OK Zhen Hao Wei

While the sibling has been talking about the popular steamed fish all over these years, we finally managed to get a date here together. The stall is a family run business serving Cantonese home cooked delicacies.

OK Stall

Just like any other Cze Char Stall in the Hawker, the menu was clearly stated on the display board with specific pricing. However, some of the fish items are priced based on the season.

The Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves were decent and not too spicy for me.

Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves 叁芭番薯叶
Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves 叁芭番薯叶 - $6

The taste of the Steamed Chicken with Mushroom in Fermented Bean Sauce is rather strong here. The gravy coagulated over time as the dish cooled down. Having it paired with some white rice will be the best combination. Chopped chilli and spring onions were seen as garnishing to the dish.

Steamed Chicken with Mushroom in Fermented Bean Sauce 腐乳花菇鸡 - $8

The best dish of the night was this steamed seabass with bean sauce. It can be served either in the Hong Kong Steamed Style or The Bean Sauce Style. The fish was perfectly steam and its meat was still bouncy without losing the ideal texture. The fish is tasty and even without having it paired with a bowl of steamed rice, it is definitely fine for me.

Bean Sauce Steamed Seabass 鼓汁蒸金目鲈 - $25 (Seasonal Price)

Without a doubt, the price of food is reasonable here and the taste of fish is commendable. Making a return trip here for similar food can be foreseen.

Changi 樟宜

The stall was recommended by one of my friends for its Chee Cheong Fun (CCF) was quite tasty and unique on its own. This stall is tucked at the corner of the coffee shop serving some traditional local Kueh and snacks beside selling CCF,

Changi

The price of Chwee Kueh is clearly stated on the menu according to the pieces ordered. Like any other stall, the auntie will scoop up the Chwee Kueh from the aluminium cups followed by adding the aromatic "Chai Poh" aka preserved vegetables on top of these Kuehs. The chilli had hints of dried shrimp and goes pretty well with the Chai Poh and Chwee Kueh.

Chwee Kueh - $2.20 (4 Pcs)

The Chee Cheong Fun is smooth and silky, what makes it outstanding was the sweet sauce that was used. It complements the CCF rolls well and it is very different from those that we have pre-packed from supermarkets.

Chee Cheong Fun - $2.60

Once taking our order, the auntie will open the steamer and draw out the CCF and start cutting them into pieces, followed by adding the warm tasty sweet sauce over the CCF.

CCF

The CCF was sprinkled with a handful amount of sesame seeds, enhancing its taste and smell.

Chee Cheong Fun

No doubt that the CCF is tasty and different from other stalls, but the lady who manned the stall is rather temperamental. Although her stall is opened early in the morning, she may not want to serve her customer at a stated time. Well, but if you do visit at her correct mood/timing, she will start her business.

Ah Yee's Soon Kueh

Having passed by Tembeling Road a number of times and notice the existence of Ah Yee's Soon Kueh, it has always been tempting for me to try out their traditional Chinese snacks. It was a convenient time in the morning after our breakfast and we decided to grab some Kuehs before heading back home.

The Shophouse of Ah Yee's Soon Kueh

We behaved like some crazy tourists, hopping out of the vehicle, rushing into the shop, grabbing a few bags of Chinese Snacks out and literally "jumping" back into the car again.

The glutinous rice is fragrant with dried shrimp, braised mushrooms and the use of fried shallot. No doubt that it filled my stomach space quite fast, it seems like I simply cannot stop myself from having more help from this box.

Glutinous Rice 糯米饭 - $3.60

We bought the small box of the yam cake, the taste of the yam cake was decent.

Yam Cake 芋头糕 - $3.60

Spoonful of Cake

It's not quite often that we get to see white skin Peng Kueh. In fact, the mould of this Peng Kueh is different from the triangular one we used to have too. It was in a peach shape and moulded with the auspicious character that means longevity.

Peng Kueh 糯米饭粿 - $1.60

The skin is thin and the stuffing was packed with glutinous rice, mushroom and also the aromatic use of dried shrimp.

Peng Kueh

Pumpkin Cake was nice and showered with a handful of sesame seeds just like the yam cake.

Pumpkin Cake  南瓜糕 - $3.60

Since Soon Kueh has to do with the shop's name, we decided to grab a box of it at $1.60 each. A portion of the Soon Kueh was big and the skin of the Soon Kueh is thin, filled with a handful of ingredients within. The fillings comprised of bamboo shoots, dried shrimp, black fungus, turnips and carrots.

Soon Kueh 笋粿 - $1.60 each

It's always a practice to have our Soon Kueh accompanied by some sweet dark sauce. Tasty and not too bad.

Soon Kueh with Sweet Dark Sauce

Ah Yee offers quality and variety of traditional Chinese snacks that are made fresh. I do not mind making a repeat purchase if I'm around that corner again.

British Hainan

The cravings for Hainanese Food had brought us to this corner of a shophouse on Purvis Road. Though there are 3 outlets, Joo Chiat, Kallang and Purvis Road, the ladies prefer to visit the last location for they are more familiar with the surrounding.

British Hainan

Welcome to British Hainan

Dining Area

We ordered a jug of Lemon Grass Drink and share it among ourselves.

