Mixue in Batam

We took notice of Mixue while heading towards our lunch place just a few doors away at Rumah Makan Irama. To be honest, I had never gotten the chance to try them out in Singapore. Despite the long queue, we joined it to grab something cold just to beat the scorching hot weather outside.

Mixue

I quickly made a choice from their new menu featuring Chocolate ice cream. We waited quite a while for orders to be ready as it was really crowded.

Favourite & New

Yeah! This is my first try in Mixue.

Boba Chocolate Sundae - 16k rupiah

The chocolate Sundae was good enough to cool me down on a hot day. Overall the texture of the ice cream was good and not too creamy. Most importantly, the sweetness level is suitable.

Beauty Malatang 烫一烫美人麻辣烫 [Media Invite]

Walking into the back alley of Sim Lim Square with past memories flashing into my mind, I can never imagine this place has been transformed from being a place packed with computer shoppers to today where the whole stretch has become food places and spas.

Nonethless, we visited Beauty Malatang which is just located beside the popular Salted Egg Dishes place, Taste Good 好味小厨

Beauty Malatang

The place is cosy and located at Level 2. As soon as we settled down, there were increasing patrons coming in and soon it was full house.

Price of the items

Beauty Malatang offers all items at a fixed rate be it vegetables of meat, starting with a minimum of 300g to order with $2.88 priced at per 100g.

Step 1 - Pick your items here

First, we select our desired items from the above and then head to the counter and choose our soup base. For Spicy lovers, you can opt for their Signature Ma La Soup which is the soup version or even the non-soup version with their Mala Xiang Guo or Mala Sesame Pot.

Step 2 - Pick your base

For the non-spicy options, one can choose their Chicken Collagen Soup or Tomato Soup.

Step 3 - Weight the Items

The Signature Mala Soup Base was acceptable and went pretty went with the crunch items like potato, lotus, other vegetables etc. The spicy level

Signature Ma la Soup Base

Glad that their tomato soup base was rich and I added the Carrot Noodles to pair with my items selection. The Tomato flavours made the meal an appetizing one with its tangy and sweet flavours without being too cloying.

Tomato Soup Base

We spend close to $40 for 2 bowls of Malatang with 2 other drinks.  Malatang has been growing its popularity over the past few years and seems to be easily everywhere, now that if we are shopping in Sim Lim Square, Malatang lovers will be happy to enjoy their meal in the building itself.

Thank you Scale Micro Influencers for the invitation.

Old World (Toh Guan)

The entire coffee shop underwent a revamp sometime back and it was back in operation with more stalls in a brightly lit environment. There are a few new stalls as compared to previously and Old World still remains there luckily. We noticed that their menu had also expanded to other dishes, not just strictly to their popular Pork Ribs Soup and Fried Porridge.

Old World

Mee Tai Bak (Following the Menu) is always my favourite choice of noodles and while spotting this Malaysian-style dish on the menu, I had no hesitation to order it.

Buzzer

Upon receiving the notification on the buzzer, I hurried to the stall to collect my dish. Initially, I thought that the kitchen had made a mistake as I did not order Bee Hoon. It was then I realised that the dish was comprised of some Bee Hoon purposely.

Fried Hokkien Seafood Mee Tai Bak is packed full of sweet savoury dark sauce with a mixture of Mee Tai Bak & Bee Hoon topped with fragrant fried pork lard.  Prawns, vegetables and lean meat was part of the ingredients.

Fried Hokkien Seafood Mee Tai Bak 炒福建海鲜老鼠粉 - $6

Pork knuckle was well braised to tenderness and had hints of soy sauce taste. The meal comes with pickled vegetables and a sunny side-up egg and broccoli.

Pork Knuckle Rice 猪脚饭 - $6

The meat disintegrates easily with some pull and is totally yummy.

Tender Pork Knuckle

The broth is as flavourful as before with a variety of pork organs like liver, stomach, lean meat, intestines, meat ball etc. The appetizing and hearty soup is irresistible.

Mixed Pig's Organ Soup 猪杂汤 - $4.50

These fried intestines were deep-fried and crispy in their bite-size form. Their standard and quality still remain as per our last order of similar dish.

Fried Large Intestine 炸大肠 - $6.50

Looks like the dining pal did not have the craving fix with this bowl of Fried Porridge! The fried porridge was indeed lacklustre. Something was missing from the savoury and flavourful taste we used to have. The bowl of porridge was term disappointing without the "Wok Hei" and tasted ordinary like our usual porridge.

Mixed Pig's Organ Fried Porridge 猪杂炒粥 - $6

If you love soup dishes with rice, their Pork and oyster Rice Soup is a good choice too. The oysters were fleshy and yummy with minced meat and lean meat making up the dish. It was something similar to Teochew Fish Porridge or Poached Rice aka "Pao Fan". As a soup lover, this dish has passed my tastebuds.

Pork & Oysters Rice Soup 猪肉生蚝饭汤 - $6.80

Having tried some of their new dishes, I'm quite glad that I have enjoyed them.

Barelang Seafood Restaurant

Going to Barelang Seafood Restaurant has always been in my mind for my visits to Batam but it was always "out of the way" for dinner and our packed itineraries. During the last round, we visited Rezeki Seafood Restaurant and yes finally, we had set foot here.

Barelang Seafood Restaurant

We did not make any reservations and as a first-timer there, we were impressed by the large-scale dining area. There was no electronic bells to call the server from a far distance. We either waved frantically to get their attention or simply walk all the way back to somewhere near the entrance if we need their service,

Dining Area

There were simply many seatings facing the sea and we chose the seat with a view of the Barelang bridge, hoping to get some shots of the blue hours.

View of Barelang Bridge

Ocean Blue! What a beautiful drink made of syrup with Nata De Coco and Chia Seeds.

