Dim Sum Icon

We all heard about how Gudetama has incorporated into Dim Sum dishes at Dim Sum Icon and decided to give it a try especially on the part where the Golden Custard fillings oozing out of Gudetama's butt.

Unfortunately, the theme for Gudetama was over during our visit and it was changed into little twin stars. Having heard of the little twin stars and following the hype, we were luckily to get a high table that accommodates 6 pax.

We have heard queues up to an hour and there was no surprise when we saw the notice. What matter most was that we were lucky to have seat. However do note that you may have to wait up to an hour under peak hours.

Even though theme Gudetama has been over, we still can find trace of it in the restaurant like this cute little display board right at the shop front.

Crowd gradually comes in after us and soon the place was fully packed. With theme Twin Stars served with their Dim Sum, Dim Sum Icon has become an "instagram-worthy" place to visit. Almost every table I observed had their dish snapped by the camera before consumption.

Even Chinese tea over in Dim Sum Icon was served in the cute little Twin Stars tea cup, not mentioning the Tea Pot too!

The speed of serving from the kitchen was quite efficient and soon, our table was all swarmed by the plates we ordered, leaving minimum space for photography.

A "Soon Kueh" version of steamed shrimp vegetables dumplings. Skins were as sticky as soon kueh with bouncy chewy prawns and vegetables as fillings.

Steamed chicken feet with black bean and garlic sauce was sweet and came with an attention catching presentation with slice red and green chilli on top. It will be better if these chicken feet were eaten when warm and since we took some time for photography, texture did not taste ideal.

Mushroom, chicken, prawns and fish maw were wrapped by the bean curd skin. This combination was interesting and have a unique taste on its on.

Cheese tarts comes in a pair featuring the Little Twin Stars. Taste was sweet and cloying, not to our liking.

Topping up the Siew Mai with scallops and Little Twin Stars picture did enhance the appearance and I could not bear to eat them up. Scallop was fresh with minced pork fillings. A good thing about having Dim Sum in Hong Kong is that the smell of pork was not as strong from Siew Mai.

Steamed beef balls was rather unique and was bouncy. Taste was quite pleasant with appearance similar to a big minced meat ball.

The Glutinous Rice reminds me of our Singapore's version of Malay Fried Rice "Nasi Pattaya". Dish was nicely done with glutinous rice wrapped with a layer of egg and placed onto a bed of shredded lettuce. With carbo loaded from the glutinous rice, our stomach got filled up rather quickly.

Crispy deep fried bean-curd roll with shrimp was delicious and was not too oily if you dont mind without Little Twin Stars on it, you may order these.

Pour some soy sauce over and enjoy the silky smooth rice roll with beef in it.

We were all spoilt by the oozing effects of creamy custard bun in Singapore. To disappoint, though these little buns were cute, they did not bring any bursting effects and so you do not need to worry about the sudden attack of hot custard fillings! Fillings were too watery and had strong vanilla taste which we find too sweet.

I seldom get to see double rolls from the dim sum place and interestingly, it was not bad. We got an overdose of shrimps here as most of the Dim Sum has this as ingredient. Apparently, they have shrimps in its core fillings wrapped by fried fritters ("You Tiao") and rice roll, giving a layer of smooth exterior and crispy 2nd layer then a soft 3rd layer. If you love having textural bites, try this.

Dish not commonly found in Singapore. Apparently before I could take a picture, 2 of the dace cakes were eaten by my famished friends. This cakes were not too oily and texture was springy, similar to the usual beef balls we had.

Dish was more of Bean Curd Sheet or more commonly known as "Tau Ki" in Singapore taste. The steam soup was simple and tasted normal.

I believe the beautiful baby pink and blue gives a very lively touch to the usual "Har Kau" (Prawn Dumplings with the Little Twin Star flag attached to the star shape carrot.

Fried Shrimp Cakes were paired with Thousand Island Sauce. No surprises here and it tasted just like any other restaurant.

Overall it is the hype and the cartoon theme that creates a big attention. Comparing their Dim Sum to those down in the streets of Hong Kong, I would prefer enjoying the authentic ones. Pricing is more realistic at the usual Dim Sum Stall with better taste. However, if you are trying for an experience with something fanciful on Dim Sum, this place stands up.

Kam Wah Cafe

As we touch down and unloaded our luggage in our apartment, we started looking for Dim Sum around our accommodation even though everyone was quite tired after the night's flight. During that morning, there was not many breakfast places opened yet and it only left us with a few choices.

In the busy streets at rush hours, you can see the typical office workers rushing their way to work as per daily routine. Cafe like Kam Wah has prepared some "grab-&-go" food outside their stall.

What's are they selling on the streets?
Besides having media articles plastered at the shop front recommending their food, you can get to see the items menu with pricing. The menu is very good for foreigners like us as we can decide what to have instead of deciding it in the restaurant. With so many visits to Hong Kong, we kind of learn of their impatient culture, thus being too indecisive of what to have or taking quite sometime to order is at disadvantage to us.

Service was quick and decisive with experienced server who gave suggestions to our group for breakfast and share among ourselves. Interior of the "Cha Chan Ting" aka Cafe is a very typical and usual sight of a Hong Kong eatery with benches and tables, big posters and menus on the wall.