Lemon Grass Drink in Jug

As we walked into the restaurant, we were their first batch of customers on the day. The interior was decorated with some of the old school stuff that can be found in the era of my grandparents' time. The furnishing kind of depicts the olden traditional Chinese with the use of the round wooden table, some straw weaved food baskets, charcoal operated iron as well as some metal hotpot and Chinese pictures hanging on the wall. They do have some English decorations with the use of piano, and some old school English luggage.

Interior

Take a look at the decorations

The caramelised onion soup was drizzled with some cheese powder and served with a slice of garlic bread. The soup was tasty but it can be better with the use of real cheese that gives the "cheese pulling" effect.

Onion Soup 洋葱汤 - $8

Garlic Bread

The platter was served with 3 kinds of Sausage and some lettuce with pineapple, tomatoes and cucumber slices. The platter was not really to my liking as one of them has a strong gamey taste although a lot of herbs have been mixed within. On top of that, the sausage meat was too minced and do not have the kind of biting texture and was kind of mashy to me. As we feedback to the restaurant, we were told that their supplier might have changed the Sausage Recipe and they will also feedback to them.

English Pork Sausage and Bratwurst Platter 香肠拼盘 - $16

Sausages

This dish is da bomb! The portion can simply fit 2-3 pax as it is very stomach filling with 2 slices of bread and sauce. The meat was well braised till the point that the meat fell off from the bone easily. Its perhaps one of the best braised Lamb Shank I ever had. While every dish from British Hainan does not require the use of MSG, I would say that the taste was really up to the mark. The sweetness of the gravy was lip-smackingly good. Potatoes chunks, carrots and celery slices were part of the flavours too.

Braised Lamb Shank - $28.90

The Fish was lightly battered and dory fish was tender. However, the batter was quite plain and it can be improved with more seasonings. Nonetheless, overall this dish still score on average and was served with fresh greens and fries.

Fish and Chips 炸鱼 - $16.90

This is the classic dish that I will always order when it comes to Hainanese Food. Pork Chop was breaded and tender with a crispy exterior. Like any traditional Hainanese Recipe, the Pork Chop was served with the classic thickened tomato sauce with cut tomatoes and green peas. The dish is served along with french fries as a side. Glad that the sauce is not salty and makes a good pairing. Indeed their family recipe is based on their memory and tastebud.

Hainanese Pork Chop 海南猪扒 - $16.90

Pork Chop

While the ladies could not take their eyes always from this Ondeh Ondeh Cake in the Chiller, we decided to save some room for dessert. The cake was topped with coconut shavings and alternating sponge cake layers with some Gula Melaka Cream. Well, it was a bit dry and a letdown to the traditional Ondeh Ondeh Cake as it did not impress much.

Kuey Zhap Pig's Organ Soup

While enjoying some breakfast items from the neighbouring stalls (Geylang Laksa Prawn Noodle, Zheng Zeng Handmade Pau 真蒸手工包), I notice that this Kuey Zap Pig Organ Stall is also quite popular among the stallholders as the uncle dish out plates and bowls of food from his stall continuously.

Kuey Zhap Pig's Organ Soup

The uncle caught my attention for he was a steadfast worker. He serves from table to table and his speed of running and the sound produced by the braking with his rubber shoes.

The Kuey Zhap Set of 2 was value for money and the service rendered was definitely friendly, better than most of the stalls I visited.

Kuey Zhap for 2 - $10

The food items were nicely braised and comprised of pig's skin, intestine, braised egg, fishcakes and pork belly. Nonetheless, the intensity of the braised sauce was rather bland to my liking and lacking of that punch or herb makes me addicted.

Items on Plate

It's probably not the average kind of taste that I had expected. Of course, the good thing is that the innards were well processed and had no gamey taste.

Braised Intestines

As for the bowl of Kway, it was on the average side and the braised stock was more towards the bland side too.

Kway with Garnishings

If you were to ask if I will ever want to have it for breakfast, I will rather have the Laksa or Pau at the similar Coffeeshop.

Ze Ji Fishball Noodles

Most of you should know that I am never a fishball noodles fan but recently I discovered this hidden gem in the old school coffee shop. The arrangement and orientation of the stalls in the coffee shop totally remind me of Malaysia and the old school tiles on the flooring, it gives a nostalgic feel of the past.

Stall of Ze Ji Fishball Noodles

Ze Ji is housed in Choon Guan Coffeeshop and every day without fail, their fans will diligently queue up in front of the stall to enjoy the bowls of traditional fishballs noodle. I had my favourite Bee Tai Mak mixed with Chilli as well as Tomato Ketchup. The Noodles were tasty and topped with minced meat, beansprouts as well as some fresh spring onions.

Bee Tai Mak Dry - $4.50 (Medium)

While with the bowl of yellow noodles, it was skilfully cooked and the texture of the noodle was right.

Noodles Dry - $5.50 (Big)

Besides the noodle, what impressed me more was the bowl of tasty soup that was filled with lean meat, fishballs, fish dumpling and fishcakes.

How Many Kinds Can you Spot?

Ingredients of Soup

Fishballs were said to be made by the stall owners fresh daily and they wake up early in the morning daily to fry the fish cakes. With the quality and taste, even though I'm not a fan of fishball Noodles, I would say that I'm still pretty hooked on traditional dishes like this. Needless to say, I do not mind making a return trip here.
