Fong Sheng Hao 豐盛號

Fong Sheng Hao is a Taiwanese Cafe known for its Charcoal Grilled Toasts in Shilin Night Market. There are already 2 outlets in Singapore and Westgate is their 3rd.

The menu was quite limited and perhaps it also explained why there was no dinner crowd for quite a number of items were sold out, leaving mostly sandwiches.

Our beverages come with disposable cups. The signature Milk Tea does have a fragrance but the strongness of Milk Tea taste was absent. While most of the diners here go for their Signature Milk Tea and Cane Flavour Black Tea, I guessed these orders won't go wrong. It was said that they use 12 hours of boiled syrup for the cane flavoured black tea.

The chair has a rustic feel that brings us back to the times to the 60s / 70s.

Popcorn chickens were fragrant and while we expect the outer layer to be crispy and hard, it turned out to be another way round, soft and tender. The texture is addictive and to be honest, I could not stop popping them into my mouth continuously.

The icon Taiwanese Dish, Braised Pork Rice aka Lu Rou Fan was above average taste. I love the intensity of how the braised permeates into the pork loin as well as the strips of pork belly.

The taste and smell of spice used are present, indicating that it had been braised in dark soy sauce for some hours. Besides the pork, the bowl comprises pearl white rice as well as a braised hard-boiled egg with slices of cucumber. Braised items were savoury and went well with the bowl of plain white rice.

The Frosting Toast Sticks come together with Fong Sheng Hao Braised Pork Rice Set. It is a grainy crisp light snack that reminds me of some baby teething breadstick. It has a pleasant sweet buttery smoky flavour.

The bread is toasted upon ordering. It was then sandwiched by marinated pork cutlet that is grilled perfectly, retaining its juiciness and chewy texture. The fluffy egg and the gooey cheese added some salty flavour to the sandwich and makes the toast yummy.

I seldom get to order Toasts on my trips to Taiwan and having them over dinner was kind of inappropriate for me. Nevertheless, the vibes of Taiwan is quite familiar once we stepped into Fong Sheng Hao as we observed the Taiwanese ways of greetings and the lingo they use in the Menu.

I guess we have to make do with all these since we are restricted to travel nowadays.

Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway 吃爽麵粉粿

With the ex-MasterChef Finalist Arrong Wong, Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway has been multiplying over the island in a short span of time and they should need no introduction by now. With the renovated Get together coffeeshop in Bukit Batok incorporated with a variety of popular stalls, there is no doubt that most of us will be spending time waiting in line for what we Singaporeans do best.

Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway

I flocked over to get in the queue in front of the stall and ordered their recommended Signature All-In Combo Mee Hoon Kway. Their Signature with All-In basically comprises all the ingredients of other items on the menu. It comprises of Minced Pork, Pork Slices, Pork Ball as well as Shrimp Ball, served in either dry or soup version.

I opt for the soup version and it came with fried ikan billis to complement the taste. The Mee Hoon Kueh slices were velvetly smooth and not too doughy with some charred taste.

The thickness of the dough was great and these carbs went well with the bowl of flavourful soup.

The pork slices were tender and went well with the chilli.  Though the meatball was well marinated and contains a distinctive flavour, dipping them into the garlicky and piquant chilli definitely enhances its taste.

Though it is said to be of quality made and each component in the bowl was done well, making up a comforting bowl of Mee Hoon Kway, my heart on Mee Hoon Kway still goes to L32 Handmade Noodles for their broth and chilli are packed with my childhood memories, closer to my taste buds.

Teochew Meat Puff 潮州香饼

This Teochew Meat Puff stall in Woodlands industrial had gone viral sometimes back. I still remember the times when it gained so much attention in the neighbourhood Pasar Malam. Due to the pandemic, many business have to make changes. Let alone Teochew Meat Puff, they have opened an outlet among the Woodlands industrial estate. Well, at least it's better for consumers as we can go to the fixed location instead of running around the island for Pasar Malam.

Teochew Meat Puff

There are 6 kinds of Meat Puff, oyster, vegetable, octopus, scallop, prawn and crab. Besides the meat puff, you will also find other items like Sotong Ball, fried mushroom and sweet potato available. No worries of standing in the queue as they have the buzzer system implemented, therefore one can enjoy their drinks in the coffeeshop while waiting for their meat puff.

Meat Puff Fried to Order

The team has surrounded the deep fryer and every order was deep-fried on the spot.

Deep Frying in Progress

Without thinking much, I ordered 6 of the Meat Puff (3 different types and 2 each) and they were fried to order on the spot. Boy! The meat puff was heavy in weight.

3 Kinds of Meat Puff

The puff was generously filled with minced pork and stuffed with Chinese celery with some roasted peanuts sticking onto the external surface of the batter. The octopus was not very significant among the minced meat and I can hardly spot them.

Octopus Pork 章鱼猪 - $3.50

The Prawn Pork on the other hand do at least have some seafood flavours with the pork.

Prawn Pork 虾猪肉 - $3.50

This is the traditional Oyster Pork fillings. The meat puff includes 2 plump oysters.

Oyster Pork 蚝猪肉 - $3.50

Overall I find that the meat puff has some lacking flavours and perhaps if the meat can be more seasoned for some extra oomph. The outer layer was crispy and perfectly fried to its golden brown however, the layer of batter was slightly thicker than expectations, they also lacked the fragrant that other Fuzhou Oyster Pancakes catered.

Traditional Famous Prawn Mee

I have been craving Lor Mee recently and have chanced by the coffee shop again. Luckily the queue was not long this time and I manage to get my orders quickly without having to Taobao.

Fried Fish Lor Mee - $4

With the noodles hidden by the braised gravy, decked with pieces of pork as well as the delicious fried fish, I could not resist but fastened my footsteps to the seat as soon as I got hold of my orders.

