Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam

Visiting the #1 Nasi Ayam Goreng spot in town at Holland came with its own little adventure. After battling the lunch crowd just for a parking lot, I was greeted by a longer queue at Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam. Honestly, I felt like I was living up to the name, grumpy before I even got to try the food!

Mr Grumpy

With the ticking clock of my lunch break, my heartbeat quickened with every passing minute in line. After a half-hour wait, I finally got my hands on the much-anticipated plate from Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam.

I went all in, with crispy ayam goreng, bagedil, hotdogs, and quail eggs, all served with a comforting bowl of chicken soup that instantly reminded me of Mee Soto.

Nasi Ayam Goreng

The fried chicken was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and truly impressive. The rice was fluffy and aromatic, pairing perfectly with the juicy chicken. As for the chilli, it leaned towards the sweeter side, just the way I like it, flavourful without overpowering the dish.

The delicious Ayam Goreng

Was it worth the thrill? If you ask me, I’d nod without hesitation. I wouldn’t mind queuing up all over again.

Sunday Folks

Whenever we were in the vicinity and thinking of Ice Cream for our after meals, Sunday Folks will come to our mind straight away.

Dark Chocolate Ferrero was rich and had a velvety texture. It contains nuts and is made up of hazelnuts as well as 55% of Chocolate Couverture. Toppings include ground hazelnuts, caramel marshmallows and homemade chocolate sauce. Yummy!

If you prefer the Dark Chocolate Ferrero without Waffle, you may want to order this in a cup. It is a scaled-down version with nuts and marshmallows.

Another all-time favourite of ours will be their Sea Salt Gula Melaka. It does not contain egg and this Gula Melaka was produced together with Hand-harvested sea salt. Glat that it was not too salty. The toppings on the waffle include Gula Melaka Mochi, Chocolate Mikado Sticks and Gula Melaka Sauce.

For those who love the taste of Tea and Lavender, you may want to order their Earl Grey Lavender that is topped with Toasted Almond Thins and fresh strawberries. The Almond Thins had added a delicious caramel brittle crunch to the soft serve. Do note that this contains eggs.

Have you tried having Cold Brewed Coffee with tonic water? This taste pretty refreshing with some Lime and Tonic Water.

The Yuzu Mousse cake was layered with sweet lychee cream, matcha sponge and yuzu zest. It was decorated with blueberries, lemon slices and herbs. It strikes a good balance with the refreshing notes of yuzu and the sweet fruity fragrance of lychee. While the subtle bitterness of matcha lends a good contrast to the rest of the flavours.

With so many Ice Cream cafe around us daily, we will not forget the quality of Ice Cream provided by Sunday Folks.

Published on 21 July 2015

Sunday Folks is by the same owner of Creamier in Toa Payoh Lorong 1. It is a beautifully designed place situated in Chip Bee Garden, serving special flavoured ice cream, aromatic delicious waffles, coffee and tea.

Sunday Folks

The Interior is L-Shaped, simply designed with wooden furnishings, hanging track lights and cemented flooring,  a resemblance of semi-industrial concept.

And as you flipped to the back of its menu, it mentioned that Not all those who wanders are lost.

Menu
This portion of Sunday Folks is rather interesting as we took our own drinking water. Water was taken from the golden tap with a sparrow as its knob.

drinking Tap
Ta-da, here's the unlimited serving of our drinking water.

Complimentary Plain Water
These Belgian Waffles were freshly baked upon order and requires at least 15 minutes of waiting time. Paired with fruits like strawberries, blueberries and drizzled with maple syrup as well as chocolate hazelnut sauce.

Waffles with Ice Cream - $11.80 (Double Slice)

Out of the 6 flavours available (Summer Strawberries / Roasted Pistachio / Earl Grey Lavender / Madagascan Vanilla / Sea Salt Gula Melaka & Dark Chocolate), I had the Sea Salt Gula Melaka. The soft serve ice cream is creamy and smooth without having an overpowering taste of Gula Melaka. However, if you have it together with the waffle, the sweetness of the waffle will somehow supersede the light flavours from the ice cream. However, I must highlight that the Belgian Waffles were good.

Since it is located on the quieter side of Holland Village, it will be an ideal place for gathering and catching up with friends.

Hock Soon Carrot Cake

Back here in Ghim Moh Road Market and Food Centre. While the last round I had the White Version of the Carrot Cake, this time round I had the black version.  Savoury version with sauce well covered on the pieces of the soft and tasty carrot cake. The taste of the carrot cake was to my liking with sweetness from both the egg and sauce,  however, I find that the pieces of carrot cake was too small, thus there was some difficulties in scooping them up with the use of small disposable plastic fork.

