Flyboy

While many have talked about Flyboy Yong Tau Foo at NeWest, we made a trip down to explore the eatery ourselves. As expected, it was packed with the lunch crowd, and we were lucky to snag a table.

Flyboy Yong Tau Foo

The menu is straightforward, offering five different sets, with the option to upgrade your steamed rice to bee hoon soup or braised pork bee hoon.

Menu

The cover page itself was eye-catching, illustrated with mouth-watering pictures of Yong Tau Foo that instantly set the appetite.

Menu

I went with their classic Handmade YTF set, one of the top sellers. Instead of the default rice, I upgraded to Bee Hoon Soup for an additional $1.50.

Set B - Classic Handmade Yong Tau Foo - $9.90

The YTF ingredients were served separately from the Bee Hoon Soup on a plate, featuring bittergourd, eggplant, tau kwa, tau pok, meatball, fishball, and beancurd skin. They were well-prepared and tasty, no complaints at all.

YTF Ingrediens of Set B

Set E turned out to be a bit of a disappointment, as we had high hopes for the Braised Pork Fried Bee Hoon. The taste was rather lacklustre and lacked the traditional braised pork flavor we were looking for. Nonetheless, the bee hoon and ingredients were neatly served on a plate, which included ngoh hiang, fried wonton, tau kwa, tau pok, and meatball. A small bowl of soup was also served on the side to pair along.

Set E - Braised Pork Fried Bee Hoon - $9.90

Overall, the taste was decent, but when factoring in the prices—with no GST but a 10% service charge, the simple YTF lunch may not feel entirely pocket-friendly.

OM Cafe

It had been quite some time since I first heard people raving about this café tucked away in West Coast Park. Curious about the buzz, I finally decided to pay a visit. The entire space felt like a charming glass house, with its bright and spacious design creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

Dining Interior

The full-length glass panels not only filled the café with natural light but also offered a scenic view of lush green grass patches, gardening tents, and the striking sight of tall hanging container cranes from the nearby port.

Looking out into the Field

The Chargrill Chicken Thigh at OM Café was a satisfying choice. The chicken was grilled to perfection, with a juicy and tender slab that retained its natural flavors. Paired with a generous portion of creamy mashed potato, the dish brought a comforting balance of textures. The medley of vegetables was elevated with a tangy and refreshing salsa, adding a vibrant kick that complemented the richness of the chicken. It’s a simple yet well-executed dish that highlights quality ingredients and thoughtful preparation.”

Char-Grilled Chicken Thigh - $18.90

The Half Chicken at OM Café was a substantial and satisfying dish. Coated in a savory light brown hickory sauce, the chicken boasted a glossy, appetizing appearance that matched its flavorful taste. The portion was generous, offering half a chicken cooked to tender perfection. Accompanying the star of the plate were three well-chosen sides: crispy golden fries, a juicy corn cob bursting with sweetness, and a refreshing coleslaw that added a creamy crunch. Together, the components created a well-rounded meal with a good mix of textures and flavors.

Hickory BBQ Chicken - $24.90

Overall, the food was decent, though the service leaned on the slower side. However, the peaceful and serene environment amidst the garden more than made up for it. I wouldn’t mind returning again to soak in the relaxing vibes.

Soon Lee Fishball Noodle

The competition remains tough with numerous Fishball Noodle Stalls in West Coast Market Square. Well, I will say each stall has their own supporters and fans. By the glance of the long snakey queue in front of Soon Lee Fishball Noodles, it's quite obvious why this stall has been there for decades.

Stall of Soon Lee Fishball Noodle

Here comes the bowl of nostalgic taste of Minced Meat Fishball Noodles. The Soup tasted good with 2 meatballs, 3 fishballs with vegetables, and "dong cai". Mee Pok on the other hand was well tossed in the sauces topped with minced meat and slices of fish cakes.

Mee Pok Dry - $4

Perhaps this is the longest time ever I had queued for Soon Lee Fishball Noodle, demanding a 30 minutes wait in queue on a weekend. No doubt it was simply executed, it still bring a good childhood taste that I believe the repeating patrons are going for.

Our Meal

Chicken Char Siew was sweet and savoury. The glossy red appearance makes it look appetising. The texture remains tender and the taste is addictive.

Char Siew Chicken - $7

We also have their Braised egg and Tofu.

Braised Egg + Tofu - $1 + $1

The vegetables were blanched then drenched with seasoning, followed by topping with fried shallot.  A simple dish that went so well with the plate of chicken rice.

