Chunky Lobster

Having tried Luke's Lobster sometimes back in Orchard, my friends urged me to try out Chunky Lobsters in Orchard too as they feel that they do have one of the best lobster rolls too.

Chunky Lobster

Chunky Lobster has a wide selection of food from Starters, and sides to Mains. When we talk about Lobster, it excites me, let's dive into our orders now.

Menu of Chunky Lobster

The Interior was of nautical decor and looks like a rustic lobster shack of New England with wooden furnishings.

Chunky Lobster

The Lobster Bisque was served with mini Brioche Toast for dipping into the creamy bisque. The texture was a bit rough with a heady crustacean taste with hints of cream, onions and garlic.

Lobster Bisque - $10

Here's the reason why we were here for! The New Original Lobster Roll is so called a must-try. The huge chunks of Lobster Meat are sandwiched with a toasted brioche roll, with Mayo, Lemon, creamy Tarragon Sauce and sprinkled with chives. The lobster meat was fresh and succulent. These are North American Lobsters fished from sustainable fisheries in the cold, clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean

The New Original Lobster Roll - $31

The spaghetti was creamy with Truffle & garlic fragrance. This dish is served with a Lobster Tail and Potato string that was topped with Parmesan cheese.

Creamy Truffle Lobster Pasta - $35

Overall, in terms of Lobster Roll, I will prefer the toasted brioche bun to have a more buttery fragrance and crispiness.

Covent Garden Kway Chap

I notice Covent Garden Kway Chap stall sometime back when I was visiting Havelock Road Cooked Food Center for Meng Kee Fried Kway Teow 明记炒粿条 and learnt that Covent Garden Kway Chap is one of the popular stalls.

Covent Garden Kway Chap

We were there early in the morning and the queue has not formed yet. Uncle was friendly and asked if I wanted to customize my order.

Kway Chap Set for 2 - $6

I did not know what to order, therefore I ordered the default combination platter and asked for everything. The platter consists of preserved vegetables, fish cake, braised egg, skin, braised intestine and tau pok.

Ingredients

It felt stomach warming to slurp down a bowl of Kway in the morning. The soup for the Kway comes with a light braised taste added with a tad fragrant from the fried shallots.

Kway

The portion is priced at value-for-money pricing and the innards are very clean. Overall, the Kway Chap is decent and does not have any gamey aftertaste. For those who prefer to have a decent and hearty traditional Kway Chap at pocket-friendly pricing.

La Nonna

La Nonna which also means "Grandma" in Italian is a modern trattoria located in the heart of Holland village. The environment is unpretentious and the dishes are cooked as though Grandma would have cooked them. La Nonna is also known to serve hearty and good Italian food.

La Nonna

We were not familiar with Italian dishes and though the menu was relatively straightforward with no picture illustration, we tried to figure out the dishes' names with the elaborations on the menu.

Menu

As usual, we were greeted by complimentary bread from a typical Italian eating place with some balsamic vinegar and olive oil to pair along while waiting for our food to be served.

Complimentary Bread

My first try of Arancini. These deep-fried Risotto Balls were filled with Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese. The 3 balls were served creatively in a wooden board.

Arancini - $16

Take a look at the creamy melty Cheese within the balls. Dip these Bar Nibbles in Pomodoro Sauce to enjoy. The texture on the outside was a bit crunchy and it was served pipping hot. You will get the cheese-pulling effect as you pull these balls apart.

What's inside these deep-fried Risotto Balls?

Wow. I have been looking for a decent Pappardelle from many cafés and this had hit on the right spot. This handmade pasta is a splitting image of the Asian's Biang Biang Noodles which were being rolled into flat and wide strips.

Pappardelle Coda Di Bue - $28

These Homemade Pappardelle pasta with Oxtail ragout and rosemary totally made my day.  The portion was generous with an adequate amount of sauce. The meat was shredded and cooked to soften with a good consistency to coat the amount of pasta in the bowl.

Do you want a spoonful too?

