Sin Heng Kee 新兴记

Over the years since the last visit in 2019, Sin Heng Kee is still one of my favourite porridge places to go. Comparing the previous picture where the picture was taken before the pandemic, the place was so packed over the weekends that people can hardly walk in between.

Nonetheless, with their reputation and delicious porridge, there is still a consistent crowd coming in.

Comparing the prices before, there was a hike of $1.50 on their Signature Porridge, however, the taste and consistency still remain.

The ingredients of the porridge are similar to what we have from the Signature Porridge, perhaps blessing out the fish slice and bits of century egg.

We added the Fried Fritters later on. It was freshly fried on the spot and goes very well with the porridge.

The pork livers are not overcooked and is of the right firmness even though it was immersed into the porridge for sometime.

We get to enjoy cuttlefish from the porridge we ordered too.

We had never expected that Sin Heng kee is so crowded during a Sunday morning. The entire place was swarmed with tables of families (We can see at least 2 generations in a family Nucleus) enjoying their Breakfast. This was my first visit and I don't think that this will be my last too for that I personally feel that this is the best congee that I ever had thus far. It was a challenge during a hot weekend as seats are limited and the waiting time is about 30 minutes time.

Ah ha! This is the secret tool to the bowls of thick gooey congee served! Hours in the boiling pot at the right consistency and you will achieve them!

If you want a bit of everything, it is best to order their Signature Porridge. Meatball, Century Egg, Egg, Intestine, sliced cuttlefish, pig's liver, sliced fish and sliced pork were all included under the bed of hot congee. Ingredients were tendered and well seasoned. On a side note, I can even taste a hint of herb from the Pig's intestine.

I love that the porridge is smooth, thick and gooey which you won't get shortchanged with them being too watery. Just break the egg yolk and mix it thoroughly.

With us being Century Eggs lovers, how can we miss such a good chance to order a place of it when most of them have it placed on their table? We do love preparing our own century egg with pickled ginger slices and their preparation with additional chilli and garlic had given us a good idea to pair them. Love that these all went well with the creamy yolk from the century eggs.

Their You Tiao is sold separately in a bag form and will come together with the order. I guess this is a side that one must order to complete the delicious bowl of congee.

Having congee in its takeaway form, I'm glad that they practice the use of foam box to contain the food instead of the common microwavable clear plastic containers. The food was still kept warm despite keeping for hours.

Mini Star (HK) Fermented Beancurd

We were travelling along Geylang Road after lunch and chanced by this Mini Star Fermented Beancurd shop. The Fermented Beancurd word had made me stop by as I had heard many talking about the stall in Geylang but I did not plan to visit the place. The stench was strong enough to make one in thinking that the drain somewhere is choked and needed attention.

Shop of Mini Star Fermented Beancurd

I hurried into the shop and ordered a portion of Fermented Beancurd for take away. The wait was about 5-8 minutes. Sweet sauce, chilli and pickles were packed separately.

Fermented Beancurd (2Pcs) 臭豆腐 (2个)- $4

In such case, it is easier as we can control the amount of spice and sweetness to savour down these 2 blocks of fermented beancurd.

Sauces and Pickles

The beancurd was deep-fried and the exterior comes with a light crisp with the interior soft and good to go with the sauces.

A block of Fried Beancurd

Though they served Hong Kong Dishes, they still manage to fix my Fermented Beancurd Cravings in Taiwan. If you are craving for Smelly Beancurd, do visit them.

Nana Original Thai Food

Nana Original Thai Food has been in Clementi for quite sometime. They offers thai dishes from Isaan, North, South and Central of Thailand. Their Salad variations are something that is laudable as they offer almost 20 varieties in their menu.

I love Moo Ping (BBQ Pork Skewers) as they are fragrant and coated with a sweet tasty sauce. The dish is good for sharing especially in groups however, I feel that they can offer a smaller portion for single or double diners.

The meat patty was tender and needless to say, yummy!

Tom Yum Seafood Soup was served in an earthen pot over the stove. The spiciness and sourish taste of the clear Tom Yum Soup was appetizing. Ingredients like lime leaves, prawns, lemon grass, tomatoes enoki mushrooms and other assorted seafood are included.

The dish name tells me that this creation has been created for the locals here than solely a Thai Dish.
There are two variations of the Belachan Fried Rice, you can order them with either Pork or Chicken.
The rice portion was large and it will be good for sharing if you are ordering other dishes. It is coupled with other ingredients like diced cucumber, bird eyes chilli, shredded fried egg, raw green beans and onion.

Belachan Fried Rice (Chicken)

Always wanted to try Crab Meat with fried rice and I could not help but order their scramble egg fried rice with prawns and crab meat. The fried rice is fragrant and topped with runy scrambled egg with some crab meat underneath.

Lod Chong Dessert seems similar to our local dessert, Chendol. It's more of coconut jelly strips and normal jelly strips soaked in coconut milk.

This popular Thai dessert is refreshing especially after a spicy meal. The taste of the Coconut Milk is not as thick as what we have from the red ruby.

For decent Thai Food, I find that Nana Thai portion is big and good enough. You also get to expiernce that the servers and staff are communicating in Thai Language.

Food Street Fried Kway Teow Mee 美食街炒粿条麵

Scouting stalls after stalls in Chinatown Complex for good food and one of us got to come across Food Street Fried Kway Teow Mee and decided to give it a try. We were in luck as we were the first in the queue for the stall in the morning.

The plate of Kway Teow was delicious and infused with a substantial amount Wok-Hei. The sweetness and amount of black sauce were consistent throughout.