Vegetables (Xiao Bai Cai) - $3.50

Tender and succulent steam chicken was served with fragrant chicken rice tucked with some vinegared cucumber which gave a refreshing note to the popular and comforting dish in Singapore.

Steam Chicken Rice

With 3 kinds of Laksa from the menu, Hum Laksa, Prawn Laksa and Chicken Laksa, its quite hard to decide which to have, thus we ended up with prawn Laksa topping up the order with "hum". The prawns were fresh and came with fish cake and half a boiled egg. The laksa broth is rich and aromatic. Its not spicy and overall taste was pretty indulging.

Prawn Laksa + Hum - $6.50 + $2.50

The guy who manned the stall was friendly and service with a smile despite the constant incoming orders.

Tua Keat Bak Kut Teh 大吉肉骨茶 [Closed]

Tua Keat Bak Kut Teh is located in a coffee shop near West Coast Plaza and within walking distance from West Coast Food Center. No doubt that its only a small stall in the coffee shop, I'm quite surprise by the number of dishes they offered on their menu.

Stall of Tua Keat Bak Kut Teh

Tua Keat Bak Kut Teh offers the Klang Style of Herbal Bak Kut Teh with a mixture of pork ribs, belly, enoki mushrooms, Tau Ki (aka beancurd skin), vegetables, button mushrooms, and lettuce. The sweet nature of pork complemented the earthy and slightly bitter herbal taste.

Chef preparing Herbal Bak Kut Teh's Order

Bak Kut Teh 肉骨茶 - $6.50 / $12

Braised Pork Trotter was bone-falling tender and big with generous portions.

Braised Pork Trotter 卤猪脚 - $5.50

The Black Vinegar Pork Trotter is often known as the confinement dish. This dish is less often found on the hawkers' menus. Black Vinegar Pork Trotter always gives a distinctive and unforgettable flavour profile. The tender meat in combination with the flavourful and tangy sauce with the fatty nature of the pork is indeed awesome. Love the dish with the hint of sourness!

Black Vinegar Pork Trotter 猪脚醋 - $5.50

The quick-handed guy who manned the stall alone and managed the orders in a breeze. Salute him that he can actually whip up so many kinds of dishes on the menu being a one-man show. Besides that, he is friendly and never fails to smile.

The man behind Tua Keat Bak Kut Teh

Here's what we ordered for our meal! Let's start our scrumptious meal!

Our Order

Love this popular Chinese dish known for its tender chicken and delicious sauce that is perfect to pair with our rice bowl. This Drunken Ginger Chicken brings the warmth of ginger with the boldness of alcohol.

Drunken Ginger Chicken 黄酒鸡 - $5.50

One of the sides I must have in my Bak Kut Teh Meal is this Fried Fritter aka Bak Kut Teh. I would use this crispy You Tiao and soak them in my soup!

You Tiao 油条 - $1.50

Soak up the essence from the herbal Bak Kut Teh Soup with a cut of the fried fritters. This is so yummy!

You Tiao in Bak Kut Teh

While there is the soup version of Bak Kut Tehm these Sweet and savoury tones of the meat served in the earthen claypot will be the Dry Pot Bak Kut Teh on the Menu. It has hints of spiciness and meat was abundantly coated in the sauce. However, we felt that the final touch of the dish could be livened up if they do include the shredded dried cuttlefish in it.

Dry Pot Bak Kut Teh 干锅肉骨茶 - $5

The curry chicken was aromatic, creamy and rich in flavour. It featured tender pieces of chicken and potato chunks within. The harmonious mix of flavours and texture was delightful. It goes well with our bowl of white rice. Do note that they

Curry Chicken 咖喱鸡 - $5.50

Not a lot of places have this on their menu too. The fried porridge has an umami taste and contains some burnt taste from the claypot. The pot lards also elevate the taste of it.

Fried Porridge 炒粥 - $4

Thank you Lao Niang Agency and Tua Keat Bak Kut Teh for the invitation.

Taman Selera West Coast

I used to visit Taman Selera West Coast for their Mee Rebus Satay as it is a special dish that we seldom get to see from the hawkers. However, today we are not ordering this dish as the guests were craving local meat skewers aka Satay.

Taman Selera West Coast

We had 10 Sticks of Chicken and 10 Sticks of Mutton. They were well-marinated and barbecued, tasty! Each Satay costs $0.90 and there is a minimum order of 10 pieces.

