Penang Savour

Craving for Penang Food? Let's visit Penang Savour which serves a good spread of yummy Penang Dishes.

Penang Savour

This Penang prawn noodle looks rich and hearty, the broth carrying a deep orange hue, promising that signature umami sweetness from prawn shells. Generous toppings of fresh prawns, pork slices, crunchy beansprouts, and greens make it hearty, while the spoonful of sambal on the side adds that fiery kick to lift the flavors even further. A soul-warming bowl that balances savory, spicy, and slightly sweet notes.

Penang Prawn Noodle - $5.90

Penang Laksa is truly in a league of its own compared to our local version. Tangy with pineapple, refreshing with mint leaves, and made even heartier with fresh mackerel fish, every spoonful is appetising and full of culture.

Penang Laksa 槟城叻沙 - $7.30

I still prefer Penang’s Char Kway Teow for the indulgent duck egg, but this plate came okay too, executed well with bold, smoky flavors that hit the spot.

The Crispy Hor Fun in Egg Gravy is a comforting dish where deep-fried noodles meet silky egg gravy. Part of the hor fun stays crunchy while the rest softens, soaking up the savory sauce. Paired with fresh prawns, tender pork, and crisp greens, every bite offers a satisfying mix of textures and flavors.

The drinks menu was just as refreshing, offering unique tropical blends. The Buah Long Long & Soursop Juice stood out with its tangy-sweet balance, instantly cooling and revitalizing. The Honey Kumquat Juice delivered a sweet yet zesty punch, both refreshing and smooth. For something more textured, the Chia Seed Lychee Rose combined floral notes with juicy lychee and the crunch of chia seeds, making it both delightful and nourishing.

Penang Homemade Soursop & Buah Long Long 沙梨红毛榴莲,  Chia Seeds Lychee Rose 荔枝奇亚籽, Honey Kumquat Juice 金桔蜜 - $6.50, $6, $4.20

The Hong Kong Choy Sam with Abalone Slices was a comforting dish that felt like home-cooked goodness. Lightly stir-fried with hints of garlic, it brought out the natural sweetness of the abalone slices, while the addition of goji berries added a subtle touch of sweetness and nourishment.

Chulia Street Hawker Food in Penang

Penang's vibrant street food scene is a must-experience, especially when staying near a bustling night market. Watching stall peddlers set up their carts, preparing for the evening crowd, adds to the charm of enjoying local delicacies fresh off the grill or wok.

Char Koay Teow Stall

Our street food dinner kicked off on a high note with a plate of satisfying Char Koay Teow, a beloved local delicacy known for its smoky wok hei and flavorful stir-fry. As we approached the stall, the enticing aroma of sizzling noodles and fragrant garlic filled the air, making our anticipation grow even stronger.

One thing that stood out was the option to choose between duck or chicken egg—a choice that isn't commonly available in Singapore. Without hesitation, I went for the duck egg, as it adds a richer, creamier texture to the dish, elevating its overall depth of flavor.

The ingredients looked simple yet well-executed, consisting of fresh bean sprouts, egg, juicy cockles, and prawns, all stir-fried to perfection over high heat. The combination of the soft yet slightly chewy flat rice noodles, the crunch of the bean sprouts, and the umami flavors from the seafood made every bite incredibly enjoyable.

The dish was served on a piece of banana leaf atop a paper plate, adding a touch of authenticity to the experience. Each mouthful carried that distinct wok hei, a hallmark of a well-cooked Char Koay Teow, making it a truly satisfying start to our street food feast.

Char Koay Teow - RM 9

The moment we settled at the aluminum sheet table, hawkers swiftly approached us, offering drinks and rojak. Without hesitation, we ordered both, ready to dive into the local flavors.

Stall

Penang's rojak is a must-try, with its distinct prawn paste flavor that sets it apart from Singapore’s version. True to its name, it’s a mix of cut fruits generously tossed in the savory paste and finished with a sprinkle of crunchy peanut bits.

We were on the lookout for oysters and finally spotted a stall at the corner, right in front of the Lebuh Carnarvon road sign. The chef from Granny's Oyster Omelette was busy cooking and preparing dishes for his orders, creating a buzz of activity around him.

