Sen Sen Sushi

What's with the long queue outside Don Don Doki recently? Well, Don Don Donki had recently launched Sen Sen Sushi in JEM on 28 July 2023 and it's drawing lots of attention.

The queue of Sen Sen Sushi

This Japanese Supermarket has continued to gain popularity among consumers not only by providing accessibility to a huge variety of Japanese items, snacks, bentos etc. A peek into the restaurant had already given us a comfortable feel with its warm wood interior design. Besides sitting beside the conveyor belt, you can also choose areas without the conveyor belt.

Environment

Looking through the glass panels outside Sen Sen, we get to see Staff carrying out the cuts on the fish.

Staff on Job

No doubt that they are only a few days into the operation, but I'm quite impressed by the efficiency from the food served to their customer service.

For orders that we had placed, it will be served through the high-speed conveyor belt system through the miniature "Shinkansen" aka High-Speed Rail. Dining time is limited to 60 minutes per table.

High-Speed Conveyor Belt System

A good mixture in the Oishi Sushi Set. It comprised Salmon, Shrimp, Conger Eel and Pickled Mackerel. The delectable pieces of sushi were all complemented by the vinegary sushi rice.

Oishi Sushi Set 箱寿司拼盘 - $6.80

I'm still game about Sword Fish and was impressed that diners were given sealed fresh grated wasabi to dip their sushi.

Sword Fish - $2.80 & Tamago Yaki - $2.50

The tempura was light on the palettes and was not too greasy. Assortment includes Shrimp, Squid, Crab Stick, Mushroom and lady finger.

Assorted Tempura - $9.80

One of the must-try will be their Sukiyaki Style Seared Wagyu. Love the tenderness of the meat. The rice of the sushi was compact and regular in rectangular shape.

Sukiyaki Style Seared Wagyu - $5.80, Seared Scallop - $3.50, Seared Tamago Mentai - $3.50

Chuka Hotate - $2.80, Shrimp - $2.80, Inari - $2.50, Eel $2.80

Littleneck Clam Miso Soup was tasty and those 6 clams were chewy. The soybean-based soup was not too salty.

Littleneck Clam Miso Soup - $2.80

This reminds me of the Mille Crepe we purchased from DDD (Don Don Doki) Supermarket. The Mille Crepe was decent and the alternating layers of crepe with cream were good enough for us.

Tiramisu Mille Crepe - $3.80

Dig our spoons into the wobbly hot cup of Chawanmushi and we found scallops, mushrooms, crab sticks as well as edamame!

Japanese Steamed Egg - $2.80

If you are going for quality over quality Sushi, Sen Sen Sushi will be the choice and comparable to Sushiro in my opinion. However, Genki Sushi will still be my top preference among the conveyor belt sushi eateries.

We waited for 45 minutes in the crowd for a table. What's the conclusion? I won't mind revisiting again but given a shorter waiting time.

Er Gu Tang Shui 二姑糖水

We were back here again for some traditional desserts.

Not many places will have this on their dessert menu. The Peanut Paste was reminiscent of my childhood. The paste was not overpowering and reversely, very addictive to me for its fragrance and consistency of the smooth texture.

I was longing to have a taste of the kind of Red Bean Paste that was served during the last dish at a wedding dinner. This bowl of Red Bean Paste was close but a less sweet version

Er Gu Tang Shui used to be an iconic Dessert Store in Chinatown night market back in the 50s. Chinatown’s night market ended on 30 September 1983 and the stalls were relocated to Chinatown complex market.

“Er Gu Tang Shui” was one of the pioneers to follow the relocation to the Chinatown complex.

It's not my usual to order green bean soup from a dessert stall as this bowl of dessert is easily cooked at home. I was curious about the ingredient "Chou Cao" and decided to give this a try. The substance was said to cool down the body system. Green bean soup was neither sweet nor too bland to taste.

The style of their dessert was mild sweet I realised. Gingko Nut Barley was cooked to soften with mini pieces of beancurd skin. The combination is common but the taste was bland as I prefer a stronger taste.

The almond paste was smooth and if you are an almond lover, you will love this. We have added some glutinous rice balls in the paste at an additional cost too.

I guess everyone was talking about Er Gu's black sesame paste. I will be very keen to try it on a return trip.

Rong Ji Hong Kong Soup 荣记香港老火汤

While most of the time visiting this coffee shop lands us in having our meals with Chiang Mai Kitchen, we decided to check out its neighbouring stall for some Hong Kong Casserole Dishes. The dishes on the menu are plenty that we are simply spoilt for choices. They have the Staples Hong Kong Soup Dishes as well as those day-to-day dishes that can be prepared by our mums or granny.

Stall of Rong Ji Hong Kong Soup

For those who do not mind bitter gourd dishes, this dish brings out the sweetness together with the stewed pork ribs.

