Wicked Greens

Eating healthy and clean have been seen as an increasing trend in recent years when people are more health conscious. We decided to grab something healthy and headed over to Wicked Greens which is located just outside West Coast Plaza. The location was rather obvious as they are just right beside the overhead bridge and beside the Taxi Stand.

Over at this corner, the wall surface was entirely decorated by a bed of roses with its business name "Wicked Greens" lit up. Furnishings in the eating place was simple with some tables and chairs while the theme colour is majority made up of romantic pink.

Their homemade barley was unique, not too sweet with hints of refreshing lemon taste and natural sweetness from red dates. The drink is slightly brown in colour and you can enjoy some pearl barley at the bottom of the glass.

After some consideration and recommendation by the counter auntie, we finally made up our choices and had our orders.

The Keto Friendly Salad was made up of beef brisket, avocado, 2 sous vide eggs, chicken breast, roman lettuce and toasted almonds. The portion of meat was generous and tender. The beef brisket was flavourful and the salad base dressing was good. The eggs were perfectly done.

The presentation of the Pasta with broccoli, cherry tomatoes, corn kernels and sous vides egg looks catchy to the eyes because of their colour combination. While the crispy fried soft shell crab was served on a separate plate accompanied by some fiery chilli sauce.

Famous JB Firewokz 新山101小厨

Revisiting this Cze Char place among the industrial place and was surprised that we were entertained by a magician while waiting for our food to be served. It was an unusual approach for a place like this as we normally only see entertainers like this during big-scale dinner events.

They do offer Fresh Avocado Juice on their menu now and if you like Avocado Drink, you will like this too.

JB 1010 Barley & Avocado Juice
Barley & Avocado Juice - $2 & $6

Fu Yong Omelette was nicely done and different from the usual ones I had. They have crab meat, mushrooms, carrot etc in it. The texture was fluffy and not too oily.

While this Royale chive is getting popular, we were in the trend too. The dish was simple and well executed with tasty greens, crunchy and juicy bean sprouts.

One of the favourite dishes not to be missed in our Cze Char order will be none other than Sweet & Sour Pork. Sweet and tasty, adequately fried with onions, pineapple, tomato and green pepper.

Sweet & Sour Pork

Signature LaLa White Bee Hoon was decent but not to die for. The stock was sweet tasting however the smell of the Bee Hoon gave some discount on the dish and hopefully it can be improved.

The second visit to the atrium at WCEGA had given me a surprise as the stall taking over Kay Lee Roast Stall space is in fact Famous JB Firewokz. From its name, the stall had kind of indicated that they are selling Cze Char dishes from JB (Johor Bahru) and even from the stall front you can get to see a few signature dishes from there.

Famous JB Firewokz

If you are less worry about fatty food, perhaps you can try out their Fermented Red Beancurd Garlic Fried Pork Belly. The meat had gone through a good marinate as they were well fried and these pork bellies tasted consistent.

Garlic Fried Pork Belly - $10 (Small)

Fried Bittergourd in with salted egg? Well, it was the first time ever I had seen on the menu. We order a small version but portion was much more generous than we thought. It was crispy and salted egg taste had complement the bittergourd taste well.

Crispy Salted Egg Bittergourd - $8 (small)

With White Been Hoon in the trend nowadays, it's rather tough to find one tasty version which is deemed suitable to our palettes. We like the rich and tasty broth from White Bee Hoon in Sembawang. Despite not having to order their Seafood White Bee Hoon, we find that their signature Lala White Bee Hoon has its style too.

Signature Lala White Bee Hoon - $12 (Big)

The service crew is bubbly and always bring a smile when serving our ordered item.  Jovial and manage to bring a smile on his customer's face. With so many signature dish on the item, I will like to make another trip down and order other items.

The Beef House 牛肉之家

My last visit to The Beef House was like 8 years ago and I'm pretty glad that after the pandemic period such traditional food is still around. The 2 stalls are still located side by side selling the traditional Hakka delicacies.