Slice Fish Fish Head Seafood Soup

Updated 10th September 2023

My visit back here reminds me of the pricing of how much inflation is today. For every time I return once in a while, the price of my favourite bowl of Sliced Fish Noodles with Meatballs just went up.

Sliced Fish Noodles with Meatballs - $7.50

Nonetheless, it's still one of the best Sliced Fish noodles in the Western Part of Singapore with its unique taste. The consistency of taste is still there after so many years.

Fish & Meatball

Fishhead lovers might want to try this! The soup was added with ginger to reduce the fishy taste and definitely worth a try.

Fishhead Noodles Soup - $7.50

You will be provided with an empty bowl to dispose the bones and yes the price is the same as a bowl of sliced fish noodle too.

Fishhead

Updated 9th January 2022

After so many years, a bowl of sliced fish soup has increased its price till $7 per bowl. Nonetheless, the meatball and sliced fish are still very tasty, taste is still as the same 9 years back.

Sliced Fish with Meatballs Soup - $7

Slice Fish Fish Head Seafood Soup? A stall with no name to be found even after having a hard time searching for it at every corner of the stall.

My visit to West Coast Market Square was very frequent, at least 10 times a month and this stall is one of the many stalls that draws the crowd especially during meal times. Everytime, without fail, I get to see a neat queue form in front of the stall.

Health-conscious patrons, this is for you if you are not sure what to eat on West Coast!

The Stall
Stall #01-138, Look at the Queue

A basic bowl of slice fish soup costs $4.50 and one can request for meatball add-on at $1.00. However, if you feel that a total of $5.50 is too expensive for a meal, you can request for a mix at $4.50.

The soup base was a bit chalky, unlike the normal clear fish soup we had. Not only that, it had a very unique taste as compared to its competitor in the vicinity and not that kind of taste that we would have expected. Bee Hoon was smooth and silky, therefore good chopstick grabbing skills is required. Beside slices of fish, a small wedge of tomato is added with Chinese parsley (yan sui) as well as fried onions.

Sliced Fish Soup with Meat Balls - $4.50

Adding their homemade meatballs is definitely recommended. The meatballs were made up of minced meat with hints of salted fish. Bouncy and delicious, goes very well with the soup.

Yummy Meat Balls

The slices of fish given was fresh and thick with a smooth textural feel.

Sliced Fish

Perhaps the downside may be its steep pricing when we could get a bowl of fish bee hoon at $3 but considering the portion and freshness, the amount paid was well worth it.

Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle

Despite having a few outlets around the island, the one that I frequently patronised will be this stall at Ayer Rajah Hawker Center. The stall is manned by a friendly couple and the food is value for money in terms of the portion as well as taste.

Stall of Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle

My favourite order will be none other than their Soy Sauce Chicken Hor Fun for they taste so good to me. The skin was glistering brown in colour and the soy sauce flavours penetrates well into the meat with the right sweetness and texture.

Soy Sauce Chicken Hor Fun - $3.50

The smoothness of taste with tender chicken paired with the bowl of herbal soup and Hor Fun was my satisfying meal. Its definite that I will be returning for more.

Wicked Greens

Eating healthy and clean have been seen as an increasing trend in recent years when people are more health conscious. We decided to grab something healthy and headed over to Wicked Greens which is located just outside West Coast Plaza. The location was rather obvious as they are just right beside the overhead bridge and beside the Taxi Stand.

Over at this corner, the wall surface was entirely decorated by a bed of roses with its business name "Wicked Greens" lit up. Furnishings in the eating place was simple with some tables and chairs while the theme colour is majority made up of romantic pink.

Their homemade barley was unique, not too sweet with hints of refreshing lemon taste and natural sweetness from red dates. The drink is slightly brown in colour and you can enjoy some pearl barley at the bottom of the glass.

After some consideration and recommendation by the counter auntie, we finally made up our choices and had our orders.

The Keto Friendly Salad was made up of beef brisket, avocado, 2 sous vide eggs, chicken breast, roman lettuce and toasted almonds. The portion of meat was generous and tender. The beef brisket was flavourful and the salad base dressing was good. The eggs were perfectly done.

The presentation of the Pasta with broccoli, cherry tomatoes, corn kernels and sous vides egg looks catchy to the eyes because of their colour combination. While the crispy fried soft shell crab was served on a separate plate accompanied by some fiery chilli sauce.
