Huat Huat BBQ Chicken Wing

While searching for some snacks over tea time in Food Republic, we came across Huat Huat BBQ Chicken Wing stall for its popiah and Kueh Pie Tee and proceeded to order so as to fill our stomach a little.

Huat Huat BBQ Chicken Wing

With so much price that we were paying for a piece of popiah, I thought it better be good. We ordered 2 popiah, one original and one with chilli and it went below expectation.

Popiah - $2.50 Per Roll
Overall, the popiah tasted decent with juiciness packed but lacked the sweet punch and fragrance. Still not bad and not the worse I had!

Cross Section of popiah
While waiting for the popiah to be ready, what caught my sight was the chicken skewers which was left hanging above the charcoal fire.

Over the Charcoal Fire
The aroma from the wings was intriguing, not only that its glistening brown surface on the wings were the selling point as well.

Chicken Wings - $1.50 per piece (min 3 pieces)
The marinade from the chicken was special, bringing some hints of ginger spices but not too heady. The wings were well handled, evenly roasted with drumlets separated from the wings.

Close up on the wings
Snacks from Huat huat were decent as an overall but if I have to choose between wings or popiah, I will grab the wings instead. Do note that there is a minimum order for the wings.

Seng Huat Homemade Fried Carrot Cake

It's not common to find carrot cake that was made from the scratch nowadays and we happened to chance upon another stall. Seng huat Homemade Fried Carrot Cake is humbly located in Yuhua Village Market & Food Centre.

Seng Huat Homemade Fried Carrot Cake
Unlike the factory made carrot cakes which are evenly cut into similar shapes and sizes, Seng Huat's was fried into irregular shapes and sizes with eggs. It comes with 2 version, the dark and white version and being just me, I will usually order the darker version. There were hints of "Chai Po" (preserved vegetables) and the whole plate was fragrant. What's good is that it was not too oily and price is definitely worth what we are paying for!

Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Café

Guten Tag! The way of saying good day in German. Visiting Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique Cafe has always been in the back of our mind. With years working in a German firm, I learn that German Cuisine were not just about beer and pork knuckles though it was being portray in such way.

Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Cafe

Boutique
Having visited Germany a year or two back, Stuttgart is one of the place I heard and still yet to be checked on my visited list. All I heard was their reputable black forest and cuckoo clock factory. S-Cafe was decked out with woods, giving a quaint environment. There were even large green pine trees to mimic the forest environment or even those beer gardens in Germany. Atmosphere was generally interesting and definitely relaxing. For those who love nature, this might be a good choice for you.

Environment
How can the trip to a German Cafe be completed without a sip of their beer? Food was all washed down by the bottle of Engel Radler.

Enger Radler - $13
While the partner is in need of some caffine to perk himself up with a cup of Iced Cappucino. It came as a little surprise as cookies were given and syrup was added separately.

Iced Cappucino - $7
A basket of bread and magarine spread was compliments from the cafe.

Compliments

Braised Beef Short Ribs was introduced by one of the server and that was not from the menu. I guess that dish was available on certain days only. Braised Beef was cooked to its tenderness which allowed meat to be easily removed from the bone and was supported by a bed of mashed potatoes and 2 slices of vegetables. It was crunchy and kind of reduce the smell of the beef Short Ribs. I was told that those vegetables were called watermelon carrot when I asked about them.

Beef Short Ribs - $28
The more than 100g large slice of Signature Black Forest Cake did not disappoint. It was rich and creamy but not cloying in its chocolate sponge and kirsch soaked cherries. Every layer was well define, given a good texture of what a Black Forest Cake was supposed to be. It's the best so far that I had ever eaten in Singapore.

The Carving Board

What's carving in Jurong East now? Looks like those residing on the west side start their rave on some western cuisine. Let's check it out!

The normal coffeeshop in the day has somehow turned into a bistro serving quality western food which is moderately priced in a modest setting.

The Carving Board
Having experience the similar concept in Bukit Merah area whereby a humble HDB coffeeshop had transformed into a Quality Western / European Eatery, I'm glad such concept is happening in the West, at least nearer to my home.

On the other hand, the down side is that it attracts crowds and long queuing time is inevitable, let alone weekends. Thus its recommended not to go there empty stomach as long waiting time is required.

Long Queue
The ordering process took away 20 minutes of our time in queuing and another 40 minutes while waiting for the food to be served.

Table Number
Barbecued Pork Chop was one of the recommendations under the Char Grilled category. Pork chop was served with salad greens, sauteed lyonnaise potatoes with pork drenched in their home made BBQ sauce.

Those sliced pan fried potatoes together with thinly sliced onions were awesome while the salad sides tasted a tad sour.

Barbecued Pork Chop - $9
Meat was well charred with burnt grilled lines yet not too dry and were succulent. However the level of marinate were subtle, whereby taste was not prominent.

Juicy Pork Chop
Opted the brown mushroom sauce over the rosemary sauce. Dish was made up of 3 portions, Salad Greens, French Fries and chicken chop.

Rosemary Chicken Chop - $7.50
Kitchen was very busy but standards of the food remained unchanged. It gave me a strong feel that the chef took pride in each and every order and perhaps the reason why the long queue as well as waiting time.

Chicken Chop
Presentation and standards are above average, actually quite luring to the empty stomach but just too bad that they were not enough to satiate the craving.