Hakka Yong Tau Foo and Hakka Beef Balls Stall

After about half an hour of waiting, I finally get first in the queue however they allow callers to interrupt the queue.

Comparing the stall that I saw the last round, the prints of media was tidier than before.

Finally, we got our order in place! 2 bowls of noodles with a beef ball soup and Yong Tau Foo.

Hakka Beef Balls Soup & YTF
Order for the day

Do not judge the book by its cover. The beef balls in the soup make look plain and plain with stingy amount of broth but this simple looking bowl of soup still remain as tasty as before. The flavour tasted full-bodied and was filled with natural sweetness from beef bone broth.

Beef Ball Soup
Beef Ball Soup - $4

The beef balls are still undeniably chewy and bouncy with beefy flavor in every bite. These are very addictive.

Every piece of YTF tasted fresh and appetizing. As you reach the bottom of the soup with the spoon, you will realize that there are a handful amount of soya beans.

Yong Tau Foo

Here comes the Hakka Noodles! The Hakka Noodle is similar to Mee Pok just that they are narrower in size. The execution of Hakka Noodles usually topped with a handful amount of minced meat.

The special part of the Soon Kueh as compared to the usual ones we had was that the skin was made with yam.

Soon Kueh
Soon Kueh 笋粄 - $1

Soon Kueh was plump and had chewy skin. Ingredients were filled to the brim with turnip, mushrooms, shrimp, black fungus etc.

Food is of traditional taste however the busy pace of this classic coffee shop had led to order confusion for many as they lack structure in order. To order both Yong Tau Foo and Beef Noodles, I have to repeat my order several times to both parties. They also have a unique way of serving of "dropping" a bowl of food from a certain height that creates a sound when serving to customers.

Posted 01 December 2014

Its not easy to find specific dialect cuisine nowadays who serves Hakka Food especially those who served Hakka Dishes like Beef Balls and Yong Tau Foo but one of the coffeeshop in Lavendar had done it all at an affordable pricing.

Gar Lock Eating House

A typical looking stall with faded yellow articles from the media overlapping each other and pasted all over its stall front, this rather "out of place" beef house is really a hidden gem. Even though for its location, the seats were close to a full house when we were there and waiting time was quite some time.

The Beef House

With its bigger portion of beef balls Bee Hoon, the bowl consist of 6 beef balls and a choice of noodles. Soup and bee hoon are on run of the mill but their beef balls are definitely one of the best in Singapore. These balls are made from scratch with minced meat, handmade too thus the meatballs are not very uniform in size. Unlike those packed from the factory, these balls are fresh and free from the beefy smell.

Beef Balls Bee Hoon - $5

The balls are big, firm and bouncy, giving a QQ texture when you sink your teeth into it. Real yummy stuff!

Beef Balls

Besides its legendary Beef Balls stealing most scenes in the coffeeshop, they have other Hakka Dishes like Yong Tau Foo. Items from the Yong Tau Foo bowl is fixed, fresh but nothing special to me.

Hakka Yong Tau Foo - $3

Mee Pok from the Hakka Stall is thinner than the usual ones and they were topped with minced pork meat to pair along. The noodle is slightly dry over here.

Mee Pok

Considering the price, its real value for money, especially its beef balls!

Wildseed Cafe

The Alkaff Mansion is an early 20th-century colonial bungalow located within the Telok Blangah Hill Park in Singapore. The hill was originally called Mt Washington and part was owned by a wealthy Arab Syed Shaikh bin Abdul Rahman Alkaff. He built the bungalow as his primary residence and abandoned it after World War II. This property was later acquired by the government and subsequently went under tendered.

Currently, Wildseed Cafe is housed under The Alkaff Mansion.

If you prefer somehwere in between the outdoor and the indoor dining, this area is not too bad too. Its relaxing and cooling under the ceiling fans.

Laid Back Environment

With a preparation island in the middle of the dining area decked up by the wooden flooring and natural lighting entering through the glass panels on its ceiling makes the place looks modern yet the nostalgic flooring at the foreground gave a little nostalgic touch of the historic mansion.

