Guoco Midtown Cheers

We paired the plain white naan with their recommended vegetable curry, Aloo Gobi Shimla Mirchi - an aromatic blend of potato and cauliflower cooked with onion and tomato masala. The naan perfectly soaked up the rich flavours of the curry, making it a delicious combination.

Aloo Gobi Shimla Mir chi & Plain Naan - $16.50 + $3.50

We shared the tandoori platter between us, which came with various flavoursome treats: three kinds of chicken (Murgh Tikka Badami, Chicken Tikka & Kali Mirchi Kebab), succulent fish tikka, prawns, and a mutton sheekh kebab. It was a delicious and satisfying spread, perfect for sharing.

Tandoori Platter - $49

While we savored the Indian dishes, we didn’t forget about the British staple, fish and chips. The crispy, golden-battered fish and perfectly fried chips provided a comforting and familiar contrast to the spiced flavours of the Indian fare.

Fish & Chips - $18

The Warm Lava Chocolate Torte with vanilla ice cream didn't quite meet our expectations, as the molten centre failed to flow when we cut into it. Although the flavour was still rich, the lack of that gooey chocolate lava was a bit disappointing.

Warm Lava Chocoalte Torte - $18

We washed down the meal with a refreshing glass of strawberry lassi and a warm, aromatic pot of masala tea, both traditional Indian beverages that paired beautifully with the rich flavours of the tandoori platter.

Our Meal

Overall, it was a great experience indulging in both British and Indian food while chilling with friends in a relaxed area that wasn’t too bustling for a Friday night. The live bands playing during weekend evenings add even more reason to unwind here, offering the perfect escape without having to navigate through the usual crowds at the malls.

Gayatri Restaurant

Gayatri was highly recommended by my pal who enjoyed Indian Food and during one of the weekends where we were around Serangoon Area, she suggested to show me her favourite Indian Food eating place since young. Out of curiosity, I followed her. I didn't realized that Gayatri is just located by the side of Muthu's Curry Restaurant and good thing about it is that even though the place is crowded, it is less commercialized.

Gayatri Restaurant
We did not make any reservation and was lucky to grab a seat for two. Service was friendly and accommodating.

Chiller
Instead of having plain rice, we ordered Briyani Rice set that comes with 2 vegetables. Empty plates were given to us with chargeable wet tissue.

Empty Plate
Servers will then go around topping up rice and sides (cabbages & gourds). You can let them know the portion to be placed on your plate without wasting.

Vegetables
What's good about ordering like this is that the vegetables are free flow and you are free to request for refill upon finishing them.

2 Briyani Set Meal - $13
We requested for chicken as well as fish curry to pair along with our Briyani Rice.

Gravy for Briyani
Butter chicken was great in its fragrance. The chicken were char-grilled and cooked with garlic, ginger, onion and cashew nut gravy.  Gravy was luscious and yummy, also a good alternative to pair them with the rice.

Butter Chicken - $8.50 (Small)
Comes in two sizes, small or large. They were not too spicy and with excellent texture that give full hints of freshness in their Sotong.

Sotong Masala - $6.50 (Small)
Easing the amount of spice, it will be good to have a cup of Lassi, a popular traditional yoghurt drink. I enjoy the glass of Lassi as they were refreshing and not too sweet.

Mango Lassi - $4.50
With many of my Indian friends mentioning that Gayatri Restaurant is a better choice, I can't agree further. I hope to be back for more food one day.

Pak Kashmiri Delight

It was quite a rare chance to have me dining in Tekka Centre as the place was those that I would not  have thought I would go. It just happened by chance that we were looking for something after meal nearby at Mackanize Road and we decided to explore some of the Indian Food in the Hawker.

As we walked along the row of Muslim stalls, Pak Kashmiri had caught hold of our attention with its spread of delights. Naan and Chapatti are their main specialties.

Pak Kashmiri Delights
Self service is adviced with the dinner crowd around especially. We had the Mutton Marsala to dip our naans. Taste was not what we had expected with the sauce slightly diluted. However the amount of mutton given was still bearable.

Mutton Marsala - $3
Naan was made by per order and we decided to choose 2 kinds to share among ourselves. We had the plain and garlic flavoured. What I like about the naan that it was served in its best at its freshest condition. As we tore them apart and dip them into the Mutton Marsala, we can feel the pain on our fingers due to the heat emitted from the naans.

Plain Naan tasted average while we had higher expectation for the garlic flavoured, however the standards and garlic fell below our expectation. There was no slightest scent of garlic even though minced pieces of garlic was spotted on it.

