Sim Lim Square Bak Chor Mee

If you are a fan of Sim Lim Square's Food Court Bak Chor Mee (formerly known as "Fishball Minced Meat Noodle") which closed in December 2022, you might have heard of its comeback in Redhill recently through social media.

Sim Lim Square Bak Chor Mee

The stall in Sim Lim Square was started by the owners' grandparents, dishing out bowls of delicious BCM aka Bak Chor Mee and I must admit, I'm their supporter and will grab a bowl of it without fail whenever I enter their food court.

Corner Stall

Items on the menu include Signature Bak Chor Mee, Mini Pot Noodles, Dumpling Noodles, Handmade Fish Ball Noodles, Fried Dumpling Noodles.

We ordered their Signature Bak Chor Mee. It has a generous serving of ingredients like house-made dumplings, fishballs, meatballs, fishcakes, braised mushrooms, minced meat and Ngoh Hiong.

Signature Bak Chor Mee - $5 (Mee Pok)

Signature Bak Chor Mee - $5 (Yellow Noodle)

Their House Made Dumplings have always been my favourite and I always ordered them separately in a bowl of soup. The dumpling still gave me a familiar nostalgic taste but I would prefer something plump.

Dumplings

The Fried Dumpling was crispy and packed with meat and not too greasy.

Fried Dumpling

We tossed the noodles with the sauce and ingredients, the noodles were not as vinegary as I had expected and tasted nothing out of the ordinary.

The taste of the soup was bland too.

Ngoh Hiong

What a far cry! I felt disappointed after making a trip down but realised the taste was not the same anymore.

While on their facebook page, they mentioned that they will be closed for now until further notice.

Wow Wow West

Whenever we talk about ABC Brickworks Food Center, Wow Wow West will always be in the list of "To Eat". Ever since my job had relocated, the chances of visiting this Food Center gets slimmer. Nonetheless, as times passed by, we still remember Wow Wow West with its Western Food.

I always think that this stall has a good teamwork and system to handle the incoming crowd during the peak hours from taking orders and preparation of food.

Stall of Wow Wow West

Each plate of servings comes with thick-cut fries, a generous portion of coleslaw and Baked Beans.

The pork chop was juicy and flavourful, covered with black pepper sauce. It had some crispy charred edges and no doubt its pork, the meat was quite tender.

Pork Chop - $8

The Chicken Chop portion was generous for the price paid. It was well-marinated and ladled with an abundance of black pepper sauce over it. The crispy charred edges were delighting and addictive.

Chicken Chop - $8

While underneath the crispy skin, we get to have some succulent slab of chicken chop that tasted so inviting.

Wow Wow West is my all time favourite western food stall during lunch in one of those days while I'm working in Bukit Merah Area. They were known for its value for money serving of western food which will just beat its competitor in ABC Brickworks Food Centre hands down.

Wild Wild West Stall

During lunch hours, the plates and plates of attention-catching western food that comes with enormous portion is a scene stealer in the hawker, especially when the aroma hits you when the helpers serve were serving to the designated tables.

The chicken was well-marinated with Western herbs and coated with black pepper and brown sauce.  Do not be deceived by the picture below, there is actually another slab of chicken under the top piece of chicken chop. Besides having a big filling piece of chicken, what i like best is its coleslaw. The milky fragrant and crunchy bite is soothing to the throat.

While the baked beans were more towards the ordinary taste, we had noticed its fries was of better grade when we packed the food home. As I was staying about an hour journey away from Bukit Merah, their fries did not turn out to be soggy when I reach home which I thought is good.

Chicken Chop - $6

The sausages were another starring items on its menu besides their Chicken Chop, Chicken Cutlet and Fish and chips. The glossy-looking sausage which is about 20cm in length was meaty and burst of cheese once you sink your teeth into it.

Cheesy Pork Sausage - $3

There were 2 Wow Wow West in Bukit Merah Area, one is located in 85 Redhill market while the other is in Brickworks.

All in all, I will recommend this place for western food lovers for its pocket-friendly and value-for-money portion.

Fong Sheng Fried Kway Teow

By longing at the queue and hearing the constant "clinging clanging" sound from the hit of the wok with the Chinese turner from the stall of Fong Sheng Fried Kway Teow has been a typical scene during the peak hours. Despite a tough competition between the 2 popular Fried Kway Teow Stalls in the Food Center, both of them do have their school of fans.

Stall of Fong Sheng Fried Kway Teow

Every bite was burst full of flavours from the Wok Hei taste, a mixture of blood cockles, Chinese sausages, fishcakes, beansprouts and eggs.