The Pan-Grilled Pork Chop was served with Broccoli, mashed potatoes, olives, and cherry tomatoes. Pork Chop came with charred edges which tasted perfectly well with its juicy meat.

Maiale - $32

While having Italian cuisine, it's hard not to hit on their signature dessert like the tiramisu. It is a traditional Venetian Tiramisu, the texture was soft and layers alternated with Mascarpone cheese and lady fingers. It does not contain alcohol and a pet peeve is that the strongness of the cocoa powder may be way overpowering for my favourite dessert which leads to some bitterness.

Tiramisu
Tiramisu - $12

The wobbly eggless vanilla custard cream was served with fresh berries and coulis. I'm so satisfied with this classic.

Pannacotta
Pannacotta - $12

The homeliness of the cuisine was felt through the dish. Though the price may be considered pricey, their portion made justice to what we were paying for. It is hardly that we come across a good authentic Italian place like this. I don't mind looking into other items in the menu if I'm back here again.

Oranges

The intense fragrance of the Black Gold escapes as soon as we release the seal on the box. The smell from the box of 800g Black Gold was indeed overpowering the air. It kind of telling our senses that we should have them in our stomach ASAP.

Black Gold Mao Shan Wang

I was impressed by the freshness of the durian. Furthermore, the texture was smooth and creamy. The rich and luscious flesh was addictive.

Look at the texture of Black Gold

The seed of the Black Gold is small and totally worth it especially when they are going by weight.

Seed

The XO Durians box comprises durians in a lighter yellow colour. The species is a vast difference from the Black Gold. The fragrance was lighter and the texture was not as dense. It is smooth and delicate with a watery side outlook.

XO Durian

For those who prefers the not-so-creamy style of durian may want to have a bite on this.

Rong Guang BBQ [Media Invite] [Closed]

Rong Guang BBQ Seafood started its operations since 1985 and this is now run by the second generation owner Chef Joe Eng Boon Hor, also known as Botak Joe. He had took over the parents business in year 2000.

I remembered those times when Rong Guang used to be a popular choice for our gathering and meetups in the big compound near Sunset Way as well as in Alexandra Village Hawker Center. As years passed, they are no longer located at the same premises in the West.

Stall of Rong Guang

Nonetheless, Rong Guang's BBQ is still reputable in Singapore Food Context. They have won countless awards for their famous dishes and handmade sauces. Mr Joe also had his appearances on the media platform on television programs, newspapers and magazines.

What We Had

Their all time Signature Dish is none other than BBQ Sambal Stingray. The succulent and yummy Stingray was slathered by a layer of Sambal sauce and topped with some raw onions.

BBQ Sambal Stingray 烧烤魔鬼鱼 - $16

I enjoyed this dish by squeezing some lime juice over it and dipped them into the Chincalok (Shrimp Paste) sauce.

Addicted to Stingray

Rong Guang's Signature Wings are the spot on! The wings were fried to golden brown perfection, showing the crispiness on its skin yet retaining the juiciness of the meat. The marination had thoroughly permeated and use of tumeric in their wings had elevate the flavours too.

Rong Guang's Signature Wings 荣光招牌鸡翅膀 - $12

The wings had a good traditional old taste that reminds me of Chicken Wings from our school canteens back then.

Old School Taste Spotted!
Nostalgic!

Accompanying the dishes, we have Seafood Mee Goreng as carbs instead of white rice. The noodles were packed full of Wok Hei Flavours. The natural sweetness from the eggs in combination with the tangy taste from the tomato had make it appetising. On top of that, the use of chopped spring onions boost the color presentation of the dish.

The Seafood Mee Goreng may on a spicier side. Squeeze some lim juice over and enjoy it.

How about some Mouth Watering Mee Goreng?

Let's have some healthy greens! These scored perfect! The light and natural taste of the greens were empowered by the minced garlic.

Kai Lan 芥蓝

Mr Joe was friendly and welcoming. It's tough not to make a return especially when the food is good. I will be back for other dishes.

Thank you Rong Guang BBQ & Lao Niang Agency for the Invite.

