Flips N Dips

Visiting Flips N Dips, a Muslim-owned Western food stall at Boon Lay Drive. Previously at Jurong Point’s food court, they’ve since expanded with several outlets across Singapore.

Besides the usual Western fare like Fish & Chips, Chicken Chop, and Crispy Chicken Cutlet (served with fries and coleslaw), their menu also features Pasta, Bagel, and Sedap Mie categories—each offering a variety of choices.

For just $1 more, you can add on their sauce dipper, with unique flavors such as Cheese, Masak Merah, Chilli Crab, Black Pepper, and more.

For sides, we went with their fries, choosing the FND Special, topped generously with mentaiko and spicy mayo sauce.

Curly Fries

For fried rice, we opted for the Chili Crab Fried Rice (mildly spicy) over the Kicap version. It came paired with our chosen Tempura Squid, selected from options like chicken chop, cutlet, dory fish, grilled salmon, or beef patty. The dish was completed with sides of coleslaw and crispy papadum.

Chilli Crab Fried Rice with Tempura Squid - $12.90

The Sedap Mie set includes four items on the plate: a sunny-side-up egg, creamy coleslaw, chicken chop cut into bite-sized pieces, and springy mie noodles topped with a slice of melted cheese.

Sedap Mie (Chicken Chop) - $8.50

What caught my interest was the inclusion of bagels on the menu, each with a few tempting variations. We went for the Truffle Beef Bagel, paired with loaded fries.

Truffle Beef Bagel with Loaded Fries -$11.50

Overall, I found the variety to be ample. Diners are definitely spoilt for choice here. It's an enjoyable spot to explore different flavors!

Hey! Teppan ヘイ! 鉄板

My friend always quips, "East Side, the Best Side," whenever the topic comes up, knowing full well that I'm a proud West Sider. Naturally, I always debate back, championing the West Side for its array of great food options. After all, good food knows no boundaries—it's all about discovering the hidden gems in every corner!

Hey! Teppan

The style of Hey! Teppan instantly reminded me of Pepper Lunch, where the dishes are served on a sizzling hotplate. Just like at Pepper Lunch, you're handed the reins to customize your meal—adding sauces and mixing everything together to your liking. The interactive dining experience is both fun and satisfying, making every bite uniquely yours.

Our Orders

The Squid and Prawn Pepper Rice is a straightforward yet appealing dish. The rice takes center stage on the hotplate, surrounded by five prawns and five pieces of squid, neatly arranged. Bright yellow corn kernels and a generous sprinkle of black pepper sit atop the rice, adding color and flavor. The simplicity of the presentation draws attention to the sizzling freshness of the ingredients.

                          Squid & Prawn Pepper Rice - $12.50

The Hey! Angus Sirloin Steak looks far more enticing and hearty, perfect for those seeking a satisfying meal. The sizzling hotplate is generously filled, featuring a succulent Angus sirloin steak accompanied by a colorful array of edamame, corn kernels, broccoli, and cabbage. On the side, there's a comforting serving of rice and creamy mashed potatoes. To top it off, fried garlic and black pepper are added, enhancing both the aroma and flavor. This dish truly offers a well-rounded and indulgent dining experience.

Qin Ji Rougamo 秦记肉夹馍

We can see that the Chinese Crispy Burger Fast Food Outlet or similar stalls are increasing and gaining popularity around us. The good news for those who love these Chinese Burgers is that they are expanding around the island.

Qin Ji RouGaMo

We ordered a set with a crispy burger, drink and noodles.

Our Order

The Braised Beef Rice Noodle was addictive. The noodles were smooth and the beef was well braised and soaked in sweet sour soup broth with chickpeas, mixed vegetable beans, coriander and preserved vegetables. The bowl of noodles has hints of peppercorn but luckily not too strong.

Braised Beef Rice Noodle

The first bite of this crispy Burger reminds me of crispy roti prata or even Chinese scallion pancakes, unlike the Rougamo that we tried earlier from the other brand in Westgate. Qin Ji's crispy baked pastry is sandwiched by juicy pork.

Cumin Pork

The pork was stewed for about 10 hours to achieve the tenderness. We had the Cumin Pork Rougamo and it features aromatic notes of spice.

Fillings

Overall, I find that Qin Ji has a better and crispy Rougamo as compared to the one I recently had.

