Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap

While my last visit was in 2016, it's time to revisit for we were here by chance while waiting for the heavy rain to stop. Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap was recommended by the Michelin Guide in 2019.

Stall of Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap

The soup was tasty with a herb taste. The dipping chilli was both spicy and tangy, great for pairing with the braised items. The braised duck was decent, however, we felt that the innards were not handled thoroughly as it left us with some bitter aftertaste.

Kway Chap Set for 2 with Braised Duck

Heading to Zion Riverside Food Centre, we decided to give the usual Char Kway Teow Stall a miss and go for something different. Reading the Signboard twice to confirm what I had misread during my first glimpse as I had associated the name with Boon Tiong Kee, the famous chicken rice restaurant. There is a few Kway Chap stall but being the typical Singaporean, we joined the stall with the queue as compared to the other which had none.

Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap

A good wait for about 20 minutes in the queue before we got our set of Kway Chap for 2 pax at $10. Portion of the set looks appetizing with big bowls of Kway in brown soup and ingredients being stacked up nicely with 2 kinds of chilli provided. The portion was worth $10 indeed.

Kway Chap Set for 2 - $10

No pork belly and no skin on the platter and in fact the interesting find in the platter was pork trotter meat which was so tender and served in smashed form among the savoury sweet braised sauce. Braised eggs, tender duck meat, intestines and Tau Gua was provided. I would say that I'm rather impress by the stack of food which was neatly placed in a sequence besides having a well-prepared portion of innards without leaving any trace of smell.

Kway Chap Ingredients

I love the Kway for its soup has a slight taste of herbs and is not salty. The portion is definitely not for the baby's stomach :).

It will be good to drop by again and have a taste of its competing stall right on the left side.

Ba Jie Bah Kut Teh 八戒肉骨茶

If you have been to KSL City Mall, Ba Jie Bah Kut Teh is just a stone's throw away from the place. The stall name reminds me of the main character, "Zhu Bajie" in the novel journey to the west representing a pig.

The dining area was big and airy. Not only that, we had received friendly service from them.

Upon making orders with the staff, food items will be prepared on the spot over the fire. The aromatic herbal broth fragrance made us more hungry while with the air filled with the smell waiting for our food.

We took a look into the kitchen and spotted their pot filled with pork and herbal soup.

Upon ordering, the kitchen helpers started to prepare our orders.

After some recommendations and discussion, we decided on these dishes.

Love the fact that the place was not overly commercialized. Knowing that we were there to try out the food, they suggest us to order a personal portion even though we are in a group. The Bah Kut Teh was flavourful and pack of herbal taste to my liking.

Salted Vegetables were topped with fried pork lard cubes, enhancing their flavour.

The Dry Bak Kut Teh was flavourful and topped with shredded cuttlefish and the dish was prepared with cut lady's fingers.

I don't usually take Pork Tendon but the braised sauce was too inviting and I had these smooth "gelatine" texture Sea Cucumber and Pork Tendon glide down my throat in a short time. The braised sauce was perfect for drenching on our bowl of white rice.

The sea cucumber was well-braised and smooth.

You Tiao with Bah Kut Teh Soup is quintessential for enjoying my meal and so to speak, I will find my meal complete with having them soaking up my hot bowl of herbal soup.

Polite and friendly service from the lady. Love that the soup is filled with an herbal taste and strikes a good balance without being too bitter.

As a soup lover, I love that my empty bowl gets filled up from time to time. Really enjoy the kind of service received.

There are many Bah Kut Teh eateries in Malaysia and business is rather competitive. The food from Ba Jie Bah Kut Teh is decent, however, service was outstanding among the rest.

Fika Farmhouse 小田食光

The Fika Farmhouse is a humble and pet-friendly cafe hidden within Johor Bahru city. If you enjoy the laid-back and greenery nature, you will surely enjoy how they integrate these elements into your dining experience.

Fika Farmhouse

The environment was cosy and relaxing. Service, on the other hand, was friendly and accommodating. This place is situated in an open space and can get quite hot in the afternoon. Luckily we were sitting beside the cooler with the constant flow of cool air.

Environment

The Cold Press Juice was a definite saviour to beat the scorching hot weather. The Supercharger indeed perked us up with its chilly and refreshing flavours from pure orange and apple juice.

Supercharger - RM16

Most of us ordered the Supercharger to boost our energy but if you prefer some gasey drinks, they also serve sprite in lemon and mint leave.

Sprite

The colours of the Salad looked inviting. The beautiful bowl of salad is made up of Green Coral, Baby Spinach, mango, pomegranate, walnut, white cheese, tomato salsa, and organic chia seed. This appetiser is finished off by drizzling some lemon vinaigrette.

Mango, Pomegranate & Walnut Salad - Rm 27

The aromatic Truffle Fries are good finger food for sharing while we were waiting for our main dishes. It was generously topped with shaved cheese and the smell of truffle oil was simply irresistible.

Truffle Fries - RM 20

Two big slabs of grilled chicken chop with crispy skin and these boneless chicken thighs can be paired with the choice of smoky black pepper or brown sauce at your preference. The dish comes with 2 sides, roasted vegetables and mashed potatoes.

Grill Chicken Chop - RM 27

Pasta Lover will like to try out their chicken Bolognese. No doubt that the spaghetti may be slightly overcooked, the taste and aroma were good enough to entice us. The dish is served with minced chicken with marinara sauce and topped with Grana Padano.

