Restaurant Tiong An (Tiong An Coffee House)

While exploring the eateries in Taman Perling area, we discovered Restoran Tiong An as one of our breakfast places in Johor Bahru. Every visit was present with their friendly servers and quick service.

Restaurant Tiong An (Tiong An Coffee House)

With a brown colour theme and cement screed flooring, Tiong An had given diners like us a nostalgic feel of an old-school coffee house.

Interior

Should you look around in the Coffee House, you will notice some old-school items like this that is eye-catching to our eyes.

Radio

If you are keen on some sweets or even biscuits, do help yourselves from the jars. Tiong An offers them free of charge for their customers.

Self Service Area

During a period, they were serving free Cheng Tng and Barley Water to their customers.

One of us was missing this traditional gem biscuits and took this for sharing.

Self Service

By looking into Tiong An Cafe's Menu, be sure that you will be spoilt of choices.

Tiong An Cafe

While such beverages in Singapore seem rare and uncommon, it's the reverse in Malaysia. Perk up your morning with a traditional cup of butter coffee like this!

Butter Coffee 古香奶油咖啡 - RM 4

While some of us is having coffee, some of us have tea too.

Tea

Kind of regretted ordering this drink as it was not the kind of Cendol we had in Singapore. There were 3 layers with the top portion being the Cendol Coconut Jelly, the middle with milk and the bottom with Gula Melaka. It tasted weird to me, especially on the milk portion.

Cendol 煎惹三色奶 - RM 8.50

How about having instant noodles in a claypot with egg added? You can try their version of Maggi Mee Goreng, either in spicy or non-spicy form.

Maggi Mee Goreng (Dry) 招牌祖传快熟面 - RM 7.50

The toast was crispy and savoury with its cheese, ham and Mayo.

Cheese Ham Mayo Whole Bread 芝士火腿美乃滋全麦面包 - RM 8.30

Cheesy and yummy toast with some hints of pepper. Order this!

Potato Chicken Toast 马铃薯鸡肉三明治 - RM 8.80

Nasi Lemak without a lot of ingredients. Simple! The rice is fragrant though and went well with the chilli.

Nasi Lemak with Egg 鸡蛋椰浆饭 - RM 6.90

Not a bad choice if you are looking for Fried Kueh Tiow in the morning. It's tasty even though there was not much ingredients.

Kueh Tiow Goreng 炒果条 - RM 9.20

One of the team's favourite dishes to order as the dish carries a light and savoury fragrant without being too spicy. The mixed vegetables and rice cake goes well with the delectable gravy.

Lontong Sayur 印尼什锦菜- RM 9.80

A combination of Bee Hoon in Chicken Soup and I requested them to be served without chilli. The serving was rather plain with cabbages, boiled egg and chicken as ingredients, topped with roasted peanuts. Thai Lime was also given in the soup.

Soto Ayam 印尼鸡汤 - RM 9.80

For so many trips here to Tiong An, we have been focusing on the similar bread and dishes till I decided to try out their Nasi Goreng even though its quite unusual that I will like to have such dish for breakfast. Well, let's do it. The Nasi Goreng is fragrant and fried in mixed vegetables, topped with sunny side up egg.

Nasi Goreng Tiong An 招牌炒饭 - RM 10.80

The scrambled eggs were sandwiched in between the triangular toast. Those eggs were creamy and moist. Yummy!

Egg Sandwich whole wheat bread 鸡蛋三明治全麦面包 - RM 5.30

Our friend caught us by surprise for craving this for his breakfast. The drumsticks were dry but the meat was close to the taste of KFC. This is also their recommended Special Snack on the menu.

Crispy Fried Chicken Set 香脆炸鸡套餐 - RM 12.90

It's an opened tuna sandwich, Tuna was spread on lettuce evenly on top of the bread with a mixture of spring onions.

Tuna Sandwich 吞拿鱼三明治 - RM 6.80

There are many dishes we have not tried. I guess there will be many chances, we will be back there again.

TenPlus.sg

While the blue hours make such a beautiful scape in from Ten Plus, we settled down ourselves ordering some food and preparing to listen to the live band/

Ten Plus Live Band

Ten+ incorporates the beauty of the wilderness into its safari-themed bistro to provide a unique camp-like dining experience — a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

With a menu that encompasses the best of both Western and Eastern cuisines, Ten+ also offers a variety of booze such as beers on tap for diners to unwind and enjoy.

Time to grab some beer with starters and bites! We had lager, accentuated by the lightness of lychee puree and Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc.

Lychee Lager (4.3%) & Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc 330ml Bottled - $15 & $10

We also have some lime juice.

Lime Juice - $4.90

The fried chicken was addictive with garlic soya sauce topped with roasted sesame.

Crispy Chicken Bites with Soy Garlic Glaze - $13

The 200g serving of Diced Beef was mixed with spring onion and coated with some yummy sweet Japanese sauce. Mouth-watering!

Beef Cubes - $16

The size of The Skewer was not very convincing for 4 sticks. These Skewers were made up of pork shoulder glazed in yakitori sauce and topped with furikake and Bonito flakes.  Love its taste and tenderness but its priced at the steeper side.

Thai Grilled Chicken Skewer "Moo Ping" (4 Sticks) - $14

A fusion bowl of Japanese and our local dish. The Aburi Mentai Salmon Donburi looked appetizing. Salmon was smeared with Torched Mentaiko Mayo with yellow daikon, sous vide egg, and Azhar decked up by Furikake Rice.

Aburi Mentai Salmon Donburi - $22

If you are looking for a Burger meal, choose between the Charred Chicken or Flame Grilled Angus Burger. The burger comes with brioche buns, sandwiched with Angus Beef, maple bacon, BBQ Sauce and smoked cheddar. The dish is completed with two sides, Curly fries and salad.

