Wen Li Taiwanese Food

After going through rounds in Golden Mile Food Centre, I almost give up as a lot of stalls that I wanted to patronise were lined up with snaky queues. As the hunger grew more intensive, I quickly settled down with my choice and ended up with Taiwanese food.

Wen Li Taiwanese Food is run by two young friendly guys and located at one corner of the Food Center.

Stall of Wen Li Taiwanese Food

They have 2 sets A and B where the meal will come with Popcorn chicken with Set A serving Braised Pork Rice aka Lu Rou Fan and Set B serving Mee Sua.

Braised Pork Rice comes in a good portion served with a whole soft-boiled egg, pickled cucumber and minced pork topping up the bowl of rice.

Set A - Braised Pork Rice with Popcorn Chicken

The bowl of Taiwanese pearl rice was laid over the yummy braised pork with spring onions. It was flavourful and perhaps more suiting our local taste than considered "authentic". The pop corn chicken was fried to order and was done up with salt and peppering seasoning before serving.

Another Taiwanese staple is the Mee Sua (Vermicelli). The bowl was served hot and was gooey enough with a good hint of bonito taste in its stock. The taste was decent nonetheless the praise-worthy part will be their pig intestine as they had done a good job without foul taste. If you prefer other versions, they have it with oysters too.

Mee Sua with Big Intestine

The set meal is value for money if you are looking for decent Taiwanese food from Hawker. To add on, the Hawkers are friendly too.

Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly

A visit back here to Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly after 9 years. It was after breakfast that I wanted some drinks and I recalled this stall that I had patronized the last round.

Stall of Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly

We ordered a cup of grass jelly drink and a bowl of Granny Grass Jelly There was a queue with a few pax ahead of us.

Grass Jelly Drink - $2

Whenever it comes to grass jelly as dessert, I will very much have Attap Seed as a topping among others like Nata De Coco, Longan or sea coconut. Love the cooling Grass Jelly topped with shaved ice and 6 pieces of Attap Seed.

Grass Jelly with Attap Seed - $2.50

The bitter grass jelly was a perfect match with the sweetened Attap Seed.  Grass Jelly was wobbly and smooth.

Grass Jelly

Having grass jelly as dessert is definitely a good choice if you are in Golden Mile Food Centre.

Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly

Do give Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly a try if you are looking for desserts in Golden Mile Food Centre. Famous for their grass jelly, it was said that they were produced based on special recipe handed down from their granny.

Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly

Grass Jelly and longans were served in a traditional white and blue porcelain bowl with metal spoon, topped with a handful of shaved ice which looked coarse but in fact, soft in texture.

Grass Jelly
Grass Jelly was wobbly and smooth with a tad bitterness in it to to the use of herbs in its ingredients. However the sugar syrup and the sweetness from the longan complements this bitterness well. Refreshing and soothing to the body!

Grass Jelly Longan - $2

Though they may be a little more expensive than the usual ones, I will still be back for more!

Shi De Fu Cooked Food

At a glance of its name, it caught my attention as it reminded me of the food heaven that we frequently patronized in Malaysia, Johor Bahru. Located at end of the row of the stalls, Shi De Fu had the privilege to show up more of their menu at the side of their stalls.

Shi De Fu Cooked Food
Noodles were lightly doused with light soy sauce and a few pieces of greens.

Dumpling Noodle - $3
Dumplings' taste was a let down, it was bland and the skin was rather thick. Moreover, there was no sight of chestnut found or even any crunch in it.

Dumpling
Though the characteristics of the meal wasn't too pleasing to me, it still make a very down to earth bowl of noodles that can fill one's stomach on any normal day.

Kheng Fatt Hainanese Beef Noodle

A few rounds in Golden Mile Food Centre had make me realized that there are a number of stalls selling Hainanese Cuisine - well, they are not just the common Hainanese Chicken Rice Stall we have seen but more of the rare ones.

I came across Kheng Fatt Hainanese Beef Noodles as I walked up the flight of stairs (main) and they were just located right beside at the 1st Level.

Kheng Fatt Hainanese Beef Noodle

Opted a dry version bowl of tasty and hearty Hainanese beef noodle to start with. Its flavoursome starchy gravy slathered with thick bee hoon is all heavenly and lip smackingly good. Beef slices were well cooked, maintaining its tenderness.

Beef Noodle with Meat Balls and Meat - $5

Try dipping the slices into their homemade chilli sauce added with the tangy taste from the squeeze of the lime. Perfect!

Dry Version of Beef Noodle
The grated peanuts had given an extra texture to the palates and some preserved vegetables had added a twist to its sweet tasty sauce.

Close up

Perhaps this is the best drier version of beef noodle I had in Singapore.

Tong Ji Mian Shi

Tong Ji Mian Shi is one of stalls that scores among the diners. With lots of articles on the media where reviews were made over the years pasted below its sign board, emphasizing its Lotus Lor Mee which is one of its kind. (So far, I have not seen any places with such concoction) .

Beside Lor Mee, they have other selections like Laksa and Fish Ball Soup / Noodle.

Tong Ji Mian Shi
Flat yellow noodles were served with fish cake, Ngor Hiang, braised lean meat, egg, dumplings and crispy bits. And its hard to go without a spoonful of black vinegar in a bowl of Lor Mee. Though gravy was rather blend without too much of braised taste, right amount of starch used were seen, giving a right texture and thickness.

Lor Mee with Fried Lotus - $4

Thinly sliced lotus included which marks a difference to a traditional bowl of Lor Mee. Crunchy and was fried to golden brown perfection, somehow reminding me of Chinese New year Snack.

Slice of Deep Fried Lotus
With so much of rave, I'm expecting more from that bowl. Overall, I still prefer the traditional ones with pork belly and better flavour in terms of its braised sauce.

Hainanese Chicken Rice & Curry Chicken Noodles 大坡

Walk deeper into Golden Mile Food Centre and reveal the hidden Gems that hidden at the corner.  With the number of glamorous moments with the stars and articles plastered all over the stall, it is unlikely that we will miss such exaggerations. To add on, their stall was featured in one of the local Television programs "Just Noodles (面对面)" where the best curry noodle was best advocated for.

大坡 Hainanese Chicken Rice & Curry Chicken Noodles

Bowl of curry noodle was flavourful and refreshing. Yellow noodles was softened and does not have the "ki" smell in it. The ingredient that stood out was its meaty pieces of white chicken which was cooked to perfection, succulent and tender, more than words can described. Fried pork skin was included as well, soft and chewy.  Potato was cooked to soften and literally disintegrate at the slightest pressure. Overall, the bowl of Hainanese Curry Chicken Noodle was very tantalizing to the palettes.

Hainanese Curry Chicken Noodle - $5

In conclusion, its undeniably the best curry chicken noodles i had had so far in Singapore and portion comes generous with big chunks of chicken. Most importantly of all, it's delicious!
