Whisk & Paddle

Updated November 20222

We had a cafe-hopping afternoon and ended up in Whisk & Paddle for some little chats while sipping away some Whisky on the Rocks and some refreshing Elderflower Lemongrass Mint Tea.

Pairing our drinks, we have some Calamari bar bites. These rings were battered and deep-fried. Dipping them into the Tatar Sauce makes it complete.

After numerous visits, the Fresh Clams in White Wine Sauce is still one of my comfort food from Whisk & Paddle. Simply love its strong aromatic White Wine and natural seafood sweetness. Dipping the toasts in the stock makes everything so good.

For people who reside in Punggol area, Whisk & Paddle is of no stranger for it is located along the river side. I have been there a few years back when I was looking for branch in Punggol area. Now that it has opened another outlet in the West, we are really glad.

Opening its door to the public since 5th September in Bukit Gombak Park, Whisk & Paddle is housed in a glass house theme structure surrounded by lush greeneries. It is conveniently located with a stone throw away from Bukit Gombak MRT and PCN (Park Connector Network)

Fortunately for this period, we are still able to dine in a small group and catch up over a glass of beer and some food to fill ourselves.

Fresh clams were served in skillet and comes with 2 slices of toasts. Clams were big and plump.

Broth was naturally sweetened by these seafood with hints of garlic and butter aroma. We enjoyed the dish however the soup may be on a salty side alone, therefore its best goes with the toasts.

The battered haddock fish was fried to golden brown perfection. The dish was served with thick-cut fries and tartar sauce. If you enjoy Fish & Chips, you cannot go wrong ordering it.

Pizza crust was thin and crispy with parts of it charred.  We were kind of engulfed by the fragrance of lemon grass at the moment it was served. The ingredients were visible, topping the crust with red onions and a handful of cut prawns.

I was thinking what drinks to order and in the end I went ahead with refreshing smoothie consist of Watermelon and Lychee Flavour.

If you are driving there, do note that the park lots are rather limited.

Updated October 2021

Making a return trip is inevitable especially when it's new in the area. The Lychee Mint Cooler is refreshing with sweetened lychee floating on the cooling soda with mint leaves enhancing its taste. It's a pretty common drink served in the cafe together with the Iced Latte. While the Iced Cappuccino is executed in a not so common way - it was served in coffee iced cubes and a bottle of milk for us to pour into it.

Besides having repeated orders of my last visit, we have pasta for sharing. Crabmeat Linguine is tantalising. The texture of linguine was not too soft and the firmness was perfect. The taste of crustacean meat was very well blended with chilli.

The Duck & Lychee Pizza did not disappoint. With the trust of Whisk & Paddle's quality food, I will say this Duck & Lychee Pizza is a good order. It's more of a savoury taste topped with slices of duck meat, lychee and corn kernels. Recommended!

Le Shrimp Ramen

Le Shrimp Ramen is part of the paradise group. Inspired by the flavours of both Japanese Ramen Broth and silky threads of Chinese ramen, Le Shrimp is actually a combination of both cultures, offering some simple dishes on the menu.

Le Shrimp Ramen
Le Shrimp Ramen

Le Shrimp Ramen features two speciality broths, shrimp and tonkatsu each with its own dedicated followers. Tonkotsu broth achieves a rich and creamy texture after long hours of simmering using pork bones, resulting the collagen-rich soup.

As for the shrimp broth, it has an umami-rich flavour of fresh prawns and definitely excites prawns noodles fans.

Topping up the Ramen with $3.70 to complete our meal with a choice of appetiser and drink and we had the Chilled Silken Tofu with Century Egg. The appetiser was generously topped with bonito flakes and spring onions and with the wobbly chilled tofu with Century Egg, it absolutely made a great appetiser, especially for sharing.

The other appetiser we had will be the seasoned bamboo shoot. An individual portion would cost $3.60

Out of the drinks menu, we had the Black Apple Tea as its quite outstanding among the other drinks we knew.

Their Signature Trio Shrimp Ramen comprises of handmade Ebiko prawn paste, succulent prawn dumplings and big fresh prawns served with their Japan-inspired Signature Shrimp Broth and delectable noodles.

The taste of the Big Prawn & Braised Pork Rib Shrimp Ramen is quite similar to the Le Signature Trio Shrimp Ramen as they shared the same broth. Besides the big prawn as the main ingredient, their braised pork rib was fork tender and falls apart easily.

We thought of having Ramen in Tonkotsu broth and had the Garoupa with Pickled Vegetable. The combination of Chinese cuisine elements with Japanese Broth was awesome. Large slices of Garoupa were given to pair with the delectable noodles.

A little downside is that no doubt the fish is of thick slices, and the natural stink of the fishy smell was not eliminated. Overall, this bowl of Ramen is also comforting for cool rainy weather.

Feng Ji Kway Chap

We have been hearing about this famous Kway Chap Stall in Jalan Batu but never had the chance to visit as they usually get sold out in the morning. Be prepared to join the queue for as long as 30 minutes.

