Jaedang Samyan (Siam Square branch)

My pals had brought me to Jaedang Samyan in Siam Square when we were discussing street food for dinner. This is Michelin awarded in 2019 too.

Jaedang Samyan (Siam Square branch)

The environment was cosy and seatings are limited. Nonetheless, we manage to get ourselves a table in the midst of peak hours.

Dining Environment

The Thai herbal tea tasted something familiar but not exactly what we had in Singapore. It was not too sweet. After much discussion and "Googling", I finally learnt that this Thai Herbal tea is made up of Dried Bael Fruit.

The Grilled Pork Neck is another grilled food that I enjoyed from Thai Cuisine. Simply love the Chilli Sauce with peanuts and the fried garlic that topped the pork neck, elevating its taste.

Grilled Pork Neck - 129 Baht

While I'm getting used to my favourite dish "Larb Moo" aka Minced Pork Salad, my friends recommended this dish similar to the style but instead of having minced Pork, we had Grilled Pork Neck drenched with the minty and spicy sauce.

Spicy Grilled Pork Neck Salad with Herbs - 115 Baht

The spicy corn salad with salted egg was recommended on the menu. It was a mixture of corn kernels with long beans, tomatoes, shredded carrots and salted egg yolk. It's addictive and tasty.

Spicy Corn Salad with Salted Egg- 95 Baht

Here's the staple dish of Thai Cuisine, Somtum aka the Papaya Salad. Enjoy the spiciness of shredded papaya with crunchy peanuts in a mixture of their tangy and spicy sauce.

Thai Spicy Papaya Salad - 70 Baht

I'm not very used to spiciness and although we requested for a less spicy version, I still find that I could not match the local tastebuds. The Hot & Spicy Soup was appetizing with the meat easily fell off from the bone and ingredients just as Enoki Mushroom, Tomatoes etc. It's addictive but the spiciness was too much for my stomach to take.

Hot & Spicy Soup with Spare Ribs - 125 Baht

The Deep Fried Chicken Thigh was simply delicious. The skin was thin and crackling yummy while the meat was juicy and moist. Dipping them in the given sauce for an additional fiery kick,

Deep Fried Chicken Thigh - 109 Baht

While we often get to pair dishes with plain white rice in our country. I was kind of surprised the Thai do the pairing with Sticky Rice instead. The fragrant sticky rice was served wrapped in a transparent plastic sheet.

Sticky Rice - 20 Baht

While I mentioned that I would like to skip the rice, my Thai pals recommended me to tried out these Rice Noodles. It is smooth and silky, generally thinner than our Thick Bee Hoon.

Thank you Pals for making the arrangement for such a rare meetup. We will meet again.

Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodle (忠于原味云吞面)

Back to the place where I learnt what "不见天" (Literally Translated means Cannot See Sky) is during my visit in 2018 to Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodle (忠于原味云吞面). The Stall Business remains popular with its die-hard fans queuing patiently in front of the stall.

Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodle (忠于原味云吞面)

Besides the springy noodle tossed in fragrant soy sauce, the Char Siew was the star on the plate that made us return here.

Wanton Mee Premium - $7

The Char Siew is made from the Pork Arm Pit and every piece is well caramelised. The exterior appearance was glistering and slightly charred. You can see the distinct layer of fats and meat.

Glistering Char Siew

The bowl of Dumpling Soup was worth the money. Every piece of dumpling was plump and the ingredients were generous with a succulent bite from the prawn and not forgetting the refreshing crunchy chestnut bits.

Dumpling Soup - $4

We will be back again for its "不见天".

Cali Restaurant [Media Invitation]

Cali at Park Avenue Rochester is just beside Buonba Vista MRT Station, 2 min walk away diagonally from the MOE Building. They offer the bold, sophisticated flavours of the Southwest in a bright and airy setting.

Their environment was relaxed but not too informal, a perfect place for lunchtime business meetings, gatherings of family and friends, or even intimate nights out.

We had 2 Set Lunches, each with 3 courses

First Course

The daily creation with full-flavoured fresh ingredients blended with chef love - Tomato Soup. The tangy sweet taste couple with the crispy toasted garlic toast make the starting course so appetising.

Chef's Soup Creation

A good surprise with Pan Seared Tuna mixed with zucchini, capers and eggplant.

Sesame Pan Seared Tuna

Second Course

Mozzarella Lover Favourite Choice! The appearance could be disguised as baked rice/pasta.

Florentine Fish Fillet - $22

Enjoyed the outer layer of cheese with a little bit of Char. While sinking my spoon into my second course, the sea bass fish fillet is still tender and filled with moisture.

Digging further down, we enjoyed the baby spinach. The dish was such a good combination of garlic as well as bechamel sauce.

Spinach

Next up, the dining partner had the Cordon Bleu Chicken. The outer layer was packed of crisp, well-fried to perfection with bread crumbs. The boneless chicken leg and picnic ham were part of the Cordon Bleu Chicken. The dish was then paired with sides like sautéed vegetables and mashed potatoes.

Cordon Bleu Chicken - $22

Third Course

While we get to choose either desserts or beverages for the last course. Both of us chose Ice Lemon Tea to quench our thirst. The Lemon Tea was refreshing and tasted different from what we usually had.

Yuguo Curry Rice

The queue of the Curry Rice had always made me wonder whenever I passed by their stall. At a closer look into the stall, there were a variety of dishes available and service was considerably efficient. The aunty at this ABC Brickworks branch was friendly.

Yuguo Curry Rice

When I wanted to ask for sharing dishes, I was told they are only selling individual portions. I opted for a curry with potatoes, tomato egg and a big minced meatball. Curry was not too spicy and the portion was more than what I had expected. Another good thing is that you can self-help with the free egg-drop soup available at the counter.

