The FlaMing 肥铭

Quite a number of my lunch mates have been hooked to this new stall in Ayer Rajah Market for the past months. There are 5 dishes The FlaMing offer with price ranging from $4.50 to $6 and for each dish / protein you select, there are 3 side dishes that one can choose from.

The Flaming
The menu are rather simple with Cajun Chicken, Kimchi Pork, Bulgogi Beef and Salmon as the main. There are also 9 sides, namely, Sous Vide Egg, Fried Egg, Corn Kernels, Broccoli, Carrot, Onion Confit, Grilled Pineapple, Korean Fish Cake and Ikan Bilis Sambal. Additional sides cost $0.80 each and should you need additional rice, it will be another $0.30. However, if you do not want the rice, you can choose to exchange it with a side dish.

Menu Board
Satay Chicken

Chicken is tender and Satay gravy was generous.

Satay Chicken 沙爹鸡肉 - $4.50
Cajun Chicken

If you do not mind black pepper and chilli on your chicken cubes, you can order their Cajun Chicken. Out of the 5 dishes, this will be my last choice on list as the chicken tasted a tad dry and rough to me with the peppercorns.

Cajun Chicken 西式鸡肉- $4.50
Kimchi Pork

If you enjoy Korean Barbecue, you will probably like their Kimchi Pork with sprinkled with sesame seeds. However the portion is in right amount with similar to the sides too.

Kimchi Pork 泡菜猪肉片 - $5
Bulgogi Beef

Had my order without rice and exchanged for additional side. Beef was tender and tasty in its sauce. Blanched vegetables like broccoli and carrots are in the right texture. However, if you are going for the Sous Vide Egg and expecatation of a poached egg with runny egg yolk, you might be disappointed here. As for the pineapple, it tasted from those sweetened canned food and grilled.

Bulgogi Beef 韩式炒牛肉 -$5.50
Salmon

For a $6 portion, that piece of salmon in the bowl is consider cheap. It is coated with some sweet sauce and topped with sesame seeds. Lemon is given to reduce the fishy smell from the fish. Squeeze some juice on it.

Salmon 三文鱼 - $6
Since Ayer Rajah Food Centre does not have any vegetarian stall.  The FlaMing might give vegetarians an alternative by ordering just sides only without the protein / meat.

Zhen Hao Wei

Zhen Hao Wei is another new find in Ayer Rajah Food Centre! The name when read in Mandarin may tells you that it's very yummy but in fact if you read into the chinese Characters, "Zhen" was actually referring to "Steam", the cooking method instead of "very". From this, the nature of the dishes had been well described by their business name. For healthier choice, Zhen Hao Wei may be an ideal option for weight watchers.

Zhen Hao Wei

Menu was mostly meat and every set meal comes with rice as well as a bowl of soup, ranges from $3.50 to $5.

Sweet taste of minced meat pancake with mustard green. Pancake was generally tender and filled with hints of sweet mustard green taste. As for the soup, ingredients used was generous with carrots, pork and raddish. The natural sweetness from the ingredients made the soup yummy. However, it was over peppery for me.

Mustard Green Minced Meat Pancake with Soup and Rice - $3.50

Minced Meat Pancake
Soup

Combination of 3 eggs in a dish was such an enjoyment. Steamed egg covered cut portions of both salted and century eggs. The distinct flavours of the egg was heavenly to me, simply love such combination. The thickness of the minced meat pancake may be a little bit thin for some but it's totally fine with me. As a minced meat pancake lover, I won't complain much about this. Moreover, it was not that oily.

Generously used of salted fish bits in the minced meat pancake, a steal for someone who enjoy salted fish.

Salted Fish with minced meat pancake - $5

With Soup, rice and a dish, I would say it complete a meal. Zhen Hao Wei is an additional choice in Ayer Rajah Food Centre, especially for Healthy goers who want to avoid oily or fried food.

Teck Kee Fresh Cockle Fried Kway Teow

Teck Kee Fresh Cockle Fried Kway Teow has been around since my school days and they are known for its delicious Fried Kway Teow with reputation build over the years.

The stall is managed by a frail looking uncle whereby his age group can be told entirely through his motions.

Opted for the chilli version of Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow at $3.00 a plate. His standard of Fried kway Teow varies from time to time, and it really depends on your luck to have the best of his Fried Kway Teow!

