Five Star Dim Sum

While many have been talking about this Dim Sum place situated in the industrial estate for a while, we decided to visit the place after a few months. Five Star Dim Sum place was relatively easy to locate with a helpful security guard indicating the way.

The flooring and setting of the Dim Sum place is totally nostalgic and kind of brought me back into my childhood days. Everything was like sitting in a time machine back in the 80s.

Entrance of Five Star Dim Sum

One of the staples from Five Star will be their crusty Polo Pau. The exterior was crumby and fragrant.

Po Lo Pau 叉烧菠萝包 - $2.50

As you pulled open the Polo Pau, the sweet savoury chopped pieces of Char Siu were revealed.

Fillings

The porridge was smooth and coupled with a generous amount of ingredients. It might be a bit bland for some but adding some condiments and seasonings from the station will help.

Century Egg Pork Congee 皮蛋猪肉粥 - $4

Yummy

Only a few places would have sold this Cheong fun. The thin sheets of rice rolls wrapped up the crispy rolls and drenched in the sauce.

Crispy Shrimp Cheong Fun 米网一品肠粉 - $5.50

Basically, if you like to have a bit of everything, Ting Zai Congee is the best choice as it is filled with ingredients like peanuts, fish, pork, century egg etc.

Ting Zai Congee 状元艇仔粥 - $4.50

The salad prawn dumplings were crispy on the outside and we enjoyed the delicious plump prawns.

Salad Prawn Dumplings 沙律虾角 - $4.50

The smooth and thin sheet rolls encase the sweet savoury Char Siew with the sweet soy sauce featuring the Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun.

The deep-fried radish cake was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Love the taste and texture.

Steamed Prawn Siew Mai's meat was pretty well seasoned and moist. These lovely Siew Mais were topped with a striking red wolfberry.

Chicken Feet was sweetly coated in its sauce coupled with black pepper. It could be softer in texture.

Black Pepper Chicken Feet 黑椒凤爪 - $4

The BBQ Char Siew Pau was fluffy and the texture was soft. The fillings of BBQ Char Siew Pau were sweet and chopped into small chunks.

BBQ Char Siew Pau 蚝皇叉烧包 - $3.50

Braised Pork Buns were standard fare. The meat was tough and not juicy. Its taste was monotone and not fragrant.

Braised Pork Buns 扣肉包 - $4

It's always best to eat these XLBs while they are hot. The soup encased in the buns was sweet and piping hot. The texture of the Bao Skin and meat was fine.

Xiao Long Bao 小笼包 - $4

Fresh prawn beancurd rolls were yummy!

Fresh Prawn Beancurd Rolls 鲜虾腐皮卷- $4.50

Claypot Rice was a non-greasy version and lacked the aroma. Nonetheless, they still taste decent with pork and sausages.

Claypot Pork Rice 沙煲腊味饭  - $6

The taste was commendable with hints of salted egg among the piping hot custard cream. These buns were light and fluffy.

HK Salted Egg Custard Buns 港式金牌流沙包 - $3.50

Not many places offer Hong Kong Style Steamed Mushroom Buns. The outlook of the buns looks exactly like mushrooms. It comes in a basket of 3 and filled with mushroom fragrance. The buns were airy and soft, stuffed with aromatic chopped mushrooms.

For the price and standard, I do not mind returning back again for more. They have more than just 1 outlet in Singapore and it will be best to visit the branch at our convenience.

The order system can be out of control at times as customers were paged to pick up the food from the kitchen counter one by one using buzzer system.

This system is somehow not feasible or friendly as we tend to order a lot of items in a go and we were paged to collect the items shortly after we sit down for many rounts which can be quite disturbing to our meals. To make things worse,  sometimes a few customers gathered over the counter for collection and it can be pretty confusing too. Well, on the other hand, there are no service charges rendered, so we can not complain much.

Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle

Despite having a few outlets around the island, the one that I frequently patronised will be this stall at Ayer Rajah Hawker Center. The stall is manned by a friendly couple and the food is value for money in terms of the portion as well as taste.

Stall of Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle

My favourite order will be none other than their Soy Sauce Chicken Hor Fun for they taste so good to me. The skin was glistering brown in colour and the soy sauce flavours penetrates well into the meat with the right sweetness and texture.

Soy Sauce Chicken Hor Fun - $3.50

The smoothness of taste with tender chicken paired with the bowl of herbal soup and Hor Fun was my satisfying meal. Its definite that I will be returning for more.

Restoran Hook Sang Seafood 福生海鲜楼

Special thanks to the organisers who went to the place earlier to chope a table for the festive night despite the bad weather and the team who went in together amongst the drizzling rain.

Hook Sang Seafood Restaurant

The Prosperity toss that we will never miss out on when it comes to the Chinese New Year gathering. Strips of raw fish mixed with shredded vegetables as well as a variety of condiments and sauces. The style of Yu Sheng in Malaysia seems different to what we have in Singapore, nonetheless, they still look beautiful in rainbow colours.

Lucky YeeSheng 七彩鸿运齐捞生

After the toss, our orders doles out from the kitchen one after another despite the crowd. The mixed meat bean curd looked yummy with blanched vegetables at the side. The big piece of circular bean curd was topped with minced meat, preserved vegetables and spring onions. We enjoyed the crispy exterior of the bean curd cradling the soft silky and wobbly interior. Yums!

Mixed Meat Bean Curd 菜香豆腐 - RM 16

Luscious Dongbo Pork was generously paired with its sweet savoury sauce with stalks of blanched vegetables. The pork was very well braised to the point that it disintegrates easily with a slight force from our utensils. It's meaty but not greasy and the braised taste was prominent.

