Kok Kee Wonton Noodle

Kok Kee is known for its springy noodle and lard-base chilli sauce.

Kok Kee Wonton Noodle

They have been viral a two years back due to that Jumbo Group proposed an acquisition of $2.1m for this 35 years old establishment during then. Now as a part of the Jumbo Group Restaurants, there are a number of outlets across the Island from Jurong to Bedok.

Wonton Mee - $5.50 (Dry)

Kok Kee was first located at the now defunct Lavender Food Square . Over the years they have been serving food from the heart, the dish also gained loyalty of many Singaporeans of different generations, travelling from island wide just to taste this traditional dish and handmade wontons.

Wonton Mee Close Up

With so many stalls around the island, no doubt that the quality and taste remain the same at the Jurong Point outlet, will it be the same elsewhere?

Don't get fooled by the noodle appearance as they look pretty normal but it really tasted good, especially with the bowl of soup that was brewed with chicken bones.

Ingredients

Today Kok Kee Wonton Noodle is classified as one of the best Wonton Noodles in Singapore. With all things good about Kok Kee Wonton Noodle, I think the only downside I have is its pricing. Taking into consideration of inflation and food hikes, $5.50 for the portion size is still on the high side to pay.

5 The Moments Cafe

This Cafe was actually a bridal photography shop in the late 2000s but in the late year of 2014, the business was converted into a cafe while still retaining the unique character of the 70-year-old shophouse and its vintage history.

5 the Moments Cafe

Stepping into the cafe gave me a shock of my life. The vintage materials and assembly of old school furniture remind me of a rag and bone man place. On the contrary, this concept kind of provide a relaxing and unpretentious feel where one can actually let go of themselves and just catch up with friends or family in the cafe.

Interior

The walls and place were purposely decorated with a run down feel, rustic yet unique on its own. Its hard to find this kind of vibe among Tanjong Pagar Estate.

Interior Decorations

While observing the environment, you will notice that the furniture were not uniform. For this instance, a few random tables are actually made up of a old school sewing machine leg.

While over at one corner, there was this straw hat and magazines in the luggage.

What's in the luggage?

What a collection! How many of these vintage items have you seen before?

Vintage Material

The vintage bicycle was parked outside the cafe with a crate of wooden frames and the cafe menu.

Here's the Mao Shan Wang Ice Cream on Cone. Loves its velvety texture and the strong fragrant of the king of fruit.

Ice Cream Cone (Mao Shan Wang) - $6.50

They offer a variety of Waffle Flavours ranging from Matcha, Charcoal, chocolate, Buttermilk and Red Velvet. We had the Red Velvet Waffle. It was made up of Buttermilk, cocoa, topped with crushed oreo cookies, drizzled with chocolate syrup and a scoop of Pistachio and Blue Pea Sea Salt.

Red Velvet Waffle with Blue Pea Sea Salt + Pistachio - $13.50 + $4.50 + $1.50

The Waffle was crispy and both ice creams complemented the waffle for it was not very sweet. It was soothing and smooth. We were glad that we had ordered the right flavours.

The New Ting!

With so many tenants turning over at the stretch of shophouses along Hillview Rise, I notice that The New Ting has been there for quite sometime and we had yet to try out their food.

Shop Front of The New Ting!

Do not judge the restaurant via its exterior. In fact, the interior has a nice concept using Coca Cola decorations with board games table. The walls were plastered with red bricks wall paper which made the environment cozy and different from the usual places we went.

The New Ting!'s Interior

The vibes are different here and feels quite retro.

While one of us has root beer float and the other has Fruit Tea. The fruit tea was refreshing with real fruits in the big cup.

Fruit Tea and Root Beer Float - $3.50 & $4.90

I was quite thankful to see that the Mushroom Soup is not the run of the mill type and instead it was something made from the scratch topped with a handful of croutons and drizzled with some cream. Texture of soup is there with some mushroom bits / chunks within.

