Lao Jiang Superior Soup

It's kind of sad to see that the days of JCube are numbered for they will be closing down in August 2023 soon to make way for a 40 Storey High Residential development. I guessed this mall will be missed.

Lao Jiang Superior Soup is one of the eating places that we visited before JCube's closure. No doubt that Lao Jiang Superior Soup has many branches, this was actually the first time I had ever visited this branch.

The Signature Superior Soup comes with a bowl of noodles and we had chosen Mee Kia. This Premium bowl of fresh seafood and meat is paired with Lao Jiang's aromatic soup broth which is boiled for hours. Despite it looks simple, it carries a complex flavour in their soup especially.

Signature Superior Soup 招牌一品汤 (含干捞河粉)- $11.80

While staring at the menu, I find it hard to resist especially when I saw Teochew Red Grouper on it. The Traditional Teochew Style Fresh Red Grouper Fish Soup was prepared in their aromatic soup broth. I paired this bowl of Fish Soup with Dry Hor Fun. The Dry Hor Fun was tossed in their secret homemade black sauce and sambal chilli.

Teochew Red Grouper Fish Soup 潮州红斑鱼汤 - $14

Their standards are still pretty uniform and perhaps this is my first and last chance in visiting their outlet in JCube.

Soi Thai Kitchen [Closed]

Clams were fresh and well cooked with their special Thai Chilli Sauce with spring onions. It goes well as a side dish with the mains.

Stir-Fried Clams with Thai Chilli Sauce 泰式辣味啦啦 - $13

Comparing the same dish we used to have years back, the presentation of Squid with Lime Sauce has significantly improved. The squid was beautifully cut and curled up while the zesty lime taste with a tad spicy kick made this dish the crowd's pleaser.

Squid with Lime Sauce 辣椒柠檬墨鱼- $13

Thai Vermicelli was stirred-fried with prawns, meat, carrot, chilli and beansprouts.

Thai Vermicelli - $7

The plate of Basil Rice with Egg can be served with Pork or Chicken. The basil scent was adequate and a portion of rice to meat was good.

Basil Rice with Egg (Pork) - $7

Wok fried taste and the alluring fragrance of the use of fried onions were addictive. Get some squeeze of Thai Lime onto this dish to enjoy the dish with elevated fruity citrus.

Fried Kway Teow with Kai Lan - $7

It has been a long time since my last visit and still, they are one of my best choices for Thai Food in the Western part of Singapore. With their $6 Set Lunch promotion Monday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm it makes it so affordable and tempting for me to come here frequently. Their lunch set menu is limited with one main dish listed on the menu with a choice of drinks at $6.

Calamansi & Lemongrass drink

Well fried with strong Wok Hei, these Drunken Noodles are firey thus beware if you do not intend to take spicy dishes. Drunken noodles ingredients includes shredded squid and kiffir Lime Leaves elevating the taste.

Phad Thai is always on a sweeter side coupled with peanuts and chilli flakes by the side. The Phad Thai is deliciously coated in its tangy and sweet sauce with a generous amount of eggs. Other ingredients include prawns, chive and beansprouts.

These prawn cakes are ordered additionally on top of the lunch promotion set meals. The texture is similar to what we have from the fish cakes. These cakes were coated with crumbs and accompanied with Thai Sweet and Sour Chilli Sauce.

Prawn Cakes - $8

They were fried to golden perfection.

Beautifully Fried to Golden Brown

The texture was soft and springy with a sweet-tasting bite. Coupled with the sweet and sour chilli sauce and it makes this appetiser so welcoming for us.

Lately, Soi Thai has been my frequently visited eatery. Having visited Soi Thai Kitchen in Tampines & Soi Thai Kitchen in Jurong West quite some years back, I'm glad that they are spreading the wings further creating more outlets offering more wallet-friendly authentic Thai Cuisine.

This is our all-time favourite and with the request of less spiciness so that we won't be swallowing down the chilli seeds. We prefer the clear version and customers can have the choice of chicken Tom Yam or Seafood Tom Yam Soup.

