Carrot Cake

It all started with a craving for carrot cake. My pal suddenly recalled a particular stall in Serangoon; before we knew it, a spontaneous plan was set in motion. With unanimous agreement, we made an impromptu trip to Chomp Chomp Food Centre—supper for some, but dinner for me!

Carrot Cake

To satisfy our cravings, we decided to go for the best of both worlds—one plate of white carrot cake and another of black. That way, we could enjoy both flavors to the fullest!

Black Carrot Cake - $3

The black carrot cake came in smaller-than-usual bite-sized pieces—almost mini for me. Nonetheless, the taste was spot on, with a nice balance of sweetness from the sauce, eggs, and preserved radish bits.

On the other hand, the white carrot cake was served in larger blocks. It had a good texture and was equally tasty in its own way, making both versions enjoyable in their own right.

White Carrot Cake - $3

If you were to ask for my verdict on the plate of Carrot Cake, I'd say it tastes good, but I wouldn’t make a special trip just for it, especially when better options are available in our vicinity.

8 Degrees 8度空間

While the price of air tickets to Taiwan is soaring, it makes sense to enjoy some Taiwanese food here to satisfy the craving.

Oysters are plump and the chitterlings given were generous. Topped their bowl of Mee Sua with some vinegar and chilli to slurp everything up!

Oyster & Chitterling Mee Sua 综合面线 - $6.80

The Stewed Pork Belly Rice style comprises a mixture of lean and fatty meat accompanied by braised egg and pickles. As much as I love Stewed Pork Belly Rice, the braised taste was on the bland side.

Stewed Pork Belly Rice 八度卤肉饭 - $6

The Scallion Oil Chicken Rice was flavorful and yummy with a generous amount of scallion and tender chicken. Totally in love with its sweet and savoury sauce.

Scallion Oil Chicken Rice 葱油鸡肉饭 - $6

King Oyster Mushrooms were sliced and marinated, it gave a tad of spicy mala kick and made a good appetizer. We love the unique way of how this dish was prepared.

Marinated King Oyster Mushroom 香麻杏鲍菇 - $6

What's visiting Taiwanese café without ordering their Milk Tea? Sugar level can be chosen and grass jelly were smooth while the pearls were commendable with chewy texture.

Grass Jelly Milk Tea, Milk Tea with Pearls, Jasmine Green Tea with Pearls - $6.90, $5.90, $5.10 (Big)

The egg roll had a soft wrapped cradling the generous amount of pork floss.

Eggroll with Pork Floss 肉松蛋饼 - $7

These Chitterlings were deep fried to their crispiness garnished by the shredded refreshing cucumbers. Dipping them into the roasted sesame sauce would enhance the taste of the bites.

Fried Chitterling 炸卤大肠 - $8.80

We had another side dish with pork floss too. The brinjals were battered and showered with pork floss and some cut spring onions. The pillowy soft texture was inviting.

Thank you Scale Micro Influence and 8 Degree for the invitation.

Hong Sha Li Satay

Our stomachs go hungry whenever we reach Chomp Chomp Food Centre thus we started running around, ordering numerous dishes from different stalls.

Hong Sha Li
Hong Sha Li

There is a minimum order of 10 sticks and we had Chicken, Mutton and Pork Satay, 5 each, making up a total of 15 sticks. The Satay was beautifully charred and the chicken meat was tender and savoury. The mutton Satay was slightly tough but nicely marinated and sweetened. Pork Satay was not too fatty and was succulent.

Chicken, Mutton & Pork with Ketupat
Chicken, Mutton & Pork with Ketupat - $0.70 per stick / pcs

The Ketupat was decent. We dipped the satay and ketupat into the peanut sauce that comes with pineapple paste. All in all, for pricing and portion, it is relatively on the friendlier side. No doubt that it may not be the best but it is good enough to fix the satay cravings.

Fu BBQ Seafood

While there are a few BBQ Seafood stalls in Chomp Chomp Food Centre, we picked Fu BBQ Seafood by random and decided to make use of our CDC vouchers for the meal.

Stall of Fu BBQ Seafood

Like the other BBQ Seafood stalls, their menu items were rather common and familiar, staying competitive to all other stalls of similar trade, ranging from vegetables to seafood.

Food Menu

The Salted Egg Flavour was good with Sotong and has a tad spicy kick. It had a strong salted egg fragrance however, it lacked the crispiness and was tad soggy.

Salted Egg Sotong 蛋黄苏东 - $18 (Small)

While the Qing Long Cai lover spots this dish on the menu, there was no hesitation about ordering this.
This popular dish was stirred fried with beansprouts as well as sliced carrots. We were quite disappointed for the vegetables was overcooked and soggy, losing the crunchiness that we were expecting out of this familiar dish.

Stir Fried Qing Long Vegetables 清炒青龙菜 - $8

BBQ  Stingray was slathered with spicy hot sambal and we were given lime as well as "Chinchalok" (Sauce made up of fermented shrimps) to pair with it.

BBQ Stingray 烧烤方鱼 - $15

The meat was thick but the sambal was on a saltier side and the sauce was not strong enough to cover up the stinky smell of the meat.

Thick Stingray Meat

While Chomp Chomp is known to be a food heaven with plenty of BBQ Seafood stall, I will very much like to give other stall a chance the next round when I visit them.