We also had a Coconut Drink to cool ourselves amidst the hot weather.

We were not in the luck of ordering Lobster and Crayfish and were told sold out. We took the alternative to order their Butter Prawns. They were medium in size, similar to what we usually have from a basic bowl of prawn noodles.

Butter Fried Prawns

Having tried the Mantis Shrimp in Batam before, I was reminded of its tough shells and springy meat.
We ordered a plate of 3 pieces and opted for steaming cooking method. These shrimps were seasoned with soy sauce, chilli, garlic and ginger.

Udang Belalang Mantis Shrim 螳螂虾

The style of Petai was a culture shock to me. The stinky beans were generously accompanied by fried crispy Ikan Bilis and spicy chilli. There were simply too much spice and Fried Ikan Bills that we could not finish .

The salted egg fried crab was well coated but not as savory as compared to what we had in Singapore. Nonetheless, freshness of their seafood was assured.

I will be back for Lobster and Crayfish.

Marché Mövenpick Singapore (Vivocity)

I believe that Marché Mövenpick Singapore needs no introduction. This Swiss marketplace restaurant offers a wide selection of fresh and healthy products. If you enjoy the atmosphere where your food is being prepared or cooked in a warm and open kitchen, you will definitely enjoy the lively market there.

They pride themselves on honest, hand-prepared food made from fresh and local ingredients. Take a break and enjoy the moments when you see your food cook in front of your eyes.

Chicken Schnitzel is another classic dish of my favourite. It features the breaded fried chicken cutlet served with mashed potatoes and green salad. Completed with a squeeze of lemon juice over it.

Chicken Schnitzel - $19.90

Do not miss out on Marche's Rosti as it's a must-have and one of my dishes on the table for every visit without fail! The Rosti is done from scratch, from peeling and shredding the potato. We all love the crispy crust of the Original Swiss Rosti while having the inside soft and fluffy. We enjoyed the Rosti topped with sour cream and chicken cheese sausage.

Original Swiss Rosti & Chicken Cheese Sausage - $10.90 + $7.90

Their Mushroom soup is also one of my all-time favourites too. Pairing it with Garlic Bread gave you a very full and comforting fill. The bread was of a thick slice, tucked with some butter at the side of the plate.

Cream of Mushroom & Garlic Bread- $8.90 + $4.20

The Cream of Mushroom's texture is thick and creamy topped with croutons. I love the little mushroom bits and chunks from every scoop of my serving.

Mushroom Soup & Croutons

Filling up our protein quota with Grilled Ribeye Steak. Doneness by default for their steak will be medium. Take a look at the charred grill lines and the glistering top layer, does it make you drool a bit?

Grilled Ribeye Steak - $28.90

Dipping the steak into the brown sauce provided. It's simply delicious!

Steak Dripping with Sauce

Pairing the Ribeye Steak with an additional side order of Sauteed Mushrooms. These mushrooms were not only soft but well seasoned with some herbs which perfected their taste!

Sauteed Mushrooms - $6.90 (Add On)

Why does their Pizza taste better? Besides using their own recipe, it's all-natural. Natural homemade dough with an Ultra-Thin Crispy base topped with cheese and fresh herbs.

Truffle Mushroom Pizza - $27.90

True to its name, the Truffle Mushroom Pizza combines the earthy truffle flavours with sauteed mushrooms and packs a great indulgence. Our table was filled with a strong hint of truffle aroma and besides having tomato slices as a base, the generous amounts of mushrooms, cheese slices, rocket and grated cheese powder simply gave this classic a great twist.

Too heavy

There are many dishes to explore from their fresh market. We definitely would not just stop our visit here and we see more of it coming. Having said that, we were confident that their quality and standards will be good for they have given us good assurance over the years.

Keijometo

Have been hearing Keijometo for sometimes and it was always full house thus we did not manage to go in there after several attempts.

The concept and design of its interior throw a surprise to everyone who has first stepped into the cafe.

The Signage

Well,  looking at the facade, who would have thought that this place is a cafe?

Industrial Theme

The external compound and internal waiting area are done creatively. The entire space gave a mysterious feel and also unique for instagram.

Vending Machine?

With the purposely run-down & incomplete interior, it also gave us a feeling that the construction was abandoned.

Design

Another Section

At some point in time, it also gave me a feeling of being housed in the prison that we saw in the museum.

The atmosphere was bustling and noisy.

Dining Area

The food and beverages menu was quite limited. Since we were only hopping past here while waiting for dinner elsewhere, we ordered some Sandos for Tea.

We ordered the Tamago Sando.

Tamago - RM 18

Tamago was deep fried with a thin layer of golden brown crispy crust. Tamago was on a sweet and savoury side

Look at the thin layer of fried crust

The smoky flavours and the fluffy white bread gave us a reason to have more of it. Delicious.

Tamago

The range of beverages for their Matcha amazed me. The beverages were cooling and quite a fusion to incorporate fruits in them.

Lychee Matcha Iced Tea & Watermelon Matcha Latte - RM 14 & 15

We visited at off-peak hours during the weekend and the place is still very crowded. If you are looking for some light meals and matcha beverages, do give Keijometo a vist.

Legend Wanton Mee

Masterchef Singapore Season 1 finalist Aaron Wong is no stranger to the Singaporean food scene and he is the one behind this Legend Wanton Mee venture.

Legend Wanton Mee

We had the signature bowl of dry wanton mee at $5.50. We tossed the egg noodles in the sauce. Despite looking plain at first glance, I'm glad that the seasonings and fried pork lard had given flavour to it.

Wanton Mee - $5.50

Tender and completed with a hint of smokiness with a caramelised coating on its side.

Char Siew

Wanton was good, complimenting the well-seasoned noodles.