My Order

The staple ingredient that none of us should go without will be the Hainanese Pork Cutlet. It was dark brown in colour and decent with its biscuit texture. We had braised cabbages and fried eggs on the plate.

My Order

Overall, I find that Yuguo Curry Rice is pretty decent. Though it is not the typical Hainanese Curry Rice, I will still recommend it to those who love Hainanese Curry Rice with generous portions and at an affordable price of less than $10 for two plates above.

Dan's Steaks (Greenwood)

After a good experience with Dan's Steaks in The Star Vista, I have decided to visit their other outlet located in Greenwood. Considering a Friday evening, the restaurant was pretty quiet. The environment was cozy and comfortable with its furnishing as well as lighting.

Dan's Steaks (Greenwood)

The crab cakes were crispy on the outside and looked darker in brown. These Cakes were yummy with crab chunks and cajun spices, paired with gherkin aioli.

Dungeness Crab Cakes - $24

Besides have the Dungeness Crab Cakes, we had the Sous Vide Pan Seared Octopus. The Octopus was delicious with silky mashed potatoes as a side and accompanied by mint pineapple salsa.

Sous Vide Pan Seared Octopus - $28

The NZ Fillet Mignon was perfectly done with Gorgonzola cream sauce and herb butter. Mignon was juicy and tender. I paired the House Cut with Pan-Roasted Asparagus. Simply love the white wine, shallot and garlic on the greens.

NZ Fillet Mignon 260g - $43

NZ Riverlands Black Angus Ribeye came with Red Wine bordelaise sauce. It was paired with Pan Roasted Mushrooms. This side bowl contains Trio of Mushroom with white wine, balsamic and garlic.

NZ Riverlands Black Angus Ribeye 280g - $42

The Environment and food quality are up to par. I do not mind visiting the other branches in Maju Ave or Upper East Coast Road too.

Tiong Bahru Lor Mee 中峇鲁卤面

When we talk about Tiong Bahru Food Centre, there are always a list of Stalls not to be missed out in our minds and one of them is none other than this Tiong Bahru Lor Mee. Many swear that its the best Lor Mee in town and during a weekend as early as 7am, we already notice a long queue lining up for their noodles.

Lor Mee Stall

Their Lor Mee comes in 3 sizes, Small, Medium & Big, from $3.50 to $5.50. The braised sauce texture was not too starchy and the portion was of good amount. The ingredients they had were fried fish nuggets, fried Wanton, braised egg and braised pork.

Lor Mee - $3.50 (Small)

The fish was battered and fried, soaked in the braised Gravy. Overall, I find that Tiong Bahru Lor Mee still lives up to its name.

WAWA LALA Bee Hoon

I first know of WAWA LALA Bee Hoon during the covid period where we can only order food online. I was impressed by the quality of food during then. I'm quite excited when I heard that they are located at Margaret Drive which is a stone's throw away from the Queenstown MRT station.

WaWa Lala Bee Hoon

WaWa's Lala and Cockles are daily imported and kept live in their self-built clam aquarium before going into the kitchen. They are fresh and naturally sand-less.

Dining Area & Serving counter.

Fred not if you are bringing young diners aged 12 and below who do not eat clams or cockles. WAWA also do offer the Grilled Chicken Kids Pasta.

Grilled Chicken Kids Pasta - $6.90

Let's start by ordering all their dishes on the menu! The refreshing clam soup noodles were good and reminded me of the natural sweetness of the Clams. You can opt to have Rice or glass noodle, and if you want to have it plain, you can order just the soup without noodles.

Refreshing Clam Soup Noodles 招牌正宗米酒啦啦粉 - $8.90

If you are a fan of Lala with Chinese Wine, you may want to pick this. The clear soup was strongly infused with Chinese wine and a Signature on their menu. You can choose either rice or glass noodle.

Authentic Clam Noodles with Chinese Wine - $8.90

Fresh Clam

"Si Hum" aka Cockles Fans wanted! These Teochew Style Marinated live Cockles were fresh and juicy. WaWa team handpick them, half-boiled and manually half-shells them to ensure that they are easy for the consumers to devour. WAWA Special Sauce complements the natural sweetness of the cockles with an umami-packed flavour in every bite. Enjoy the tangy and a tad spicy treat!

Besides having Fresh Cockles Marinated in WAWA Special Sauce, you may want to devour these Cockles with the powerful sambal sauce.

Power Sambal Cockles 特制叁巴辣椒啦啦- $8.90

Next up, the Chef also recommends these Fresh Clams in Signature Homemade Garlic Butter Sauce.

Fresh Clams in Signature Homemade Garlic Butter Sauce - $8.90

Vongole Pasta is one of my all-time favourites on the Pasta Menu in any restaurant. The Spaghetti is creamy and the texture was not too soft.

Spaghetti Vongole - $10.90

How about giving Sambal Clams another variation, with Lala instead of cockles?

Power Sambal Clams 特制叁巴辣椒啦啦 - $8.90

We can taste the clams' freshness even in the robust sambal sauce.

LaLa

While the menu has noodles and pasta, they also have a dish with rice. If you want to go something with the power sambal clams, they have it paired with fragrant tasty rice.

Power Sambal Clams with Tasty Rice 特制叁巴辣椒啦啦配香味菜饭 - $10.90

Last but not least, we ordered 3 of the sides on their menu. Fresh Clam Chawanmushi was smooth but it can be better with a stronger clam taste. The garlic butter toast reminded me of a childhood snack and it paired well with the garlic butter sauce. The spicy Buffalo Drumlets were not too bad and were not overly spicy.
