Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly

A visit back here to Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly after 9 years. It was after breakfast that I wanted some drinks and I recalled this stall that I had patronized the last round.

Stall of Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly

We ordered a cup of grass jelly drink and a bowl of Granny Grass Jelly There was a queue with a few pax ahead of us.

Grass Jelly Drink - $2

Whenever it comes to grass jelly as dessert, I will very much have Attap Seed as a topping among others like Nata De Coco, Longan or sea coconut. Love the cooling Grass Jelly topped with shaved ice and 6 pieces of Attap Seed.

Grass Jelly with Attap Seed - $2.50

The bitter grass jelly was a perfect match with the sweetened Attap Seed.  Grass Jelly was wobbly and smooth.

Grass Jelly

Having grass jelly as dessert is definitely a good choice if you are in Golden Mile Food Centre.

Tian Yuan Dessert Hut 甜元

We were looking for a dessert place before heading back to Singapore and found Tian Yuan Dessert Hut within the vicinity. While the weather is so hot, we were looking for an airconditioned seating despite that they do have an outdoor table.

Tian Yuan Dessert

Tian Yuan Dessert Hut was packed and after waiting for some time, we finally got ourselves a seat. Beating the heat, some of us ordered coolers.

Sour Sop 红毛榴莲 & Cool Juice 清凉爽 - RM 8.80 & 5.40

They have a good series of hot desserts on the menu too. One of us enjoyed her Almond with Black Glutinous Rice, the white and the brown portion was very distinguished. It was smooth and not too sweet.

Almond with Black Glutinous Rice 黑糯米杏仁糊 - RM 7.80

The snow jelly & snow fungus was soothing to the throat but not enough to beat the hot weather as the portion was small. Nonetheless, it was a good dessert without being too sweet.

Snow Jelly & Snow Fungus 雪蛤炖雪耳 - RM 20.90

Perhaps the Ice Kacang Red Bean was the perfect choice of all. Unlike the usual ingredients we had, this was topped with peanuts, corn, jelly and red beans.

Ice Kacang Red Bean 红豆冰 - RM 7.90

Besides serving dessert, they are also selling other food. If we did not have our lunch earlier, we might have eaten here too.

Noodle House 面食之家

After finding food in the malls and hawker center, we decided to explore into the industrial estate for friends' recommendation. Noodle House specializes with Noodle and offer a good range of dishes that is close to the local's heart.

Noodle House

The traditional bowl of Lor Mee aka braised Noodles packed with herbs aroma in its starchy sauce. The braised pork belly were cut into small strips mixed with other ingredients like braised egg, fried wanton etc. We topped it up with garlic, vinegar, bird eye chilli, and coriander to enhance its taste.

Lor Mee - $3.50

Besides having this traditional Hokkien dish with thin flat yellow noodles, we had ordered Kway Teow.

Lor Mee (Kway Teow) - $3.50

Hor Fun was a praiseworthy dish if you are a fan of "Wok Hei". The Noodles comprised of the aroma and were generously soaked in the pool of gravy with a fried egg topping up the dish.

Hor Fun

Ingredients were nothing out of the standard. It includes, prawn, vegetables, fishcakes and meat.

Their dishes are considered the better-rated ones in the industry area.

Hazlin Lemang Gelang Patah

Upon passing by a tentage by the roadside on our way to Pekan Nanas and noticing the display of bamboo, we quickly hurried and turned into the tent. I was elated, thinking that I had finally spotted this Traditional Food that we had been discussing.

Better known as Lemang or Rice Bamboo, it's made from glutinous rice, coconut milk and salt. They are cooked in hollowed bamboo tubes coated with banana leaves and cooked by the fire.

As I walked closer, there was a lot of smoke and I saw that the fire was fueled by the burning of coconut husks.

Fire

The friendly guy gave us a series of numbers conversed in Melayu, 12, 15, 18 and 20, asking which portion we would like to buy. We chose the biggest portion that cost RM 20.

Opening up the Bamboo

The guy had picked a few bamboos before this, ensuring that the glutinous rice was cooked before he cuts the rice into equal portions.

Cutting Up The Lemang

They also sell Rendang to pair along with Lemang but we chose to enjoy it in its original taste.

Fragrance Glutinous Rice

It was my first time appreciating Lemang. It tasted like one of the Nyonya kueh packed with the natural pandan fragrant. While glutinous rice is stomach-filling, we managed to share this traditional food among ourselves during lunchtime.

Let's have Lemang

Its an eye-opener to see how Lemang was cooked from a road side stall.

PS: As it was a roadside stall, I do not have its exact address but only its GPS Coordinates. Nonetheless, its located in Pekan Nanas.

Hakata Ikkousha 博多一幸舎

While friends were mentioning about free gyozas from Hakata Ikkousha for the Birthday, we decided to make a trip down to Chijmes. With a minimum purchase of 4 bowls of Ramen, the Birthday Girl / Guy gets free gyozas and the number of Gyozas given is based on the age. Besides the 4 bowls of Ramen as minimum criteria, promotion valid only one day before and after the birthday date and actual birthday date. This is a good chance to celebrate the special occasion with your love ones too.

