Xiang Run Dessert

The saying that goes there is always room for dessert even after a meal is true. Maybe we should blame it on the weather for it was raining heavily and naturally, we felt more hungry than the usual days. Or perhaps, we need something hot to warm our body after being caught in the rain.

Stall of Xiang Run Dessert

Such traditional dessert is always a bowl of comfort food for Asian like us. The Bubur Terigu was warm and we opted for coconut milk to be served together with this. It was tasty and the level of sweetness was perfect for us.

Bubur Terigu - $1.50

Texture was soft yet maintaining the chew for the grains. Hints from fragrance of the pandan used in the dessert together with the coconut milk was heart warming.

Spoonful of Bubur Terigu

Traditional flavoured dessert like the Pulut Hitam is still the best that warms us on a rainy day like this. Similarly, the sweetness level was mild and definitely a go for us.

Pulut Hitam - $1.50

We opted for coconut milk to savour the small bowl of Pulut Hitam.

Pulut Hitam

Xiang Run Dessert focus on just a few traditional kinds of dessert at neighborhood market pricing. I do not see a reason for not coming back for such homely cooked bowls of Traditional Desserts.

Cheng Ji Chao Xia Mian Hao Jian 成記炒蝦麵蠔煎

I have seen a handful of tables having a plate of Fried Oyster and was curious about the taste. No doubt that the reviews online did not side the stall, there is still a substantial queue lining up during peak hours.

Stall of Cheng Ji Chao Xia Mian Hao Jian

The stall is known for its Hokkien Mee & Fried Oyster, thus we decided to order both.

Our Orders

The Hokkien Mee comprised a mixture of thick yellow noodles and white noodles with eggs, Sotong beansprouts and prawns, garnished with spring onions and lime with a dollop of chilli tuck by the side. The dish was quite straightforward and ordinary, its not those savoury thick prawns broth style or those that are packed with Wok Hei taste if you are looking for one. Decent enough if you are looking for a meal to fill your stomach.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee - $3

My personal preference will be their Fried Oyster if I were to compare both dishes that we had ordered. The Fried Oyster has a good ratio of starch and egg, crispily fried with a charred taste. The chilli that was supposed to enhance the taste was diluted.  Nevertheless, the dish goes well alone too without it.

Fried Oyster - $3.50

Perhaps it was our day as we did not have any unpleasant encounters with the lady behind the stove. Overall, the taste is on average with pocket-friendly pricing. Looks like its time to explore other stalls within that Food Centre.

Centre Satay Bee Hoon

While browsing the social media for Satay Bee Hoon, Centre Satay Bee Hoon is listed as one of the recommended in the list. There are actually 2 stalls in the Food Centre that are selling Satay Bee Hoon. Although both have their own pool of fans, Centre Satay Bee Hoon stall is plastered with a handful of media articles and staff are dressed in uniform Tee.

Centre Satay Bee Hoon Stall

The plate is generously filled with the peanut sauce, covering up the vermicelli. We got the middle size portion at $5 and ingredients includes kang kong, cuttlefish, prawns, cockles, sliced pork, and tau pok.

Satay Bee Hoon - $5

The type of prawns was translucent and I preferred the usual pink with red tails prawns that I usually had.

Ingredients Revealed

The thick and savoury satay sauce was adequate to cover every strand of Bee Hoon. In fact, it blends in well and was not very spicy.

Toss the Bee Hoon

Although Satay Bee Hoon may seem to be a simple and straightforward dish, the preparation of peanut sauce from scratch is laborious as one has to dry roast the peanuts first then cook with sauce over a long time.

Stay Bee Hoon

Overall, Centre Satay Bee Hoon serving and taste is decent. Coming from the Western Part of Singapore, my vote still goes to the one in Bukit Timah.

Zheng Zeng Handmade Pau 真蒸手工包

Heard that the Pork Belly Pau was strongly advocated for and we decided to explore the area. Upon reaching the HDB Block, I was stunned by the length of queue. However, in the blink of eyes, the queue was cleared in a speedy manner.

Stall of Zheng Zeng

No doubt that the queue was cleared, it left us with only one Signature Pork Belly Pau to order and we were told to wait for another 20 minutes to half an hour for the next batch of Pau to be ready.

Orders in Disposable Plate

The Siew Mai are rather ordinary in taste. Decent enough if you want just want some bites or fill the stomach.

Siew Mai

The Pork Belly Pau aka Kong Bak Pau was what made our presence there. The meat was well marinated and fragrant with a good balance of fats that literally melts in our mouth. The savoury sweet tasting meat goes well with the handmade pau. Delicious and sinfully good.

Pork Belly Pau - $1.50

Upon biting down of the Pau, I was elated as I have been looking for this familiar taste for quite a long time since one of my favorite Pau Shop in Ang Mo Kio has moved. The Pau was tender and soft, encasing the well marinated and juicy meat. It has an oriental cooking wine taste that goes well with a portion of hard boil egg within.

Meat Pau - $1.70

Zheng Zeng Handmade Pau is of quality and uses premium ingredients selectively. They do have another branch located at Toa Payoh. Its kind of disappointing that they do not have one in the Western Region of Singapore.

Nic & Tom Eatery [Closed]

Prior to setting up Nic & Tom Eatery, this pair of cousins have been helping up at the popular Yong Tau Foo Stall, Bai Nian 百年, owned by their dad/uncle. Despite being young age, Nicholas and Tommy have already experienced the F& B Industry from working for Bai Nian. This duo has innovated dishes and sharing comfort food at an affordable pricing.