"Dan Tat" (In Cantonese) or Egg Tart in English is a common ordered breakfast /snack item in Hong Kong. The pastries were flaky and was not too sweet with the fillings. We also enjoyed the warm serving pastries thus all of us had ordered one each!

Thinking of having Kaya & butter here in Hong Kong with Polo Bun? No, apparently, the flaky top polo bun has only a slice small 5mm thick of butter sandwiched in the bun. Well, the taste was good with butter gradually melting on the pillow soft buns.

Having the plain polo with just butter, this is the upgraded version! Surprisingly it was good with the yummy Char Siew meat, distinctively lean added with mayonnaise, vegetables and tomatoes.

Knowing that we are sharing our portions, the server cut them into half and here's the cross section of it.

With food passing around among us, we were also getting our caffine fixed by consuming some tea or even Yuan Yang. Look at the 2 shades of colors, make sure you stir well before "use".

Unfortunately, my stomach started throwing tantrums on the first day of touch down and I have to keep myself warm with a traditional cup of tea served in this cute little "Black & White Milk" Cup.

Oily and apparently so! It's just that we could not help skipping such staples from the typical cantonese breakfast in Hong Kong. Just like the french toast, these breads were dipped with egg and fried to its golden brown perfection with crispy edges. Slice of butter was place on the top to further enhance its fragrance. Since its for sharing, we did not really mind having a small share of it!

Being an Asian and Singaporean, instant noodle is quite common in our household. I'm still not very use to having such noodles from the Cafe of Hong Kong but like it or not, having a bowl of such noodles with ham and egg has been a practice all these while in Hong Kong. Seriously, though simple and straight forward, the soup taste not bad!

Though service is known to be notorious in Hong Kong, I would say one of their server is quite understanding and recommended us items to be shared and even offered to cut the buns. Perhaps this is one in the minority times that we will get such service in Hong Kong.

Noordzee Mer Du Nord

Before it even reaches 5pm, Noordzee Mer du Nord was seen surrounded by people waiting for their seafood. Noordzee Mer Du Nord was one of the hit spot recommended online where one can enjoy some wine and seafood over at the counter or even with a dine in session. We made a mistake by returning back the store after a walk round the vicinity as many of the seafood were sold out when we were back on that rainy day.

The entire place was an eye opener with open concept from storage of seafood to cooking them on the spot over the counters. What I truly enjoy was the entire process where the preparation of food came close to my eyes, just right in front of me. Ordering process is rather straight forward, you order and paid on spot, thereafter when your food is ready, your name will be called.

I have no intention to consume any "unusual" sea creature but that dish seemed to be one of the last few items for sale and I had no choice. When asked what was that, they explained as "Sea Snails". I'm not a snail person and you should know this bowl of seafood soup just would not entice me much. However some hot soupy stuff would warm our body under the cold and rainy weather. The snails were pretty yummy surprisingly but the soup was overly salty.

With herbs and spices enhancing the sweet pan seared scallops and dipping them onto the sweet mayonnaise, it made this simple meal so perfect. Texture was perfect with some parts of it charred and was easy on the jaws.

Croquettes were deep fried and took longer time to served than the rest. The golden brown exterior texture accompanied by the leafy greens, tomato and lemon wedge had simply bought my appetite.

Biting down the croquettes carefully and revealing its marshy seafood fillings, I would say they were quality stuff. Seafood taste might be a little strong for some here and you can squeeze some lemon juice over to reduce the seafood smell.

This is a perfect spot in Brussel where you can enjoy quality and fresh street seafood cook right on the spot based on order. The different experience in leaning against the counter or even one of the high tables and consume the seafood while standing up was really not a usual practice we have in Asia. If ever I'm back again, I will visit this place for sure.

European Hotel

We all know that the Standard of Living in London is quite high and not mentioning the hotel too. It was nearing Christmas Season and most of the hotels were either fully booked or those left overs were very expensive a night. We booked European Hotel through the portal for our 4 days stay in London.

Hotel is conveniently located within 3 minutes of walk near King's Cross Station. Places of interest like Bristish Museum and Library are also walkable within 15 minutes. Room is equipped with free Wi-Fi, an en suite bathroom with shower. Wifi password is generated and use base on device, thus if you have 3 devices, you may ask them to give you 3 different passwords and each of them do have a validity.

There are no elevators to other room and we had to carry our luggages all the way up to the narrow wooden stairways.

Room is pretty compact and was quite different from what we seen from the pictures on the hotel booking page. Since we are out most of the time during the days and keeping in mind that hotel stay is expensive in London, we have to make do of the environment. The bed is abit soft but in short decent for a few nights stay without expecting much.

Environment was quite old English style and the room can only cater a small queen bed with a little study desk and TV.

Toilet may look cramp for some but if you only here for short stay like us, I find it relatively decent. One point to note that the ventilator / Fan in toilet may sound a little bit noisy when switched on.

Overall, besides having a good location near St Panceas Station. Despite having the exact same breakfast daily throughout my stay, I like the attitude of their friendly stuff over the reception and breakfast counter.