Plain Naan - $1 (top) & Garlic Naan - $1.50 (Bottom)

Since there were a number of stalls around, if I'm back there again, I would definitely try on other food.

Siraj - Famous Waterloo St Indian Rojak

The location of Siraj is rather prominent as they were located at the corner of Albert Centre Market and Food Centre. I was introduced to Siraj from a friend who told me that Siraj is actually the Famous Indian Rojak from Waterloo Street and he had heard about it from the "Lost and Found" Television Program sometimes back.

Siraj - Famous Waterloo St Indian Rojak
We stopped and grabbed some bite before continuing our meetup session on a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon.  Like the usual Indian Rojak Stalls, the fried flour made items were many and came in attractive colors. There was a crowd over at their stall and patrons were waiting for their turn to pick up the assortment. These selected items were them placed into the deep fryer at high temperature and cut into smaller pieces, ready to be served with cucumbers, onions and green chillis. Gravy was hot but diluted.

Indian Rojak

Kambing Soup tasted quite diluted and was a disappointment. One look at it, I was somehow turned off by the oily layer. However, the meat was tender but still as an overall, the taste was lacking.

Mutton Soup - $5
Overall, I would say that their Indian rojak was more than ordinary and honestly speaking, I have expected something more, perhaps comparable to Habib's Rojak of West Coast or Al mahboob Rojak in Tampines.

Al-Ameen

Many of us had probably heard of Al-Ameen, the famous eating house which is located opposite of beauty world.  Their shop located in Chu Lin Road was not that bad either. Operating around the clock, they served a decent fare of Thai Muslim and Indian Food at an affordable pricing. When hunger pangs in the night, this is a spot where you can rely on!

Coffeeshop interior and crowd

Teh Tarik and all kinds of Gozilla, Dinosaur drinks you name it, they were all available in the Al-Ameen's menu. We ordered the common drinks such as Lychee and Limau ice. These sweet syrups were just part of their sweet drinks.

Lychee Ice ($2.50) & Limau Ice ( $1.50)

Though oily, chicken Marsala was real good. Served warm in a metal bowl, the chicken cubes were tender and skinless coupled by some garnishing.
Chicken Marsala - $7

Delicious cheese naans were placed before our eyes in a basket with dolly paper on its base. Look at the cheesy substances melted on the naan, they were what I'm dying for! Having ordered 2 pieces of them, they were stacked together and was sticked closely to one another when the cheese cooled down. Each piece of cheese naan was cut into quarters.

Cheese Naan - $7 for 2
When the yummies combined! What a perfect pairing. Just spread the marsala chicken on top of the cheese naan and enjoy the gastronomical food experience!

Chicken Marsala & Cheese Naan = Yummy

On a side note, if you are driving there, do watch out for carpark attendants if you were parking the side of the road opposite Al-Ameen. Nevertheless, the helpers were rather alert and would annouce the presence of the carpark attendants.

Cost: $18 for 2 pax

Raffles Marina

Raffles Marina Bistro, a place that filled me with more and more memories. It is located in Raffles Marina Country Club in Tuas West Drive, just a stone throw away from Tuas Checkpoint. They serves a good spread of food, namely Indian, Western, Local and dessert cuisine.

Menu
Enjoy the therapeutic marina view of yatch berthing alongside with wooden plank walks with the sunset. Such view in Singapore is rare, the alfresco dining and fantastic view of the harbour and sea especially.

Towards to right, we got a good view long highways bridging Tuas Check Point (2nd Link) and  Johor Bahru.

2nd Link to JB
Look at these tables, there were prepared for use of buffets. In fact, Raffles Marina is also quite popular with their Indian Buffet offered during lunch time. Well, their Briyani is one of the best I had tried so far. Do also take note that the buffet is not a daily thing.

Signature Mocktail, a great summer blend using the freshest coconut. Its unique flavor makes it refreshing on its own or paired with a great meal. With the backdrop of the sunset, it had made this summer drink perfect for that moment.

Marina Breeze - $7 each
An add-on of $1 to the Grilled Halibut fish allowed us to enjoy a serving of soup of the day and ice cream as the dessert. We was presented with Minestrone soup as soup of the day with a wedge from the baguette spreaded by garlic cream, toasted. The soup was full of ingredients and perfect munch with the crispy toast dipped in.

Soup of the day
If you think that Ikea Chicken Wings are good, I bet that these are definitely better. These golden crispy brown wings were flavourful, intensively marinated with a good taste deep down to its meat. They were served in a basket on dolly paper with a little parsley stalk by the side.

