Woori Jip Babsang 우리집밥상

Our first meal in Jeju after landing in the morning was spontaneous. We stumbled upon a highly-rated spot in the area and decided to try it. We chanced by "우리집밥상" which translates to "Our Home Table" in English. It refers to the traditional Korean home-cooked meals and the warm stories shared within a family.

Facade

It was about 11.30am and the entire place was full house due to the civil servants that were working around the area.

Interior

Seeing that we are foreigners, the shop owner (I assumed) tried to communicate with us and gave us a lot of attention during the meal. He was helpful and friendly, serving our meals with sincerity.

Banchan

Although Korean cuisine typically begins with banchan, I was amazed by the variety of dishes laid out on our dining table, as they were quite different from what I've experienced in Korean restaurants in Singapore.

Kimchi

The egg omelette with crab stick from the banchan was yummy.

Banchan

For a set meal comprising soup and rice, it costs us 10,000 Won which is about $10. The bowl of bone soup was rich and milky, deliciously done. Together with the spring onion, pairing the soup with the bowl of white rice makes our stomachs comfortable in such cooling weather.

Bone Soup

We were quite lucky to have found such homely food and felt so welcomed by the owners. Like what was mentioned online, the place is of best valued meal and is visited by the locals.

Google Maps didn't write the specific address but it was indicated in the map below.

We paired the plain white naan with their recommended vegetable curry, Aloo Gobi Shimla Mirchi - an aromatic blend of potato and cauliflower cooked with onion and tomato masala. The naan perfectly soaked up the rich flavours of the curry, making it a delicious combination.

Aloo Gobi Shimla Mir chi & Plain Naan - $16.50 + $3.50

We shared the tandoori platter between us, which came with various flavoursome treats: three kinds of chicken (Murgh Tikka Badami, Chicken Tikka & Kali Mirchi Kebab), succulent fish tikka, prawns, and a mutton sheekh kebab. It was a delicious and satisfying spread, perfect for sharing.

Tandoori Platter - $49

While we savored the Indian dishes, we didn’t forget about the British staple, fish and chips. The crispy, golden-battered fish and perfectly fried chips provided a comforting and familiar contrast to the spiced flavours of the Indian fare.

Fish & Chips - $18

The Warm Lava Chocolate Torte with vanilla ice cream didn't quite meet our expectations, as the molten centre failed to flow when we cut into it. Although the flavour was still rich, the lack of that gooey chocolate lava was a bit disappointing.

Warm Lava Chocoalte Torte - $18

We washed down the meal with a refreshing glass of strawberry lassi and a warm, aromatic pot of masala tea, both traditional Indian beverages that paired beautifully with the rich flavours of the tandoori platter.

Our Meal

Overall, it was a great experience indulging in both British and Indian food while chilling with friends in a relaxed area that wasn’t too bustling for a Friday night. The live bands playing during weekend evenings add even more reason to unwind here, offering the perfect escape without having to navigate through the usual crowds at the malls.

The boys were eager for another serving, but unfortunately, the lime rice had already sold out. So, we settled for just the Indo Grilled Chicken (Ayam Bakar) drumstick. The chicken was expertly grilled, boasting rich flavours while remaining tender and juicy—absolutely delicious!

All in all, we found the food to be delightful, and this was our first time experiencing Indonesian fast food in Singapore. It was a satisfying introduction to the flavors and dishes of Indonesia.

Ordering Buzzer

We had their signature Pad Thai (Seafood), Tom Yum Soup (Seafood) with Rice and Signature Mango Salad.

What we ordered

Pad Thai is a beloved stir-fried noodle dish that is a staple in Thai cuisine. It features a delightful combination of sweet and spicy flavors, with prawns as the star protein. The dish is complemented by chopped peanuts, which add a satisfying crunch and enhance the overall texture. The balance of tamarind, fish sauce, and lime creates a vibrant taste that makes Pad Thai a favourite for me.

Pad Thai (Seafood)

Although I'm not typically a fan of thick red tom yum soup, this particular one surprisingly opened up my appetite. The broth wasn’t too cloying, and instead, it was light and perfectly balanced, making it irresistibly appetizing.