Stall of Granny's Oyster Omelette

When it came to the oysters, we knew right away that this was something we wouldn’t be able to find in Singapore, not in such a generous portion. The dish was packed with plump, juicy oysters, far more than what we’re used to seeing back home. Each bite was bursting with the fresh, briny sweetness of the sea, complementing the dish perfectly. It was a delightful indulgence, making us appreciate the difference in portion sizes and generosity in street food across the border.

Oyster Omelette - RM 20

The egg was fried to perfection, with a crispy, golden-brown exterior that contrasted beautifully against the soft, fluffy interior. Every bite delivered an addictive crunch, followed by the richness of the egg and the briny sweetness of the oysters. The combination was simply irresistible.

Adding to the experience, the coriander garnish brought a refreshing balance to the dish, enhancing its overall aroma. With each chopstick pick, we got a delightful mix of textures: crispy, fluffy, and juicy all in one. This was oyster omelette done right, and we savored every last bite!

Oysters

Despite our stomachs nearing their limit, we couldn’t resist visiting the highly raved stall, even though it was located at the far end of the street we started from. The long queue had us hesitating at first, but in the end, we decided to order a small plate to try it for ourselves.

Stall of Wanton Mee

Although the queue seemed intimidating at first, we weren’t discouraged, as it moved surprisingly fast.

Uncle preparing

My eyes practically "blinked" with delight after the first mouthful! It was so good that we were glad we made the decision to try it, though we couldn’t help but regret not ordering a bigger portion! Ha ha ha!

The dish absolutely lives up to the hype! The noodles were cooked to perfection, springing with that perfect bite that makes every twirl of the chopsticks so satisfying. The seasoning sauce? That's the star of the show, it's the magic that ties everything together, infusing every bite with a fragrant richness from the pork lard.

Wanton Mee - RM 6.50

Thin slices of Char Siew melt in your mouth, while the dumplings, perfectly shaped like little pillows of joy, just add that extra level of delight. And those veggies tucked by the side? They balanced out all the rich flavors. A truly mouthwatering experience!

Penang Signature

Penang Signature is located in Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre. In fact you can smell the distinctive flavour of Assam Laksa from far. Amazingly, there is only one item available for sale from their stall and that is none other than their signature Penang Assam Laksa that cost $3.50 per bowl.

Penang Signature Stall
Ingredients are generous and you can see the big chunks of fishes in the disposable bowl used with vegetables, tamarind slices, cucumber, onions, pineapple cubes and vegetables. The sweet sour and spicy taste are indeed very appetizing.

Assam Laksa - $3.50
The noodles itself are chewy and immersed in the tangy Assam Gravy, i bet you cant find anything closer here in Bukit Timah than to what you have in Penang. Well, its really addictive.

Island Penang

Island Penang which is located at Sago Street next to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum had moved into the West. Situated in front of the big openspace car park right beside West Coast Community Centre, its quite convenient for diners who drive too.

Island Penang Kitchen
Orders can be make manually by indicating on the slip of paper or can be made via the helpful assistants around.

Ordering
Interior was spacious with good walking spaces in between tables. Renovations with foreceiling lights and L-Box had made the place well lited. Adding on to the penang atmosphere will be the articles of buildings and decors from Penang Streets.

Interior
What are the staples of Penang Cuisine? The most common dishes that I would order is perhaps their Asam Laksa as well as their Char Kway Teow. Let's check out individual dishes taste.

Our Mains
Prawn Noodle was soup based but did not have any umami taste. Pork, lean meat, prawns and kungkang were thrown in, making up a usual bowl of prawn noodle that you can probably get from the hawkers.

Prawn Noodle - $5
Assam Laksa had rock my socks off. Appetizing with generous chunks of fish meat and smell was potent. Noodle used here was thicker and plum, lavished with shredded lettuce on top of the dish. Spicy level was bearable and Assam gravy was a total addiction which made me enjoy every mouthful of it.

Assam Laksa - $5
Tom Yam Noodle came with a couple of seafood and mushrooms. Taste was a bit bland in my opinion and can be improved by adding more spices.

Tom Yam Noodle - $6
Thin width Kway Teow over the wok were packed of smoky flavours in their dish. It was not too bad either, better than average and not too oily. Amount of chinese sausages were considered generous with spring onions, eggs as well as beansprouts making part of the dish.

Penang Fried Kway Teow - $6
Cuttlefish Kangkung was lacking of the usual taste which I most expected. Nevertheless, amount of kangkung was generously given, likewise for the cuttlefish with handful of chopped peanuts covering up the dish.