Stewed Pork Ribs with Bittergourd in Casserole 砂锅苦瓜焖排骨 - $8

The brinjal was cooked to softened and went quite well with some minced meat as well as the accompanying sweet sauce.

Braised Brinjals 红烧茄子 - $8

The texture of of liver was just right enough, it was soft and not on the tough side.  The use of ginger in this sauce had kind of reduce the innards gamey taste. I love the sauce to go on my white rice.

Pig's Liver in Casserole 砂锅猪肝 - $6

There are soup dishes too. This Watercress & Carrot with Pork Ribs Soup tasted so home cooked. Enjoy this superfood which is packed of alot of nutrients and helps to promote healthy bones.

Watercress & Carrot with Pork Ribs Soup 西洋菜红萝卜排骨汤 - $4.80

The non oily version of Sesame Chicken. I could not resist to praise their food further for such dish tasted so at home. The chicken was braised in the sweet sesame fragrant sauce with mushrooms. This is also good to pair with a bowl of white rice.

Sesame Chicken in Casserole 砂锅麻油鸡翅 - $5

The Vinegar Pig Trotter is well known as a confinement dish and its nourishing benefits. Not many places would have served such dishes and this pig trotter dish is simply good with its sauce and the tender trotter meat.

Hong Kong Style Vinegar Pig's Trotter 香港猪脚醋 - $6

The use of fermented beancurd among the assorted vegetables gave a good flashback to those days when we used to have simple home-cooked meals. The vegetables made the gravy sweet with the fermented beancurd and yes, they went so well with the rice.

Assorted Vegetables with Fermented Beancurd 南乳什菜 - $6

I'm super impressed by the woman behind the wok for she can prepare so many varieties of dishes within a short time frame. Not only that every dish she prepared and cooked was so homely in taste. I will be back again for other dishes on the menu.

Chiang Mai Thai Kitchen

When the food is good, there will be definitely return trips to the stall. Besides having white rice to pair with the curries, we ordered their Thai Style Seafood Fried Rice. The Fried Rice was not only packed with egg fragrance but also the Wok Taste within. Even having this place of Fried Rice is good enough if I do not have any sides to pair with.

Thai Style Seafood Fried Rice - $6.50

Yellow Curry Chicken was sweet tasting and the ingredients were generous. Thai Brinjal, Carrot, Green Beans, potatoes and a handful of chicken meat were included. They are best to go with a plate of fragrant white rice.

Yellow Curry Chicken - $6

Tom Yum Seafood Soup can never be left out whenever we have some stomach space in the meal. The lemon grass fragrance was addictive and seafood such as fish, prawns and squid were added.

Tom Yum Seafood Soup - $6.50

The Stir Fried Kai Lan Crispy Pork was a perfect match to our plate of rice. The Wok Fried taste and the savoury taste were something we were all looking for. Large pieces of Crispy Pork were Stir-Fried together with Kailan, chilli and mushrooms.

While I was craving for some authentic Thai Food, I made a return visit to the Chiang Mai Thai Kitchen and ordered their Jade Noodle. The style of dish was similar to Stir-Fried Basil Pork Rice with fried Egg just that the rice was replaced by the Green Noodles.

Taste was decent and matches me for I'm a supporter for Basil pork dishes. Perhaps the only pet peeves was that it tasted a little on a spicier side for me.

While in the search of food for dinner, we landed ourselves up in this coffee shop hoping to have some slurps of ramen soup. However, it was a letdown as the shutter for the stall was closed. We seek an alternative stall in the same coffee shop and was contemplating between Thai or Chinese Food. Our choice was pretty obvious when we see the long queue lining up in front of the Thai Stall.

The variety of food items on the menu and the intermittent clanging of woks and pans from the kitchen excites me. From the communication through the Kitchen, we heard some local Thais talking and this has given patrons more confidence in the food.

The Thai Green Curry Chicken was not only fragrant but addictive. Ingredients were generous and this big bowl of Green Curry is best to go with a bowl of rice.

The Moo Ping comes in a plate of 5. It may be kind of tough to share if you are in a group of 2. Each skewer was coated in sauce thoroughly and was very tasty.

Dabbing this stick into the chilli is definitely the best way to enjoy.

The Omelette Crab Meat Fried Rice was above my expectation. The food was served on an old school metal plate and grease paper. Egg Omelette was both creamy and runny topped with a handful of crab meat chunks. Cucumber slices and cherry tomatoes are tucked by the side of the rice.

The fried rice was fragrant and packed with hints of "Wok Hey". The rice definitely goes well with the crab meat and egg. Instead of just plain fried rice, they do offer crab Omelette Meat with Basil rice too.

With limited stomach space, it would not be a surprise to be back again for other dishes.

