Ming Li's Seafood

Visited Ming Li’s Seafood at Sims Ave for some comforting Cze Char dishes. It was nice to learn that the entire coffeeshop is run by the boss himself, from the Seafood Stall to the Roasted Meat and Handmade Noodle stalls. No sublets, just one owner keeping it all in the family.

Ming Li

The fried prawn roll was yummy and perfectly fried to a golden brown. It came served with fresh tomato, vegetables, and cucumber on the side. Just dip the prawn roll into the sauce and enjoy, simple and satisfying!

Fried Prawn Roll 虾枣 - $13 / 20 / 25

For those who enjoy “xi hum” (clams), you might want to try their fragrant fried clams too, it’s a pleasant surprise since not many Cze Char places include this on the menu. The dish was aromatic and well-executed, with just the right kick of flavour without being too spicy.

Fragrant Fried Clams 甘香炒西蛤 - $15 / $30

We also tried their Fishball with Sliced Meat Ban Mian. The highlight? The fishballs are all handmade from scratch, just like their fresh Ban Mian noodles. It was simply delicious, comforting, bouncy fishballs and hearty noodles that really hit the spot.

Fishball & Sliced Meat Ban Mian 鱼圆肉片板面

We really enjoyed the Ban Mian with Fishball Soup and sliced meat, each piece of noodle was satisfying, and the warm, flavourful broth made it such a comforting dish. Perfect for a hearty, fuss-free meal.

Ban Mian

We also had the Di Huang Miao with Dried Shrimp,  a simple stir-fry that packed a nice savoury punch from the dried shrimp. Fresh, crunchy greens with that bit of umami always make a good side to balance out the meal.

Di Huang Miao With Dried Shrimp 虾米帝王苗 - $10 / 12 /15

That’s one of those dishes people say, if you like it, you’ll love it. And yes, it definitely hit the spot! I really enjoyed the Petai with prawns and onions, super addictive, with that bold, unique flavour that kept me picking at the beans non-stop.

Sambal Chilli Beans 三峇臭豆 - $13 / 18 /25

The Curry Fish Head is here! The curry is made from scratch, not your usual off-the-shelf paste — and you can really taste the difference. We loved the distinctive flavours of the rich, thick gravy, which was robust but not gelat at all. It came loaded with ingredients like brinjal, tau pok, lady’s fingers, and beancurd skin, all bubbling away in an earthy claypot. A real treat for curry lover.

Curry Fish Head 咖喱鱼头 - $30

We also got a chance to try their century egg porridge, simple, warm, and so comforting. A classic bowl that really hits the spot, especially if you’re craving something light yet satisfying.

Century Egg Porridge皮蛋粥 - $5

The porridge was hearty and filled with generous ingredients — tender meat and chunks of century egg in every scoop. It was the kind of comforting bowl that warms you up and leaves you feeling satisfied.

Centry Egg & Ingredients

Many swear by their Fragrant Sesame Oil Chicken and it didn’t disappoint. The alluring aroma from the fried ginger shreds and rich sesame oil was da bomb. Each piece of chicken was well-coated in the savoury sauce, making every bite extra flavourful and satisfying.

Fragrant Sesame Oil Chicken 麻油鸡 - $25 /45

The Assam Steamed Fish Head was equally inviting. Compared to the Curry Fish Head, I found myself more drawn to its tangy and spicy sauce, refreshing and appetising. It’s said that the sauce is made from scratch too, which really shows in the vibrant, well-balanced flavours.

Assam Steamed Fish Head 亚参蒸鱼头 - $30

By the time the Braised Pork Knuckle arrived, our stomachs were already filled with so much delicious food but we couldn’t resist. Even though we were full, we still managed to polish the plate clean. The texture was perfect: the meat fell apart with the slightest pressure and practically melted in the mouth. The braising was spot on, rich and flavourful, making this dish a satisfying finale to our feast.

Braised Pork Knuckle 卤猪手 - $30

From comforting bowls of porridge to fragrant clams, hearty curry, and melt-in-your-mouth pork knuckle, every dish made our meal memorable. Good food, generous portions, and honest flavours, we left happy and will gladly be back for more.

Toto Seafood

Thanks to the December Baby who was craving for Crabs and we ended up at this popular seafood place that had recently gone viral for their Pet-Friendly environment. If you are thinking of having some Malaysian-style Cze Char and bringing your fur kids out, you may want to consider this place.