Cuttlefish Kangkung - $6

Let's Mix

Last but not least, one of us had ordered a cup of ice Bandung and was pretty satisfied with its taste.

Ice Bundung - $2
With Penang Tourism being so popular among my clicks and friends, Penang Food over here is up in trend. Even though it had moved from Central where crowd is, Island Penang is reputable and had made enough marketing efforts to gain its awareness among consumers, thus the full house seen. With so many offices around the estate, the lunch crowd is always there, also there are outdoors seating too.

Penang Culture

Penang Culture Restaurant, sister company of Gurney Drive, offers a range of tantalizing Penang hawker food freshly prepared by their reowned chef who lived half of their life there.

Soursop Ice Blended - $5.95

Crispy-thin homemade beancurd sheets were rolled up, wrapping the marinated chicken. The dish was served with their homemade sweet sauce and chilli sauce.

Penang Chicken Roll -  $4.95

Cross Section of Penang Chicken Roll

Chewy cuttlefish paired with crunchy kangkong, topped with sweet peanut sauce.

Penang Cuttlefish Kangkong - $5.65

The soup consists of chicken meat balls, fish balls as well as Fu Zhou Fish Balls with glass noodles int their light and tasty soup. However do note that the glass noodles is of a little serving.

Penang Specialty Soup - $6.65

The stir-fried glass noodle was rather ordinary, with prawns, squid and egg. It was stated as spicy on its menu and being one of the healthier choice options.

Fried Glass Noodle - $7.65
Overall, the place was quite decent and food was on the average side, lacking the punch of its cuisine somehow. One point to note that plain water costs 30 cents a cup and it's non-refillable. Payment process is different from the rest of the restaurant and has to be made at ordering counter immediately after placing your orders.

Last but not least, Penang Culture is Halal Certified, suitable for our Muslims pals.

Simei Penang Laksa Speciality

Craving for Penang delights? If you are residing or passing by in the west, perhaps you may want to head down to Yuhua Market and Hawker Centre.

Simei Penang Laksa Speciality
Articles pasted over the stalls shown that they have received a number of interviews from the press and even got feature in the local celebrity food hunt, Mediacorp's Channel 8 Program.

From the Media Press
In promoting healthier lifestyle with through the exercise with Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB), they had their dish indicated with the amount of calories. For Penang Char Kway Teow, it consists of 500 kcal and whole grain noodles are used.

Comparing Penang's to Singapore Char Kway Teow, the significant difference is its color - a whiter version whereas Singapore's style of Char Kway Teow was coated with dark soy sauce and comes with cockles and Chinese sausage as part of its main ingredients.

The charred taste was not that much but the plate of Penang delicacies is definitely close to an authentic one with pork lard used and the correct moisture in it. Prawns, spring onions and beansprouts also make up part of the ingredients.

Penang Char Kway Teow - $3.50
Given a choice, I will prefer another dish from their stall which is none other than their Penang Laksa. Likewise, whole grain noodles were used here and this dish consist of  290 kcal - another healthier choice for the patrons.

It has a heady scent of prawn paste and the refreshing aroma taste from the mint leaves. Together with the soury taste of assam and generous serving of minced fish meat, Im sold.

Penang Laksa - $3 ( Small)
Shredded vegetables were added and although the gravy may looks red hot spicy, the level of spice is little or close to none to me.

Revealing its noodles
A wait up to 10 minutes is inevitable during meal hours especially when Simei Penang Laksa Speciaility is one of the popular stalls among others in the Hawker Centre.

Overall, Penang Cuisine is not very common in most Hawker Centre and I would say that the standards are pretty good.

Penang Asam Laksa

It's not common we get to see Penang Cuisine in Singapore's Hawker Centre and what's more at an affordable rate which cost almost the same as a basic plate of chicken rice.

Specialising in Penang Cuisine, Jason has a variations to offer. His menu is different from Monday to Friday while some dishes like Penang Char Kway Teow and Assam Laksa are available daily.

I had a bowl of Assam Laksa over dinner and it was appetizing. It was sour and spicy enough throughout. An assortment of ingredients were added which includes pineapple cubes, fish, Heh Gor (Prawn Paste).

Assam Laksa - $3
For budget and common Penang dishes, Jason Penang Cuisine is definitely worth your tastebuds.
