Mariners' Corner Restaurant

I have never heard of Mariners' Corner Restaurant until they shared that it was previously from Maritime house, serving Hainanese Style Western Food. Since 1984 they have been in the business. The Interior of the dining place was laid back and give an old-school charm feel. However, these indoor dining place was complemented by the outdoor garden seatings on the deck.

These glistering chicken wings were simply good for the starters. They are very addictive and well-marinated. Just alone without the lemon juice and BBQ, these Mexican Wings will do fine.

The 2 slabs of Grilled Pork Chops were well seasoned with LP Sauce and served with slices of roast potatoes, summer salad and Pineapple Relish. The thickness of was meat was quite uniform and well-flavoured without being too greasy.

Grilled Pork Chop

Steak is served in a cast iron hot plate with baked potato and buttered veggies. Such presentation and combination of food are so familiar that they reminded me of Jack's place. There are 4 types of sauces for the steak, namely Black Pepper, Mushroom, Garlic Shallot and BBQ.

N.Z Ribeye Steak

The mushroom sauce goes well with the Ribeye and it was even adorned with a piece of mushroom and English parsley.

The baked potato was soft. The toppings are optional. Like what happens in Jack's Place, Mariners' Corner Restaurant does have servers topping up the condiments like sour cream, spring onions and garlic bits for the potato. For those who prefer to have bacon bits, it may be a little disappointing here instead.

Nonetheless, the doneness of the beef was perfect.

One can top up $5.80 to any main coursed to enjoy a bowl of salad, soup of the day, garlic toasts as well as coffee/tea with dessert. What a classic old-school starter!

Ending the meal, we have a cup of coffee with a piece of almond butter cake.

Looking at their menu, they have attractive lunch sets set differently for each day of the week as well as weekends. There is also one lady server whom I thought that the service was friendly and impeccable. I will be back again for them.

Shi Wei Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken

The Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken stall is one of the stalls that was lined up with a snakey queue during the peak hours. Their menu is rather simple, Soy Sauce Chicken Noodles / Rice, Shredded Chicken and Prawn Wanton Noodles.

Stall of Shi Wei Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken

The plate of Soy Sauce Chicken Noodle is flavourful with a generous amount of soy chicken slathered with the slightly thick sweet soy sauce.

Soy Sauce Chicken Noodle 鼓油鸡面 - $3.50 / $4.50

The chicken was tender and juicy. The noodle was springy and well-tossed with adequate sauce.

Besides having noodles, you can opt to have Soy Sauce on Hor Fun or rice.

Nummun Thai Kitchen

We have cravings for Thai Cuisine from time to time and recently we came across some posting on Nummun Thai Kitchen and did a google on it. To our surprise, the rating is on the high side and we find no reason not to give it a try.

We went at the right hour just slightly before the peak hour when there are still ample of seats around and after settling down in no moment, the place was already full house. Phew! What a relief! The interior is spacious and the furnishings are rather simple with some Thai dishes poster up on one side of the wall.

While I'm expecting some sweet-tasting syrup drinks here, I was quite surprised that the drinks were in fact not sweet and on the contrary, Lemongrass is a tad on the bitter side.

Their Phad Thai was flavourful and had a significant egg taste in it. Mixing it with the peanuts, chilli flakes and lime juice elevates the dish. Unlike other places, the sweetness was well-controlled here and not too greasy.

The Steel Pot Vermicelli Prawn is flavourful with a distinctive peppery taste and mushroom fragrance. Vermicellis is springy and as a whole, the dish was better than our expectations.

We came here for this! This Thai Crab Meat Omelette dish was made famous in the name after Jay Fai Bangkok got a Michelin Star on this. This dish was made up of a generous amount of fluffy egg and chunks of plump crab meat.

Love this pillowy soft and smooth texture that cradles the sweet juicy and succulent meat. Once you pop them into your mouth, it disintegrates.

Pandan chicken come in a plate of 4 and the tender chickens were wrapped under the leaves. The dish is pretty normal to me as the taste was kind of bland to me.