Carrot Cake (Black) - $3 (Small)

Posted on 7th October 2022

The last visit to this stall was back in 2014 when Hock Soon Carrot Cake was located in a different unit. With a recent visit to the Hawker Centre, I was introduced to their version of White Carrot Cake. While I remembered I only had the black versions before, I could not wait to give the white version a try after all he insisted that it was good. After looking around where patrons are mostly getting the black versions, I still give the white version a shot.

Stall of Hock Soon Carrot Cake

It seems like the ones taking over the wok are of a younger generation and the signboard design had changed even though there are still 4 items on their menu.

The fair young lady skillfully clears the orders in a breeze and I manage to get my order in no time. The carrot cake is made up of small pieces with eggs and preserved vegetables aka "Cai Poh".

Carrot Cake (White) - $4 (Medium)

It has a light fragrance with chilli giving my breakfast the slightest kick.

Do You Love White Carrot Cake?

While the guy that swears on this version of White Carrot Cake from Hock Soon is simply the best, I beg to differ. For white carrot cakes, I still prefer them to be served in blocks and not as charred but packed with sweet egg flavours.

Lao Chao Zhou 老潮州

Lao Chao Zhou literally means Old Teochew when translated. This stall is popular in Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre for their Mee Siam as well as Satay Bee Hoon.

Lao Chao Zhou 老潮州

Mee Siam is priced at $3.50 per plate and ingredients comprised of bean sprouts, Tau Pok, egg, chives and fried tiny shrimp. The stall will also assist in squeezing in the lime juice before serving.

Mee Siam - $3.50

The sweet spicy gravy has a creamy and nutty taste, and the sour notes from the tamarind blended in well with the spicy chilli. Definitely appetizing! The fragrance and nuttiness were simply worthy of. The tiny shrimps are the star on the plate! They were crispy and added an umami flavour to the broth.

Mee Siam

Many swore that this is the best Chinese Mee Siam they ever had, what do you think?

Hai Nan Hometown Curry

As we walked past the last stall of the row of hawker stalls, this curry rice stall caught our attention.

Hai Nan Hometown Curry
Hai Nan Hometown Curry

Items like Pork Chop, Chicken Cutlet, Tempura Prawns and Fish Fillet were all fried upon order, this give the diners an assurance that its fresh to eat and for me, I always like to have my food hot upon serving.

The Pork Chop was breaded and fragrant. Meat thickness and the cuts were uniform. The Curry Pork Chop Rice came with some softened potato chunks too. Curry gravy on the other hand was on the starchy side and was disappointing without having the curry spice/lemon grass fragrance that we are looking for.

We took up Value Set A which is the Chicken Wing Set. We were given drumlets, curry vegetables, boiled potatoes and half a hard-boiled egg with a generous amount of curry.

Value Set A - Chicken Wing Set 鸡翅膀套餐
Value Set A - Chicken Wing Set 鸡翅膀套餐 - $4

With a purchase of Main dishes, we get to enjoy the side dishes at an additional price. The Curry Vegetables is a version of Sayur Lodeh which contains a lighter taste in curry.

The curry lacks the flavour and depth that we are looking for. Though it's consider decent eat, a return trip to the same stall is tough.

63 Laksa

While queueing up for the stall next door (Guan Kee Fried Kway Teow), we took notice of this laksa stall and decided to give it a try. The stall is absolutely clean and neat. The guy who manned the stall is friendly too.

63 Laksa Stall

While it's not common to have a bowl of food for less than 3 bucks in a Hawker Center nowadays, this bowl of Laksa actually did it by keeping the price low.

The laksa broth was coconutty with standard ingredients similar to the Sungei Road Laksa like fish cakes, bean sprouts, thick bee hoon and hum (cockles). The Laksa is suitable for those who cannot take spicy. On the contrary, if you love to have additional spiciness, you can ask for more dollops of sambal chilli.

Here's what to order

What's a bowl of Laksa without these fresh blood cockles? They are plum and juicy which is a plus point especially if you are a Hum Lover.

Laksa & Hum

No doubt the portion of the small bowl maybe too little for some, you can top up your bowl of laksa with Otah or even order additional bowls. The Otah is decent but a bit on the dry side. The spiciness level of Otah is acceptable too.

Teck Hin Delicacies

Walking into Ghim Moh Food Centre and there are many stalls with long queues and one of them was none other than Teck Hin Delicacies that provides the heartlanders with comfortable food for breakfast as well as snack time.

