menu. The pork ribs were evenly coated with sweet sauce and were tender to chew on together with the crispy Yam ring. This dish was delectable.

Pork Rib Yam Ring 排骨芋卷- $25

We started off with their Signature Teochew Liver Roll. The presentation of the roll looks similar to Ngoh Hiong with its crispy fried beancurd skin wrapping up the fillings.

Teochew Liver Roll 潮州式干花 - $12 Per Roll

It is to pair with the sweet sauce given. Though it is good, I'm still not used to the gamey taste of the liver.

A portion of the Teochew Liver Roll

Well executed with some tasty gravy, not salty and can be eaten alone without pairing with white rice. The plate consists of carrots, broccoli, mushroom and scallops.

Stir-Fried Broccoli & Scallops 带子炒西兰花 - $18

One of us was excited to try out the Teochew Braised Shark's Fin and we ordered a personal portion for sharing.

Teochew Braised Shark's Fin 潮州小鲍翅 - $28 (Per Pax)

For the portion, the ingredients were generous and taste was delighting.

No doubt that the Grouper Fish Porridge is the restaurant's recommendation, the regulars will prefer to order their Pomfret Fish Porridge instead. Though we are just an hour into their business operations for the day, their Pomfret Fish Porridge was already sold out.

Grouper Fish Porridge 石斑鱼粥 - $25

The Teochew Style Porridge had left a big impression on me as their porridge was not the usual ones we often had from the porridge stall. Traditionally, this ethnic style of preparation is having rice in soup. Even as a Teochew, I seldom had such Porridge.

Fish Soup was excellently done. I love the light and fragrant taste of such porridge with ingredients none other than slices of grouper fish, seaweed, coriander, preserved mustard and ginger strips.

My Serving

The Teochew Oyster Omelette is fluffy and topped with a handful of Oysters. It was also good to pair with the sweet and sour chilli given.

Teochew Oyster Omelette 潮州蚝煎蛋 - $12

Washing the food down with a glass of Water Chestnut and we decided to head towards Hangar66 for some desserts.

Water Chestnut - $2.80

The Standard of food is good, however, there were only these dishes that we ordered. I'm still looking forward to dining in the next round and enjoying their Pomfret Fish Porridge which was sold out. Not only that, I will like to try out more on their traditional Teochew dishes that is quite rare in the in market.

Hangar66

Published on 09 December 2021

The Aviation Theme Cafe is hidden within a plane hangar. It has an interesting view of parked airplanes and runway. The cafe is tuck away in Seletar Aerospace and if you are an aviation enthusiast, it gives you every reason to be here.

Entrance of Hangar66

The spacious eatery is welcoming with aviation decoration. Planes parts were used for example as the communal table and if you sit close to the windows at the main dining area, you will get a view of the working hanger area with planes.

Helicopter Anchored at the Dining Area

Just too bad, we missed the timing to order the main courses, thus we were only there for bar bites and drinks.

Ice Chocolate & Long Black - $7.66 & $3.66

Luckily a consolation for us, the promotion on one for one Sapporo beer.

1-for-1 Sapporo - $14.66

The Onion Rings are so much better than the ones we had over at the other cafe in Seletar Aerospace. Quality stuff with real onions under the golden brown batter and what makes it best is that I have them paired with my favourite Nachos Cheese.

Fried Onion Rings - $7.66

Since it was raining during our visit, a warm bowl of soup really makes us feel better. Lobster Bisque is good and dipping the toasted garlic bread into the creamy warm bowl of crustaceans flavour soup was definitely a stomach warmer on a cold and rainy day.

Lobster Bisque - $7.66

Comparing this to the former soup, my personal preference will be the Lobster Bisque as that is more flavourful. However, this mushroom soups comes with mushroom chunks and goes well with garlic toast.

Mushroom Soup - $5.66

Fries are pretty standard with Truffle flavours and topped with cheese powder.

Truffle Fries - $8.66

Meat floss camouflaging the soft shell crab.

Soft Shell Crab - $9.66

Their signature Hangar66 chicken wings are laudable. Crispy skin and well marinated.

Hangar 66 Chicken Wings - $8.66

Comparing this cafe to the one that we have been to recently, Hangar66 variety of bar snacks and tastes way better. Food pricing is reasonable too. As much as I realised, the price of the food ends with X.66 which signifies Hangar66.

We will be back to enjoy the main courses, avoiding the bar bites hours (1430hrs - 1800hrs) as bar hours offers only bar bites, soup, salad, drinks and desserts.

2nd Visit in December 2021

We took effort and actually went back to Hangar66 for their main courses. It was not surprising that the place was packed at peak hours like this.

3 Sapporo Pints
3 Sapporo Pints - $23.66

We bought 3pints of Sapporo and was given a free sample size of their Signature Sichuan Mala Clams. Honestly, these clams complimented the beer and even though it was stated as Sichuan Mala, the spicy level are still bearable.

We ordered another bite that we did not manage to order during our first visit. The Zulu Prawn Twister is unique and resembles the wich's fingers. Not a bad choice if you want something light for bar bites.

Zulu Prawn Twister - $10.66

The mains come with 2 choices of sides to choose from,  Mixed Salad, French Fries, Sauteed Mushroom or Onion Rings. However, for Fish & Chips, they already come with fries therefore, we can only have 1 more choice of side to choose.

Fish & Chips - $14.66

It won't go wrong with the choice of sauteed mushroom as the side. The mushroom was plump and juicy, I wished we can have more.

Mushrooms

Our downwind Beef Burger main was accompanied by mixed salad as well as fried onion rings. Presentation looks good with the choices of sides and black plate as base.

Downwind Beef Burger - $18.66

The beef patty was thick and succulent. Yummy.

For the sides, you may want to skip the mixed salad and go for the mushrooms instead.

Having been here twice, I find that the place is worth the price paid and reasonable.
