Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab

Following Chef Don Lim's famous Don Signature Crab and Chicken Pie ever since his first pie shop in Far East Square to  Don's Pie & Cake, Signature Crab in Toa Payoh till Chicken Pie Kitchen & finally Don Signature Crab in Tyrwhitt Road.

Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab

The place was modernly furnished with an open concept kitchen where customers can look through the glass panel over the chef doing the pastries. The theme of the restaurant was brown and teal in colour.

From the Entrance

The place has limited seating with only a capacity of 25 pax, therefore reservation will be highly recommended if you are going down during peak hours like lunch or dinner as their seats get filled up quickly. The eating place is pet friendly too.

OOps!

While walking along the aisle of the entrance of the kitchen will lead to back door of the restaurant as well as this counter bar area.

Bar Counter

Like most of the dining areas nowadays, they are doing away with physically menu and patrons were required to scan the QR code to get a digital copy of the menu.

Once we decided upon our orders, we headed to the counter for payment and order.

Order Orders for the Day

Wow! That's a dozen of Abalone on the plate!  It's a luxury to have the 12 pieces of Yoshihama Abalone as our starting dish. With the abalone placement at the circumference of the plate and seasonal nuts and fruits handpicked from the supermarket, I thought that such an appetizer was pretty unique.

Abalone Seasonal Salad - $23.80

The mixture of almond, walnut, tomato, apple, raisins, strawberries etc coated in the sweet sauce was inviting.

Abalone

If you are interested in the Japanese Breed Yoshihama Abalone, they are available over at the counter for purchase too.

Yoshihama Abalone (Japanese Breed)

Here's the star dish that I came for and their signature dish which started all! The smaller crabs were sold out and therefore we had no choice but to order the XL size Crab. At Don, they only use Sri Lankan air-flown mud crabs and in the event that the crabs receive is not up to the Chef's standards & quality, they may decline to sell crabs for the day.

Crab Bee Hoon - $68.80

The taste remains familiar and fills with the sweet taste with hints of herbs in the broth. The milky broth taste was enhanced by the use of vegetables and yam too.

Yam

As an alternative, they have dishes that are prepared with fresh, succulent prawns, clams and scallops. We had the medium portion of Prawn & Scallop Laksa Bee Hoon for 2 pax with thick bee hoon in Chef Don Lim's unique Laksa gravy.

Prawn & Scallop Laksa Bee Hoon - $23.80

This was my first time ordering their laksa and even condiments like the laksa leaves were generously used. This enhanced the fragrance of the dish.

Dried Laksa Leaves

The bowl of laksa was generously thrown with a handful of fresh and succulent prawns

Succulent Prawns

The scallop was also of quality, they were big, plump and juicy too. Overall, the bowl of Laksa was not too heavy on the use of coconut milk and was a hearty local dish.

Scallop

No doubt that the chilli sauce was good, it was not applicable to the dishes we ordered as each individual dish has its unique flavours and we felt that Chilli Sauce would only overpower its original taste.

Chilli Sauce

The reservation system online was not friendly as it required input of credit card details and if there is any cancellation, there will be a charge of about $38 per pax. There is no reservation via phone call too. Therefore, we chose to walk in and waited for about 30 minutes before we got our table.

No doubt I do enjoy their Signature Crab Bee Hoon, but with the limited seating, carpark lots and limited dining time, it was not at our advantage. I guess I will have to resort to take away if I do have the craves for their Crab Bee Hoon.

Rong Cheng Delight

We are revisiting another stall that was 5 years apart. We were glad that there are still many familiar stalls in the Hawker Centre after so many years of consideration of the pandemic too. The signboard of Rong Cheng Delight has never changed since then.

Stall of Rong Cheng Delight

Torn between the sweet and sour pork with the Pork Ribs, we decided on the latter. We started off our meal with Pork Ribs on our plate of pork ribs. The pork ribs were well fried and evenly coated with the sweet savoury sauce.

Pork Ribs - $10

This is absolutely one of the dishes that I had missed a lot from Rong Cheng Delight. The mixture of chilli, onion, tomato sauce and eggs sauce topped with Chinese parsley made the fresh Crayfish taste so yummy.

Sambal Crayfish - $30

The Stirred Fried Nai Bai was well executed with minced garlic as well as some enoki mushroom.

Nai Bai - $8

Their Cai Poh Fish head has been always on my mind. The steaming cooking style of the fish brings out the freshness of the fish while the generous amount of fried Cai Poh, cut spring onions and chilli simply elevated the taste of the dish.

Cai Poh Fish - $25

The culinary skills and standard of Rong Cheng Delight are pretty well maintained. Perhaps this is also one of the reasons why the regulars keep coming back for their food.