Guang Fa Laksa

While this is one of the few popular stalls in Havelock Road Cooked Food Centre that many netizens raved about and mentioned that it's one of the best Laksa in Singapore, it's hard not to pay the stall a visit.

Stall of Guang Fa Laksa

Traditionally taste, the laksa gravy is thick and packed strong aroma. If you enjoy the traditional taste, savoury and fragrant of coconut milk, you will love this creamy & well-balanced taste. The bowl comes with a hard-boiled egg, cut fish cakes, Tau Pok as well as fresh blood cockles.

Laksa - $5 (Big)

It is not overwhelmingly spicy and the broth was rather addictive. Together with the springy thick white bee hoon and Tau Pok soaking up the goodness, it's quite hard not to polish up the bowl dry.

Ingredients of Laksa

If you are someone who prefers a stronger taste in Laksa, Guang Fa Laksa is definitely an underrated gem.

Xiao Ya Tou

What a quirky name for a restaurant I thought among the bustling nightlife of Duxton Hill. Xiao Ya Tou is a place is serving modern Asian cuisine with a naughty touch and had taken us by surprise.

Xiao Ya Tou

A walk into the restaurant made me feel as though I had entered a place for filming.

Interior

The restaurant is deep and as we walked through the array of lanterns, we felt as though we were greeted by the sight of South East Asian influence. The retro posters and the colourful hanging lanterns give a bit of both a mixture of modern and old-school touch.

Lanterns

Taking a look at the items displayed closely, there are many things of the past that did not get to see nowadays.

Wall and Posters

Near the kitchen

Just right next to the kitchen, you will find a neon sign of Xiao Ya Tou's KTV hostess-esque mascot.

Mascot of Xiao Ya Tou

Perhaps my most expensive bottle of Liang Teh purchased out of the medical hall. In spite of the high pricing we paid for, the drinks' concentration and taste are undoublty better than what we had outside.

XYT Liang Teh (Left) & Longan Red Dates Drink - $10 each

These Crispy Otah Otah Rolls are addictive and served hot. The thin exterior layer was crispy and Otah was encased in it. The texture of Otah fillings were soft which gave a good contrast with the crisp exterior. The rolls itself was addictive and paired with their white Achar and Tamarind Peanut Sauce, it's harder to resist popping one after another into my mouth.

Crispy Otah Otah Rolls 香脆乌达卷 - $15

Lobster Kueh Pie Tee comes in a plate of 4. It was seen that the cups that were cradling the ingredients were not the usual ones we had. It's more like fried Wanton skins. Nonetheless, the "cups" were very crispy and the fillings were refreshing with lobster, prawns, tobiko, fruits and Ikura. Come and indulge on these now!

Lobster Kueh Pie Tee - $24

The Crab Fried Rice was dished out in an old-school Chinese bowl. The fried rice was fragrant and whetted our appetite for more. The use of crispy XO shrimps, eggs, tobiko, corn and spring onions were part of this creation and not forgetting the chunky pieces of crab meat.

Crab Fried Rice - $28

With limited portions daily. our "kiasium" instinct of a Singaporean told us this is a must order. The roasted duck had a strong truffle perfume.

Truffle Roast Duck 松露烤鸭 - $32

The skin was roasted to crispy perfection and soaked in a pool of spiced duck sauce and adorn by some coriander cress.

Truffle Roast Duck

This is not your usual bowl of Hokkien Mee. It is made up of premium ingredients and packed of Wok Fried taste. You get to enjoy this local staple in a twist with Smoked Pancetta, eggs, scallops, octopus, clams, bean sprouts and garlic chives. Adding some spicy shrimp paste to this local delight will certainly give your tastebuds a firey kick.

XYT Hokkien Mee 小丫头福建下面 - $32

We were offered some sweet treats and their name cards after payment. What a sweet ending!

Treats after payment

XYT had transformed our local dishes into innovative dishes, adding a special touch to each. Our overall experience was above average no doubt that the price was a bit steep. It will be good for some special occasion and if you are willing to splurge on our local delights with a twist.