Char Kway Teow - $3

Luckily for once, the sweet, moist and yummy char kway teow is back! This plate tastes so old school with chinese sausage (lup cheong), absolute fresh cockles together with a noteable amount of eggs, a total reminiscent of my childhood. What's more, it is not too greasy with a good balance of moist and texture. Another one thing that makes me feel nostalgic is his traditional method of scooping up the portion of ready-fried kway Teow from the wok using the plate and frying ladle and finally with the same plate as part of my meal. You can see that my portion of kway teow is seated more to the left of the plate.

On a side note, it really pricks my heart to see that uncle is still slogging despite of his old age. It really makes people feel sad especially when he handled that plate of Char Kway Teow to me, with his hands stumbling.

Self Service will be appreciated over at the stall and be careful of the area in front of the stall as its quite slippery.

Udon

Replacing the stall Hai Xian Tang (Seafood Soup) in Ayer Rajah Food Centre will be this one and only one Japanese Stall in the Hawker. Specializing in just Udon, there are no other typical Japanese food available like Bento, Ramen or don. In fact, the dishes were rather straight forward as there are only 5 selection of Udon each with different item, namely, Inari, Ebi, Katsu Pork, Pork Belly and Karaage Chicken. For add ons like Edame and sweetcorn, patrons can top up another $0.50.

Udon
Ordering the Katsu Pork Udon, it consisted of half Japanese egg, shredded scallions, 2 slices of fish cake and cut Katsu Pork Pieces on top of the bowl of Udon Soup.

Katsu Pork Udon - $5.50
The soup was rather plain and I had the chilli powder sprinkled onto the fried pork pieces. Shortly after the dish was served, the Katsu Pork had adsorbed the soup and these meat pieces turned soggy. Therefore, the fried crispy texture no longer exist and standing up among the rest of the ingredients, it was a disappointment. In my opinion, it will be better to separate them out in order to achieve its original crispy battered surface.

Jenny Ayam Bakar Indo-Pura

I'm both happy and sad seeing new stalls appearing on our frequent dining place. Happy because I'm having new choice of food for lunch and sad because I felt sorry for the stall that was taken over if the business was not enough to cover their operations.

Jenny Ayam Bakar Indo-Pura caught my attention not because it was new but rather her stall lady who looked Chinese but serving Halal Food. As I approached the stall, she was quite friendly and asked if I need anything. To confirm my judgement, I replied back in Mandarin and asked her for recommendations. Indeed, she replied back in her fluent Mandarin, pointing at the few Ayam Bakar Dishes, she recommended Rendang which was not that spicy to us.

Jenny's Stall

The dish looked different from the picture as Ayam (Chicken) was dark brown in color. Chicken leg  has a subtle coconut fragrant and taste, giving the meat a alluring flavour in the aromatic blend of spices. Quite tantalizing to my tastebuds. Having the Ayam that steals the show from the entire dish, other compliments on the plate will be a piece of slice Tau Gua and "Ah Za" (Pickles) not forgetting the white rice that was topped with fried onions. The only gripe I had was perhaps that the meal is lacking of some bowl or soup to swallow down the rice. However, with so many staff from the drink stalls around, finding something to drink will not be any issue.

Ayam Bakar Rendang - $5

Rendang Chicken Leg
Besides having Ayam Bakar, you can get common Muslim dishes like Lontong, Mee Siam, Mee Rebus or even Mee Soto. With so many Muslim Stalls in the Hawker, competition is no doubt tougher. Adding Badgedil at additional $0.50 to the bowl of Mee Soto just made the meal complete even though the taste was more or less similar to other stalls in the vicinity.

Dullimah Sulaiman

Frankly speaking, having been to Ayer Rajah Food Centre for years, it was such a shame as I hardly try out all their Muslim stall as I choose to stick to a few. In the search of a better Mee Soto in the Hawker Cetnre, I visited Dullimah Sulaiman and saw someone taking away a plate of Tahu Goreng. I told myself, perhaps the next time I would try their Tahu Goreng.

Dullimah Sulaiman
Continuing my search for the better Mee Soto, I would say that I still could not find a one closer to my heart.