Stall of Feng Ji Kway Chap

The set of Kway Chap costs $2.50 and is probably the cheapest in the market now. The stall is run by a husband and wife team where the husband prepares and cooks the items while the wife takes customers' orders.

Kway Chap Set - $2.50

The ingredients on the plate include braised egg, pork, Tau Pok, pork belly and intestine.

Kway Chap Ingredients from the Set

The big intestine was well braised and well cleaned without any gamey taste. Pairing these ingredients with the bowl of luscious and smooth Kway in the braised gravy. Bowl of Kway Chap was decent but definitely not the best I had.

Big Intestine - $2.50

Patience is required if you are joining the queue. Overall Feng Ji Kway Chap tasted above standard and the price is relatively on the friendlier side. I won't mind having them again if I do not have to wait for a long time.

128 Fish Porridge

128. Fish Porridge used to be one of my favourite stalls to patronize. While they are known for the freshness of the food served with tasty and favourable soup, the queue was always never-ending in the past, as written in the last post.

128 Fish Porridge

The serving of Sliced Fish Soup differed from the last one I used to have. Instead of the usual vegetables, the bitter gourd was used. Food pricing remains the same and chunks of sliced fish were still as generous.

Fish slices were still smooth and chunky in bites.

The sliced fish dipping in the powerful and fiery chilli was something that remembers clearly for the spice was so strong that it gave a sudden chill through my body system.

Overall, I find that the standard of Fish soup is no longer what I used to have in mind. With a number of competitors around the Hawker Centre, there might be a tastier fish soup around.

Posted 2nd November 2013

The never-ending snake queues had been formed orderly ever since 128 Fish Porridge was first opened in Blk 505 Jurong West St 52 Food centre.

128 Fish Porridge Stall

Famous for it's smooth, tendered thick and fresh sliced pieces of fish, one could not even resist ordering the biggest portion. Sliced are well handled with every order individually cooked. The tasty soup with fried onion oil, chopped garlic, and small dried shrimps fragrance had gained the applause of the neighborhood residents. They had also added the steamboat vegetable "tang o" which blends well with the rest of the combination.

Smallest Bowl of Fish Soup - $4

Freshness of fish

An exciting balechan chilli that that leaves a chill down your spine physically not literally and with a spicy after taste lingers around your mouth. Not forgetting a burning and grinding sensation in your stomach. A quick or full dab of sliced fish in the chilli sauce is SHIOKINGLY Good

The Shioking 128 Fish Porridge Chilli

For those who are more adventurous, fish head is available at minimum cost of $5 per bowl and rice is charged at additional costing.

Fish Head Soup - $5

Be prepared the raindrops coming down from your head after grabbing these sambal chillis even though the hawker centre is well ventilated and with fans installed and mounted on the pillars. Do get some packets of tissue with you. Tables around the stall are mostly occupied, sitting away from the stall may help. The stretch of stalls where 128 Fish is situated is known for its Bak Kut Teh and Fish/Chicken Porridge, well liked by the neighbourhood therefore seatings around that area may be harder to find.

Price is reasonable and the quality of food is definitely there.

Daily Staples is a food kiosk that is located in Northshore Plaza serving  Japanese-inspired rice and soba bowls and drinks. It is also conveniently located next to the entrance/exit linking to Samudera (PW4) LRT station.

Daily Staples

Combo Bowls are new on the menu and we had Smoked Duck with Baked Chicken Don. The bowl comprises 4 pieces of smoked duck & 4 pieces of baked chicken with Torched Mentaiko, Japanese Rice, Onsen egg, pickles, edamame, seaweed as well as corn kernels. The rice base can be upgraded to soba at an additional cost of $0.60.

Duck & Baked Chicken Don - $7.90

A generous amount of Takoyaki sauce was given to the Takoyaki Balls (Octopus). It comes with a box of 8 pieces and these were topped with Japanese Mayonnaise and Seaweed.

Takoyaki Balls (8pcs) - $5.90

Pairing the food with a cup of Iced Taro Latte. I will prefer the cup of Taro Latte to be on a concentrated side. Oat Milk option is also available for their Latte and Ice Chocoate.

Iced Taro Latte - $4.50

Simply love the well-balanced meal with a drink, snack and Japanese Rice Bowl.

En Ramen

En Ramen is finally opened after a long wait. I have been wanting to visit their stall in the coffee shop when they were back in Toh Guan but I never had the chance.

The furnishings of the eating place was simple and down to earth with concrete cement flooring.

The Tonkotsu Broth was appetising and flavourful. At a relatively affordable price of $7.50, we got a bowl of En Original Ramen with Cha Shu, black fungus, spring onions and egg.

Topping up the $8.50 En Signature Ramen for an additional Bamboo shoot at $1.50. Similar to the En Original Ramen, it was served in a rich bowl of Tonkotsu pork broth and braised tender chashu slices. The stir-fried minced pork with their secret chilli paste, cut spring onion, black fungus and Ajitama egg makes up the bowl.