Chia Keng Fried Hokkien Mee

The plate of old-school Fried Hokkien Mee from Chomp Chomp Food Centre has highly raved. If you prefer the old-school style with a combination of yellow noodles with Bee Hoon and a wetter, creamy gravy, Chia Keng Fried Hokkien Mee might fit you.

The plate of Hokkien Mee had distinct Wok Hei and prawny flavours. Not only was the plate of HKM old school, the chilli is also distinctly powerful.

Mr Tan who is in his 70s is seen sitting on a high chair frying the Hokkien Mee. During peak hours, this plate of traditional Hokkien Mee may demand up to a wait of 45 minutes.

Nic & Tom Eatery [Closed]

Prior to setting up Nic & Tom Eatery, this pair of cousins have been helping up at the popular Yong Tau Foo Stall, Bai Nian 百年, owned by their dad/uncle. Despite being young age, Nicholas and Tommy have already experienced the F& B Industry from working for Bai Nian. This duo has innovated dishes and sharing comfort food at an affordable pricing.

The Fried Fish Fingers was pieces of fried fish fillet served with some nachos cheese by the side. The color was rather pale and did not look inviting.

Ee Fu Noodle 海鲜伊府面 - $9.90

However, we were kind of disappointed as it was a tad dry for our liking.

The Chinese translation of the dish's name gave me a smile. The aroma of the cheese from The Royal Cheese Beehoon greeted us. This recommended Signature dish came with fresh abalones, sweet and bit succulent prawns.

Royal Cheese Beehoon 皇家气死米粉 - $19.90

The cheese broth contains umami flavours and strands of Bee Hoon were soaked in the broth and topped with fried garlic.

Ingredients

It has been quite some time since we have come across the word "Tuck Shop". In fact, this small little bowl of pearl rice is what people have been raving for. The bowl of rice was packed with aromatic pearl rice drenched with some braised sauce, coupled with some crispy fried pork and topped with a sunny side up egg. It's not that you can order many bowls as each dine-in customer is limited to 1 order only.

Tuck Shop Rice 食堂饭 - $1.90

I was caught by surprised that the Creme Brulee was served in the chinese bowl. The rich custard was topped with a layer of torched caramelized sugar.

Creme Brulee 小布雷 - $3.90

There are a good variety of dishes in the menu and the good thing is that there is no service charge and GST required.

Chindamani Indian Restaurant Pte Ltd

The stall caught my attention with its long snaky queue a few months back when I was in Serangoon North Area for breakfast. Since I already had my breakfast during then, it was not possible for me to handle another meal in a short span of time.

Chindamani, is located at one corner of the coffee shop and they pride themselves on their popular crispy roti prata since 2008. They are customer service orientated and aims to provide quality food.

Chindamani Indian Restaurant Pte Ltd

The stall is considerably big and they have plastered a lot of photos on the pillar.

Over at the counter, the crew will ask the total number of Prata for the order and once ready, they will stack everything up on a plate. Thereafter, they will provide you with the number of plates and curry accordingly.

Egg Onion and Kosong Prata - $7 (2 pieces each)

We were lucky during the time of visit as we were not required to queue. We ordered Egg Onions and Kosong Prata. Just as the signboard mentioned, they are crispy in texture and did not disappoint. It is a near texture to eating biscuit but in a thin form if this style floats your boat.

Comparing its crispiness between the 2 types of prata which we had ordered, the Kosong Prata will be better.

It was a good experience enjoying crispy and not that oily prata.

The search for Taiwanese food in Singapore can never end since we are not able to travel overseas. Trying out several Taiwanese Food from places, hoping that they can curb the cravings of Taiwanese food for the moment.

Interior of 8 Degrees is nothing fanciful but simple and straight forward, line up with wooden tables and chairs.

In 8 Degrees Dining Area

For any trip to the Taiwan night market, we can never miss out on ordering Milk Tea and there is no exception here. We ordered the house 8 Degree Bubble Milk Tea with Pearl and Milk Tea with Coffee Crystal. The Milk Tea was not too sweet and refreshing especially in hot weather.

The Mee Sua standard was not too bad coupled with a few plump pieces of oysters as well as Chitterlings.

It's not the salted crispy chicken that we longed for. We were expecting more of some popcorn chicken with salt and pepper flavours but this is out of our expectations. The taste is more like a normal chicken cutlet cut into smaller pieces.

You can have it served hot or cold. The Yam Ball Grass Jelly is refreshing, however not cold enough as a whole.

Overall, I find that the Taiwanese food served here is more of a lighter taste but for my liking, I will prefer Taiwanese food to be heavier in the taste.

Soon Kee Wanton Mee

Soon Kee Wanton Mee Stall is also one of the popular stalls in Pek Kio Market & Food Center where one notices the queue line up in front of the stall. So what's the fuss? Let's take a look at it.

Stall with Queue

Though the bigger portion was just a $0.50 difference, I find that the portion was rather generous not only for the noodles but also the slices of char siew. The noodles were slightly thicker than the usual Mee Kia I had and was springy. The sauce they use was slightly different from the usual ones we have and indeed, it has a familiar old school taste. Besides that, the Char Siew was home made too.

Wanton Mee - $4

While the Wanton comes in 3 in the soup bowl.

The other item on their menu will be their shrimp dumpling noodle instead.

Shrimp Dumplings Noodle - $4

Shrimp Dumplings are plump and juicy for instance, however nothing extraordinary about the fillings and taste.

Have no idea what to eat in Pek Kio Market & Food Center? Perhaps following the length of the queue from the stall may be a good guide to make a choice of your meal.
