Restoran Yit Foh

I had the slightest memory of visiting Restoran Yit Foh until my friend recommended his favourite Wanton Mee in JB this year which made me browse back to my Wanton Mee posts in JB.

The menu was rather clear and well-illustrated in which we took our orders in no time.

Restaurant Yit Foh was furnished with simple chairs and tables just like a typical Chinese run coffeeshop.

With the unsparing heat from the weather, the Ice Jelly Lime Honey as well as the ice cool 100 plus aids in quenching my thirst.

Here's our order for the day! The plate of noodles in the orange plate is actually less spicy. Nonetheless, I find that in JB, even though we order a less spicy version, the dish is still spicy.

Our Orders

We ordered a small plate of Dry Wanton that contains 10 pieces and share it among ourselves. These Wantons were loaded in dark sauce, fragrant oil, spring onions and chilli.

Wanton (Dry) 干捞云吞 - 10 Pcs - RM 4

While the prominent items on the plate looked pale and unappetizing, I was thinking what could be the reason that they are drawing people's recommendations.  Thinly sliced Char Siew was lacklustre with egg noodles and a few stocks of vegetables. We were given 4 Wantons in a small bowl of soups and they tasted decent. My peers share the same sentiments too.

Wanton Noodles (Dry) - RM 7

Why was it rated good in the media after so many years still? Beats me, perhaps their style of WTM is not to my liking.

Yi He Wanton Noodles 益和云吞面 (Restoran Yit Foh) is just a stone throw away from the popular mall KSL City and known for  its well established brand name. Located in the streets where alot of eateries are situated, Yit Foh stands up uniquely on its on compared to its competitors like Pontian Wanton Noodles.

Restoran Yit Foh

They have classified as one of the local's favourite Wanton mee in the JB vicinity.

Stall Front
Have some starters while waiting for the noodles to be served. This fried Tau Ki were hot from the oil pot and was indeed very crunchy, not that oily as i had expected. They are best served with some chilli sauce.

Fried Tau Ki - RM 1.50
Feel the difference in the wanton mee with the whole egg noodle made from their own factory using their traditional recipe. These noodles were a vast difference from the noodle "Mee Kia" we had in SG. They were firmed yet springy with generous amount of sauce accompanied which make them smooth and irresistible.

The only let down I found was its Char Siew - they were like paper thin and probably, if they were thicker in size would have given a better impact from the bites.

Small Wanton Mee - RM 4.50

Dont forget the wantons! Order them separately if you find that what comes in your meal were just too less. These little wantons were the smoothest I had eaten so far these years. Although it was small with little fillings, they have a different texture as compared to the normal ball of minced meat we had in most wantons but theirs was like effortless in biting and slides down the throat easily.

We had ordered the big portion of the wanton mee. Ingredients as well as the noodles were all "upsized"!

Wanton Mee (Big) - RM 5.5

Can you spot the difference? Which is the Big and which is the small portion?

For Singaporeans who get tired of the mall's food in KSL Shopping mall, try walking along the food streets nearby. This is definitely a good try and pocket-saving.

Mama Diam

The name "Mama Diam" sounds close to any one of us that had been through that era around 1980s to 2000s whereby these small, family-run provision shops are often found under the blocks.

In this case, Mama Diam is speakeasy bar that sells local favourites with a modern twist.

Mama Diam

The facade and the outdoor surroundings dug up my memories of the days that we went around the neighbourhood exploring these convenience stalls under the HDB blocks. It is not easy that come to such shop locally nowadays and Mama Diam has nailed it. The decor was attention to detail and this is definitely worth a visit.

Outdoor Seating

While this culture seems to be dying off, we seldom get to see the kind of old-school HDB stools, vintage knick-knacks and traditional snacks nowadays. Mama Diam featured all these rustic charms that bring me back to the past.

Did the mural jog your memory too?

What happens behind the sliding door of Mama Diam was indeed another world. Who will imagine that a vintage and nostalgic facade will bring you into a totally different environment?

Bar Interior

Those who are here for a chill will be very much happy to have seen the bottles on the shelf.

Bar Counter

Even over at the bar counter, some of the things look familiar and nostalgic.

Bar Counter

I could not take my eyes away from this Condensed milk tin as it had so many memories. I ordered the Chai Tarik Brew that is served in that nostalgic Milk Tin Can and a piece of Biscoff. The drink is a mixture of naked malt whisky, butterscotch and pulled milk tea.

While in the background, we had the Sng Muay Fizz, a uniquely Singaporean favourite with a modern twist. It has fizzy, zesty and slightly salty. The drink is made up of Belvedere vodka, Aperol, Local plums, Orange Cordial and soda.

Chai Tarik Brew & Sng Muay Fizz - $18 each

It's one of the Chef Recommendations featuring their Emperor Herbal Chicken Poached Rice. The dish comes with glistering pan-seared chicken thigh, puffed wild rice, seasoned rice and fried egg floss topped off with fragrant herbal chicken broth.

Emperor Herbal Chicken Poached Rice - $18

Another noteworthy item from their menu features Claypot Asian Braised Beef Cheeks. The beef cheeks were fork tender, decked up by a bed of mashed potato, accompanied by carrots, broccoli, shimeji, mushroom, hoisin & five spice sauce.

Claypot Asian Braised Beef Cheeks - $25

For the small plates, we go for their Stuffed Seafood Lychee which is also the Chef's Recommendation. The portion is good for sharing and served individually in spoons.