Fried Kway Teow (Big) - $4.50

The taste was definitely satisfying and manned by a friendly senior couple. If you love the ingredients of blood cockles and Chinese sausage, you can't miss this out!

Ingredients

Comparing its competitor's stall Day Night Fried Kway Teow 日夜炒粿条, I would say that both of them has their own unique attraction. While Fong Sheng uses a broader type of Kway Teow and was generous with its ingredients like Chinese sausage and blood cockles, Day Night Fried Kway Teow put them in sparingly but if you are someone who prefers a savoury taste to more ingredients, you might want to head to another stall.

What do you like? A broader Kway Teow or Kway Teow Kia for your CKT?

Abundance (Redhill)

I'm finally back to Abundance after a year plus! Its good to see that they have been doing well with additional outlets in Jalan Besar. Surprisingly they are still packed with customers on a Weekday evening. I'm glad to see there are new items on the menu! We ordered their Fizzy Drinks to pair with our meal.

Fizzy Iced Lemon Tea 柠檬茶 & Fizzy Lychee Oolong Tea 荔枝乌龙茶 - $4.90 each

I'm glad that there was no price hike for this Gua Bao and still tasted as good. The luscious and well-braised pork belly topped with hand-roasted peanuts, house pickles and coriander still made up this signature Bun Dish.

Gua Bao 刈包 - $7.90

If you love the Salted Egg savoury sauce, you will be attracted to this. The prawn patty texture were springy and bouncy coupled with delicious and rich Salted egg sauce together with crispy egg floss. not forgetting the soft bun that cradled the ingredients.

Salted Egg Prawn Bun 咸蛋虾包 - $13.90

On their recommendation list! The braised beef shank was flavourful and paired with sesame egg, house pickles and topped with crispy garlic that enhanced the fragrance of the dish. On a side note, the vegetables of the house pickles can be better if they prepared it in smaller piece.

Braised Beef Bowl 牛腱卤肉饭 - $16.90

The San Bei aka 3 Cups Oyster Mushrooms was to die for. It was an additive side dish to me as I could not resist myself and kept popping them into my mouth. The dish had a well-blended taste of basil, rice wine and sesame oil.

San Bei Mushrooms 三杯杏鲍菇 - $13.90

With the seating limitation, our empty plates and bowls were quickly taken away by the servers. It was good that they are efficient but on the contrary, such efficiency kind of gives us a feel that we have to dine within a period.

Just 5 minutes walk away from Redhill MRT station, you will get to this Adundance Taiwanese Style Cafe that is located under the HDB flats.

ABunDance

Though there is both outdoor and indoor seating, the space is still of a limited capacity.

Abundance

The music in Abundance foster a relaxed and chilling environment. Furthermore, they have Craft Beers on tap as well as having them in the fridge. It would not be a bad choice if you want to have some beer over some Taiwanese Food.

Drinks?

The Fizzy Iced Lemon Tea comes with a taste of Iced Lemon Tea mixed with soda was refreshing. It was served in a small glass cup with ice cubes. I find that the amount was too little for me and I might need 3 cups for meal.

Fizzy Iced Lemon Tea - $3.90

Under the beverage menu, there are only 5 non-alocholic choices and only the Fizzy Iced Lemon Tea and Apple Sidra are something that we would not find off the shelves usually.

Apple Sidra 苹果西打  - $3.90

"Golden Egg" on the menu looked interesting. It was actually fried century egg wrapped in spring roll skin topped with bonito flakes and drizzled with sweet and spicy sauce.

Golden Egg  - $6

The preparation may be of something different but the taste as a whole was rather ordinary.

Century Egg in Spring Roll Skin

If you were to ask me, I find nothing exciting in its taste. The taste is rather distinctive in the individual ingredients used. I would say its just some crispy roll over century egg, bonito flakes and chilli sauce taste.

Fried Century Egg

The Gua Bao, a popular street food in Taiwan is also the first item on their menu. I guess most of us are here for this! This distinctive Asian Burger was sandwiched by a savoury brasied pork belly, generously spreaded with sweet peanuts, pickles and decorated with the Chinese parsely.

Gua Bao 刈包 - $7.90

The chef used to make their buns in house but due to manpower issues, they have to resort in using factory made ones to meet the demand.

Side View of the Gua Bao

The thick pork belly was melty yet not over greasy. Totally flavourful and strike a good balance of fat and meat.

It may be messy but definitely worth it

Braised Beef Noodles was awesome. The thin noodles were fresh and served in a bundle without sticking together with braised beef golden coin. The broth may looked spicy and oily but it holds a good buttery scent that I like.

Beef Noodles 红烧牛肉面 - $16.90

The texture of the noodles was smooth and the braised beef was tender and disintegrate easily.