Clear Tom Yam Soup 冬炎清汤
Clear Tom Yam Soup 冬炎清汤 - $7

Mango Salad is one of the recommendations on the menu. It's appetizing and too we requested for the less spicy version. Shredded mango is tossed with peanuts, fish sauce, coriander, carrot, onions and lime juice. It's quite addictive and makes a great side dish.

Mango Salad 芒果沙拉 - $6

Their fishcakes come in a plate of four and are recommended to order especially if you have kids. Its fried and crispy on the exterior, different from the ones that most Thai Restaurants would serve. Fishcake is springy and great to go with its sweet chilli sauce.

Fish Cake 鱼饼

Beautifully served in star shape in pieces of 8, suitable for sharing if you are dining in group.

Thai Pan Fried Prawn Pizza 泰式虾披萨

If you are looking to order greens from their menu, the Stir Fried Kai Lan is of excellent choice. It is fried together in minced garlic and oyster sauce with slices of carrot.

Stir Fried Kai Lan 芥蓝炒蚝油

We simply love the Premium Fried Pork Cheek as its roasted to perfection, crispy outside with crunchy edges and was not too dry. Meat was chewy and best combination if you dip them into the given chilli sauce.

If you love the scent of basil, you may like to order this dish and pair along with rice. This is one of the popular ordered dishes among diners especially if you are dining in a group and sharing dishes.

Basil Pork 九层塔炒猪肉碎
Basil Pork 九层塔炒猪肉碎 - $7

Though Stir-Fried Clams with Thai Chilli Sauce is a recommended dish on the menu, we did not find the dish anything out of the ordinary. It's spicy as indicated and the only thing is that the clams were fresh.

Stir Fried Clams with Thai Chilli Sauce 泰式辣味啦啦
Stir-Fried Clams with Thai Chilli Sauce 泰式辣味啦啦 - $12

Squid rings are recommended as they are meaty and fresh. The lime juice together with the chilli gravy had given a zesty sour yet sweet and spicy flavour to the dish.

Squid with Lime Sauce 辣椒柠檬墨鱼

If you are going for an individual portion, you can try ordering their Thai Fried Kway Tiao. The "Wok-Hei" together with the kiffir Lime had spelt a difference on the dish. Ingredients are simple slices of carrot, chicken, Kailan and egg.

Thai Fried Kway Tiao with Kai Lan 泰式炒粿条

A dish that you either like it or hate. While I enjoy the fragrance of olive oil, I find that the dish tastes great though it might look plain without many ingredients.

Olive Fried Rice 橄榄炒饭
Olive Fried Rice 橄榄炒饭 - $6

The soft sweet savoury pineapple fried rice was spot on. Ingredients lend a good texture with chewy raisins, crunchy cashew nuts and fragrantly prepared together with meat floss.

Pineapple Rice 黄梨炒饭

We had Red Ruby dessert to complete our meal. Glad that dessert tasted alright without having an overpowering coconut milk taste with sago. What's more, I love the crunchiness of the rubies.

Red Ruby 红宝石
Red Ruby 红宝石 - $3

The milk tea has subtle tea fragrance, not too strong and has a good milk taste, likewise, for the Ice Thai Green Tea, both levels of sweetness is great.

Thai Iced Tea & Thai Ice Green Tea - $3 Each
Soi Thai Kitchen is serving authentic Thai Food at affordable pricing without GST charges. Basically, that's the main reason why we are returning there so often! I guess its queue also tells us that it's well-liked by many.

Ayam Penyet President

Craving for some good Ayam Penyet and luckily there is this popular chained restaurant selling Indonesian Cuisine. They are known for their succulent and well marinated famous Ayam Penyet served with addictive spicy chilli that will give you a gastronomic experience.

Ayam Penyet President

The default item that patrons will order, Smashed Fried Chicken aka Ayam Penyet. Their Signature smashed fried chicken cannot go wrong for their business name has been giving this name a big weightage. Chicken was crispy and served with fried crispy crumbs too. Fragrant and best of all, tender on the inside. It is served with Tofu, Tempeh, and their signature chilli paste.