Forest Mushroom Soup - $6.90

The burger looked simple but well executed with fries as side. It was served on a round stone plate with wooden board. The sesame bun was thick and fluffy and generous servings of 24 hours marinated pulled pork were soaked with the BBQ sauce, lettuce and grana padano cheese.

Pulled Pork Burger - $14.90

Quality grilled beef patty accompanied by sunny side up egg, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheddar cheese and bacon with BBQ Sauce.

Mega Burger - $16.90

It was quite empty on a weekday evening and seems like a good place to chill or even a place to do some work. The service was friendly and frankly, I do not mind making a return trip for its quiet environment and over some simple western food like this.

Yat Ka Yan Dessert 一家人

After a hearty meal in Fortune Centre, our stomachs were calling for some desserts. A quick check on Google recommended this shop with a high rating. We were quite lucky that there was not a long queue after our dinner.

Yat Ka Yan Dessert 一家人

Unlike the usual dessert we had at Hawker Centre, Yat Ka Yan Desserts served desserts that were mostly hot and traditional. There is a page for Hot Dessert and also a page for Cold Dessert Available.

Menu

Besides serving desserts, they are also serving Yam Cake, CCF as well as glutinous rice.

Menu

While the main seating area was full, we were directed to their extended shop space for seating. The place was simple yet decorated with a nostalgic feel, with traditional Chinese tiles layout and metal sheets ceiling.

Our Desserts

Cendol was served in a traditional metal bowl and metal spoon. Gula Melaka flavours were strong and fragrant without being too sweet. The pandan coconut jelly was soft and the red beans were nicely cooked.

Cendol 珍多 - $3.20

I had the Hot Cheng Tng and it was above my expectation. It was not too sweet with generous ingredients like longans, sea coconut, pearl barley and white fungus. It was definitely a stomach comforting dessert after a meal.

Cheng Tng 清汤 - $3.20

Another stomach warming dessert to go for will be their Almond Barley Beancurd with Gingko nuts. The almond taste was not too strong and quite soothing for the body.

Almond Barley Beancurd 杏仁腐竹白果 - $3.50

It was a great experience that we stumbled upon this dessert place. It's really a gem and totally worth a comeback.

Izakaya Hikari

In the midst of all the vegetarian restaurants in Fortune Centre, there are 2 small Japanese Eateries that stand out and one of them is immensely popular Izakaya Hikari.

Izakaya Hikari
Izakaya Hikari

While it was always been in my mind that Fortune Centre is mostly occupied with Vegetarian restaurants, the sight and crowd on the day of the visit had totally changed my impression of this building. The place is bustling with a number of eateries and it is no longer the place that I knew.

Upon grabbing hold of its menu, I was kind of amazed by the variety of Japanese food that Izakaya Hikari offered. We turned into gluttons instantly after being starved over the dinner timing and ordered more items.

While waiting quite some time for the table, we were already quite hungry. The first dish that came onto our table was Salmon Mentaiko Donburi and this great tasting dish had somehow eased some part of our hungry stomachs.

Salmon Mentaiko Donburi たらこ
Salmon Mentaiko Donburi たらこ - $16.90

Grilled Unagi Donburi was almost as good as those speciality restaurants.

Grilled Unagi with Rice ウナギ
Grilled Unagi with Rice ウナギ - $18.90

When it comes to Sashimi, Salmon and Swordfish Otoro are the hardest to resist on our table. Each type of Sashimi comes in 3 pieces and was tucked with wasabi, ginger slices as well as shredded turnips.

Salmon & Mekajiki Belly
Salmon - $8 & Mekajiki Belly - $9

The breaded exterior of the Potato Croquette gave a good soft crisp texture. Pairing them with the Tonkatsu sauce makes this side great tasting.

Potato Croquette ポテトコロッケ
Potato Croquette ポテトコロッケ - $5.90

The grilled crab meat tasted a bit charred, however, it was a tasty and special combination in Kani Miso topped with some spring onions and fish roes.