These free gyozas were simply delicious and addictive.

Birthday Promotion

I managed to order what I had missed out during my first trip to Hakata Ikkousha. The bowl of Bonito Ramen was stated as limited ramen, it tasted as good with stock made up of Chicken, Bonito and Pork. There was no overpowering of Bonito flavour. Likewise, it came with Pork Cha Shu, Bamboo Shoots, Seaweed & Spring Onions. My bowl of Ramen would not be completed without topping up an additional flavoured egg.

Bonito Ramen - $15.50 + $2.50

While I think that its a Ramen place, the focusing dish should be Ramen. However,  their Golden Fried Rice was flavourful. The bowl of fragrant rice was deliciously mixed with eggs, green onion and meat. Meanwhile their menu also states that this item on their side menu is also limited order too.

Golden Fried Rice - $11

Yong Le Ku Gua Mi Fen Tang 永乐苦瓜米粉汤 干捞猪肝

Our planned lunch destination was permanently closed and we quickly settled down at the nearby food centre. There were not many stalls open during then and with a limited choice, I quickly ordered my bowl of noodles from Yong Le Kedai Makan.

Yong Le Kedai Makan

Upon seeing the word Bittergourd, I could not resist but drew myself closer to their stall and took a look at the menu.

Menu

I ordered Bee Tai Mak Dry with a bowl of Bitter Gourd Soup. The Bee Tai Mak was tossed in sweet black sauce and topped with minced pork, and chopped & fried onion. Simple and tasty that I could finish up the entire bowl of noodles without having the bowl of soup.

Mee Daging+ Sup Peria 肉脆面 + 苦瓜汤 - RM 7

The soup was tasty with hints of Chinese wine and strips of ginger were added to add freshness to the soup. Ingredients include thin slices of bitter gourd, tomato, fishballs,  minced meat, lean meat, liver and pork kidney.

Soup

Soup was ideally sweetened by the use of the above ingredients and best of all, the texture of the kidney and pork kidney was more than what I had expected. It was rich and not overly done. Stall owners were proud that the kidney was well cleaned and indeed there is no trace of foul smell.

Kidney

It was indeed a rare find along the road while we were travelling in Pekan Nanas, the portion is indeed generous.

Cottage Spices

We did the same thing again by filling u our stomachs with Cottage Spices Nyonya Food before leaving Malacca for Singapore, 6 years apart. Having experienced long queues even on a weekday, we had decided to visit the place as soon as it starts operating for the day.

Cottage Spices - A Taste of Melaka

The coverage of their menu as well as the batik table cloth still feel familiar to me from the last visit. Groups of customers came strolling into the Restaurant after we settled down.

Menu

Otak Otak also better known as Steamed Fish Cake. As a starter dish, this whet our appetite for more. It was not overly spicy and the taste of fish as well as spices were prominent.

Otak-Otak 蒸娘惹鱼饼 - RM 26 (Medium)

Sotong Sambal Petal is one of the recommended dishes under the Seafood Menu. The squid was fried with stink bean and well coated with sambal sauce and cut onions.

Sotong Sambal Petai 参巴臭豆墨鱼 - RM 41

Out of the Egg dishes, Telur Dadar Cinclok is still a popular choice among us. The fermented shrimps omelette was fluffy and went well with our plates of rice.

Telur Dadar Cincalok 娘惹虾子酱煎蛋 - RM 19 (Medium)

Ayam Buah Keluak aka Black Nut Chicken is one of my favourite Nyonya dish for ordering. The spices is strong and chicken was tender.

Ayam Buah Keluak 黑果鸡 - RM 33 (Regular)

The sour and spicy Tamarind Fish Head was the bomb! The tangy Nyonya flavour gravy was perfect to go with the plate of white rice.

Asam Pedas Kepala Ikan Nyonya 娘惹阿参鱼头 - RM 58

The Asam Pedas was addictive and the fish was cooked together in some lady fingers and brinjas. Very appetizing dish!

Lady's Fingers & Brinja

The stewed chicken in fermented bean paste together with potato cubes and slices of mushroom were delicious too.

Ayam Pongteh 娘惹酱汁鸡 - RM 22 (Regular)

Sambal dish is the quintessential of the Nyonya cuisine and if you are a fan of Brinja

Terung Sambal 茄子叁巴 - RM 25 (Medium)

Here's another recommended dishes under the seafood section. The prawns were well cooked in coconut milk with pineapple. The spice together with the fragrant coconut milk and sour taste from the pineapple were perfect.

Udang Lemak Nenas 凤梨椰奶明虾 - RM 69

The meal would not be completed without the cuisine's staple dessert like cendol. It was a small serving topped with red bean, coconut jelly and drenched with gula melaka and coconut milk.

Cendol 晶露 - RM 5.80

Dessert

While the recommended Nyonya Restaurants in Malacca are always crowded during peak hours, it will be best to visit them early. A pet peeve here maybe that the car parking lots were rather limited in the area.