Hong Kee Satay Bee Hoon 宏记潮州沙爹米粉

A revisit to this stall by luck as we were not very sure of their opening hours. It's time to try out their Statay Bee Hoon! The peanut sauce over the portion of Satay Bee Hoon was flavourful and tasted to my liking.

Satay Bee Hoon - $4.50

The combo Laksa is also one of my favourite choice from Hong Kee's Menu. What an indulgence of having Steamed Chicken and Prawns in the bowl of Yummy Laksa.

Combo Laksa 霸王加沙- $6

Posted on 10th April 2022

I knew of Hong Kee Satay Bee Hoon when one of the colleagues introduced us to their laksa that has poached chicken included. Yes, you didn't read wrongly, we are referring to Laksa despite the that the stall was named for Satay Bee Hoon.

Stall of Hong Ji Cao Zhou Sa Die Mi Fen

I was looking for the stall that sells Laksa a number of times but it was closed during my searches. Perhaps the stall was underrated as there were not many reviews left on Google.

They have a variation of Laksa to offer, Cockles Laksa, Steamed Chicken Laksa and Combo Laksa. We had the combo Laksa of course.

Combo Laksa 霸王加沙- $6

Combo Laksa costs $6 and it's really worth the price paying for as they have fresh cockles, Prawns, Fish Cakes, Tau Pok and Poached Chicken.

All In Laksa

The Laksa is approved! With a creamy texture and a well-balanced amount of spice and the smooth poached chicken absorbs the aromatic Laksa gravy.

Poached Chicken

I'm quite impressed by the savoury laksa and the smooth texture of the poached chicken for the combination of ingredients in the given bowl had brought satisfaction to my tummy.

Smooth Texture

Besides having Laksa, I do not mind returning to this stall again for other dishes like Prawn noodles and Satay Bee Hoon.

Lin Yu Mei Sarawak Laksa & Kolo Mee

We see many food stalls getting commercialised and branching out nowadays, including Lin Yu Mei's Sarawak Kolo Mee. Having known of this popular "branding" from their original stall in Haig Road, I'm keen to try out their Kolo Mee.

Lin Yu Mei

There are 4 versions of Kolo Mee to choose from, the original, with black sauce, with red sauce or with soup base. The taste was decent loaded with minced meat and condiments.

Original Sarawak Kolo Mee - $5.50 (Big)

The Red Sauce Version of Sarawak Kolo mee was beyond my liking as the sauce was simply too sweet. No doubt that the ingredients like minced pork were fragrant with shallot oil, but the dish as overall left me disappointed.

Sarawak Kolo Mee with Red Sauce - $4.50 (Small)

Pieces of Char Siew were lean and not too oily.

While brands like this branch out their stalls, I wonder if the taste consistency is being maintained.

Fountain Microbrewery

Many of my pals who has been residing in Jurong East vicinity was quite surprised when I mentioned about Fountain Microbrewery in Snow City when I suggested this as one of the places to chill out after a day's of work.

Environment
Environment

We were there on a weekday evenings and the place was rather quiet to our liking.

Making use of Halibut's fillet and tastily battered in their own craft beer, it makes a difference on their dish compared to other places. The dish was served with Tartar sauce and Coleslaw.

For the mocktails, we had the Ocean Breeze that was a mixture of Coconut, fresh lemon juice, strawberry puree, blue curacoa syrup with sprite.

Surprisingly the Vongole Pasta had whet my appetite for more. Spaghetti texture was al dente. They were cooked in lime juice, chilli flakes, garlic  and flamed with white wine.

If you are bringing kids there, they are not forgotten. There are a few menu selection for them and we had the Kid's Fish & Chips. The Fishes were lightly battered and fried to golden brown, this meal was served with a dollop of coleslaw and fries.

Kid's Fish and Chips - $17

There are a variety of Craft Beer on their menu, 10 in fact. Each pint (435ml) costs $14 and all were brewed in-house.

The Deep Soul IPA was strong and flavourful, definitely a hop-lovers dream.

The Golden Ale was full bodied with subtle fruity taste and not that complex or bitter.

The Blood Line Cherry gave a cherry hint with a marvelous after taste.

While we were here for some drinks and bites, we decided to have their recommended Fountain Platter for sharing topping up with a portion of coleslaw. The platter consist of a medley of grilled pork shabu shabu, fish bites, BBQ Pork Ribs served with mesclun salad tossed in classic balsamic vinegar and fries.

These crispy and delicious chicken wings were well fried and served with their secrete recipe home made BBQ sauce.

The last sharing bites we had on the table pairing our glasses of beer will be the baby squid. Not many places served this and these baby squid were deeply fried into golden brown in colour and served with mayonnaise sauce.

Price of food was on a steep side. Nonetheless, if you are looking for an environment that is away from the Shopping Malls, this can be a good choice. On top of that, they do have live band performances on some evenings in the week.