Chicken Wings (3pcs) - $7.50

Fish and Chips lover, this is your take! Price may seems a little bit steep perhaps but the portion had explained its worthiness. 3 Long fillets given with a bed of fries and its salad by the side. Spread the Tartar sauce on the golden fillet to enjoy the delicious spread of the western cuisine.
Fish & Chips $14
Woot! Look at the scrumptious golden brown dish in front of your eyes.

The Grilled Halibut was fresh and was delicately done with vegetables (Carrots, potatoes, cucumbers etc) that was creatively cut. The fish was cooked to softness accompanied by portions of pasta sauce, an appetizing dish of the night.

Grilled Halibut Fish Fillet - $23.50
The classy outlook of a scoop of ice cream over the dolly paper and the ice cold glass. This Almond Pistachio Ice Cream by Movenpick was topped with a slice of strawberry was my perfect ending on my dinner.
Movenpick Almond Pistachio
The skylines were mesmerizing during the blue hours. This is a perfect spot to romance your date and enjoy your meal with sea breeze blowing towards your cheek at intervals.

There was a Surcharge of 15% and tax 7%. The verdict is enjoyable food with waterfront dining at affordable price. Moreover Raffles Marina Bistro is opened to the public and offers the executives from nearby industrial area an hour long lunch escape from the weariness of work. The only letdown was that its service was a little bit lacking.

All in all, I think it's highly recommended place to bring your guests and your date here.

Thosai

Come to meal times, Alif Restaurant is always packed and finding a place to sit is an issue. Visited its prata stall on a sunday morning and the seats were almost taken. We didnt have a table to ourselves but to share with others.

Alif Restaurant

To ensure its quality, Alif has every prata or thosai made freshly on spot which easily catches one attention as we walked pass their shop seeing the master, tossing the prata in the air and hearing the banging noise of the prata's dough on their stainless steel worktops.

The plain thosai was crispy thin served on the classic metal plate with 3 kinds of dips. The refreshing tartness of the thosai had been enjoyed together with the rich and spicy flavourful dips.

Plain Thosai
The masala thosai is a more popular variation, acommpanied by smashed spiced potatoes and different kinds different types of sambar (vegetarian curry). Simply Divine!

Al Mahboob Indian Rojak

So much of recent news and hearsay about Al Mahboob Indian Rojak's reopening, I had finally stepped into their new location and had a real time feel of the place. Ah, at least I'm up to date by now. In case you might have gone back to their original unit, please do not be surprised that the place is actually deserted now with all furnishing torn down. All you have to do is to walk down along the walkways of the S11 building and you will find the big signage of Al Mahboob's.

Al Mahboob Rojak Restaurant Pte Ltd
As you pulled opened the glass door, enjoyed a clean and new environment of Al Mahboob with its new furnishing with many pairs of wavy mirrors on its wall, what's more, they have a wash area for customers to wash their hands before and after meal.

Dining Environment
The place was divided into 3 counters, Rojak Stall, Cooked Food & Beverages Counter.

Stalls

Served by a friendly guy (known to be the brother of Al Mahboob's boss) who was quite chatty at the beverage counter and could handle mandarin as well as Hokkien during our conversations.  Bought 2 cups of Tea Tarik ($1.50 each) and a cup of cold Holicks at $1.20. With all his jokes and laughters, it made time passes easier while waiting for him to prepare the drinks as well as our rojak.

Holicks Ice

Ordering Rojak is faster than before, I confirmed that its 3 to 4 times faster! In the past, I had to wait up to an hour for a plate of rojak and keep returning to its stall to check the status but its only 15 minutes now. To make life easier, they had implemented the numbering system whereby customers were all given a number slip after choosing the Rojak items. Numbering display was installed at both the stalls front and the dining area.

Rojak Feast
We had chosen 12 items, from prawn crackers to jagung (sweet corn) dough balls, prawn fritters and assorted items that were available at the time of visit. Customers turnover rate was fast, that describes the time interval of how Mahboob topped up its Rojak items. They were freshly prepared when I ordered them.
Cost:
$14

Heap of Rojak!
Next, the rojak sauce! I drank 3 bowls of them. Yap, you did not read wrongly. The sauce was indeed highly addictive - orange-red looking sauce had a nice balance of sweet, spicy and flavorful taste which turned me so "thirsty". I made sure that every item dipped in was thoroughly coated and drenched with sauce dripping down as I pulled myself over for the food. :P

Rojak Sauce
Seriously Good Stuff! If you have a craving for something red or even on Indian Rojak, Al Mahboob is definitely worth traveling even from the west to Tampines to satisfy your hunger!