Tender Beef

The bowl of fried rice is the most expensive item on the menu. The fried rice was cooked with beef fat and topped with slices of short rib. There is a strong whiff of truffle fragrance from this dish which kept my stomach growling. Mixed the Sou Vides egg into the fried rice together with the Tobiko to enjoy a different texture.

Niu Yolk 牛小排 - $19

100g of beef short ribs were included. Price is steep but its okay to indulge once a while. We topped up the dish with Tobiko at $2. The portion may be a little small if you are sharing. I absolutely love how this dish is executed especially with the runny onsen egg that gave a golden goodness and creamier taste!

Topped up Tobiko - $2

All in all, I find that the food is not too bad and I don't mind revisiting Abundance again.

Yuguo Curry Rice

The queue of the Curry Rice had always made me wonder whenever I passed by their stall. At a closer look into the stall, there were a variety of dishes available and service was considerably efficient. The aunty at this ABC Brickworks branch was friendly.

Yuguo Curry Rice

When I wanted to ask for sharing dishes, I was told they are only selling individual portions. I opted for a curry with potatoes, tomato egg and a big minced meatball. Curry was not too spicy and the portion was more than what I had expected. Another good thing is that you can self-help with the free egg-drop soup available at the counter.

My Order

The staple ingredient that none of us should go without will be the Hainanese Pork Cutlet. It was dark brown in colour and decent with its biscuit texture. We had braised cabbages and fried eggs on the plate.

My Order

Overall, I find that Yuguo Curry Rice is pretty decent. Though it is not the typical Hainanese Curry Rice, I will still recommend it to those who love Hainanese Curry Rice with generous portions and at an affordable price of less than $10 for two plates above.

Carrara

Carrara is a hidden gem in the neighbourhood of Jalan Bukit Merah and a stone's throw away from the popular ABC Brickworks Market and Food Centre.

Carrara

Although it was after lunch hours, the cafe was full house indoors (seats are limited) and we had no choice but to take the seats outside.

When the All Day Breakfast Menu includes rosti, you can see the sparkle in my eyes. We had the recommended Sausage cheese swiss rosti. It was a hearty breakfast with Swiss Rosti as the star with mozzarella cheese as well as sour cream, chicken garlic sausage, sunny side up, spring onions and assorted greens adorn with the cherry red tomatoes.

Sausage cheese swiss rosti - $17.90

The Rosti was good and the mozzarella cheese pulling effect, it makes the meal addictive.

Cheese Pull from the Rosti

Big Breakfast offers a stomach-filling meal with scrambled eggs, chicken garlic sausage, turkey bacon, sauteed mushrooms, waffle with maple syrup and assorted greens.

Big Breakfast - $16.90

The meal was completed with a bowl of Mushroom Soup at the bundle pricing. The bowl of mushroom soup was tasty with chunks of mushroom bites and had the right amount of thickness.

Mushroom Soup - $3.90

While they are 1st runner-up winner of the Singapore Gelato Championship in 2019, its hard to leave the cafe without having a taste of their Gelato. We have 2 premium scoops of ice cream, namely Lemongrass Bluepea and Earl Grey Lavender. Both scoops were smooth and addictive. The lemongrass was mild and light tasting while the Earl Grey Lavender flavour was not too overpowering.

Gelato

For such quality of food and gelato, its absolutely worth a comeback!

Lengkok Bahru Fishball Noodles

Used to patronised this old school Fishball Noodles stall when I was working in that area. Almost after a decade, this coffeeshop still maintains its rundown and rustic interior, without any modern renovation like most coffee shops in Singapore. However, its outlook and environment do not deter its patrons from visiting, in fact, the coffee shop is still bustling as ever and finding a seat is still an issue. The humble coffee shop has just 2 stalls, the Fishball Noodles stall and a drink stall that sells traditional steamed bread and beverages.

Fishball Noodles Stall in the Coffeeshop

Looking at the man who manages the stall, it was no longer the uncle that I'm familiar with. Hoping that I still get the old school childhood taste of the noodles, I tasted the bowl of soup first. I was disappointed as the taste was totally different from what I used to have.

The medium portion I had was filled with minced meat, fishcakes, meatball, fish dumpling and fishballs beside Kway Teow noodles.

Noodles - $4 (Medium)

The taste of noodles was no longer the one I have recalled. The chili taste was bland and overall the noodles were rather dry.

Ingredients

For those who have a bigger appetite, you can order the bigger portion of $5, however, the biggest portion may not even satisfy your hunger.

Noodles (Big) - $5

Though it's meant to be traditional in taste, I find that it's rather disappointing waiting for half an hour for a mediocre bowl of noodles. I still prefer the old school fishball noodle taste by the previous owner.