Tom Yum Soup (Seafood)

The vibrant and refreshing Thai Mango Salad strikes the perfect balance between sweet, tangy, and spicy flavours. It features thinly julienned green mango, which is firm and slightly tart. The salad is typically tossed with finely sliced shallots, fresh cilantro, and chopped peanuts for added crunch.

Signature Mango Salad - $7.50

The Neighbourwok

Whenever we talk about Hokkien Mee, I always rave about the one located in Bukit Batok. Although there are a few well-known Hokkien Mee stalls in Bukit Batok, I’ve been a loyal supporter of The Neighbourwok since before they relocated, and they’ve never disappointed. Their Hokkien Mee consistently delivers on flavour and quality, making it a standout favourite for me.

Our Meal

Their version of Hokkien Mee always leaves me wanting more! The cooking style results in a moist and savory plate of noodles, perfectly soaked in the umami essence of both seafood and meat. It truly floats my boat. And let’s not forget the ever-fiery belachan chili—it adds a fantastic punch to the entire dish, making each bite even more satisfying.

Hokkien Mee

The crispy pork lard and the sweet taste of egg, combined with the burnt wok flavours of the noodles, were absolutely to die for. The rich, crunchy texture of the pork lard and the aromatic, slightly caramelized egg create a perfect contrast with the smoky, savoury noodles. Each bite is a delightful blend of flavours and textures that makes this Hokkien Mee truly exceptional.

My Addiction

While we enjoy a good plate of Hokkien Mee, we still crave more delicious food. Alongside it, we also ordered their Satay featuring mutton, chicken, and pork and Grilled Prawns. The satay skewers offer a flavorful variety of meats, each grilled to perfection with a delightful char and savoury marinade. The grilled prawns add a juicy, smoky element to the spread. Together, these dishes complement the Hokkien Mee beautifully, making for a well-rounded and satisfying meal.

Satay & Grilled Prawns

Needless to say, I’m still The Neighbourwok’s all-time supporter! Their Hokkien Mee consistently impresses, and their other dishes like satay and grilled prawns are fantastic additions. Their dedication to flavour and quality keeps me coming back for more.

The fried chicken wings may appear dry on the outside with their crispy, golden-brown coating, but they surprise with juicy, tender meat inside. Each bite reveals the flavorful, moist chicken beneath the crunchy exterior, making for an irresistible combination of textures. Despite the crisp appearance, the wings retain their succulent juiciness, elevating the overall taste.

The spicy pork wontons had a deliciously tangy kick from the vinegar seasoning, which added a bright, sour note. This balanced perfectly with the rich, flavorful chili oil, making each bite incredibly appetizing. The combination of the spicy heat and sourness enhanced the savory pork filling, creating a satisfying and well-rounded dish.

You can’t go wrong with the basic Egg Fried Rice and Pork Cutlet. The combination of the aromatic rice and fresh seafood created a satisfying and well-balanced dish.

We opted for the Dry Noodle with Chicken Cutlet, and it was a delightful combination. The noodles were well-seasoned and fragrant, providing a flavorful base for the dish. The chicken cutlet had subtle hints of ginger marinade, adding an aromatic touch to the crispy, juicy meat. Overall, it was a well-executed and satisfying meal, with the noodles and chicken complementing each other perfectly.

The bowl of Pork Liver & Kidney Mee Sua exceeded my expectations with its generous portion of ingredients. The kidney was well-processed, and free of unpleasant smell, while the pork liver was cooked to the perfect texture—tender and not overdone. The Mee Sua was a large serving, making the dish not only flavour but also satisfying. Overall, it was a hearty and well-executed meal.

I opted for the dry version of the Mixed Porky Prawn Noodle, and it didn’t disappoint. The noodles were perfectly cooked and came with a generous mix of ingredients, including intestine, skin, lean meat, prawns, and beansprouts. Each element added a unique texture and flavour to the dish, making it a satisfying and well-balanced meal. The dry version really allowed the ingredients to shine, with the sauce tying everything together beautifully.

I thought visiting at 2 pm for lunch would mean avoiding the crowd, but I was wrong—the queue was still vigorous! The prawn broth had a delightful umami flavour simmered for 14 hours to perfection without being overly rich, which suited my taste perfectly. The queue definitely speaks for the restaurant's reputation, and it was clear why it remains popular even during off-peak hours