As usual, I topped up my dish with bagedil, afraiding that the basic portion may turn me hungry during tea time. Soup wise, there wasn't much to comment, stock was clear and taste with typical MSG included and topped with shredded chicken. If you are expecting nothing much, a simple meal like this could fit the bill.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle

Finally a new appearance of a new stall in Ayer Rajah Food Centre. They have taken over the vacant stall named Western Bar which was left empty for quite some time.

Though their Business Name suggest that they are selling fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle, they do also sell traditional carrot cake in white or black.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle

Having ordered Hokkien Prawn Noodle, it took quite a while before it appeared before me. Amount of moisture was definitely adequate. Though there was no heady scent of prawn favouring in the stock, I find the plate of noodles rather decent without being too overpowering. Natural sweetness from the eggs and Sotong included were fresh and tasty too.

Chang Cheng Chicken Rice

For those who have been to Ayer Rajah Food Centre before during the peak hours, Chang Cheng Chicken Rice should not be any stranger to you. They are quite popular during lunch hours and you can seen their supporters all lining up waiting for their order.

Chang Cheng Chicken Rice
Besides the normal Roasted and white chicken, they do have fried Lemon chicken rice as well as sides like Tauhu, oyster sauce vegetables and beansprouts.

What makes their chicken rice stays competitive is not only the taste of the fluffy fragrant chicken rice with tasty meat and also the additional ingredients on their plate and soup. Let's check it out.

Dices of salted vegetables as well as tomato and cucumber slices makes up the appetizer on the plate and with some lime juice over the flavored roasted chicken, it definitely level up its taste. Moreover the soup is no ordinary soup as they are murky in color filled with cooked beans as well as chicken feet. At such pricing, its definitely worth the money. With all the hits, where are the misses? Well, it would be better if they can speed up a little more during peak hours.

Truly Curry Rice (Closed)

We have all heard about the dying heritage of our local hawker business whereby the younger generations are unable to take over but lately there was a influx of young hawkers into such industry which makes a turnaround to the news.

Truly Curry Rice
The flagship stall of Truly Curry Rice comes from Telok Blangah Drive Food Centre whereby 2 youngsters gave up their high paying jobs from Forex Traders to becoming hawkers.

Truly Curry Rice Stall is relatively new in Ayer Rajah Food Centre and are selling Hainanese Style of Curry Rice. The stall is rather straight forward with the standards food items like pork belly, 'lionhead" (minced meat ball), egg, fried porkchop, etc. Unlike most of the Hainanese Curry Rice Stall, Truly Curry Rice has indicative price for their items pasted on wall, thus patrons can have a rough gauge of the overall pricing while ordering. Minimum order of 50 cents goes to the rice, while vegetables at $1 and meat items at $1.50 each. Price is pretty market rate.

Hainanese Curry Rice - $4.50

The combination of my meal includes pork chop, braised cabbages and minced meat ball. Meat ball is huge and well seasoned with hints of garlic. It has two different shades of colors, perhaps half of it was immersed in the gravy that's why. While the braised cabbages was perfectly done, taken up from the warmer and fried porkchop lean and tasted abit dry. The rice was drizzled with 2 kinds of thick lucious curry sauce which makes up a plate of Haianese Curry Rice! All was good except that the rice was abit overcooked with moisture.

Western Bar (Closed)

Western Bar is one of the new appearance to Ayer Rajah Food Centre after its renovation earlier this year. For those who know, this name "Western Bar" and its cow boy hat relates to a handheld video game which brought us some good childhood memories. Western Bar is a Western Food Stall providing delicious western delights but they are not selling any beverages though it is name as a bar. They can be easily found at the last row of the hawker centre facing the shop houses.

Western Bar
Food is prepared freshly upon order taken therefore some waiting time is required. Once the food is ready for collection, diners will be notified by the buzzer.

Buzzer
Opted for mushroom sauce over black pepper sauce for my chicken chop. The light brown sauce was luscious, creamy and tasty which complimented well with the glistering skin and juicy slab of chicken chop. While the sides were pretty standard, poached vegetables with whipped potatoes. Although the vegetables were cooked in a simple manner, they were soft and friendly on the jaws.

Chicken Chop - $6.50
While I expect the sauce on the smash potato will be similar to the chicken chop, it turns out that the sauce given was different, peppery to taste, matching the butter fragrant smashed potatoes.

Whipped Potato (Sides)
Base on the food served, their presentation is one level up as compared to those traditional ones that comes with fries. Food were decent and price falls within the comfortable range, its definitely value for money.