West Lake 西湖小吃

This kiosk has been a hidden gem in Jurong Point Shopping Malls over the years. I started patronizing West Lake when my classmate introduced their famous Braised Pork Bun. This Signature Dish is a traditional delicacy that cannot be missed whether when you are dining in or taking it away.

Stopping over at the kiosk for some snacks and decided to order their Chee Cheong Fun with Special Sauce. Chee Cheong Fun aka rice vermicelli rolls was smooth and drenched with a special unique sauce that is different from the usual ones I had.

The Kong Bak Pau is to be died for. The soft pillowy bun cradling the slab of well-flavoured pork belly. Overall taste was not overwhelming and was succulent and if you do not mind that fatty meat, I would say it's the best I had so far from a kiosk.

Although it may be kind of expensive I find that the quality and taste are worth my money and to splurge on this.

Ba-Jie Kao Kha Moo [Closed]

The news of the revamped food court in Jurong Point had reached me over in the social media and it was said that there are a lot of changes in the food stalls. Upon seeing the Ba Jie picture, I had my mind fixed on the famous Bangkok Pork Leg Rice.

Ba-Jie Kao Kha Moo
Ba-Jie Kao Kha Moo

Kao Kha Moo aka Thai Pork Leg Rice is a popular Thai Street dish loved by both locals and tourists. Its a simple and hearty meal made up of well-braised pork leg, preserved vegetables, braised egg as well as som vegetables.

Thai Pork Leg Rice Set
Thai Pork Leg Rice Set - $7

Thai Pork Leg was definitely well braised to the point where I exerted the slightest force and the meat was easily disintegrated. Although it was a Thai Cuisine, I find that the taste was pretty standard just like the normal Pork Leg we had with braised sauce drenching over the plate of white rice.

Nevertheless, it is still a good experience tasting it. I will be back for other interesting stalls in the renovated Kopitiam, hopefully soon.

King of Prawn Noodles

King of Prawn Noodles has taken over the shop space of Lai Lai Kitchen in Jurong Point selling prawn noodles. In fact, tenants of Jurong Point changed a lot ever since I have not been visiting the mall for a long time.

Shop of King of Prawn Noodles

The menu was rather interesting as it was named after the Royal Hierarchy, namely with King, Queen, Prince and Queen. It was rather confusing to me as a first-time patron. The environment was a semi-industrial theme with corrugated zinc sheets as part of the decorations. The walls were drawn with murals illustrating the olden days.

Wall Murals

The prince of a bowl of Kway Teow and Yellow Noodle Dry Prawn Noodles was quite expensive. Prawns were half with some blanched pork ribs, fish cakes and bean sprouts as ingredients. The chilli and sauce mixing the noodles were spicy. The soup on the other hand had a good flavour though.

What turned us off was the pork lards that was supposed to elevate the taste of our food has a plastic taste.

A2 Prince (Dry) - $8.50

For the Queen's order, the prawns are slightly bigger than the Prince's and I have ordered Yellow Noodles with Kway Teow in Soup. Ingredients such as fish cakes and lean meat were part of the dish. Toppings like fried onions were used to elevate the taste. Likewise, the pork lards had a weird taste.

A3 Queen (Soup) - $11.80

It will be our first and last visit to this stall. Service was rather slow and for Prawn Noodles, there are many better ones out there which is worth the price paid.

Suzuki Cafe and Roastery

The setup of Suzuki Cafe and Roastery in the industrial estate is unique on its own in Singapore and this made me recall my last visit to Johor where a similar setup is observed.

It was a rainy day and upon reaching the guardhouse, we were told to park at the opposite open spaces public carpark.

While the Cafe has been known to us recently, most of us might not realize that Suzuki coffee has been around for decades since the 1970s.

The entrance to the building is has given us a welcoming feeling and the style with half curtains over the door reminds me of some Japanese Restaurant.

Over to the left of the entrance, the compound was huge and some coffee related murals were drawn on the wall.

As we entered the 1st Level of the cafe, we can see an array of coffee machines as well as a push cart displaying machine and coffee beans.

While midway at the stairsway, you get to see this display on their wall.

Upon reaching the 2nd level of the factory, we realised that the theme was some kind of Japanese inspired and we felt the Zen atmosphere as we walk into the Cafe.