Flame Grilled Angus Burger - $23

The Linguine was tossed in cream sauce and tick-cut bacon and generous bonito flakes. the Sous Vide Egg and Tobiko make this dish savoury.
Carbonara - $18

Given that the price of the food is comparable to other cafes and its remote location, there is nothing to attract us in heading back here as it's quite inconvenient. I do not see that we will be revisiting this place very soon.

Old Habits

A visit back to Old Habits for their atmosphere and food while introducing my friend to the nostalgic environment.

We ordered chicken breast fillet as the main and a glass of rootbeer float. The Chicken Fillet was cut into even slices, decked up by a bed of mashed potatoes and drizzled in some sweet-tasting sauce. Completing this main with the garden greens with zesty dressing and vinaigrette.

Chicken Breast Fillet - $15.50

Pairing my main, Seasalt Caramel Roast Chicken with Mashed Potato & Coleslaw. The Roast Chicken was simply toothsome dressed in its glistering skin and tender meat. The coleslaw lifts the dish to a refreshing level. Balancing the protein meal, I had mashed potatoes as crabs. Love it.

Half Seasalted Caramel Roast Chicken - $18.50

Old Habits was established in the year 2014 and are part of a Vintage shop and fusion cafe that brings good vibes. Priding themselves in providing quality and affordable food fare, they also do create a unique theme in their cafe too. One can really enjoy dining in an environment surrounded by some of the items we had seen in the past.

Old Habits

Stepping into the Old Habits is as if sitting the time capsule back to the past as it filled us with a lot of old memories. Comparing the floor area of the existing place in Safra to their old unit, this is much better and spacious as it provides more room for more nostalgic displays.

The Old Habits

As you enter the cafe, you will be greeted by this Astro boy.

Passenger Loading Only

The highlights of the cafe are mainly the toys on display. The wide array of nostalgic toys was a great reminiscent of our childhood. Here you get to see some metal tin-based robots, classic Ultraman, power rangers etc.

Array of Toys

While the place may look like a junkyard for some in its industrial-looking theme and placement of items all over the entire place. You will get to see a portion of Coca-Cola and some soft drinks collections on top of the scaffoldings.

Scaffolds

Over at one corner, you get to see some M & M and other figurines with a view of Safra's Swimming Pool.

Swimming Pool View

Over at the industrial shelving, there is  a good range of Pedz Candy collections on Micky, Minnie, Donald and Daisy.

Does this Qoo Figurines look familiar to you?

How about this range of Elephants figurines?

The mushroom soup was served with a dash of truffle oil. The bowl of creamy and delicious soup was made up of both white button and shitake mushrooms. The chalky texture of the soup was made up of some mushroom bits too.

To complete my meal, I had the Old Habits Float out of curiosity. It was a surprise drink in a combination of Kickapoo Joy Soft drink, and Angostura Bitters with a scoop of Rum & Raisin Ice Cream afloat.

Old Habit Float & Mushroom Soups - $7.90, $6.50

Food is value for money! The portion was big and the spaghetti was tossed in tender beef chucks stew with tomato base sauce.

Chunky Beef Bolognese (Spaghetti) -$9.90

While I expected smoked duck to be on the saltier side, these pieces of pan-seared duck were drizzled with homemade honey mustard and served with coleslaw and garden greens.

Smoked Duck Bigarade -$19.50

The glistering pieces of Smoked Duck were addictive.

Yummy Smoked Duck

It's also called a Pouffle as the texture is in between a bread pudding and a souffle. The Pouffle requires preparation for about 20 minutes. The coconut kueh with shredded coconut was partially caramelized and aromatic, topped with vanilla bean ice cream.

Old Habits Coconut Kueh (Pouffle)- $9.90

Here's another section of the restaurant where one gets to enjoy a setup of Mama Shop aka Convenient stall with the coin-operated phone as well as coin-operated kiddie ride.

Mama Shop

In the absence of Spotify, YouTube and KKBox for music, we have these tapes and records in the past.

Cassette Tapes

Here's the vintage-looking Gramaphone for the records.

Retro Turntable

To my surprise, they have a handful of records in collection too.

Records

This manual Sewing Machine is passe and with the technology advancement, such machines are replaced by the computerized sewing machines nowadays. Nonetheless, this reminds me of those days whereby my mum operated this to alter our school uniforms.

The Singer Sewing Machine

This is definitely stunning to me. They have a section on the olden day's medical hall's cabinet where the staff used to grab different kinds of herbs from the drawers.

Medical Hall

Do you have some recollections of such canned condensed milk?

Hanging from the Scaffolds

As we walked out of the cafe, reality hits us once again and we are back in 2022. If you ask if I will visit again? I will say yes mainly for their service, environment and food.

BlackGoat

As we looked around in Jalan Batu Market & Food Center for dinner, the plates of Western food on the diner's table caught my attention. I spotted Blackgoat as it was packed with long snaky queues compared to other stalls.

Blackgoat

Every burger set comes with fries. We ordered the Fried Chicken Burger with Chipotle Sauce. The buns were fragrant with buttery hints and soft, sandwiching the slab of crispy fried chicken with creamy chipotle sauce and some shredded cabbages.

Fried Chicken Burger - $14

The New Zealand Grassfed Sirloin looked interesting. It was topped with fried garlic and nori and served with Korean BBQ sauce. The beef was succulent and decent.

New Zealand Grassfed Sirloin (190g), Korean BBQ, Fried Garlic, Nori - $15.50

All in all, it was a good experience new kind of food being introduced into the hawker centre and also supporting the young hawkers.