Rosemary Chicken Chop
Under the Classic or Signature Spaghetti, all dishes are topped with Parmesan Cheese and Parsley, served with Garlic Bread.

Spaghetti alla Carbonara - $8
As a carbonara lover, I would prefer their cream sauce to be creamier than this. The dish comes with a little surprise with poached egg apart from its standard ingredients like onions and bacon.

Garlic Toast
I have learnt my lesson not to go on an empty stomach. McDonalds is just across the road, perhaps we can take away some food while waiting? Even after an hour of wait for just a meal, I dont mind going back for their signature burgers but maybe in the weekdays evening.

Word of note for those who do not want to smell smoky after meal, do take up their alfresco seating.

Jpot

Jpot is a unique Singapore concept by culinary team of Jumbo Seafood. With 7 exquisite style of soup base from mild to spicy, it's uniquely Singapore Style of enjoying these flavours over the table in a comfortable, air conditioned setting with a serene view of the harbour overlooking part of Sentosa Island. Not only that, it's always a pleasure to dine in a hygenic environment like this. Ambience in Jpot was good, well lighted and with spacious dining area, what's more I like it best when I dont walk out smelling like a hot pot - that means ventilation was already well taken care of!

Jpot
Supported by the team of Jumbo Seafood, it already gave us strong assurance in the quality as well as standard of the food. So fret not, we just headed into the restaurant. Chinese New Year festive mood was all round in the atmosphere especially when hot pot is part and parcel of our reunion dinner in most families, not to mentioned that the place is ideally crowded.

Condiments Station
Servers were polite and asked if we prefer the Set Meal or the ala carte and of course we had chosen the latter since there were only 3 of us dining.  With the aid of technology advancement, tablets were all mounted to the dining table, positioned to an easy reach for all diners.  Such ordering system reminds me of  the Thai's MK Restaurant as well as China's Hai Di Lao. It seems that such advancement is indispensable now.  The only disadvantage to the senior citizen of my family is that it's quite hard to familiarize themselves with such devices in a short moment. Nevertheless, there are always some members from the family who will order and explain the ongoings, :). Else, I believe the servers are always ready to perform their best in job.

Ipad Ordering
Every head count needs to order a broth and I had the Superior Broth. It's one of the standard broths given and was tasty with garlic.

Superior Broth - $5.80
Besides having Tom Yum or Laksa, you may want to consider their herbal broth. It's tasty and not too diluted with chinese herbs floating.

Herbal - $5.80
Whereas the adventurous one ordered Bak Kut Teh which had pork ribs included in the broth. However the peppery semi clear broth was not to my liking as I prefer those in dark sauce.

Bak Kut Teh - $7.80
Beef Brisket was sliced thinly and there wasnt too much on a plate. It's best to go with the sauce after cooked.

Beef Brisket - $6.50
And similarly for the chicken slices too.

Chicken - $4
What I like best was their Cheese Pork Balls that was served elegantly with a thin long slice of cucumber as based. Be careful when its out especially when the cheese will ooze out burning the tongue if precautions are not taken.

Cheese Pork Ball - $5
Mum was wondering why the basket of mushrooms was so costly.

Mushroom Combine - $12.80
Fish Noodle was my favourite too. Instead of having them served in strings form, we were given a packet of fish paste and made our own noodles.

Fish Noodle -$5.80
Take a look at the thick fish noodle from the herbal broth.

Fish Noodle
Other than the usual carbo from the rice, diners get the chance to try the Vietnamese Pho.

Pho - $2.50

We ordered sides like Spinach Beancurd which was already deep fried and ready to eat. As it was just taken out from the fryer, they were tongue burning. Spinanch and Beancurd were distinctively separated as seen, yummy!

Spinach Beancurd - $4.80

Having Jpot is just like having steamboat on a small scale whereby you order what you can eat on a ala carte basis unlike dining in the usual hotpot, we tend to over order thinking that someone else on the table might want to eat, thus minimizing wastage in a way.

I do admit I like their environment but the variety of food was quite limited and quantity given was limited. Price may be a little dear for some. Overall, its still fine if you want to have some

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul

It's been sometimes since I last visited City Square in Johor Bahru and it came to our surprised when we saw this new shop front stating "Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul". As a Chendol lover as well as with a dialect group of Teochew, I gave me no reason not to try.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul
Interior was spacious and modern, an opposite sight from its store front which looked traditional.

Interior

However when it comes to the ordering counter, there is a mixture of both old school and modernized concepts. With the mosaic tiles in shades of greys applied onto the walls of the counter, it brought us an olden day feel to somewhere back into the 60s together with its black & white photographs near its menu.

Upon ordering, we will be giving this number tag with the big signage on Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul.

Order Number
Chendul was tasted light with the blend coconut milk but that did not make the taste of Gula Melaka stands up. Though it was chilled but if it is being served in metal spoons, it would give better scores to what I seek for in a bowl of chill dessert.

Chendol - 6.90 Rm
Ice Kachang was ordinary and even the syrup add no effects to the bowl of ice . Green beans, creamy corns, chopped peanuts, green colored sagos as well as "atap" seeds were added but still lacking in volume as compared to the shaved ice.

Ice Kachang - 5.90 Rm
All in all, desserts were passable, if I were to stamp my preference between these two, I would have Chendol voted.
