Hwa Heng Beef Noodle

Do you remember the old Odeon beef noodle from Bain street across the Odeon Cinema from 1976 to the 1980s? 

The 74 years old traditional Beef Noodle ceased operations, closing down its last stall in June 2021 due to the pandemic and also partly due to the 2nd generation owner's old age. Afraid that such a traditional recipe in the family will be gone, the 3rd generation took over and revive the family business. Therefore the legacy lives on!

The stall is said to be opened daily from 10am to 2pm, since we are early, there were only 1 to 2 pax in front of us. We got ourselves both soup and dry versions of the beef noodles.

Our Orders

Simply love this dry version of beef noodles for its sauce is thick and luscious over the thick white noodle. This gravy is robust and flavourful topped with blanched beansprouts. The generous amount of beef paired with the lime juice, Chinchalok (Fermented Shrimps) chilli was heavenly.  The beef slices were tender and I really enjoyed the bowl, not forgetting the bowl of soup that comes along with the meal, it was also full of beef flavours.

The soup version is as awesome. The thin-sized slices of beef were blanched in the beef stock, they were cooked perfectly to soft and tender and placed on the noodles.

The stock has spices and herbs which make a sweet savoury taste with no herbal overtones. The bowl comes with 5 beef balls and overall there was no gamey taste.

If you are more adventurous, you may want to try out the bigger bowl where you have an assortment of beef items.

Mix Beef Noodle - $12 

I opted for the dry version and the noodle bowl was as big as the soup bowl. The soup was filled with a handful portion of beansprouts and mixed beef items like meatballs, stomach, lungs, tendons etc.

The pet peeve was that I could not enjoy the soup as beansprouts taste had overwhelmed the sweet ans savoury beef soup.

This is arguably the best beef noodle that I have in Singapore so far.  We are so lucky that this gem has been rediscovered!

The Kitchen Table [Media Invitation]

Was lucky to be invited by InstaSG to visit Kitchen Table in W Singapore for their cuisine in collaboration with Nikon Singapore. Through this event, we had the opportunity to hands-on on the Nikon Z30 and sharing sessions by Nikon Representatives.

It was a lively and fun learning evening meeting the food-grammers, not to mention that we get to know more into depth about how W Singapore plans their menu and prepares the items.

Besides that, we had the chance in getting close up with the chef at work and witnessing their professionalism.

First up, we were greeted with this welcome drink. It was a good kick start with such cooling beverage to perk us up before a good spread of scrumptious meal.

A good fresh start to the dinner with healthy Kale topped with grated Pecorino. Garlic-thyme Croutons and Bacon Powder enrich the overall taste.

Whet my appetite for more! Certainly, this has a different texture from the previous salad. Sweet & crunchy dish comprising of Red and White Belgian Endives. Candied Pecans, Green Apple, Blue Cheese Dressing, Arugula and Roquefort Cheese.

Colourful & Vibrant bowl that caught the eyes immediately. Ingredients include Tofu, Avocado, Radish, Cucumbers, Seaweed, and Purple Cabbage. Mix them well with the sauce given and into the rice.

A fresh blend of Australia Butternut beautifully adorns with outstanding Coconut Milk with Sea Salt Foam. Definitely, the best I have eaten. Ingredients include Pumpkin, Coconut Milk Foam, Salted Butter, Shallots, and Thyme.

The bite was so special that I had forgotten that I was actually eating mushrooms instead of meat. The combination of ingredients such as avocado, Burnt Sweet Chili, and Citrus was perfect for these mushrooms.

The prawns were crispy fried and evenly coated in Bonito Aioli and Tobiko Roe.

Watching the chef hand stretch the dough, smearing the base and throwing the ingredients on top with Mozzarella, Red Onions and Grilled Chicken Breast. Finally, send it to the oven. The end product was simply delicious with the house-made espresso-peach barbecue sauce.

The ultimate combination of aromatic spices working in tandem. Ingredients include Raita, Papadam, and Pickles.

Lamb Dum Biryani

Succulent Pork Pancetta served with Chickpea Ragout, Parmesan Reggiano, and pickled red onions with some basil oil.

Pork Tenderloin

A medley of seafood with Squid, Shrimp, Octopus, Scallops, Mussels, and Barramundi pasta cooked Al Dente with Lemon Beurre Blanc Sauce.

A different rendition of Singapore's most famous dish with Lobsters. It is accompanied by the Deep Fried Chinese Buns aka Man Tou, scrumptious Chili and Egg Gravy.

These addictive bite-size beef cubes with really good "Wok Hei". Once you start, you can't stop. The dish is garnished with slices of fried garlic, sesame seeds and fresh cress.

Refreshing treat in ending our meal. We had lemon curd adorn with meringue and hazelnut shortbread as well as Yuzu Sorbet.

The killer dessert you have to try yourself. Love the Caramelized Puff Pastry with salted Caramel, Hazelnut Praline whipped chantilly and its salted caramel ice cream.