King of Prawn Noodles

King of Prawn Noodles has taken over the shop space of Lai Lai Kitchen in Jurong Point selling prawn noodles. In fact, tenants of Jurong Point changed a lot ever since I have not been visiting the mall for a long time.

Shop of King of Prawn Noodles

The menu was rather interesting as it was named after the Royal Hierarchy, namely with King, Queen, Prince and Queen. It was rather confusing to me as a first-time patron. The environment was a semi-industrial theme with corrugated zinc sheets as part of the decorations. The walls were drawn with murals illustrating the olden days.

Wall Murals

The prince of a bowl of Kway Teow and Yellow Noodle Dry Prawn Noodles was quite expensive. Prawns were half with some blanched pork ribs, fish cakes and bean sprouts as ingredients. The chilli and sauce mixing the noodles were spicy. The soup on the other hand had a good flavour though.

What turned us off was the pork lards that was supposed to elevate the taste of our food has a plastic taste.

A2 Prince (Dry) - $8.50

For the Queen's order, the prawns are slightly bigger than the Prince's and I have ordered Yellow Noodles with Kway Teow in Soup. Ingredients such as fish cakes and lean meat were part of the dish. Toppings like fried onions were used to elevate the taste. Likewise, the pork lards had a weird taste.

A3 Queen (Soup) - $11.80

It will be our first and last visit to this stall. Service was rather slow and for Prawn Noodles, there are many better ones out there which is worth the price paid.

The Sea Grill

The Sea Grill is established in 2017 and with its locality situated on the coastal park in Singapore, Changi Beach. It is just a stone throw away from the beach shore and perfect to romance your date in an evening enjoying the beautiful sea breezes and listening to the natural sound of waves.

The dining place is surrounded by glass panels and allow ample natural light to shine in. Not only that, it gives an unobstructed and panoramic view of the sea. If you are a nature lover or one who loves to get close to the sea, this place is excellent to unwind yourself after a hard day of work.

The Sea Grill by Chevel Group

My visit was in the afternoon thus I did not get to enjoy sitting under the stars and watching the sea. It was a hot sunny day and I had to cool down with a bottle of beer.

Asahi Dry - $11

With the hot weather, I thought having a glass of smoothies can cool me too thus I ordered a glass of Lychee Smoothie. However, it was a disappointment, the entire cup tasted bland like plain shaved eyes with only one Syrup Lychee. It's totally not worth the price paid.

Fresh Fruit Smoothies - Lychee - $8

Soup is served with a slice of garlic bread and as a pumpkin soup lover. this roasted pumpkin soup with toasted sunflower seeds is a good choice.

Roasted Pumpkin Soup - $7

The clam chowder tasted good.

Boston Clams Chowder - $8

Ingredients like clams, leek and potatoes are visible.

Clam and Potatoes

Crabmeat Marinara Spaghetti was not too bad. Perhaps it will be better if the sauce turns out to be tangier in flavour balancing out the crustacean smell.

Crabmeat Marinara Spaghetti
Crabmeat Marinara Spaghetti - $18

Are you hungry?

On the other hand, I will prefer the texture of spaghetti to be firmer.

Mouthful of Pasta

Grilled Chicken Skewer with Pineapple is one of the recommended dishes for meat. The presentation was good with a skewer on the plate coupled with 2 dollops of potatoes with a crispy crust.

Grilled Chicken Skewer with Pineapple - $19.90

While their menu stated Pineapple with a grilled chicken skewer, there is only one small rectangle chunk pineapple in the skewer. Nevertheless, the chicken skewers were welled grilled with onions, green and red peppers. Pour the black pepper sauce over the chicken skewer to enjoy the grilled food.

Different Angle of Grilled Chicken Skewer with Pineapple

The ambience and location of the restaurant maybe are reasons for my returning visit but on second thought, I would prefer my trip to be worth with food above average to make my distance travel convincing.

Thai Seng Fish Soup

Braving the longest queue of the Coffeeshop in Ubi during the lunch hour to get a taste of this hidden gem Fish soup among the Industrial Estate.

Queue for Thai Seng Fish Soup
The queue for Thai Seng Fish Soup

The stall is run by two pax with uncle taking orders and auntie in the kitchen preparing bowl of delicious fish soup at a non-stopping rate.

Stall of Thai Seng Fish Soup

We have the medium bowl of Sliced Fish Soup and the soup was cloudy topped with garnishings like Chinese parsley and fried onions.

Fish Soup - $6 (Medium)

The Batang fish slices were firm and tender, it's not easy to "kiap" it with a pair of chopsticks.

Tender and Firm Batang Fish Slice

While the Sliced Fish Thick Bee Hoon Soup has a milky broth, the ingredients of their soup are still similar with cabbages, egg floss, fried onions, fried soles fish and Chinese parsley.

Sliced Fish Thick Bee Hoon Soup - $5 (Small)

The quality of Fish Slices tells it all. They have their own in house chilli sauce that gives an explosion of spiciness and it will burn our tongue.

Slice Fish

The smooth white slices of fish are bouncy and lend a good tender bite within.

Sliced Fish

So what's their secret recipe besides having Fried Sole Fish in their soup? The natural sweetness of the fried egg gives a good taste to their soup too.

Fried Egg

Does it worth my 20 - 30 Minutes queue? Perhaps this is the best Fish Soup in the Eastern Part of Singapore and of course, I believe there are nicer ones out there. In terms of rush lunch hours, the queue might be too time-consuming for some.
