Restoran Tian Lai

While in Geylang Patah, we visited Restoran Tien Lai instead of visiting the usual Cze Char Eateries that we always patronize. It's not easy to grab a parking lot during the peak hours. The built-up of Restoran Tien Lai is located in someone's residential home.

We lined up and waited at the entrance before being allocated a table. Just at the entrance, we get to see fish tanks filled with live seafood.

Live Seafood

There were live lobsters, different kinds of fish as well as Shell Food in the tanks.

Tanks

Restoran Tien Lai is bustling with locals and fellow Singaporeans, in groups or families, filling up the big tables within the premises, making the place "full house".

Dining Area

What I like about Seafood dining in Malaysia is that we get to pick and select the type of fish

Golden Snapper - RM 70

Lobster in Tank

While waiting for the food to be served, we ordered the pure Kedondong juice. It was refreshing with sour plum in it.

Kedondong Drink

We opted for the Hong Kong Style to be done on the fish. The fish was perfectly steamed to the tenderness in its meat and the fragrant soy sauce was good to drench onto the fish. Out of all the dishes we had ordered, this was the most satisfying one.

Golden Snapper

Their style of Sambal Lala was something out of our expectations. Even though it was not very spicy in the chilli sauce, they tasted more towards the taste of Indian Curry Spice.

Sambal Lala - RM 35

We had the Green Dragon Vegetables Stirred Fried with Garlic. The execution of the dish was pretty straight forward and every piece of green was evenly shine in its glistering color.

Vegetables - RM 15

Ordering their plate of Hor Fun can never go wrong if you are looking for standard noodle dishes. The pieces of Charred Flat Noodles were filled with "Wok Hei" flavours, soaked in the gooey sauce with egg whites. The plate of noodles had the standard ingredients including pork, egg and vegetables.

Hor Fun - RM 9 (Small)

Since it's a popular place among us in Johor, I guess we will be back again for other kinds of seafood if we are in the area for dinner.

Binchotan

We kind of strayed away from the mainstream visits recently on our trips into Johor Bahru as we find that Cafe Hopping and dining in Mall restaurants are getting duller day by day.

Binchotan

Due to that, our trip to Johor Bahru was always a last-minute decision, we could never get a last-minute reservation from Binchotan after many attempts but we were glad we finally made it here.

Binchotan

The wooden theme furnishing may looked a bit in the 70s but it kind of shows a level of class with the marble cooking area with the wooden theme. Under the use of warm lighting, the settings feel comfortable.

Open Kitchen with Charcoal BBQ Stove

The atmosphere of the restaurant was good. Moreover, the attentive and friendly staff cater to our individual requests from the time of sitting down till the time of walking out of the restaurant.

On the Table

We enjoyed the impeccable service rendered during the visit.

Where Omakase takes place

We opted for the Yama Omakase and Taiyou Omakase priced at RM 268 and RM 468 respectively. The menu tends to change seasonally and it will be good to inform the chef about one's dietary preference prior to the visit.

Menu

As soon as we sat down, we were offered hot towel and choice of drink.

Our Drink and Utensils

Opening of the Omakase session with Zensai, Japanese Style Meal Appetizer.

Zensai

Yama Omakase

Served with 1 Zensai, the sphere-shaped crispy biscuit on the top was opened, containing sashimi bits topped with roes.

Taiyou Omakase

Served with 2 Zensai, an additional bite-size pau and was advised to finish it in a mouth as the fillings would be oozing out.

These items were placed on a bed of beans, assumingly for decoration.

1 & 2 Zensai

When you get a cheerful chef, you know you will get good food. The chef is dedicated to every detail of the dish. Each dish was beautifully crafted and the use of ingredients was also explained by him.

Torching the meat

Sashimi

Sashimi

Taiyou Omakase has 3 kinds of Sashimi. We were served with Oyster on the shell paired with sweetened green apple sauce adorn by mini flowers.

The Shirako tasted weird to me initially with its smooth and creamy taste.

While the last sashimi on the place was raw fish topped with wakame.

3 Types of Sashimi (Taiyou Omakase)

Carpaccio

While only the Taiyou Omakase set offers Carpaccio, I would say that the slices are thick and pairing with the seasonings as well as toppings, its awesome!

Carpaccio

2 Handrolls

With the Yama Omakase set, these 2 handrolls were part of it.

The Chef took out the slices of fish, placed them on the stone and fired them with the blow torch.

Blow Torching

It was not rolled up typically like what we had from the Japanese restaurant, instead, it was served on a wooden block that cradles the Seafeed and rice with the torched slices of fishes placed on it.

Handroll with Rice & Fish

Likewise for the Unagi, it was taken out from their fridge and torched before serving.

Unagi

We enjoyed the crispy sheet of seaweed together with the sweet-coated unagi and rice.

Handroll with Unagi

Hot Dishes

The Yama Omakase was entitled to only 1 hot dish while the Taiyou Omakase gets 3 of it.

The Miso glazed Eggplant was soft and charred on its sides. If you enjoy having eggplant, you will absolutely love this. The eggplant is well caramelized on the edges and its so creamy in the middle. The dish was topped with sakura ebi as well as Ebiko.

Miso Glazed Egg Plant

The 2nd Hot dish was none other than the Chicken sausage which the chef had related to me as Malaysian's popular street food "Lok Lok". It was served with egg yolk by the side and had flower petals as well as caviars topping up the dish.

