Fong Sheng Fried Kway Teow

By longing at the queue and hearing the constant "clinging clanging" sound from the hit of the wok with the Chinese turner from the stall of Fong Sheng Fried Kway Teow has been a typical scene during the peak hours. Despite a tough competition between the 2 popular Fried Kway Teow Stalls in the Food Center, both of them do have their school of fans.

Stall of Fong Sheng Fried Kway Teow

Every bite was burst full of flavours from the Wok Hei taste, a mixture of blood cockles, Chinese sausages, fishcakes, beansprouts and eggs.

Fried Kway Teow (Big) - $4.50

The taste was definitely satisfying and manned by a friendly senior couple. If you love the ingredients of blood cockles and Chinese sausage, you can't miss this out!

Ingredients

Comparing its competitor's stall Day Night Fried Kway Teow 日夜炒粿条, I would say that both of them has their own unique attraction. While Fong Sheng uses a broader type of Kway Teow and was generous with its ingredients like Chinese sausage and blood cockles, Day Night Fried Kway Teow put them in sparingly but if you are someone who prefers a savoury taste to more ingredients, you might want to head to another stall.

What do you like? A broader Kway Teow or Kway Teow Kia for your CKT?

Ah Wei Claypot Food

While waiting for the group to enjoy their durian feast nearby, we headed to Qing Feng Huat for our quick dinner. The place consist of many stalls in the evening and we were simply spoilt for choices.

Qing Feng Huat

After walking a few rounds, we finally decided on Ah Wei Claypot food.

Ah Wei Claypot Food

We had the signatures Claypot E-Mee Dry and Claypot Lou Shi Fun Dry from their menu. These are commonly found in Malaysian cuisine.

The flavor of Claypot E-Mee Dry is a harmonious blend of savory, umami, and sometimes slightly sweet notes. The stir-frying process imparts a wok hei (breath of the wok) aroma and adds depth to the overall taste. The sauce, often a combination of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and other seasonings, coats the noodles and ingredients, infusing them with its savory goodness.

Claypot E-Mee Dry 瓦煲焖老鼠粉 - RM 10

The dish offers a delightful interplay of textures. The egg noodles are typically cooked to a perfect balance between softness and a slight chewiness. The addition of meat contributes a tender and succulent texture.

Claypot Lou Shi Fun Dry 瓦煲焖伊面 - RM 10

The use of claypot in preparation of the dish is notable. The claypot retains and distribute the heat evenly which also means that the noodle at the bottom get a slightly crispy texture while the top remains tender. Enjoy this dual texture of the dish!

Its just so yummy

Overall, the dishes were comforting and flavorful dish that captures the essence of Malaysian cuisine. The variety of flavors and textures, resulting in a well-rounded and satisfying eating experience.

Union "Chee Pow Kai"

After shifting its stall to a few places, Union "Chee Pow Kai" is being located back to the original location at the same coffee shop but in a renovated environment. The renovation had kind of maximise the use of space and more new stall fronts had surfaced.

Union "Chee Pow Kai"

Pricing had been increased after the move. Each piece of chicken cost $2.40 now. No doubt that the taste still tastes as good and fragrant. I'm starting to feel the pinch for my meal by spending. Nonetheless, I start self-consoling that we only have this once in a blue moon.

10 Pieces of Chicken - $24

There are still customers who called in a made orders then collect them in tubs. Seriously, the Chinese Wine had strongly infused the chicken meat and every piece is well marinated too.

Yummy Paper Wrapped Chicken

While previously when they were located in Clementi Road, there were many other items on the menu like Prawn Fritters, Fried Rice Etc. How I wish they can bring back those items in the good old days.

While having just Chicken is not enough, we had the Egg Noodles too. They were tossed in fragrant condiments and topped with some greens. Well, still simple and favourable to us.

Overscoop

Alert for dessert lovers! Overscoop is a dessert cafe that specialises in waffles, croffles and gelato! They adopted an interesting concept with a mini scoop over on top of each other and thus their business name Overscoop.

Overscoop at West Coast Plaza

The interior design of the Overscoop was comfortable, with clouds as hanging ornaments. The furnishings were simple.