Kani Miso Crab カニみそ,蟹味噌
Kani Miso Crab カニみそ,蟹味噌 - $15.90

The crustacean taste was strong and the flavour was on the saltier side. Nonetheless, I still find it quite a unique dish on the grilled menu.

If you enjoy a variety of Yakimono, it will be a better choice to order the set for they have 7 items on the menu, namely:
  1. Shishito - シシトウ Green Chilli Pepper
  2. Shitake - シイタケ Whole Black Mushroom
  3. Tori Momo - 鳥モモ Chicken Thigh
  4. Tebasaki - てばさき Chicken Wing
  5. Bacon Asparagus - バーコンアスパラガス Asparagus Wrapped with Bacon
  6. Nankotsu - ナンコツ Chicken Cartillage
  7. Tsukune - つくね Chicken Meaballs
Yakimono Set
Yakimono Set 焼き物セット - $22.90 each

As the Yakimono set did not include the Wagyu Beef, we had it on a separate order. It was packed with smokey flavours and every part of the meat was succulent. It seems like one stick is never enough!

Wagyu Beef Skewer ぎゅくし
Wagyu Beef Skewer ぎゅくし - $8.90

The taste of Mentaiko seafood freshness is there. However, it's a bit on the salty side but eating it with a slice of Japanese cucumber will balance out the taste.

Mentaiko 明太子
Mentaiko 明太子 - $9.90

Japanese Whole Squid was grilled nicely and not overdone. It was nice and tender.

Surume Ika スルメイカ
Surume Ika スルメイカ - $15.90

Overall service was good and the food was reasonably priced. I do not mind coming back again.

Bei-ing Wanton Noodles

After visiting The Original Katong Laksa - Janggut Laksa, I realised that people are also talking about the Wanton Noodles stall that share the same row as the laksa stall in the basement. Bei-Ing for instance has been highly raved online for its Wanton Mee.

Stall of Wanton Noodles

We placed our order after queuing for some time and we had to wait for another round for our number to be called, altogether it took about an hour. The uncle who was sitting down had a very strong vocal. For every number he shouted, it kind of feared us.

Wanton Mee - $7

The noodle was mixed in black sauce, dark soya sauce and some pepper and reminds me of an old school taste. The soup on the other hand was tasty with leeks in it.

Our Plate of Wanton Mee

The Char Siew was something outstanding as compared to other Wanton mee. The thick-cut slices were juicy and finished with a nice caramelization.

Char Siew Slices

The slices of tasty Char Siew were consistent in taste and strikes a good balance of lean meat as well as fatty meat.

Char Siew

The fried wantons were pretty addictive. It was crispy and showered with chopped laksa leaves, that gives a good fragrance to these thin wantons.

Fried Wantons

Though deep-fried, the Fried Wontons were not oily.

Individual Fried Wanton

The coffee shop has another overflow shop space where more seatings are available to cater for the crowds of Laksa and Wanton Mee Patrons. Do you enjoy black sauce Wanton Noodles too?

East Coast Ngoh Hiang

Its a usual practice that patrons of Blanco Court Prawn Mee will order some Ngoh Hiang from East Coast Ngoh Hiang while waiting for their main dish to be served. This practice is seen at most of the Prawn Mee Shops where Ngoh Hiang Stall is just readily available beside them.

Stall of East Coast Ngoh Hiang

Buzzer was given after our order. Though waiting is needed, the speed of serving Ngoh Hiang is still definitely faster than the Prawn Noodles.

Buzzer
Buzzer

My selection includes Tau Kwa, Chinese Sausage, Egg, Ngoh Hiang and Prawn Crackers. These items were fried, chopped and served piping hot.

My Selection $9.70

Though deep-fried, items were not oily and instead they tasted crispy and addictive. Both sauces, the sweet sauce, and chilli complemented the items well.

Egg

Its definitely a great choice of snack at any point in time in the day and a good side dish to pair while we are enjoying our bowls of the famous Prawn Noodle.