I like that the Lor Mee gravy was slightly thick but not too starchy. The bowl also comprises of half a portion of braised egg and coriander as garnishing. If you prefer your bowl of Lor Mee with Garlicky flavours, additional chopped garlic can be added.

Delicious Bowl of Lor Mee

Fried Fish was fried to golden perfection this time and they look so irresistible.

Yummy Fried Fish

They are soft and easy to manage.

Fried Fish

Braised sliced lean pork was soft and flavourful. With all ingredients and flavours in place, my lunch was stomach filling and satisfying.

The queue at this corner stall draws most of our attention during lunch time. Traditional Famous Prawn Mee is a branch from its main stall at Hougang.

Stall of Traditional Famous Prawn Mee

Ordering the dry version of the prawn mee, there was nothing much to rave about, the bowl of noodle taste pretty standard to me. However, the soup was quite tasty and I have a slight liking for it.

Prawn Mee 虾面 - $4

Many raved about their Fried Fish Lor Mee and I must agree that the bowl of Lor Mee has passed the average standard. The bowl of Lor Mee has the standard braised pork and gravy was not too thick or sticky.

Fried Fish Lor Mee 炸鱼卤面 - $4

Even though the fried fish may be a shade darker in colour but its batter is aromatic. Not to worry about having the fish turning soggy when you Tabao as you can always request them to pack separately.

Fried Fish

Despite having Prawn Mee as its signature dish on the signboard, personally, I would prefer their Lor Mee.

Du Du Cooked Food

Tu Tu Kueh is a heritage snack that is loved by many for its bite-size pillow-soft consistency filled with Coconut or Peanuts. These steamed rice cakes are also known as Putu Piring.

Stall of Du Du Cooked Food

Besides the standard bite-size of the Tu Tu Kueh, this stall does offer a bigger size (XL Size) that is almost 3 times the size of the original and costs $1 per piece.

Tu Tu Kueh - 4 for $2

Uncle Tan who is selling Tu Tu Kueh for more than 50 years is the man behind the Stall. I used to visit his Tu Tu Kueh Stall in Jurong West during my childhood days. His Tu Tu Kueh was popular in the neighbourhood.

Tu Tu With Peanut Fillings

Ingredients were prepared from scratch like cutting of pandan leaves, and grounding of rice flour. If you notice, they have a big machine in the stall meant for his preparations - that's how serious they are into these handmade delicacies.

Pasir Panjang Malay Food

Pasir Panjang Malay Food is the only Muslim stall that is housed under this run down coffeeshop. However, whenever it is dued for lunchtime, you can see that the queues start forming up in front of the stall for their delicious plates and packets of Nasi Pandang as well as other staple dishes.

Stall of Pasir Panjang Malay Food

The staple dishes that can't be missed out from the Nasi Padang stall will always be their Tempeh & Fried Tofu. There is a good selection of dishes available and I could not resist ordering my childhood favourite, fishcake in sambal chilli.

Nasi Padang

The Sambal chili Cuttlefish was our favourite too and we also have some braised vegetables as well as salted egg to go along with the rice.

Nasi Padang

The cuttlefish was generously given on our plate with large cuts and if we were to compare the price paid. I would say that money is worth spending here.

Sambal Cuttlefish

For many places, we know that enjoying a plate of Nasi Padang is never cheap. Therefore, having such a meal will only be once in a blue moon.

Big Fish Small Fish

If you have been to the Far-Flung Punggol East of Singapore, you will know that Big Fish Small Fish started from the Punggol Container Park serving Fish & Chips meals in the container settings. They have then expanded into the malls around Singapore retaining its Container Theme.

Container Industrial Theme

The settings were a replica of the Industrial Environment with containers, wood crates and expose pipping, even Graffiti on the wall.

We are opting for the value lunch sets that come with the Fish and Crisps with soft drink and 1 item of our choice (Soup / Coleslaw / Cinnamon Churros). They are different types of Fish that BFSF offers, namely Snow Cod, Halibut, Haddock, Sea Bass, Hoki and Dory.

Menu

Lunch Set Menu

BFSF (Big Fish Small Fish) aims to provide affordable Fish & Chips with a variety of fish and sauces catering to every taste bud in an enjoyable and casual environment.

Types of Fish

The Lunch Set was value for money and comes with a soft drink and an item of our choice. We had 2 set meals and had chosen the soup as well as the coleslaw.

Lemon & Lime Twist, Orange Minute Maid with Soup of the Day

The soup was appetising and comes with chunks of ingredients.

Soup with the Meal

On the other hand, coleslaw was decent, not too milky and mixed in with some raises. The style was not to my liking and I will prefer the soup instead.

Coleslaw

We had the Signature Halibut where the fish was battered and served with freshly sliced potato crips or premium skin-on fries. Their batter is light and even though it was deep-fried with a crispy exterior, the fish remains juicy and moist internally. The Halibut meat was sweet and I love the natural density of the meat.

Signature Halibut - $17.80

In another set lunch, we chose the Hoki fish which is naturally sweet and moist in flavour. The meat was lean and firm but made up of delicate flakes. Instead of the potatoes crisp, we have skipped them and topped up the meal with the Turkey Bacon Mac & Cheese.

Signature Hoki - $13.90

If you are a Mac & Cheese Lover, these Turkey Bacon Mac & Cheese should not be missed! They are yummy! You can change the crisps from the set to this, Pilaf Rice, mashed potatoes with brown sauce or even Skin-On Fries.

Turkey Bacon Mac & Cheese - Topped up at $1.50 with Value Meal

The variety of sauces that they offered left an impression and thus make my return. They have creative sauces like Cheese, Curry and even salted Egg sauce that enhance our fish & chips dining experience. Beware, these are very addictive.