TOTO Seafood

What a quirky description on their menu. "It's very FUN, HOR". The Hor Fun had subtle "Wok Hei" fragrant with the standard ingredients like squid, pork, prawns and vegetables, soaked in the umami flavours of the luscious gooey seafood broth.

Seafood Hor Fun 海鲜河粉 - $12

Just take a look at the gooey broth with eggs. We enjoy the sweet and savoury broth with the big pieces of rice noodles aka Hor Fun.

Do you like Hor Fun?

A light and simple dish with stirred fried Dragon Chives with Shimeiji Mushrooms sprinkled with some chilli powder. It helped to balance out the heavy taste of the crab dishes that we ordered.

Dragon Chives with Shimeiji Mushrooms 白玉菇青龙菜 - $12

Recently, this style of cooking Lala has become popular on the menu. They tasted like chilli with curry powder with the sight of curry leaves.

Kam Heong Lala 甘香啦啦 - $15

These packet of disposable gloves come in handy for those who do not want to dirty their hands during feasting. They look so cute in their packaging.

Gloves Packet

They have a promotion of 2 crabs for $88, attracting the Crab lovers. However, the 2 crabs' flavours must be of the same, else $10 has to be added for a different flavour. Since we were having Chilli Crabs, the ordering of Fried Mantou was essential in dipping the leftover savoury Sauce of the crab.

Fried Mantou 炸馒头 - $4

We ordered 2 Chilli Crabs and Chilli Crab was cooked in Malaysian Style, delicious and popular among us. However, if you are a fan of Sri Lankan Crabs, this might disappoint you. Nonetheless, the flesh was still plump and succulent.

Chilli Crab 辣椒螃蟹 - $88

Let's grab the claw and tug in!

Chilli Crab

The Black Pepper Crab gets the nods from most of us. The Crab was nicely coated in the savoury and peppery taste of the sauce adequately, without being too overpowering.

Black Pepper Crab 黑胡椒螃蟹 - $98

I'm not a fan of spicy crabs so out of the 3 flavours, I preferred the Cream & Salted Egg Crab. Sweet and savoury sauce coating the crab. Yummy!

Cream & Salted Egg Crab 奶油咸蛋螃蟹

We used to travel all the way to Johor Bahru for the San Low Fried Bee Hoon but such a dish seems to be popular and common in most places of Singapore now. San Low Fried Bee Hoon is known for its charred edges and flattened pancake shape bee hoon.

San Low Fried Bee Hoon 三楼炒米粉 - $10

A special Tofu dish that I had, soaked in Thai Style Sweet and Spicy Sauce while the Tofu has a thin crispy fried layer at the top with deep-fried baby shrimp while maintaining the natural wobbly and smooth silky texture of the nutritional Tofu.

Princess Tofu 怡保香妃虾米豆腐 - $12

Quite a misleading dish if you are looking to have more Tofu in the dish. The dish was recommended by one of the servers. It was crispy fried to golden with fillings of minced meat and century egg. drizzled with a sweet sauce that reminds me of having "Ngoh Hiong' instead.

Deep Fried Ipoh Seafood Tofu 招牌怡保黄金炸豆腐 - $14

Service was lacking and it's something that they can improve on, we have been waving frantically multiple of times before the servers attended to us. Nonetheless, there are no 10% GST charges from them too.

The Hare

"The Hare" is located in Geylang. Being both pub and restaurant, The Hare is known for its cozy atmosphere and a wide selection of drinks and food. The Hare is relatively new and its a local Tapas Hotspot by Chef Daniel Koh.

The Hare

Interior looks rustic and have a long counter area looking into their kitchen area. With grey as the major theme color and its interior furnishing, the place makes us feel cozy and want to dine longer there.

Dining Area

Oysters

Oysters were served in a plate of 6 with grilled Mentaiko. The presentation scores with its attractive colorful combinations of Orange Mentaiko, Yellow Lemon and green garnishing.

Grilled Mentaiko Oysters - $35 / 6 PCS

I’m amplifying the flavour of my oysters by squeezing some lemon juice over them. These plump and juicy oysters were fresh and went well with the swirls of grilled mentaiko.

Squeezing some Lemon Juice

Skewers By The Stick

We were in the mood for skewers and ordered the Three Musketeers that comprise of Brocolli, Shitake & Abalone Mushroom, Duo-Colour Squash). The taste was decent except that there was a tad too much salt on the brocolli.

On top of that, we ordered Isoyaki Abalone. It was juicy and yummy.