The Teriyaki bowl was served with salad base, brown rice ramen, Carrot, corn, cucumber, cherry tomato, pineapple, teriyaki chicken and tossed in sesame sauce. It was both appetizing and refreshing. During this order, we got an Overscoop with a spoonful of potato.

Teriyaki Overbowl 照烧鸡肉沙拉 - $9.80

The waffle is worth a try topped with icing powder and chocolate syrup surrounding the plate. It has a crispy exterior with a fluffy texture on the inside. The Speculoos Gelato scoop I had was not too sweet. Our Overscoop was Blueberry Yoghurt Gelato.

Waffle with Ice Cream

Embrace the coastal breeze while you indulge in the refreshing goodness of their Acai Bowls. Our Acai Serving was served in this aesthetical faux coconut husk bowl with wooden spoon.

Acai Bowl

The Acai Bowl was refreshing and cooling. We had Mango Sorbet as overscoop. In the Bowl, Granola, Fruits, Cocoa Nibs and coconut flakes were included too.

With the patience and advice from the instructor, I managed to paint this masterpiece. To be honest, I haven't been touching the paintbrush since I left secondary school days. I can't believe I'm holding brush and painting again after so many years.

It was a pleasant experience, that we got to enjoy a bottle of wine while painting. It really gives us more creativity.  Share the joys with my mates and have a fun time painting. You can bring your own wine/drinks/BBT!

Surrey Hills (Raffles City)

In a short time span, Surrey Hills, the Melbourne Inspired Cafe has opened 4 outlets in Singapore. I got to first know about Surrey Hills with their first outlet at the Surrey Hills Jurong D'Arena. I have not visited their 2nd and 3rd outlet yet but let's visit their 4th Outlet located at Raffles City Mall.

Surrey Hill Grocer

The laid-back and inviting nature of the cafe theme is uniform in its outlets, featuring lush greeneries as well as cascading foliage. For those who love nature, this place definitely fits the bill with its cosy interior.

Interior

This outlet features the chain's first-ever opened kitchen with a charming mini grocer as well as an outlet-exclusive dining menu that includes seafood dishes by MasterChef Singapore Season 2 Winner - Chef Derek Cheong.

Mini Grocer

While the world today talks about sustainability, Surrey Hills's serviette does give us a ponder with the wording "If you ate today, Thank a farmer".

If you ate today, Thank a Farmer

Up on the wall

The Farm Style Mushroom Soup is unique and has an exclusive color combination with truffle sweet potato foam topping up with a bowl of delicious Mushroom Soup. Pair it up with the fragrant garlic toast and enjoy!

The Duck Leg Confit was charred till crispiness at its skin and was aromatic. Spaghetti was cooked to Al Dente perfection with mushroom ragout. What a good combination! Best of all, we get to enjoy the mushroom bits and chunks too.

One of the popular dishes to order will be this Seafood Shashuka. It is spiced and made with seafood broth served with eggs, prawns, Hokkaido Scallops and pork chorizo sausage.

The Barramundi was locally farmed, brined and pan-seared. It was decked up by a bed of quinoa rice with aromatic coconut broth and served with burnt cauliflower.

Day Night Fried Kway Teow 日夜炒粿条

Whenever there is a craving, there will be a fix. :)  While our favourite Fried Kway Teow Stall in Clementi had dropped its standard, we decided to look around for a better one.

Day Night Fried Kway Teow

With the media articles plastering the glass, it is undeniable they are reputable and received numerous awards and been published on popular food blogs. Every plate of Char Kway Teow is fried to order which means if you are ordering 5 plates at one go, uncle will have to cook for 5 rounds.

Man Behind the Wok

Here's a wet version of Char Kway Teow. For its appearance and its smoky fragrance, it had already bought my vote. Every plate of CKT was served with a lime. The plate of Kway Teow noodles used was narrower ones and not those typical kind we often grab from the hawkers.

Char Kway Teow - $4.50 (Big)

CKT was sweet and savoury in its sweet dark sauce. CKT was served with Chinese Sausage, fishcakes, beansprouts, eggs and mini cockles. The use of crispy pork lard also elevates the taste of the dish.

Char Kway Teow

We were lucky that we were early and got our orders before the crowd came. Overall I find that the CKT is definitely above average standard and we will definitely be back again to fix our Char Kway Teow craving should there be any.
