Shun Ji Cooked Food

We decided to have our meal fix on Wanton Mee in Telok Blangah and had decided to try Shun Ji Cooked Food as I could not find the popular stall that I had patronised many years back. Shun Ji cooked food serves a number of noodle dishes and has a significant queue during peak hours.

The plate of noodles looks rather ordinary with slices of Char Siew and vegetables decked up by a bed of noodles. Just like any other Wanton Mee, the wantons were placed into a bowl of soup.

Unlike the usual Char Siew that looks glistering with a layer of oil-coated, Shun Ji's has their Char Siew more on the lean and dry side but do not mistake me as I like this style of Char Siew too.

The soup was pretty tasty and Wantons were smooth with a consistent taste of minced meat encased. Overall, I find that the plate of noodles was good but not to die for.

Mr & Mrs Mohgan Crispy Prata

Mr & Mrs Mohgan Prata has been on my breakfast list for quite some time and before I even had the chance to visit the place, the veteran hawker died at home after being triggered by a heart attack. Many of the longtime customers of this popular Joo Chiat Stall were devastated to learn about the passing of Mr Mohgan.

The stall has been for 15 years and this couple's prata was exceptionally famous in Joo Chiat as they dole out crispy Prata, attracting long queues. To assist the patrons, they have a list of Prata Items available with price listed on this clipboard just in front of their stall.

Though the queues are long, the hawkers are friendly. We patiently waited for about 30 - 40 minutes before our order was served.

The piquant curry was thick but not overly spicy or cloying. It goes well with the crispy Prata.

It has been a long time since I had coin Prata and during my second trip back here, I manage to order a plate of it and shared it with the breakfast Kakis. The mini prata come in a plate of 6.

The texture of the Prata remains the same as the Kosong Prata. These cute little coin-shaped Prata are crispy and fragrant.

One of my favourite order, is "Telur Bawang" aka Egg Onion.

One of us is a fan of mushrooms and could not resist ordering their Cheese Mushroom Prata. Though crispy on the exterior, the combination of slices of mushroom used together with the normal cheese was definitely not my style. I would prefer mozzarella cheese over to the type of Cheese they use as the former has the cheese pulling effect.

No doubt that Mr & Mrs Mohgan Prata is popular and known for its crispiness, but I find that there are still better Prata around. Nonetheless, the service rendered is friendly and I do not mind making a return trip to Joo Chiat if my friends are keen on it.

West Lake 西湖小吃

This kiosk has been a hidden gem in Jurong Point Shopping Malls over the years. I started patronizing West Lake when my classmate introduced their famous Braised Pork Bun. This Signature Dish is a traditional delicacy that cannot be missed whether when you are dining in or taking it away.

Stopping over at the kiosk for some snacks and decided to order their Chee Cheong Fun with Special Sauce. Chee Cheong Fun aka rice vermicelli rolls was smooth and drenched with a special unique sauce that is different from the usual ones I had.

The Kong Bak Pau is to be died for. The soft pillowy bun cradling the slab of well-flavoured pork belly. Overall taste was not overwhelming and was succulent and if you do not mind that fatty meat, I would say it's the best I had so far from a kiosk.

Although it may be kind of expensive I find that the quality and taste are worth my money and to splurge on this.

Ba-Jie Kao Kha Moo [Closed]

The news of the revamped food court in Jurong Point had reached me over in the social media and it was said that there are a lot of changes in the food stalls. Upon seeing the Ba Jie picture, I had my mind fixed on the famous Bangkok Pork Leg Rice.

Kao Kha Moo aka Thai Pork Leg Rice is a popular Thai Street dish loved by both locals and tourists. Its a simple and hearty meal made up of well-braised pork leg, preserved vegetables, braised egg as well as som vegetables.

Thai Pork Leg was definitely well braised to the point where I exerted the slightest force and the meat was easily disintegrated. Although it was a Thai Cuisine, I find that the taste was pretty standard just like the normal Pork Leg we had with braised sauce drenching over the plate of white rice.

Nevertheless, it is still a good experience tasting it. I will be back for other interesting stalls in the renovated Kopitiam, hopefully soon.

Say Seng Famous Tau Kwa Pau

Have been hearing about Famous Tau Kwa Pau but did not have the chance to try it. While I was there, I realised that they were selling braised ducks too. Say Seng has been around since 1959 and was previously located at Joo Chiat and East Coast Road.

There is a minimum order of 2 and despite having my stomach filled with breakfast, I still ended up buying 2 as I did not want to miss the opportunity to try them. The fillings were generous and stuffed to the brim. The deep-fried Tau Kwa smell was aromatic and the fillings included chopped fishcakes, braised eggs, fried yam and cucumber. The cucumber gave an excellent refreshing taste to the palettes, and the fried bits were a bit salty.

While I was expecting some savourly sweet sauce over my Tau Kwa Pau, I realised that the sauce used is the same braised sauce for the braised duck. I poured the sauce and some chilli over the ingredients, enhancing the taste.

The sibling is having cravings for Fish & Chips and she wanted to try this place out after some searches online.

Besides Alcohol, there is not much selection of Soft Drinks, thus we ended up having Dry Ginger Ale.

Freshly Deep fried, these Oysters were encased by a thin layer of flaky batter. This is a very good plate for sharing and together with the given dip as well as the lemon juice, it's perfect.

The fresh English Pork Sausages were decked up by a bed of mashed potatoes paired with beef & ale gravy by the side.

The pork sausages were made up of finely minced meat, unlike processed food.

As we order the Beef Stew, it was kind of disappointing in the sauce as there was no variety in the dishes. Similar to the Bangers & Mash, the dish was prepared with mashed potatoes. These tender grass-fed beef chunks were also paired with root vegetables and herbs too.

One of the staples not to be missed is none other than their Fish and Chips.  We had the large portion of beer-battered Atlantic haddock fish weighing 300g. The flaky crust of the battered fish was delighting. The Fish & Chips was paired with mushy green peas, lemon wedge and gherkin tartar sauce.

The Fish & Chips also coupled with thick-cut fries. We enjoyed the dish with some malt vinegar drizzling over it, harmonizing the dish.

The seatings are a bit limited which may be a disadvantage. Other than that, I will say the fish and chips are better than average but not to die for.
