Soon Lee B.B.Q [Closed]

Having eyed this stall for almost half a year, they have finally opened in the afternoon. I was elated as this was one of the stalls I have yet to try. Nowadays, its getting trendy with youngster going into F&B Business especially in the Hawker Centre and I guess there is more reason for me to try out their food.

The usual school of thought is that having BBQ food is only the night thingy and I decided to pop my head into the stall and check out what are they serving since it was day time. A TV screen in front of the stall was showing the recommended set meal for the day and without further ado, I ordered them as it was the cheapest among the others.

Soon Lee B.B.Q
Though the portion of $5 maybe a tad expensive than the usual $2.50 - $3 meals we had for lunch I would say that its all worthwhile. Why? Besides having a bowl of rice scooped onto the green plate, sunny side up egg was included with nicely cut cucumbers and sides like ikan billis with peanuts. Portion of black pepper chicken was generously given.

Black Pepper Chicken Set - $5
The bite size chicken meat was tender and tasty, consistently coated with black peppery taste and strong hint of garlic smell. Yummy!

Delicious Black Pepper Chicken
If you are paying $6 for their Sotong Meal, don't dropped your jaws for their generousity.Sotong were fresh and "q", fried together in the addictive chilli paste filled with onions and garlic too.

Sotong Set - $6
With such portion, we joked among ourselves that we could actually save our lunch money by sharing the portion after all to consume such a big plate down could be a challenge at times especially when we have to fight against the Zzz Monster after lunch time.

Kui Ji

Kui Ji, one of the many hawkers that I would revisit for its food that suits my taste buds and of course it's value for money.

Kui Ji Owner in Action

I had ordered a plate of the traditional Chai Tao Kway (Carrot Cake), the black version. The portion was rather big, considering that its the smallest version available from the stall. I guess with the amount of carrot cake given, this would have cost us up to $4 in most of the food court, whereas in West Coast Food Centre, we get it at almost half the price.

Now that Quantity has passed my criteria, we will talk about its quality. I would say that it tastes not too bad and above average. In terms of hitting the kind of traditional taste with the Chai Po Fragrant, Kui Ji does have it. Portion was big with generous spread of eggs. Carrot Cake is available in Black, white or even mix version. For the mix version, it will cost us $3.

88 Chicken Rice

88 Chicken Rice has joined the hawkers crowd in West Coast market Square, marking the 4th stall that sells chicken rice in the Hawker and competition was stiff.

88 Chicken Rice
88 Chicken Rice Stall offers only roasted and boiled chicken with sides like oyster sauce vegetables and nothing else.

Chicken Rice Set - $3

The key attraction of what 88 chicken rice has offered to their customers is perhaps the generous amount of chicken meat on plate at a decent price of $3. Instead of smashing and flatten up  the chicken pieces and placed them on top of the fragrant rice, they have it put in a separate plate drenched with soy sauce. For those who are going for quantity, having 88 chicken rice just wont go wrong.

Hani Food Stall

With not much choice of Muslim Food Stall available in West Coast Market Square, I'm always the supporter of Hani Food Stall for its friendly service and of course its varieties of dishes.

Hani Food Stall
Chilli padi excluded from the bowl of Mee Soto as I'm not used to them. Soup is not oily but sweet tasting added with shredded chicken which makes a good marriage in the overall. I always pair my bowl of savoury Mee Soto with Begedil (Potato Pancakes) which costs me additional $0.50. A bigger diameter as compared to the usual ones in the market. I will always order the Mee Soto with begedil unless it runs out of stock!

If you want to avoid spiciness, do remind them not to put in the chilli padi.

Mee Soto - $2.50 + $0.50
Mee Rebus is served in a bowl with sweet peanut gravy, smooth and coats the noodles without being too thick  Their standard Malay culinary dishes are way too addictive and I cant wait to polish the bowl. Priced at the market rate, for those who like sweet and light version, you will  probably like Hani's dishes as well.

Li Wan Zhou Pin 荔湾粥品

Li Wan Zhou Pin has been opened last than one month ago in West Coast Market Square occupying a unit besides the Yong Tau Foo stall. Business has been going well ever since day one, perhaps they are the only porridge stall opened during lunch times.

Li Wan Zhou Pin
Every order was cooked on the spot except the porridge that had been already prepared. However when it comes to someone ordering the claypot dishes (e.g frog legs, livers), the queue will slow down suddenly as it takes a little while to prepare that. Other than that, to get each bowl of order, it usually takes less than 5 minutes.

The sliced meat and meat balls porridge tasted not bad with tasty lean meat and meat balls. One thing to take note that all their porridge was scalding hot and the fried fritters or "you tiao" was fried by themselves.

Sliced meat and Meat Ball Porridge - $2.50

For those who love Century eggs might consider having the lean meat with century egg porridge. This version is similar to former less the meatballs and with fresh century egg slices stirred among the porridge.

Century Egg and Lean Meat Porridge - $3
Overall, the porridge that Li Wan served is very bland and one has to squeeze some soya sauce for additional taste. For those who like to have a very bland and light meal, the shredded chicken is the perfect choice.

Shredded chicken Porridge - $2.50
Without the additional garnishing like "dong cai" and onions, it at least enhance the taste level of these bowls of plain white porridge.

Shredded chicken Porridge - $2.50

Seafood Porridge is one of the expensive ones among the bowls of porridge sold, less those in the claypots. The ingredients are more special when compared to the rest and in terms of varieties they are the best choice. It comes with cuttlefish, shredded chicken, braised peanuts and fish slices.

Seafood Porridge - $4

Their porridge are of decent serving, the only difficulties that we are facing are its queue during peak hours especially when lunch times are limited and we cant simply slurp them down our throat with such hot porridge.

Ji Xing (Fortune Star) Hainanese Curry Rice

The queue of Ji Xing Hainanese Curry Rice is going strong and steady at lunch time ever since its opening . The big portion of rice with its copious amount of unique Hainanese Curry gravy poured over the rice and selected items had irresistibly gained the nods of fellow patrons.
Having known of their giant portion, I requested for lesser rice and went ahead to order. 3 in a team, with one scooping the rice, one picking the dish and the other collecting payment. Out of them 3, the busiest seen was the one in the stall scooping customer's selected dishes and in between mixing the selected dishes with another layer of curry before placing them on the plate. However, service was quite fast with such collaboration.

Ji Xing Hainanese Curry Rice
The braised cabbages were very soft and moist as well as the bitter-gourd. Breaded porkchop was one of my favourites too! It was fried to a cripsy golden brown perfection and was cut into smaller equal pieces. Some may find the dish was quite spicy with such generous amount of curry gravy but to me it fits the bill as I prefer the "wet" look on my food rather than having the dry version.

$4.50
Their breaded pork seems standard seemed to deteriorate, unlike the past where it was meaty and not this dry.

Breaded Pork Chop

The minced meat was one of the top favourite that diners love to order. Tender and delicious, it comes in a flatter version than in a ball form.

Minced Meat  - $2
Fallen for its braised belly! It was well braised and addictive especially when it was cooked till soften, more tender than what we have in a Kong Bak Bao or similar!

Belly Richness
Just look at the distinctive layers from the belly. Yums! It's is definitely worth being sinful for once at that moment.

If you are seeking for some Hainanese Flavours in West Coast Area. Why not head down to West Coast Market Square and have a taste!