Chicken Sausage

We were served with stewed lobster with its plump and succulent meat in natural sweetness, The Lobster was decked up by white asparagus and topped with some cut chives.

Stewed Lobster

Mini Beef Don or Chirashi Don

For the Taiyou Omakase, we get to choose between Mini Beef Don or Chirashi Don. We opted for the Mini Beef Don. The marinated beef was BBQ under the charcoal fire by a staff in the open kitchen.

Beef

It was then sliced into pieces and plated nicely on a bed of pearl white rice with Uni, egg yolk & topped with Caviar, slices of truffle as well and chives. Look at the yummy pieces of pinkish slices of beef.

Mini Beef Don

Soup

We were served with the Lala soup. It has a concentrated taste without any sights of the Lala Clams. It was explained that the soup was boiled 2 days before serving us.

Lala Soup

Dessert

All good things come with an end. Here's the lovely ending with dessert.

The Yama Omakase set gets a serving of the Yuzu sorbet adorned by the orange Yuzu Sauce and is topped with dried frozen strawberries.

Yuzu Sorbet

While the Taiyou Omakase Set was served with Matcha Ice Cream puff and Milk in the puff. They are aesthetically presented on a mini platform with flowers and an Autumn leaf.

Ice Cream & Puff

If you feel like having something special apart from the mainstream cafes and malls' restaurants, perhaps having Omakase in Johor Bahru can spice up the itineraries as well as experience a different level of culinary in Malaysia.

Akaka Melaka Cendol @ Toppen Shopping Centre

A popup stall in the mall in the middle among the shops in Toppen shopping mall gives us every good reason for a stopover after doing our shopping in the mall. Besides proving Cendol, they are also selling authentic local desserts and kuehs made from all-natural ingredients.

They pride themselves with no preservatives or sweeteners added, giving patrons a guilt-free enjoyment.

Akaka Cendol

Melaka Cendol

Akaka Cendol that comes with Glutinous by the side. We were advised to enjoy the glutinous rice before it hardened become of coldness from the ice.

Akaka Chendol - 10.90

The Gula Melaka that drenched the Ice was simply divine. It was not cloying and coupled with the fragrance of the coconut milk, we felt so refreshed after consuming them.

Akaka Chendol - 10.90

Ingredients include green coconut jelly as well as grass jelly with Attap Seed.

We were surprised that these fried Kuehs were complimentary. The bite-size kueh was lightly battered and deep-fried. While some people like their 9 layers of Kueh to be fried, I prefer its original taste.

Fried Kueh

I won't mind heading back to this rest stop again if I'm shopping in Toppen Shopping Centre again.

Nasi Lemak Bee Hoon

Nasi Lemak Bee Hoon is just a stall beside Mentai Sens. Funtastic Nasi Lemak Bee Hoon is a chain stall specializing in selling Nasi Lemak and Bee Hoon. They are open as early as 6am.

Nasi Lemak Bee Hoon

Bringing Nasi Lemak to the next level, instead of using the normal jasmine rice, they use Basmati rice with fresh coconut which is a healthier choice.

We had Set 1 which is Nasi Lemak with Chicken Cutlet and egg. Look at the long-grain rice, they were fluffy and aromatic. Every set comes with fried anchovies and peanuts. We also topped up the set with an Otah too. The chicken cutlet was crispy and fragrant on the outside with a juicy bite.

Set 1

Dipping these fried cutlets in their signature recipe sambal chilli, gave a good elevation to the dish.

Chicken Cutlet

The meal is not restricted to the sets only and patrons are free to top up their set or order ala carte. For this we ordered the Curry Vegetables on top of Set 1, if you are a fan of Nasi Lemak with gravy, you might want to try this too.

Set 1 topped with Sayur Lodeh

We also ordered Set 2 which comprised of pork chop, egg and Nasi Lemak. The pork chop is battered and not from frozen meat, it's said to be made with their own recipe.

Set 2

Comparing Chicken Cutlet and Pork Chop, I prefer the former as they tasted more of a crispy texture.

Set 2 topped with Taiwan Sausage

Besides having their Basmati Rice, one can also opt for other sets with noodles / Kway teow base. We had Set 4 of $3.80 which included a fried egg and piece of chicken wing.

Set 4 - $3.80 (Not Inclusive of Otah)

For Set 5, you get fish cake, luncheon meat and fried egg. We topped up our set with Otah at an additional Cost.
Set 5 - $3.60 (Not Inclusive of Otah)

We will be patronising again.

The taste of the soup was indeed addictive in its spicy and sour notes. It left us wanting for more.

Refillable Soup

The biggest prawns among the rest and the star in the hotpot! The meat was succulent and springy.

Big Prawn

We enjoyed the Thai-style steamed Seabass with lemon. The dish is light and flavourful, featuring the natural taste of the fish. The meat was delicate and was well soaked in the seasoning with the right amount of spice as well as garlic.

Thai Steam Seabass with Lemon - $29.90

Their Moo Ping was juicy and tasted sweet in its marinade. Meat was springy and tasted awesome.

We ordered the most popular and flavourful street food in Thailand, Thai Grilled Pork Neck. It was marinated and paired with sweet sauce. It would be better if it tasted more smokey.