Dongbo Pork 东波肉 - RM 30

Up next on the table, we had Steamed Red Grouper steamed in Hong Kong Style. Red Grouper tasted fresh and the meat was sweet and tender. This cooking method is preferred as it brings up the freshness of the fish, also with the simplest ingredients like soy sauce and spring onions, they taste best.

Red Grouper 红斑

The sweet coated and well marinated Red Wine sauce over the fried Pork Ribs was a crowd-pleaser. Though it was a Red Wine ingredient used we can't tell that from the taste.

Red Wine with Pork Ribs 红酒排骨 - RM 18 / 25 / 32

The Yam Ring was decent, topped with Gong Bao Flavoured meat with spring onions and onions. The dish was decked up by a bed of crispy fried Bee Hoon.

Yam Ring 佛钵飘香- RM 28

The Cantonese Style Mee was not too bad. It was crispy and drenched with its savoury gravy with loads of ingredients like egg, fishcakes, prawns, vegetables and pork.

Cantonese Style Mee 滑蛋生面 - RM 8 / 13 / 18

Braised Bee Hoon with crab was decent too. The Bee Hoon was moist and a good pairing with the Crab.

Crab Bee Hoon 螃蟹米粉

Salted Egg Crab was not a bad choice too. Love the thin layer of salted egg rubbed onto the shell of the crab. Fragrant and not overpowering. The crustacean flesh on the other hand was plump and yummy.

Salted Egg Crab 咸蛋螃蟹

Like many Cze Char places in Malaysia, you get to choose your choice of seafood before they cook. For this instance, you get to choose the fish that was placed on a bed of ice.

You can pick your fish here

Thinking of making a trip down? Here's the menu for your reference.

Seven Oaks

It has been many years since I last visited Seven Oaks. Due to its opening hours, we had given this cafe a miss many times while we were in Johor Bahru. The few storeys high cafe was still as spectacular. It also has an internal elevator that carries patrons and staff between the levels of the building.

Elevator

The interior is well kept and gives us a luxurious as well as a comfortable environment to dine in,

Level 2 of the Bakery Cafe

Besides having a fantastic food menu, they have interesting beverages in their menu from coffee to tea as well as some drinks exclusively mixed by Seven Oaks.

Beverages Menu

The Sparkling Watermelon Cucumber was refreshing and it is made up of watermelon and Cucumber Syrup mixed with Sparkling Jasmine Tea.

Yuzu Osmanthus was fragrant and was made up of Yuzu Puree, Osmanthus Syrup with Sparkling Jasmine Tea.

Lychee Rose Earl Grey is made up of Lychee Puree in Rose Syrup as well as Earl Grey tea.

Sparkling Passion Fruit & Fig comprises Passion Fruit Puree, Fig Puree, and Pink Grapefruit Syrup with Sparkling Jasmine Tea

We order the following food items and shared them among ourselves.

Our Order

Have you eaten Tacro? It's a hybrid of Taco and Croissant. There are 3 types to choose from on the menu, lamb, chicken or beef and we had beef. With the texture of a croissant, sandwiched with minced beef, lettuce, tomato salsa and spring onions.

Beef Tacro - RM 20

The grilled Chicken chop was tender and yummy. It was lightly charred and had a crispy exterior. The dish was paired with garden salad and fries. Brown sauce was given. However, we topped up an additional dollar for Salted Egg Sauce.

Grilled Chicken Chop - RM 24

We had Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak with butterfly pea coconut rice. It was undoubtedly fragrant with its fried chicken, ikan bilis peanuts as well as its coconut rice. The dish was paired with keropok, cucumber, hard-boiled egg and yummy sambal chilli.

Nasi Lemak Fried Chicken - RM 22

Pairing the Shakshuka Baked Eggs with Pita Bread. The Sauce includes chicken cubes, tomato sauce, cheese, capsicum and egg.

Shakshuka Baked Eggs - RM 25

While their bakery items were eye-catching, I will like to have them on my next visit.

The majestic facade of Seven Oaks had just fooled me. We were astounded by the grand appearance of this 3 Storey high building for this definitely look more like a hotel than anywhere else for F & B.

Seven Oaks

The Interior of the building was kind of posh and up scale, welcoming customers with generous and spacious looking tiles, sheltering them with cooling Air con and away from the scotching hot weather at its 1st Level. The first level is where the bakery is! You can look through the glass panels, admiring the pastry chef / bakers at work. It's also a place for walk in customers who want to buy some breads or cakes off from the shelves.

Ground Floor
Dining area will be at the upper floor and you can take the flight of stairs up there or by the elevator.

Light and refreshing with alternate layers of Charcoal flavours with fresh cream. The cake is topped with a little slice of strawberry, a blueberry and lychee.

Charcoal Lychee - RM 8.40

Mango Charlotte was not too bad either. Fragrant and filled with fruity flavours from the mango cubes with sweetness. If I were to choose among these 3, I will vote for this.

Mango Charlotte - RM 14.70

Colorful things make one's mood brighten up and I'm glad that that there isn't any strong artificial flavours from the colors layers with alternate fresh cream layer.

Rainbow Cake - RM 12.60
A mix of apple, cucumber and soda. Its abit of soury due to that green apples are used.

Apple Frazzle - RM 13.50

Types of Yoghurt like Mango, Strawberry, Blueberry and Banana for us to choose from. Having Strawberry smoothies as my comfortable choice, I find it a total pleasure to have enjoy such a glass of drink.

Yogurt Smoothies - RM 14.90
Slightly bitter taste with its chocolate fudge that spelt out the original flavour of it. The drink is just another cooler to beat the heat outside of the building. Whipped cream and preserved cherry had topped the drink, what's more, the drink was served in an elegant glass to make everything looked nice.

Chocolate Smoothies - RM 15.90
Service here was not too prompt but I wish to be back again to enjoy their main courses for their environment is good and relaxing.