Steamed Fish

During the peak hours, we waited about 15 - 30 minutes for our dish to be served. No doubt that we were quite hungry during our wait, but we still reserve our stomach spaces for the meal and tried not to order bites from other stalls.

Posted 23rd October 2017

Rong Cheng Delight is located in the same row as Ron Sheng Fish Head Bee Hoon in Jurong East. Having spotted Rong Cheng Delight ever since I had its neighbour Fish Head Bee Hoon, we always have such plan to dine there after seeing so many plates of Cai Po Fish Head doles out from their kitchen. However, it was always tough to order Cze Char with just 2 pax.

Rong Cheng Delight
We were going to the near by Famous Fish Cze Char, unfortunately it was closed for the day and we had decided Rong Cheng Delight as an alternative.

The Cai Po Fish Head did impress. Fish head was fresh and heavily covered with cut spring onions, chilli and Chai Po (Preserved vegetable bits) in sweet gravy. If you are thinking that the dish will be salty because of the generous use of Chai Po, this isnt the case here. Reversely, I find the dish tantalizing and ends with a great sweet frehness note.

Cai Po Fish Head - $28

Fresh and yummy, these Crayfish were cook in the style of local chilli crab with eggs in tomato & chilli based gravy that was so addictive. Believe me, you just won't leave your bowl of rice plain without scooping the delicious gravy back onto your bowl. We had 3 big crayfish and these meat were tender and went easy to de-shell with the forks.

Sambal Crayfish - $26

Not the usual Dou Miao I had that was in little stalks. This was the bigger version of Dou Miao and was stirred fried with minced garlic.

Dou Miao - $8

Awesome minced meat egg we had! Love its fluffiness and adequate amount of meat stuffing in it. Though egg is a common home cook dish, once a while we will still order this as we will never get such texture of egg if we do it at home. Cze Char Stall's egg has always been much better as they have a better wok and flame power to achieve such delicious fluffy egg.

Minced Meat Egg - $8
No doubt about them being reputable and popular in the Market. If Zai Shun is closed, Rong Cheng Delight can be a good alternative if you want to have some "Fishy Eats".

The Tiramisu Hero

Back to this familiar place after about 5 years and still feel that the environment is still as cosy with no major change in the furnishings as well as decorations.

Interior of The Tiramisu Hero

The Interior was still as living and Instagram-worthy. If you are somewhere around the area and looking for a cafe with a comfortable setting, you may want to head over to The Tiramisu Hero and enjoy the vibe there.

Comfortable and Cosy Place

With the main course ordered, the bowl of mushroom soup and a glass of beverage like Honey Lemon cost us $6.50 in total. The glass of Honey Lemon was served with reusable stainless steel straw and tasted refreshing.

Honey Lemon - $6.50 (Cold)

Suitable for Vegetarians. The chunky mushroom soup was velvety and creamy. This fresh button mushroom soup was served with garlic bread.

Chunky Mushroom Soup - $6.50

The presentation of the Mee Hoon Kueh was eye-catching. These handmade noodles were tossed in their in-house signature sauce and topped with the crispy fried egg in a cracker shape. It also contained anchovies and chopped chives.

Mee Hoon Kueh - $12.90

Other ingredients include mushrooms and meat. Mee Hoon Kueh can be served in classic or vegetarian options. Vegetarian options are available with broccoli, mushrooms and minced vegan meat.

The pieces of Mee Hoon Kueh

The presentation of Tiramisu remains in a glass jar with its opening wrapped in some brown paper. The traditional Italian Tiramisu is a combination of espresso and alcohol. Therefore this original Classic does contain alcohol and caffeine

Momma Hero Classic Original - $7.50

Over the years, we have tried numerous Classic Tiramisu in Singapore, no doubt The Tiramisu Hero serves Tiramisu as their star dessert, but the taste is not the best that we have tried so far.

Last Updated 20th July 2017

A few years ago when I was nearby for dinner, I have passed by The Tiramisu Cafe and had always wanted to go there but have forgotten all about it until recently when I was back nearby for dinner.

The Tiramisu Hero

The Tiramisu Hero is known for their wide varieties of Tiramisu kept in jar form from Kaya to Baileys favour. Besides getting these jar directly from the store, you can order online via their website.

Signboard
With a whimsical interior, the place was cozy and fun. It gave an entire different dining environment. It looks as if the ladders are against gravity as they were seen hanging from the ceiling with small like light bulbs coiled around it.

The Tiramisu Hero
The drawings on the wall of Tiramisu Hero only comes in Black and white color. Even the menu is also painted on the wall.