Ayam Penyet - $6.90

The Grilled Chicken which is also known as Ayam Bakar was grilled to perfection. The sweet tasting layer coated their Signature grilled chicken was served with grilled tofu, tempeh, slice of cucumber and tomato. The tender chicken was already good alone by itself. It comes with cut chili in black sauce, however if you like to have additional firey kick for the meal, dabbed them into their Belacan Chilli.

Grilled Chicken - $6.90

The Grilled Beef is also known as Empal Bakar. The portion of meat was grilled and marinated with spices that gave a hint of sweetness. The meat was quite tough for me. This dish is served with grilled tofu, beancake and black sauce.

Grilled Beef - $8.90

The chicken did not include rice. You can pair them with either the pure white rice at $1 or this Yellow Fragrant rice. The portion of the rice is big and the strong tumeric fragrance can be smelled from a distance. The plate of rice is served with shredded eggs, sliced beancake dish and cucumber.

Yellow Fragrant Rice - $2.20

For those who need soup, it is free flow and self-service over at the counter near the kitchen. Those it was tasty, they tasted quite peppery.

Soup Self Service

The Indonesian Salad aka Gado-gado that I always cand go without if they have such an item on the menu. The dish consist of rick cake served with crackers and steamed vegetables with peanut sauce as dressing.

Gado-gado - $6.50

There is so many favourite items and one of them is none other than their Tahu Telor. Its Indonesian style beancurd omelette is garnished with beansprouts, sliced carrot and sliced cucumber. These items are served with rich peanut sauce

Tahu Telor - $6.50

Avocado Juice has always been my favourite choice in an Indonesian eating place. They are known for its high level of fats in which 60% are monosaturated fats and these are beneficial to lowering blood pressure and protect against heart disease.

Avocado Juice - $4.90

Cravings for a good Ayam Penyet meal were satisfied by our trip to JCube.

Big Fish Small Fish

If you have been to the Far-Flung Punggol East of Singapore, you will know that Big Fish Small Fish started from the Punggol Container Park serving Fish & Chips meals in the container settings. They have then expanded into the malls around Singapore retaining its Container Theme.

Container Industrial Theme

The settings were a replica of the Industrial Environment with containers, wood crates and expose pipping, even Graffiti on the wall.

Graffiti Theme

We are opting for the value lunch sets that come with the Fish and Crisps with soft drink and 1 item of our choice (Soup / Coleslaw / Cinnamon Churros). They are different types of Fish that BFSF offers, namely Snow Cod, Halibut, Haddock, Sea Bass, Hoki and Dory.

Menu

Lunch Set Menu

BFSF (Big Fish Small Fish) aims to provide affordable Fish & Chips with a variety of fish and sauces catering to every taste bud in an enjoyable and casual environment.

Types of Fish

The Lunch Set was value for money and comes with a soft drink and an item of our choice. We had 2 set meals and had chosen the soup as well as the coleslaw.

Lemon & Lime Twist, Orange Minute Maid with Soup of the Day

The soup was appetising and comes with chunks of ingredients.

Soup with the Meal

On the other hand, coleslaw was decent, not too milky and mixed in with some raises. The style was not to my liking and I will prefer the soup instead.

Coleslaw

We had the Signature Halibut where the fish was battered and served with freshly sliced potato crips or premium skin-on fries. Their batter is light and even though it was deep-fried with a crispy exterior, the fish remains juicy and moist internally. The Halibut meat was sweet and I love the natural density of the meat.

Signature Halibut - $17.80

In another set lunch, we chose the Hoki fish which is naturally sweet and moist in flavour. The meat was lean and firm but made up of delicate flakes. Instead of the potatoes crisp, we have skipped them and topped up the meal with the Turkey Bacon Mac & Cheese.

Signature Hoki - $13.90

If you are a Mac & Cheese Lover, these Turkey Bacon Mac & Cheese should not be missed! They are yummy! You can change the crisps from the set to this, Pilaf Rice, mashed potatoes with brown sauce or even Skin-On Fries.

Turkey Bacon Mac & Cheese - Topped up at $1.50 with Value Meal

The variety of sauces that they offered left an impression and thus make my return. They have creative sauces like Cheese, Curry and even salted Egg sauce that enhance our fish & chips dining experience. Beware, these are very addictive.