The Fried Fish Fingers was pieces of fried fish fillet served with some nachos cheese by the side. The color was rather pale and did not look inviting.

Ee Fu Noodle 海鲜伊府面 - $9.90

However, we were kind of disappointed as it was a tad dry for our liking.

Close up for Ee Fu Noodles

The Chinese translation of the dish's name gave me a smile. The aroma of the cheese from The Royal Cheese Beehoon greeted us. This recommended Signature dish came with fresh abalones, sweet and bit succulent prawns.

Royal Cheese Beehoon 皇家气死米粉 - $19.90

The cheese broth contains umami flavours and strands of Bee Hoon were soaked in the broth and topped with fried garlic.

Ingredients

It has been quite some time since we have come across the word "Tuck Shop". In fact, this small little bowl of pearl rice is what people have been raving for. The bowl of rice was packed with aromatic pearl rice drenched with some braised sauce, coupled with some crispy fried pork and topped with a sunny side up egg. It's not that you can order many bowls as each dine-in customer is limited to 1 order only.

Tuck Shop Rice 食堂饭 - $1.90

I was caught by surprised that the Creme Brulee was served in the chinese bowl. The rich custard was topped with a layer of torched caramelized sugar.

Creme Brulee 小布雷 - $3.90

There are a good variety of dishes in the menu and the good thing is that there is no service charge and GST required.

Old Airport Road Western Barbeque [Closed]

If you have been to Old Airport Road Hawker Center in the search for food, I bet that you sure have heard the few recommended stalls and one of them is none other than the western food stall. The Hainanese Western Food has been established in 1974 by Uncle Wiliam Lim. With the sibling team manning the branch and continuing their father legacy, I'm glad that we do not have to travel all the way to old airport road to enjoy their western food.

An illustrated menu gives patrons an idea of what to order and some items on the menu allow customers to get a choice of either garlic or brown sauce.

What would you like to have?
What would you like to have?

Like many other places, we are making use of the buzzer to collect the food when its ready over at the counter.

If you have tried the Old Airport Western BBQ or even heard of it, you are no stranger to what the stall is popular with ~ Original creator of the garlic sauce as what their signboard suggests.

We ordered the well-marinated chicken chop and the plate comes with crinkle-cut french fries, a serving of coleslaw and packaged bread. The slab of chicken was well marinated and generously drench with their popular garlic sauce. No doubt that it was garlicky with chopped garlic bits visibly seen, I find that the sauce has well balanced out with some sweetness, bringing out the savouriness.

Chicken Chop
Chicken Chop - $7

While I'm expecting breaded chicken from their cutlet, the chicken cutlet looks mostly similar to what we have for the chicken chop just that the cutlet was darker in colour with more charred edges. Nevertheless, the chicken still remains succulent. Another item that is worth mentioning is none other than the old-school butter bread that was in the packaging. It has a nostalgic taste with a layer of vanilla cream sandwich in the middle.

The garlic sauce is either a love or hate affair, if you are no fan of garlic, you may want to opt for brown sauce or even choose other dishes without the use of garlic sauce. As for those who are mad for garlic, this creation may suit your style.

STR TAO Taiwan Cuisine

The craving for Taiwanese Food just never stop and I'm quite surprised that the stall is set up among the industrial area not only that, the menu they offer were quite extensive, from ramen to the staples food in Taiwanese Cuisine like Braised Pork Rice, popcorn chicken, fried sweet potato etc.

Stall of STR TAO Taiwan Cuisine

I was thrown with surprised as I flipped through the pages of the menu they had and also looked into their menu boards. It was an impressive array of Taiwanese Food. With the consistent pinging orders from the food delivery machines, it made my heart skip a bit as I was quite pressurized to decide fast on the spot as I worried that the kitchen might be busy.

Menu

I would not say I am a huge fan of Taiwanese Crepe or Pancake but this had got me hooked. The crepe thickness was of the right amount and strike a good balance with cheese, scallion and pork floss. On top of that, a few dollops of nachos cheese were given by its side, dab some onto the pancake and enjoy!

Taiwan Scallion Egg Pan Cake with Cheese and Pork Floss 肉松葱油蛋饼 - $6.80

Close Up On

To begin with, I love sweet potatoes fries and these classic Taiwanese Street Snacks aren't exceptional too. It is also one of the popular items on the menu.

Deep-Fried Sweet Potato with Plum Seasoning 甘梅地瓜- $4.50

The nature sweet tasting potato was coated with a crisp batter that was fried to golden perfection and the plum powder together with salt had made this snack more addictive!

Come have a bite!

The Mee Sua base is formed up by the umami-rich bonito flakes with minced garlic, black vinegar and coriander. The infused chilli oil add spiciness to the bowl and this bowl of oyster Mee Sua just never disappoint.

One of the Taiwanese Must Have will be the Signature Braised Pork Rice. The mixture of braised pork belly, minced meat, braised peanuts and cabbage is decked up by a bed of pearl rice. The bowl was sprinkled with chopped spring onions and tucked with a dollop of chilli too. We added the braised egg 卤蛋 at an additional $0.80.

Personally, I love the herbal infused pork belly chunks that boasted a strong scent of cinnamon and star anise. What's more, they have a good amount of melt in the mouth fats and tender meat.

Signature Braised Pork Rice 台式卤肉饭 - $6.80

This hidden gem among the industrial estate is definitely worth highlighting especially for those who are craving Taiwanese food. Though the pricing may be steeper compared to other food in the industrial estate, I would say the price paid is worth the taste. The selection is of a good variety and I will be back for others.
