Eat 3 Bowls 呷三碗

What an odd business name I thought! However, when it comes direct translated from Hokkien "Jiak Sa Wa", we come to realize the name's beauty. It literally means having 3 bowls. This Taiwanese Classroom themed cafe has been in my To-Do List for quite sometimes and when it comes to Taiwanese staple dishes like Lu Rou Fan (Braised Meat Rice) & Mee Sua (Rice Vermicelli), I get turned on.

It has a theme of the classroom with writing desk and if you noticed some of the chairs have the old school student sling bag on it.

The menu is pretty interesting as in comes in a A5 size English School Exercise book in chinese wordings on its cover.

A5 Size
I wanted to order everything on its menu and guess it would be best to order their Signature Eat 3 Bowls Set where it comes with mini size Braised Pork Rice, Chicken Rice, Big Intestine Mee Sua and choice of any drink on the menu. At least, we get to taste a bit of its variety.

Mini Size - $15 Per Set
For drinks, we had Grass Jelly Milk Tea as a choice for the set. If order separately, it would cost $3.80. We also had Taiwan Bubble Tea Latte that comes in 3 different Tea Choices, Black Tea, Green Tea and Oolong Tea. In the end I went for the Oolong Tea Latte separately at $3.80. Both drinks were tasty and comes with chewy pearls. I also love that the glass jelly is smooth and silky. Besides that, reusable straws were used.

Yum! The Braised Pork Rice had a good old familiar taste, resembling one that I had in Taiwan months back. As authentic as it gets, there was a good balance of both fats and meat that literally melts in our mouth. And oh yes, I'm kind of addicted by its savoury, not-so-oily gravy and pairing them with the bowl of fragrant short grain rice.

Braised Pork Rice (Part of the Mini Size Set)
I could not recall if I have chicken rice in Taiwan but it did have a special taste. The shredded poached chicken tasted special to me and was not our usual kind of Singapore's chicken rice.

Chicken Rice (Part of the Mini Size Set)
Rice Vermicelli's taste was a reminiscent of Taiwanese food culture. Ingredients did not differ from the ones we used to have, big intestine, oysters, topping the Mee Sua up with vinegar and garlic. A little disappointment with this as it was served not hot at all. Otherwise, it would be perfect.

Intestine Mee Sua (Part of the Mini Size Set)

Intestine Mee Sua - $6.50
This is the Taiwanese version of our Singaporean's Bak Kut Teh in its black herbal form. It tasted on the bitter side even though wolf berries were added. We got 2 pieces of ribs from the soup.

Herbal Pork Ribs Soup
Beef Noodle set comes with a century egg tofu as side dish. Noodles were topped with 3 big tender pieces of braised beef soaked in the herbal broth together with noodles and vegetables. It tasted on the salty side for me and broth reminded me of the Taiwanese Instant Noodle.

Overall I'm glad that food here are way better than what we have from the Shilin Night Market in Singapore this year. With such quality Taiwanese taste food around, we need not need to travel all the way to Taiwan for her food.

Nan Hwa Chong Fish-Head Steamboat Corner

Our list of Fish Steamboat places are limited till we explored another place here in North Bridge Road. Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat Corner adopt the use of charcoal instead of the ususal gas can operated steamboat pot. It is said that the use of charcoal to fire up the broth gave a smoky flavour and an even heat distribution to the broth itself.

Look at the crowd
Location is rather prominent as it is located at the traffic junction. However, one thing that one might be worrying if driving would be the parking spaces.

At the Junction
Not long after we settled down, we notice the constant stream of patrons walking into the shop. Everyone who walks in were promptly attended by the server. Most who came in had already made reservation via phone call before hand and they were directed to the air conditioned corner of Nan Hwa Chong.

Seeing this station as the toughest job of all standing in front of the flames ensuring that the charcoal are evenly burn and stuffing them into the every steamboat that comes out from the kitchen.

Charcoal Station
Supposed to be their recommended egg dish, however we got it served with the middle part burnt. Nevertheless the texture still remains fluffy and taste ordinary with a handful of oysters.

Oyster Egg
The plate of stirred fried broccoli is my kind of home cook dishes. The light taste of broccoli greens is cooked with carrots, ginger and button mushrooms with minced garlic.
Stirred Fried Broccoli
We had chosen the grouper fishboat. The grouper fish comes from the sea-bass family. It is low in fat and cholesterol with firm texture and mild flavour. A healthy choice that does not compromise in taste. Three other types of fish offered will be Pomfret, Song Fish Head and Snapper Fish.

Grouper Fish Medium Pot - $35
Ingredients include fish, vegetables, seaweed, fried taro, flat fish, white cabbage and grouper fish. Soup is rich and sweet.

Top View
While the cloudy soup may be made up by the yam, unlike other places they were done by adding milk to it. If you are wondering about the familiar taste in the stock, its the generous portions of flat fish added to the soup that gave a different taste to it.