On the Ceiling
Nearer to the entrance, enjoy a range of display that are up for sale. Grab items like maps, shirts, cups from the merchandise corners.

Merchandise Corner
Magnets, Tote Bags and plush toys are also available.

Stuck Shop

Come! Head over to the counter and have a photo with the Tiramisu Hero.

The Tiramisu Hero

Interior was simple with grey cement screed walls, however, made more funkier with Sir Antonio presence.

The Tiramisu Hero's Head (Side View)
The Tiramisu Hero let gave us the feeling of coziness and unpretentious environment.

The Tiramisu Hero's Head (Front View)

Interesting Coffee Machine
Their Signature Tiramisu is served in Jar, sealed at the opening to prevent moisture. The layered of lady's fingers were well soaked with cappuccino flavours and softened to the correct sponge cake-liked texture, welled play with an adequate amount of Mascarpone Cheese drizzled with semi-sweet choco powder.

Tiramisu
It's been a while we have Holicks and kind of lost touch to its taste, thus we ordered the Ice Blended Holicks. Drink was rather diluted and nothing in special.

Ice Blended Ho! Ho! Holicks - $8.90
We were only here after dinner, so we decided to have some desserts and tested their waffles. Waffles were not too bad, served in four quarters sprinkled with icing powder and coated with maple syrup. Vanilla soft serve was quite disappointing as it has traces of not 100% well formed thus its get melted quickly and texture was not as smooth as the usual soft serve.

Belgian Waffles with Vanilla Soft Serve $7 + $4
I find this place quite Instagram-worthy and the environment really amused me. Comparing food wise and ambiance, I will prefer the latter as food was quite standard besides their specialties of Tiramisu in Glass Jars. Perhaps having not tried the meals courses here, it will give be a good reason to be back here again!

Lay Eng Lor Mee | Laksa | Prawn Noodle

Popping by Lay Eng Lor Mee while running errand around that area as we heard that the Lor Mee has a pretty high rating in the media platform. On that morning, there were already a number of patrons enjoying their bowl of Lor Mee on the table.

Stall of Lay Eng Lor Mee | Laksa | Prawn Noodle

While I reached the place, I understand that Lay Eng sells different dishes on different days of the week from Monday to Saturday ranging from Lor Mee, Laksa, Pork Ribs Prawn Mee and Prawn Mee.

Menu for the Week

The braised sauce was not very strong as it lacked the traditional five-spice powder and herbal taste that I preferred. Nonetheless, the taste is still within expectation. The ingredients include braised pork belly, beansprouts, Ngoh Hiong and fried fish. The fried fish was good and tender.

Lor Mee - $4 (Small)

While the bigger portion of $5 has more ingredients like increased pork belly and fried fish. The fried fish was cut into smaller portions and placed in a separate bowl instead.

Lor Mee - $5 (Big)

Since this is an industrial area, it's less likely that I will be back in a short while. However, I still hope that I will have that chance to try other of Lay Eng's dishes.

Kim Eng Chicken Rice

Curious about the high google rating, we decided to have chicken rice for our lunch despite the recent news about shortage of chickens. Kim Eng Chicken Rice serves traditional Taste of Hainanese Chicken Rice and is located in NEWest.

We order 2 sets of set B with 1 set have Chicken liver added at $1. Set B comes with the usual Chicken Rice with Soup and additional Kai Lan with a braised egg.

2 Sets of Chicken Rice Set B - $6

Rice was fragrant and pretty ordinary. Soup was nice to drink too. The plate of chicken rice was served with some cucumber slices as well as a piece of slice tomato.

Chicken Rice with Soup

Blanched Kai Lan was topped with fried shallot and drenched with some soy sauce. It was crunchy in with vibrant leafy green.

Kai Lan & Braised Egg

Chicken was juicy, smooth and tender with its light soy sauce.

Hainanese Chicken

To avoid lunch crowd, it will be better to be there earlier.

Liang Liang Fried Carrot Cake

If you are looking for the stalls to try out in Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Center, Liang Liang Fried Carrot Cake is one of the recommended stalls. You will never go wrong with their plate of Fried Carrot Cake.

Stall of Liang Liang Fried Carrot Cake

The black version of Fried Carrot Cake has a nostalgic taste. The charred taste couple with bits of radish as well as the sweet dark sauce reminds me of that flavours and taste that I used to have.

Fried Carrot Cake (Black) - $4

The carrot cake was topped with spring onions and texture was soft. I love the moist, strong garlicky, sweet egg taste with Chai Poh flavours.

Black Carrot Cake

The familiar taste and the sweet Black Carrot Cake style has fit my liking. Although its a one man show, the orders were quick to serve. I will be back again.