Stuffed Seafood Lychee - $15

Lychee stuffed with finely chopped prawns was encased by a charcoal batter and topped off with citrus mayo and tobiko. Nice!

Lychee Inside

A very local way of executing this dish is with satay sauce, crushed peanuts, cucumber swirls and apple slices with Tofu puff stuffed with minced Iberico pork.

Stuffed Iberico Pork Tau Pork - $13

The name "Tak Kiu" sounds so familiar from a heartland coffee shop. We have the dessert made up of cheese cream, milo, condensed milk and chocolate wafer. Oreo bits, strawberries and blueberries were part of the plate.

Tak Kiu - $15

Sng Baos aka Ice Popsicles is something that cannot be missed out from my childhood fond memories. Priced at $0.10 during then, this is the many reasons why I will appear at the Mama Diam after playing around in the neighbourhood. These "Sng Baos" are complementary.

What's your favourite "Sng Bao" color?

Overall, I find that dishes on their menu are not the mainstream dishes we get out of most eateries. I believe that their menu will change from time to time and I hope to be back again for other surprises. Do remember to make reservations

db Bistro & Oyster Bar by Daniel Boulud

A call for a random meetup over a meal ended us up here at the French Bistro in Marina Bay Sands. db Bistro & Oyster Bar by Daniel Boulud is listed on MICHELIN Guide Singapore 2021 selection

db Bistro & Oyster Bar by Daniel Boulud

Just right in front of the entrance, you will get the see fresh seafood like oysters and lobster decked up by the ice through their refrigerator.

The centre island had a good array of alcoholic beverages. It seems like one will be spoilt of choices if you are there for the bar too.

Interior

The Interior was posh and up-class, brightly lited.

Dining Area

After ordering our express lunch (12pm to 3pm), we were served with an assortment of warm bread with butter.

Bread

Taking off from their Oysters Bar, we enjoyed ourselves with half a dozen of Singapore's Freshest Selection of Market Oysters.

Seasonal Oysters - $40

These freshly shucked oysters were served on a bed of ice with slices of lemon and some sauce to pair along.

Oysters

We decided to have a 3 courses express lunch each and my first course started off with Heirloom Tomatoes & Burrata. It was paired with Aged balsamic and basil pesto. The dish is refreshing and aids in stimulating our appetite before the main course is served.

Heirloom Tomatoes & Burrata

While my friend had her Pate En Croute which is made up of duck, pistachio, apricot, pickles and mustard.

pâté en croûte

Going into the 2nd Course and also the main courses. One of us ordered the Crispy Pork "Corden Bleu" out of the 6 selections. The execution of Corden Bleu was different from what I had in mind. It features Parisian Ham, Gruyère Cheese, Farm Eggs with perfect runny egg yolk and Sauce Mornay.

Crispy Pork "Corden Bleu"

Steak Haché comes with a farm egg drizzled with red wine shallot sauce, totally love the caramelised onions that was among the sauce. This main course is also back up by a bowl of Petite Salad.

In our last courses, we had the Assorted Ice Cream which is based on Chef's selection. We have Peanut Butter Ice Cream and refreshing strawberries Sorbet with 2 pieces of chewy chocolate chip cookies.

Sea Salt Caramel Ice Cream with Hot Chocolate

Molten Chocolate Cake

The unctuous molten lava was seen oozing out as we sink the knife down. What a good way to end our meal with a savoury treat.

Gone Rouge Brewing [Closed]

A handful of friends have been talking about this neighbourhood pub, a craft beer bar that makes its unique brews. Gone Rouge brewing is located inconspicuously at the back of Le Quest mall.

Gone Rogue Brewing

The dim light fixtures with simple furnishing make it a great spot for those staying nearby the Bukit Batok area to unwind and enjoy a few pints.

Interior of Gone Rouge Brewing

While we are here for some pints, let's cheer! They also have a mix-and-match with Four Taberna that allows you to sample a few beers that Gone Rogue's Brewing has on their tap. I guess I will want to try this out in the next round.

While my friend had the Dunkel, I had the Lychee Lassie, a medium-bodied with moderate carbonation of fruitiness with a refreshing hit of fresh lychee.

Promo - $35 (3 Pints)

No bar trip is completed without a glass of beer and some bar snacks. While the Lemongrass Chicken Wing was not available on that day (my friend was disappointed), we ordered the Miso Fish Fillet. These Crispy beer battered fish filled were glazed with miso and topped with Mayonnaise.

Miso Fish Fillet - $13.80

Thin Crusted Pizza is always my preference and this Yakitori Chicken is topped with spicy mayo, mozzarella, bbq diced chicken leg, onion and spring onions.

Yakitori Chicken - $18.50

Cheese Lover will not let this Pizza off if they see this on the menu. A mixture of 4 kinds of cheese, namely parmesan, mozzarella, cheddar and blue cheese. Are you ready for a slice?

4 Cheeses - $24.50

What a unique dish I thought. We were served with 3 slabs of crispy golden brown egg-battered pork chop slathered with their sweet cinnamon-apple sauce that is proudly made in-house. The dish was served with a hearty ratatouille.

Applesauce Glazed Pork Chop - $18.50

Well-executed marinated Roasted Chicken Leg was generously lavished with herbs and served with mixed vegetables coleslaw and homemade chilli sauce. If you love Herbs on Chicken Legs like me, you will like the texture and succulency of the chicken.

Roasted Chicken Leg with Herbs - $19

Let's support local! I don't mind going back again to chill out in the neighbourhood mall like this.