Japanese Themed

Just near to the entrance of the café, there is one corner with this bamboo watering device fountain. Its a therapeutic way seeing the hollow bamboo brunch gets fills up with water and then topple when its reaches its threshold.

You can grab the coffee beans from the rack. There are a number of selections.

The beans

Make your orders over at the counter. They are mainly serving beverages and there are no cooked food.

Over the Counter

The seats by the side of the windows looking into the factory was my favorite.

The Anmitsu Latte only comes in a cold version and whipped cream is optional. The matcha taste was light and decent with the use of Hokkaido Milk. They also offer Japanese Soy milk as an alternative with at additional charges. Every drink ordered comes with a piece of Lotus Biscoff speculoos cookie.

Going for the lighter roast coffee. Kenya AA Asali is a unique flavour. This filtered coffee is different from what we can get outside. The coffee is fruity and fragrant with blackcurrants, plums, red apple and a notable floral taste.

The vibes of the cafe are pleasant and the environment is relaxing. If you want to feel like you are overseas or away from the bustling cafes in malls, you may want to visit Suzuki Cafe & Roastery for a different experience.

HJH fatimah Corner

We came to know of this stall when social media start posting about their food on Mee Rebus. I went down one of the weekends mornings and was surprised by the long queue. The stall was located in one corner of the coffee shop facing the hawker centre and open car park.

Payment can be done through self-payment by this machine, coins and notes.

Let's try the Mee Rebus recommended by the netizens. Perhaps we have high expectation and the plate of Mee Rebus was just a common one for us. Nothing much to comment about and perhaps why there was not much people ordering Mee Rebus too. Most of the common dishes ordered will be their Nasi Lemak, Lontong and Mee Goreng.

Mee Rebus

We ordered some finger food like chicken wings and fish fillet. The taste was ordinary when we thought that the chicken wings that would be tasty in its marination.

Finger Food

Overall, food from fatimah corner was pretty common, nothing much to rave about.

Heng Huat Boon Lay Boneless Duck Noodles

Those residing in the West could have probably heard of this popular Boneless Duck Noodles in Boon Lay Village Hawker Centre. Although I have known of its existence over the years, I could not remember that I have ever tasted their duck noodles. Most of the time, they were already sold out when I was there. Thus during the last round, we took much effort and arrive the place around 7am. That was not really early as queues were already formed up on such early Sunday Morning.

Boneless Duck Noodles Stall
For the soup version, we all like about it herbal soup taste that brings up the bowl of noodles besides their generous ingredients.

Duck Noodles in Soup - $3.50 (Small)
I would say this is a value for money portion with owner not only generous with its serving of crunchy bean sprouts on the noodle but also the amount of noodle and duck meat. The braised sauce in the bowl is not starchy and in fact the experience of having the duck noodles were pretty delightful.

Duck Noodles Dry (Small) with Braised Pork - $4.50
The duck meat is known for its succulency and does not bring along any gamey taste. I had tuck the handful of beansprouts aside to reveal the chewy and soft duck meat with some braised meat add on at additional cost.

Duck Noodles Dry with Braised Pork - $4.50
The braised meat is also another worthy item to comment on. It has the kind of traditional braised taste and each layer of the belly meat was so distinctive. Best of all, it was not oily.

Adding on Braised Meat
So its popularity speaks truly based on the taste and experience I had from the bowl of Boneless Duck Noodles.

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak

"Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak", say this to any Westie and I bet she is no stranger. The stalls operate during night time daily to after midnight and even if hunger pangs in the night, be sure that you get to enjoy plate or packet of fragrant Nasi Lemak. The stall is easy to spot as they are located at corner end of the row and usually with long queue lining up - its hard to be missed.

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak
Rice are as fragrant and you can select your choice of ingredient if you do not want to take up their assigned set with standard ingredient. I had my usual items like bagedil, sunny side up egg, Otah and chicken wing.

Yummy Chicken Wing
Fried Chicken wing still as good! Its golden brown perfection color and crispiness is good enough! And I bet you can't leave the place without having one of them on your plate.

Fried Chicken Wing
For those who have tried before, many would have commented that the standard had dropped. I would not deny that as it used to be very good but right now, its still above the average standard and the better ones in the west. However, be patient as you might need to join the long snaky queue at night!