Teck Hin Delicacies
Even though with limited 4 items
1) Century Egg & Pork Congee
2) White Bait & Pork Congee
3) Chee Cheong Fun (2 Rolls)
4) Chee Cheong Fun (3 Rolls)

or in fact 3 kinds of food in the menu, these relatively simple food has gained popularity perhaps because of its pocket friendly pricing and comfy meal at about $2.

Century Egg & Pork Congee is very smooth just like what you have in dim sum restaurant. Amount of ingredients was quite alot. Not only that, pork was marinated and tender. Surprisingly the taste of century egg was better than what I had expected as ginger strips was used to reduce the preserved egg taste.

Centry Egg & Pork Congee - $1.80
Century Egg
Steamed Chee Cheong Fun was silky and smooth, coupled with sweet brown sauce and chilli sauce. Recommended!

Chee Cheong Fun - $1.80

It's kind of rare to see economical food around in Hawker Centre nowadays and it is really something simple, down to earth meal that you may want to look for in Ghim Moh!

Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh

A visit to Ghim Moh Food Centre is never complete without having such traditional old school Chwee Kueh too, besides other popular dishes like its roasted duck and carrot cake. Why are their Chwee Kueh famous? A close look observation into the stall would definitely give you more hints to the answers.

Unlike the typical Chwee Kueh stalls, the old couple wake up early daily in the morning to prepare from the scratch instead of getting them from the factory. I'm glad that we are still able to see how food are make with them keeping such a traditional rendition.

Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh
While most of the popular Chwee Kueh stalls uses vegetables oil for their "chye poh" (preserved raddish),  these from Ghim Moh had retained its traditional method, insisting on the use of pork lard.

Chwee Kueh - $1.40 for 4
As compared to others, Ghim moh's Chye Poh is saltier however, I really loves the Kueh that they took out of those scalding hot aluminium cups. They are wobbly and soft in texture.

Stacking
Though they are of the traditional taste, I still prefer the sweeter chye poh from bedok Chwee Kueh. Still, in conclusion, such traditional taste of Chwee Kueh is hard to come by, better appreciate its taste before its gone.

Lucky Poh Hong Kong Noodle & Rice

Lucky Poh Hong Kong Noodle and Rice is tucked at one corner of Ghim Moh food centre specializing in Hong Kong noodle and rice dishes like soy sauce chicken, wanton mee and shrimp dumplings.

Lucky Poh Hong Kong Noodle & Rice
Noodles was springy and cook to al dente perfection with soy sauce as the base for diners to mix the noodles together. Soy chicken noodles was topped with a few stalks of greens and accompanied by a bowl of soup. The soup gave another good first impression to their dish as it was filled with prawns favoring.

Soy Chicken Noodle - $3
The thick soy chicken was yummy and its meat was tender. No doubt that it comes in thick generous portion, they are succulent and packed with distinctive soy sauce. Its really worth what we are paying for!

Ngee Heng Kuay Chap

Looking for Kuay Chap for breakfast in Ghim Moh Hawker Centre? Spot it just beside the famous carrot cake stall.

Ngee Heng Kuay Chap
Ingredients are well braised, giving an assorted plate of food with preserved vegetables in the middle. The $4 portion was generous especially the portion on innards. Not only that they are well handled, leaving no signs of innards taste, completely.

Kuay Chap - $4

Sides can be ordered separately if you didnt get enough of them in the mains.

"Cai Buay" Preserved Vegetables
Kuay is handled by the lady helper in the stall, spending quite sometime in a corner, ensuring that every bowl is cooked to the ideal texture.

Lady preparing the "kuay"
The bowl was then added with the braised gravy from the pot then topped with fried onions to enhance its taste.

Kuay - $0.50
Being a true blue Singaporean, having Kuay Chap for meals is a normal and also their food falls within the acceptable taste, I wont mind returning back for another meal there.

Hock Soon Carrot Cake

I have heard of so many positive comment about the fried carrot cake in Ghim Moh but I have never gotten a chance in trying them until last Weekend when I was there by chance. The original Ghim Moh Food Centre is under renovation currently and all the hawker stalls have been shifted to a temporary site, located right next to the place.

Hock Soon Carrot Cake

Though there was already queue ahead of us, the waiting time was still within limits. I should say the plate of carrot cake is worth waiting for. The first mouthful rekindle the old memories in me, the not so sweet black carrot cake packed with fragrant at every bite had been me a flash back to my younger days. I love the cripsy texture and its charred egg bites in between those carrot cakes which were cut into rectangular cubes or even into pieces during frying.

Fried Carrot Cake - $3
With all said above, Hock Soon Carrot Cake really lives up to its reputable comment. A trip to Ghim Moh Hawker Cetnre wont be completed if you have not tried their carrot cake.