Chicken Bolognese - RM 24

The dish is a tad spicy with chilli flakes, nonetheless, I love how the Salmon and Mushroom come together with the Spaghetti. Instead of serving the whole piece of Salmon, it was served with cubes, Shimeiji mushroom, Eryngli Mushroom and garlic.

Salmon & Mushroom Aglio Olio - RM 29

We were given 2 slices of Seared Barramundi Fish on top of chickpea, cheery tomato, and zucchini. 3 slices of sourdough were well toasted, and good for dipping into the sauce. A pet peeve is that the dish was on the saltier side.

Seared Barramundi with Chick Pea Ragout - RM 39

Weighing at about 420g, these BBQ Pork Spare Ribs were pretty well served with evenly coated BBQ sauce and served with thick-cut fries as well as some sauerkraut. The meat is tender and falls apart from the bone easily with the slightest effort.

BBQ Pork Spare Ribs - RM 45

All in all, the ambience of Fika Farmhouse scores but the food on the other hand was pretty decent and standard fare.

Warong Pak Sapari Soto & Mee Rebus

Of all these years when you asked around for the Best Mee Soto in Singapore, you will get the same answer on this stall in Adam Road Food Center.

Stall
Stall

They are known for their hearty bowls of Mee Soto with a flavourful broth. With traditional recipes passed down over the years to now, third-generation hawkers.

Mee Soto
Mee Soto - $3.80

Mee Soto is a popular Malay dish with yellow noodles topped with shredded of pieces chicken, spring onions and fried shallots, served in a rich flavourful chicken broth with local spices. I will usually top up my noodles with Bargedil (fried potato), unfortunately, it was not available on that day.

We also ordered the Mee Rebus, the gravy was rather watery and the dish was a standard fare.

Though many said this is the best Mee Soto out of the hawkers in Singapore, I believe there are still your preferred choices to this. Any recommendations?

Posted on 10th March 2016

When we talk about best Mee Soto, this stall in Adam Road Food Centre is never missed out from the list. Given stall name as "Selamat Datang" which means Welcome when translated from Malay Language is very welcoming. It seems that during my last visit it was name as "Amirah & Nur Aniqah Mee Soto & Mee Rebus" instead of "Warong Pak Sapari Mee Soto & Sapari"

Selamat Datang

Soto was opaque brown in color added with shredded chicken, bean sprouts and garnishing like spring and fried onions. It was tasty and flavourful but definitely not the best I ever tasted. On a side note, the taste of the Soto was quite similar to one of the Mee Soto pre pack stock that I got from the Supermarket.

Roast & Coffee - Retro Garden 1968's

Passing by Roast & Coffee numerous times and never got the chance to dine there due to the snaky long queues and limited time we had. Just recently, we were earlier than the queues and got a chance to try out their food.

Restoran Roast  & Coffee

The menu was extensive from Coffee to different varieties of toast

Menu

Condiments and utensils can be self-taken at the side table. Place your desired order via the order chit and hand them to the roaming staff around.

Make your Order

The dining area is located on the upper deck. Wooden flooring and some nostalgic wooden window panel make the place rather laid back.

Dining Floor

You will be spoilt of choices when you are in Roast & Coffee.

That's a lot of food, isn't it?

Food is prepared on the lower deck and transported by a lift pulley to the upper deck.

Preparation Station

If you prefer your beverages in Hong Kong Ice Bath, they have Teh Kopi and Cham (Mixture of Tea & Kopi) available for order.

HK Ice Bath Teh 冰镇奶茶 - RM 8.90

Toast to crispiness and sandwich with a thin block of butter with Kaya evenly spread on the toast.

Double Butter Kaya Toast 双牛油加椰 - RM 3.20

The R&C Big Breakfast Set comes with sausage, hashbrowns, french toast and coleslaw.

R&C Big Breakfast 1968 美式早餐 - RM 13.90

French Toast with Salted Egg caught my eye and that was a good choice as the sauce was not overpowering and adequately placed on the French Toast. It was not greasy and the toast was evenly toasted with egg fragrance.

Salted Egg French Toast 咸蛋法兰西多士 - $8.90

We had another French Toast but of Honey Flavour. The top of the thick french toast was soaked with a puddle of honey. It was not overly sweet

Honey French Toast 蜂蜜法兰西多士 - $6.90

Now I have to agree that Roast & Coffee is one of the popular breakfast spots in Johor Bahru too as I don't mind revisiting them again.

Hui Ji Fish ball Noodle . Yong Tau Fu

Another impromptu meetup over lunch ended me at Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre with a bowl of Fishball noodles as well as a bowl of Yong Tau Fu. For so many times that I have visited this place, I had never tried this stall before.

Stall

Hui Ji is known for its authentic Teochew style of fishball with its consistency in taste.

Our Orders

Having ordered the dry Fishball noodles with Bee Tai Mak, it was well mixed with sauce and the fish ball was bouncy.

Fish Ball Bee Tai Mak - $4 (Big)

The ingredients were pretty generous with lean meat, fish cakes, fish dumplings and fish balls.

Mee Pok Dry

The Yong Tau Fu soup is a good pairing to our bowl of dry noodles. The soup tasted old school and customers can pick their Yong Tau Fu from the stall.

Yong Tau Fu

Though a simple meal, it was satisfying to the tastebuds.
