Jiu Xiang Mian Jia

Looking at the signboard of Jiu Xiang Mian Jia, I was quite amazed by the number of dishes pinned on their stall front. Its extensive range ranges from Home Made noodles, Fish Soup and even Satay Bee Hoon, let alone those side dishes like their dumplings.

The Stall

While I expect Satay Bee Hoon to have the usual ingredients, they have a few variations for patrons. The Original Satay Bee Hoon with the standard ingredients like what I ordered, sliced meat satay bee hoon, sliced meat & sliced fish satay Bee Hoon & sliced fish satay Bee hoon.

While not all places had pig's liver included in their Satay Bee Hoon, I'm quite surprised to see the ingredients in my plate of food. The amount of peanut sauce is adequate for the plate of Bee Hoon. The nutty fragrance and aroma of the peanut together with the ingredients had made me craving for more.

While this may not be as famous as the one in the vicinity, its already above the average and match our tatstebuds.

The Braised House

I have been seeing Braised House all over social media and I'm glad I had finally made a trip down to savour their Braised Meals. Braised House is about a bus stop away from Kovan MRT station and perhaps will take about 8-10mins walk from the station too.

The Signature Braised Chicken was served with chopped chicken wings, Xiao Bai Cai, Shitake Mushrooms and Peanuts. 

The chilli was quite spicy but gave us a fiery kick to our dishes.,

The Signature Braised Pork bowl was served with uncut Pork Belly, Xiao Bai Cai, Ramen Egg and Mild Spicy Minced Meat. Do not judge the book by its cover, the minced pork was thoroughly braised.

The pork belly not only looked well braised, it looked fatty, but it simply disintegrated once it popped into the mouth.

While I cut into the ramen egg, the lava of the egg gradually flows into my bowl of rice.

It's way too obvious that we simply could not get enough of the Pork Belly and thus we bought the Kong Bak Bao. Besides just having the fluffy soft bun sandwiching the "melt in your mouth" braised pork belly meat, it was accompanied by a big lettuce too.

Seorae (JEM)

Everytime as I pass by Seorae (JEM) during the meal time, there is a long queue form outside the restaurant without fail and this had caught my attention. 

Seorae is popular for being a pork rare-cut specialist as they introduce rare and premium pork cuts such as the Pork Skirt Meat aka Galmaegisal to Singapore. They are the largest Korean BBQ Pork Specialist Chain from South Korea with over 300 outlets globally. 

Environment

There is a limit of 90 minutes dining and let's take a look at the menu.

The Abundance Feast offers 8 Premium Meat and of course other Signature Korean Galmaegsal for Grill as well as free flow of Banchan.

The Abundance Feast comprises 2 platters, Prosperity Platter & Golden Platter. The difference is that the Prosperity Platter includes Beef, Pork and Chicken while the Golden Platter does not offer beef.

Prosperity Platter

Each fully-grown pig only produces 250g of this sirloin-extension, Skirt meat better known as Galmaesial in Korean. Its Juicy and tender.  This rare part was said to be reserved strictly for Korean royalties in olden days.

BBQ Starts

Seorae had marinated and massaged the Pork skirt meat for 30 minutes using their authentic Korean spices. No doubt that they are juicy, it's of lesser fat.

Adopting the use of Binchotan, generates intense consistency in the heat, ensuring that each piece of meat is grilled to perfection, allowing patrons to achieve a better texture, tenderness and smokiness. Of course enhancing the diners' experience.

There are 3 compartments at the side of the BBQ stove,  with the largest containing grilled egg, followed by in noodles and the smallest with cheese.

Besides dabbing the BBQ meat in the 3 kinds of sauces (Ssamjang, Onion and Gochujang) given, cheese lovers can roll the eat like this on the melted cheese.

My friend and I were fighting for the cheese and it got depleted easily as both of us were cheese lovers. For additional refills, it can be topped up at additional charges.

The charred edges had given the juicy meat another level of taste.

Let's make our own Korean Lettuce Wraps. We took the given fresh lettuce and placed the BBQ meat, preferred items and sauce, wrapped it up and pop into our mouth. The combination of savoury BBQ meat with crunchy lettuce was delicious.

The slice of Prime Beef Oyster Blade was flavourful and yes! yummy! We enjoyed the entire BBQ session without feeling like a walking BBQ when we left as the ventilation system as well as the equipment use to withdraw the smoke was efficient.

Washing down the food, we were refreshed by Subak Cocktail. Subak also known as watermelon in Korean is light, fruity and perfect to paired with BBQ Food. The natural sweetness of the watermelon in combination to the mild neutral flavour of the Soju creates a delightful and easy-to-drink cocktail.

Kao Ge Yu

Located in the heart of East Village, Kao Ge Yu is a Chinese Seafood Restaurant that offers an immersive dining experience with signature-flavoured grilled fish, classic snacks, sides and refreshing drinks.

The restaurant offers a cozy ambiance with cute fish lanterns hanging from the ceiling and if you notice the tiles of the counters were featuring the scales of the fish.

They also have wooden stick games like this for fun. Try your luck and pick the stick.

The Golden Pumpkin Pie was served in a plate of 5. The exterior of the pie was covered by lots of sesame seeds. While the interior texture was more of a sweet and savoury mochi ball.

We didn't get to taste the pumpkin flavour though. If you enjoy Mochi, you will definitely like this.

The Mouth Watering Chicken was generous in portion and was served chilled and tender. The dish was topped with garlic, sesame seeds, peanuts, spring onions and chilli oil. It is appetizing and best for sharing.

The spicy level was still acceptable for us and yes, tantalizing to our palattes.

Here comes the starring dish of the meal. 

Grilled fish Pot

For the non-spicy options, we were recommended to have Tomato or Garlic flavour Grilled Fish. We ordered the big Linbo Fish and added items like Luncheon Meat, Instant Noodle, Prawns and Oyster Mushrooms. The set is of quality and the portion suits 2-3 pax.

Although we saw that a lot of garlic had been added, it was not as garlicky as I thought. It had balanced out the sweetness of the fish well as well as the savoury soup base which we enjoyed drenching on our bowl of white rice.

Ingredients in the pot had soaked up the flavours of the broth and were yummy.

The quality of the prawns was worth mentioning. The size was big, fresh and juicy.

These hand-beaten lemon fruit teas close off our meal on a good note. It was refreshingly good for both flavours.

Tai Seng Fish Soup

 Enjoy this flavouful fish soup that is made from the scratch and served with sliced fish, deep-friedfish or fish head. Like many other fish soup stall, pair it with noodles, rice to complete it as a meal. Being recommended on the Michelin guide, Tai Seng Fish Soup is a third-generation family business with its recipe passed down from their grandmother.

Savouring down the bowl of fresh sliced Batang fish and topping it up with additional fried egg floss at $1. The soup is clear and flavourful with Tofu, cabbages, and tomato topped with fried shallots.

The Fried Fish Soup ingredients were identical to what we had from the bowl of sliced fish soup. Perhaps the only difference is that besides the type of fish, we had also opted for a milky soup base.

While Tai Seng prides themselves with their quality standard of fish soup, their fried fish is done without additional batter. It was prepared with the simple condiment, example salt, sugar and marinade and fried. It was tasty and the way of preparation the fried dory fish without turning soggy,

While I almost mistook this fish egg as cauliflowers. The fish egg was topped up to our bowl of fish soup and we were glad that there wasn't any strong fishy taste in it.

Not forgetting their home recipe Belachan that had given us a fiery kick to our taste buds. Dab your slices of fish onto it and get yourself a try to the spiciness on your tongue. Shiok!