Moo Ping is well-marinated and the meat was tender with a slightly charred taste.

Simply love the authentic and homely Thai Food here. The pricing of the dishes was not at the high side too, in fact the pricing is pretty reasonable.  I will be back soon for other dishes.

Ajumma's

Passing by Ajumma's unkempt times, we finally step our food into the eating place and check out what is the hype about. The eating place was usually full and with many patrons joining the snaky queues every time when I pass by. We were lucky to have the last table even out of their peak hours.

Ajumma's is a casual Korean restaurant established in 2014 that sells hearty food from the markets and streets of Korea. The seats in Funan are rather limited and we were given a 45 minutes dining session.

Ajumma's Jjajangmyeon comes with chunks of braised pork fried with fermented black bean paste slathered over the handmade noodles.

The sauce was adequate for the portion of noodles in the bowl topped with shredded cucumber as well as green peas. The braised pork was soft and tender, and went well with the chewy noodles. This bowl of noodles come with 4 side dishes.

Lian Huat Seafood

During the Covid period, I get to know of Lian Huat Seafood for there are so many live streams on their quality and fresh seafood. They are founded in 1988, starting as a premium seafood wholesaler.

While passing by the industrial coffeeshop the last round queuing up for Mirai-Ya, I have already decided that I should give their stall a try.

Its hard to miss out Lian Huat Seafood stall for the striking blue signage and the bright signage light caught everyone's attention upon looking into the coffeeshop. The queue, as usual, is always snaky.

Read on to check out what we ordered.

The double fish soup was cloudy and filled with generous ingredients like cabbages and tomato with some seaweed as well as spring onions. The broth is flavorful with hints of sole fish and for the sliced fish, Batang Fish was used.

Double Fish Soup 双鱼汤 - $7 (Small)

The fried fish was separated from the soup bowl. If you will like to have additional order of their Special Fried Fish, it will cost another $3 per bowl. Unlike the usual fish soup I had, these golden brown fried fish surface were more textural.

There were only 3 pieces of Batang Fish found in my bowl of Double Fish Soup. I thought that amount is rather miserable for a $7 bowl.

The Red Grouper Sliced Fish Soup was chunky and fresh.

If you will like to have additional fiery kick to these white meat, dipped into their sambal chilli with ikan bills.

We opted the Yam Rice to pair along with the bowls of fish soup. The Yam rice was sufficiently fragrant with mushrooms and cabbages but still lack a strong smell in it.

Taking in consideration that Lian Huat is a wholesaler, the quality and freshness of fish is no doubt remarkable but if the amount of fish can be increased, consumers like us will be happier too.

8 Degrees 8度空間

While the price of air tickets to Taiwan is soaring, it makes sense to enjoy some Taiwanese food here to satisfy the craving.

Oysters are plump and the chitterlings given were generous. Topped their bowl of Mee Sua with some vinegar and chilli to slurp everything up!

Oyster & Chitterling Mee Sua 综合面线 - $6.80

The Stewed Pork Belly Rice style comprises a mixture of lean and fatty meat accompanied by braised egg and pickles. As much as I love Stewed Pork Belly Rice, the braised taste was on the bland side.

Stewed Pork Belly Rice 八度卤肉饭 - $6

The Scallion Oil Chicken Rice was flavorful and yummy with a generous amount of scallion and tender chicken. Totally in love with its sweet and savoury sauce.

King Oyster Mushrooms were sliced and marinated, it gave a tad of spicy mala kick and made a good appetizer. We love the unique way of how this dish was prepared.

What's visiting Taiwanese café without ordering their Milk Tea? Sugar level can be chosen and grass jelly were smooth while the pearls were commendable with chewy texture.

The egg roll had a soft wrapped cradling the generous amount of pork floss.

These Chitterlings were deep fried to their crispiness garnished by the shredded refreshing cucumbers. Dipping them into the roasted sesame sauce would enhance the taste of the bites.

We had another side dish with pork floss too. The brinjals were battered and showered with pork floss and some cut spring onions. The pillowy soft texture was inviting.