Three Musketeers + Isoyaki Abalone - $6 + $12

Mains

We ordered the Rib Eye Steak with medium doneness. Pairing our steak with brown sauce and a side as mashed potato. The meat was rich in flavours and tender with a pink center. Juicy is the word and the marbling meat add a depth to the flavours. The well prepared steak was topped with red peppercorns delivering a satisfying dining experience.

Rib Eye Steak (220G) - $34

In addition, the provided red wine sauce elevates the dish, pushing up the level of savouriness in the dish. What an indulgence!

Pink Center

With the Rose Wine Lamb Shank as a recommendation on their Menu, I ordered this dish. The Lamb Shank was succulent and well soaked up in its Rose Wine Sauce beautifully topped with Salsa. It was a harmonious union of sweet rose wine with tender lamb meat.

Rose Wine Lamb Shank - $24

Bone falling meat and fork tender lamb shank. The moisture and juiciness had been well retained while the meat undergone the braising process. The lamb had absorb the braising gravy well and yes to this dish!

Do remember to make reservations if you are dining in groups. Parking can be a little bit tricky especially in the area, nonetheless, we parked comfortably at the opened carpark opposite to Aljunied MRT Station.

Lion City Claypot Frog Porridge 狮城田鸡粥

With the recent relaxing of Covid rules, Geylang starts to gain back its life again, especially the eateries in the area that was struggling throughout the pandemic period. My initial intention to Geylang was to patronise some Taiwanese Snacks Eateries but only to realize that the shop had closed down for good.

While along the walk to the intended place, the aroma of the fried oysters caught my appetite.

Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge

Since it was sharing the same coffee shop as the popular Lion City Claypot Frog Porridge, we took the chance to have that for a meal. After browsing through my article, I realised that my last visit to the place was about 7 years back ~ that was a long time ago.

The Coffee Shop

I took the opportunity to order some "starters" while waiting for our "Main Course".

Fried Oyster - $5

The Fried Oyster has a good ratio of starchy portion to charred areas. What I love about that was that it was loaded with Chinese parsley that enhances the taste.

A piece of Fried Oyster Egg

Dipping these oysters into the chilli help to cover up some of the seafood smell and that actually goes well with everything.

Fried Oyster

After ordering the porridge, we placed the number tag on our table so that its visible to the server to get our orders to our table.

For the Servers

Simply love the consistency of their porridge, smooth and creamy, loaded with lots of chopped spring onions.

Claypot Porridge - $3

The sweet black sauce with spring onion and ginger slices is actually my all-time favourite.  If you prefer to have some spicy flavours for the frog leg, you may want to order their Dry Chilli Frog Leg instead.

Ginger Spring Onion Frog Leg - $23

The meat is fresh and tender. The bite on the meat was definitely springy and the sweet sauce coating in its condiments were yummy.

Frog Leg Meat

Even without the frog leg, I can solely have the porridge with the ginger spring onion sauce for a meal.

My Individual Serving

With a few reputable competitors around, I still find that the Lion City Claypot Frog Porridge at Geylang Lorong 9 still serve deserves my visit all this while. The service still remain as efficient with food served in an orderly manner.

Posted on 18th April 2015

Talking about the food in Geylang Lorong 9, it is obviously known for its Beef Kway Teow and Frog Porridge which are just located opposite each other separated by a road. If you are preparing to have both for dinner, do not worry about making two trips as whatever you ordered from the Beef Kway Teow territory can be served to the Frog Porridge territory and vice versa.

Having Frog Porridge from Lion City Claypot is top of my choice whenever I think of having such porridge, however if you are driving there it may be a little challenging as parking lots are limited.

Geylang Lorong 9
Fried Oysters can be ordered too if you like. For those who do may feel hungry after the frog porridge, it is recommended to order their Beef Kway Teow over the plate of Oysters.

Oyster - $5

As a fried oyster lover, I find that this dish was rather average, nothing much to rave about.

Close up

Lion City Claypot is rather popular and finally after about 30 minutes of waiting, our dinner is here. Slices of ginger were added with cut spring onions were added in reduce the smell.

The meat was tender and for those who have not tried before, it texture was similar to chicken but on a delicate side.

Ginger and Spring Onion Frog - $22

Close up

Porridge was thick and gooey, topped with chopped fresh green onions and this pot of cantonese style plain porridge was at its best consumption when you scoop some fragrant gravy from the frog leg claypot. As they are placed in the scalding hot claypot, do remember to be careful during handling.

Plain Porridge - $4 (Large)

Out of the few Frog Porridge places in Geylang, the crowd of Lion City best explains its popularity and the standard of food. However, as compared to my previous visits, they have not been maintaining the standards.