Accompanying our orders will be these glasses of smoothie and Avocado Shakes. These glasses of beverages were refreshing.

Avocado Shake, Strawberry Yoghurt Smoothie & Mango Yoghurt Smoothie - $9.50, $8, $8

Fried chicken wings were coated with sesame seeds and they smell so good. Dipping these golden brown perfectly fried wings into the Thai Chilli Sesame Mayo will make this order more satisfying.

I think I can have a dozen of them for the dip had make me addicted.

Yummlicious!

We ordered curly fries for sharing. These curly fries were served in a steel basket with faux newspaper. Dipping them into the Truffle Mayo and Parmesan cheese will make us addicted to the fries.

Truffle Mayonnaise Curly Fries - $14

A hearty portion breakfast to have! The spread comprises eggs, Nuremberg pork sausage, bacon Cameron highland cheery tomatoes, portobello mushroom, Australian avocado and toasted sourdough. The choice of eggs to be served can be sunny side up, sous vide or scrambled.

Even the Avocado was abit charred.

Avocado

A pasta that is well executed. Mussel & Calm Vongole was served with linguine. The stock was sweet and you can literally taste them from the natural sweetness of the Mussel and Clams. The use of white wine and bird's eye chilli enhanced the taste. The dish was sprinkled with some Italian Parsley too.

Mussel & Clam Vongole - $23

The pasta was cooked to Al Dente Perfection and every strand of Linguine was well soaked in the broth essence.

Texture of Spaghetti

Thin Crusted Truffle Brie Pizza, is a vegetarian-friendly pizza. It needs about 20 minutes to be served and the pizza was inviting with the aromatic Truffle-infused taste on the pizza with oyster mushroom, and brie as ingredients, topping with some rocket leaves. The texture was great with the smooth cheese that melted inside your mouth as you sunk your teeth into the pizza.

Truffle Brie Pizza - $26

Service was on the ball and the vibe is definitely there. We will be back for more.

Surrey Hills Grocer

Surrey Hills Grocer's location is tucked away in the quiet areas of Jurong and this is intentional in re-creating the experience of driving to a farm gate in Australia. The Grocer does give a relaxing experience for shoppers to slow down, unwind, shop and dine leisurely

Surrey Hills Grocer

Incorporating natural wood elements as part of their furnishing, the grocer is also lit by some soft ambient lighting that makes us feel comfortable while shopping around. Not only that but the grocer is also flanked by large floor-to-ceiling facade windows that allow natural daylight to go through its interior.

The Cafe Vibe

Refreshing cups of Fruit Tea to perk us up on a hot and sunny day while waiting for our food.

Lychee Peach Chamomile Tea & Strawberry Watermelon Rose Oolong - $7 Each

Cod Fish Fillets were thick and grilled, paired with housemade dill tartare and jalapeno while the salad was dressed with farm dressing and some toasted buttery brioche buns.

Cod Fish Burger - $25

The Singapore Chilli Crab Spaghetti is limited. It uses housemade Rempah, fresh crab meat lump, farm mizuna greens and is topped with salmon roe. The spaghetti texture was not too tough and not too soft, I should say. For some who do not take spicy, this dish is a tad on the spicy side.

Singapore Chilli Crab Spaghetti - $29

The sandwich is made up of toasted sourdough with Tasmanian King Island M3/4 Sirloin that is cooked to medium rare. This dish is paired with house mustard mayo, peppers relish, river salt, grocer fresh salad.

Steak Sandwich - $29

The Medium Rare Perfection on the steak was recommended on the menu.

Beef Steak

Using Creamier's cookies and cream ice cream with housemade salted caramel sauce, topped with almond crumble, chantilly cream, fresh fruits and freshly made waffle.

Salted Caramel Waffle - $18

Walking into the grocer, it just never fail to make me purchase Nippy's milk. The variety includes Iced Banana, Coffee, Mocha, Strawberry and Honeycomb.

The Range of Nippy's Flavoured Milk Bought

Having visited the place twice, some courses on their menu sold out and left us with not many choices. While food quality is there, I won't hesitate to visit them again.