Ishiro Fusion Bowl [Media Invitation]

Ishiro Fusion Bowl at Timbre+ One North is housed in a mobile van but it is actually permanently situated there. There are a few outlets of Ishiro Fusion Bowl in Singapore and I guess this in One-North looks rather cute.

I visited Ishiro during the lunch hours and was amazed by the non-stopping orders going out of the kitchen, be it taking away or dining in. The fast pace of serving was creditable. Besides serving just rice bowls, they have Udon bowls as well as finger bites.

The 5 pieces of Tempura prawns were perfectly deep fried to golden brown with its crispy bread crumbs exterior. Simply love its non-greasiness despite going through the deep frying process.

Enjoy the light and crispiness of these prawns with a dip in the mayonnaise sauce given.

The Breaded Oysters were served on a plate of 5 too. The exterior crispiness was laudable and likewise, though these items were deeply fried, they are not greasy.

Enjoy the crispy bite down from the breaded crust into the juicy plump oyster that is encased within. There is n funny smell and its all good.

A thick slab of breaded fried chicken was cut into pieces with a generous amount of mentaiko sauce slathered on top of it. It was then torched under the flame. The rich creamy sauce was sprinkled with roasted and black sesame seeds to elevate its flavour. Breaded chicken katsu was tender and moist.

The Onsen Egg and tempura crispy bits do their part in making up yummy the bowl of Mentaiko Chicken Katsu Bowl.

Thinly sliced pieces of cooked beef that are not fatty nor oily and consist of sweet marinade. The caramelised onions added a touch of sweetness to the tender sliced beef. The Suki Ya Beef Bowl is coupled with crispy tempura bites and a wobbly runny egg.

The combination of smooth and rough texture from this fusion bowl of food is simply yummy. Not to mention that having the runny egg mixed in the rice tasted good too.

The hearty and filling meal served by Ishiro Fusion Bowl is of quality and hearty which is definitely worth a return trip here.

Tong Fong Fatt Hainanese Chicken Rice

Tong Fong Fatt Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice has a number of outlets on the island. The stall is easily spotted through the glass display with rows of chicken carcasses hanging neatly.

Our Order

Chicken is smooth and tender soaking up with some flavoursome soy sauce. Besides the sweet nature of the succulent meat, the secret of being popular among the diners is perhaps the use of this fragrant sauce.

The sauce is light and distinct. The chicken was decked up with slices of cucumber and garnished with coriander.

The rice did not disappoint too. It was fluffy and fragrant, with the right amount of greasiness.

The soup is light and fragrant with some sweet taste. I had it added with coriander to perk up my meal.

No doubt that the chicken rice tasted not bad, the price is on a steeper side. While there are so many chicken rice stalls available, there are bound to have better ones out there with a pocket friendlier pricing.

Yan Ji Seafood Soup [Media Invite] [Closed]

Have you heard of the famous Seafood Soup humble hawker stall in the Former Woodlands Food Center? I still remember those days when I travelled there just to have this umami-filled soup. 

Yan Ji Seafood Soup was established in 1984 and its first seafood soup stall is located at the former Woodlands Food Center.

Just recently in September, Yanji Seafood Soup opened a new outlet in the bustling Bedok Central to commemorate its four decades of soupy goodness. The man behind all this is actually Mr Chia Tok Whee, the current second-generation owner who took over his late father's business to fulfil his father's dream of expanding their family heritage dishes across Singapore. 

Food Hub

Diners get to choose from a menu of 6 items with:

  • The Premium Seafood Soup ($32),
  • Crayfish Seafood Soup with Dory, Batang or Red Grouper ($14/$16/$18), 
  • Red Grouper Seafood Soup ($14), 
  • Batang Seafood Soup ($12), 
  • Dory Seafood Soup ($7.50/$9.50)
  • Deep Fried Prawn/Ngoh Hiang ($8). 

Add-ons include abalone ($4), scallop ($2.50) fish maw ($2), Batang Fish Slices (5 slices for $6) and Red Grouper Slices (4 slices for $6).  

Yan Ji Seafood Soup

The homemade deep-fried Prawn Rolls aka "Ngoh Hiong" was painstakingly made from scratch. Minced meat and prawns were mixed together with other ingredients. Afterwards, they were wrapped under the beancurd skin, forming a roll and deep fried.

Pulling out a segment of the Prawn Roll and we can see the chopped pieces of chestnuts with the minced meat. With the crispy wrap and its sufficient hints of 5 spice powder dipping into the house chilli sauce, it's so yummy.

Ngoh Hiong

The Dory Seafood soup is Yan Ji's best seller. It has slices of dory fish, prawns and minced pork. The soup base is very flavourful and packed with a good sole fish taste. The natural sweetness from the minced meat, seafood, mushroom and tomato produces robust flavours of seafood soup.

Their rich and flavourful broth is slow-cooked for up to 6 hours, using premium seafood ingredients.

Besides the soup that caused my addiction, the next culprit in line is the mass of finely minced meat that contained a unique flavour.

Each and every ingredient used is premium and with quality uncompromised. The prawns used were fresh, plump and succulent.