Flat Fish
Not only that the fried yam added had also elevated the soup taste.

Individual Bowl
Simply love dabbing the fish meat into this sweet sour and spicy chilli.

Chilli Sauce
If you love traditional fish steamboat with charcoal, Nan Hwa Chong Fish-Head is a very good choice. Not only that, they do have a variety of Cze Char Dishes in the menu for selection too.

Zhen Hao Lu Mian 珍好卤面

Zhen Hao Lu Mian is located at North Bridge Road Market and Food Centre, which is also a stone throw away from the local ICA (Immigration & Checkpoints Authority of Singapore) Building. Examining the crowd in the hawker centre and I came to a conclusion that I should try out this Lor Mee Stall as the queue was relatively long.

Stall of Zhen Hao Ru Mian
The Lor Mee gravy was thick but not overly starchy kind. Ingredients include Ngoh Hiong (5 spice roll), well braised pork belly and chunks of fried fishes. Garnishing like Chilli, garlic and spring onions were added too.

Traditional Lor Mee - $4
Aside from having the traditional Lor Mee on their menu, Zhen Hao is also offering a few dishes like Cod Fish Lor Mee, Treasures of Lor Mee and Chicken Chop Hor Fun.

Lor Mee
It may not be one of the best Lor Mee in Singapore but definitely something above average. If you are nearby Lavender MRT Station, you can have a try of Zhen Hao Lu Mian too.

Chia Bee Lor Mee

Looking randomly for a quick breakfast fix after my errands at ICA Building and got to know one of the popular Lor Mee around the area.

Chia Bee Lor Mee was housed in a coffee shop among the old estate and if you were to look left and right, you will only get to see those old folks enjoying their meal and chats with their friends on a lovely Saturday morning.

Chia Bee Lor Mee
Presentation of Lor Mee was typical with standard ingredients like fish cake, fried fish, bean sprouts, chinese parsley ladled with the starchy brown gravy aka "Lor Chap". The taste of the noodles and gravy was rather bland without adding chilli and garlic, and if you are looking for herbal taste, don't bother about it.  Fish cakes were relatively small but the portion as a whole is more than what you can get at $3 outside.

Lor Mee - $3 with Chilli
Even though that bowl of Lor Mee maybe standard rated, one good point to note will be their fried fish that deserved to be complimented. Fish was battered and deep fried to golden perfection. You can really tell that the fish was fresh and stands out most.

Antoinette

Tucked away from the bustling city and among the industrial area, Antoinette is one of the outstanding places which sells french pastries among all.

Antoinette
Antoinette @ 30 Perhas Road
Painted with faint blue color, Antoinette facade had given us a classy outlook  which reminds someone to pamper oneself especially over the weekend. Let's go

Facade

As we swang opened the door, sweet little treats with attractive looking packaging were all lined up neatly on the shelves waiting to be picked home.

To the left of the cafe, there were a number of photo frames glued to the wall with different colors without any picture within.

Everything could be ordered to their menu except for its pastries.

Just in front of the cashier counters, customer can choose to have macaroons over the cakes. Customers were all pampered by the range of variety and colors to choose from.

Macarons
Not only that, delicate cakes were all displayed on the chiller, Just walk over to them and have your pick. Each type of cake comes with a tagging, indicating its made.

The interior of Antoinette was very cosy with dainty victorian details, a very french theme with chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Its comfy plush cushioned chairs as well as those rattan made ones were good enough to make one spend additional time there chit chatting. Moreover the space between diners were great, allowing rooms for accessing and "spaces" to talk among ourselves.

Dining in Antoinette

Strawberry cake was amazing. The sponge cake was moist that literally melts with a little press from the tongue. The layer of fresh cream was light with ample of tasty strawberries. Overall, I find that the shortcake was delectable, giving off sweet strawberries scent. If you were to ask me to eat another 3 of it, I would be most happy to do so.

Strawberry Shortcake
Strawberry Shortcake - $9.00

This cake is strongly advocate by our local TV program and is true to namesake. Super love this! A MUST Try and do make sure you had them before leaving.

In case you are wondering, what is the red stuff on its top, its actually a raspberry coulis that you can burst to get raspberry sauce all over your cake. The thought of  its lusciousness and lightness of Earl Grey chocolate mousse base over the thick raspberry sauce oozing out with its crispy bits of chocolate (reminds me of Ferrero Roche) excites me.

Antoinette - $10.00

Look at the video for burst of raspberry. Oohed!

The pot of Charming Medows was rather normal, nothing to shout about.

Organic Charming Meadows - $8.50

This place is very good for chit chats but may be a little pricy. But for this kind of ambiance and the delicate pastries, I find it worthwhile to pay a visit once in a while. However do ensure that you make reservations at least a week before to avoid disappointment.
