Banh Mi Ba 8

While waiting in the coffee shop and passing by the Banh Mi stall, the friendly lady asked if we want to try out their Vietnamese Baguette. With the increasing number of Vietnamese Baguette stalls around us, I think it's time to give them a chance.

Stall of Banh Mi Ba 8

The stall keeper was jovial and started to introduce the staple dishes of their stall. Being quite new to Banh Mi, I ordered what she recommended.

Menu

The baguette was stuffed with ham, meat, and pork and then toasted in the toaster. She offered to send the order to my table in the coffeeshop. The Banh Mi was served in a paper bag together with a plate.

Banh Mi

The Baguette was toasted and warm. The crispy exterior and the pillowy soft texture inside make the experience so memorable. It looks as though having subway 6-inch bread but stuffed with Asian ingredients.

Ham, Meat, Pork Banh Mi - $5.80

Ingredients include meat floss, coriander, onions, ham and pieces of pork belly.

Half Section of the Banh Mi

After my favourite Vietnamese Pho restaurant closed down, I'm still on the search for a yummy Vietnamese Spring Roll. While some of the places served the spring rolls with sweet peanut sauce and some served with fish sauce and onions. If you were to ask me, I will prefer the former sauce to this.

Pork, Shrimp Spring Roll - $3.80

Rolls were made up of vermicelli, prawns and pork belly slices. The spring roll tastes refreshing but I still prefer peanut sauce to pair with these.

I will be back for their signature items soon.

Dona Manis Cake Shop

Dona Manis Cake Shop is an old-school cake shop that doles out delicious Banana Pies.  It is also one of the last few traditional bakeries in Singapore. Not only is the shop old school but they are also located in the first ever mall in Singapore that has air conditioning. Although Dona Manis is reputable, the shopkeepers are humble and friendly.

Dona Manis Cake Shop

Going all the way down to Katong for this and of course, we had ordered a box of it. If you are purchasing in pieces, there is no price difference compared to buying per box (10 pieces).

A box of Banana Pies - $30

Interestingly, this Banana Pie was far more than I have expected.  It is made up of a few layers and each layer holds an important component. The first bite was a good mix of fragrant buttery crumbly crust with the sweet banana and roasted almond toppings gave it an additional crunch. The tinge of coconut in the pie enhanced and balanced out the taste of the Banana Pie.

Now I finally understand why do people rate it as the Best Banana Pie in Singapore.

Banana Pie - $3 (Per Piece)

Another hot selling item will be their cream horn and we were lucky to grab the last 2 cream horns with rainbow rice.

Cream Horn - $2.50

The cream is light with rainbow rice attached to it. The pastry is flaky with each bite and fragrant, packing full of butter taste. The cream horn is not the soft type of pastries but the crunchy type.

Wow

Having term as the Best Singapore Banana Pie in Singapore, there is no doubt that they have many returning customers and die-hard fans. Their pies are selling like hot cakes and sold out easily. Do go down early before they get sold out.

Yong Ze Delights

While waiting for our food, we passed by Yong Ze Delights and decided to grab some bites as the waiting time for our porridge at the next stall is still long.

Stall of Yong Ze Delights

Out of the list of a number of traditional Chinese snacks Yong Ze Delights offered, we picked Glutinous Rice. The glutinous rice was decent and was more grainy. It was topped with roasted peanuts, chopped spring onions and fried shallots.

Weng Kiang Kee Porridge

Weng Kiang Kee Porridge was one of the Porridge highly raved online and while we are looking for porridge for our breakfast, we decided to give this a try. Though there is no physical queue in front of the stall, we were given a number tag after ordering and were told to wait about 30-45 minutes for our order.

Stall of Weng Kiang Kee Porridge

The plain bowl of porridge looked nothing much spectacular. The usual plain white porridge topped with spring onions, fried shallots and fried fritters was something more than I had expected. After stirring and mixing the egg into the porridge, I realised that there are many other ingredients below. Porridge has a good smooth consistency and is not watery at all.

Signature Porridge 招牌粥 - $4.50 + $0.50 (Egg)

The aftertaste of the egg and the porridge was rich and savoury. This bowl of hearty Signature Porridge comprises century egg, cuttlefish, lean meat, meatballs, liver and intestine. There was no gamey taste from the innards too.

The mixed Pig's organs porridge is a scaled-down version of the Signature Porridge with similar ingredients like liver, intestine, meatballs and fried fritters.

Mixed Pig's Organs Porridge 猪什内脏粥 - $4.50 + $0.50 (Egg)

Overall, I love the consistency and smoothness of the grains. Though tasty, it still lacks the wow factor that will give me every reason to be back there on purpose.

Ah Kong Wa Kuih 阿公碗粿

Wa Kuih is one of the rare traditional Chinese snacks we can find nowadays around us. Upon seeing this specialised traditional Hokkien food stall, we decided to give it a try.

Stall of Ah Kong Wa Kuih

The bowl of Wa Kuih (when literally translated from Hokkien means "Bowl Cake") was steamed in a metal bowl before transferring into the plastic container and served to the customer. It was topped with tasty brown sauce, minced garlic and chilli (optional).

Wa Kuih - $2.80

Wa Kuih is made up of rice flour with dried shrimp, fried shallot, and mushrooms and steamed to become a "cake". With the ingredients, its quite tasty, nonetheless the sauce and garlic enhanced its taste,

Wa Kuih with Brown Sauce

The Wa kuih has a smooth bouncy consistency and is firmer as compared to the Zhui Kueh we have.

Ingredients

They are open as early as 7.45am till sold out. Have you tried Wa Kuih yet? Do have a try before such a traditional snack disappears from my sight.

Wen Kang Ji Wanton Noodle 文康記

The popular Wanton Noodle, Wen Kang Ji is located at the same coffee shop as the crowd's favourite prawn noodle, Da Dong Prawn Noodles 大東蝦麵, adding new excitement to the list of eateries in Joo Chiat.

Fans of their first outlet in Golden Mile Food Centre will be glad that they have opened the 2nd joint here.

Though the size of the dumpling was not very big, it is still acceptable. The ingredients consist of black fungus, minced meat and prawn. The taste overall was not too bad.

Overall, there are many styles and types of Wanton Noodles around. If you prefer to focus more on Char Siew Meat than the Wantons, this style may suit you and you may want to try them out.

Yenly Yours Desserts

Yenly Yours is Thailand's No. 1 Mango Dessert Cafe with over 15 outlets in Bangkok currently. There are only 2 outlets in Singapore with the first in Suntec City Mall and the second outlet located in Ang Mo Kio Hub. I chanced by the corner one day while I was strolling in the mall and after the first try, it left me with a good impression of their dessert.

Yenly Yours

Yenly Yours has a cute mango mascot that carries the Thailand Signage with 2 palms pressed together.

We had the Mango Coconut Noodles Dessert whereby the savoury mango smoothie was topped with coconut meat stripes/noodles coupled with mango chunks and a scoop of Yenly Yours made mango Ice cream. I absolutely love the refreshing taste from this bowl of desssert.

Your Mango Coconut Noodles - $10.90

The bowl of Mango Coconut Milky with Pomelo was not too bad either. The savoury mango smoothie was topped with sago, pomelo,  mango chunks and a scoop of Yenly Yours made mango ice cream too.
Both desserts are gluten-free and organic.

While seats are limited, it can be quite stressful that people are standing around you, giving you unintended stress waiting for your seat.
