Proofer Bakery & Pizzeria (Closed)

If you feel hungry and need some grab while shopping in Westgate, there are quite a number of shops available for you to have some bite. While walking a few rounds in the basement, I spotted proofer and decided to try them out as they were the most outstanding stall among all commonly seen stalls.

Proofer Bakery & Pizzeria
A quarter pan of pizza cost $3.60 but if you are grabbing more like half a pan or even complete pan, you get the discounted price. Enjoy your gourmet pizza by having a few pieces, mix and match.

Cost of the Pizza
The must try will be their signature with ingredients consist of tomato sauce, cheese, sweet pineapple, beef, chicken ham, sliced chicken, capisicum, onions and diced tomato. A close taste to the usual hawaian pizza but with 100% tastier.

Proofer Signature
Smell of fungi and full of cheesy flavour! It's made up of tomato sauce, cheese, slices of mushrooms, capsicum and diced tomato - a no meat pizza if you are keen on one!

Simply Mushroom
Service received was friendly and polite. For every purchase, the pizza is heated up and placed into a paper bag with serviettes before passing them to customer. Well, I dont mind going back to enjoy other flavors and I totally like the idea that I can enjoy them at the go.

Joo Chiat Ang Mo Noodle House

Joo Chiat Ang Mo Noodle House? I was expecting an "Ang Mo" manning the stall but that was not the case. The original owner of this stall in Joo Chiat was tall and Caucasian looked alike, hence the name.

Besides the chewy noodles wanton mee, they sell fried oysters.

The stickiness and crispiness of the fried oysters were of perfect balance and it came with sweetness from the eggs. Not only that, it was not too dry and in fact they were rather moist. We were given 8-9 of oysters on a medium plate.

Besides the oysters, they are best to go with the zesty chilli sauce which gave good heat just to jolt the tastebuds.

Fried Oyster - $5 (Comes in $4, $5 & $8)

Old Airport Road Satay Bee Hoon & BBQ Steamboat

One thing I like about exploring food streets is its varieties of food, not only for its availability of different cuisines but rather for its a one stop shop where popular food from corners of Singapore gathered.

The exterior of the stalls shows a cart like with wheels reminding us of how people of the olden days make ends being a peddlers in the streets. But of course in such modern days, hygiene is more stringent.

Old Airport ROad Satay Bee Hoon & BBQ Steamboat

Enjoy the luscious mid spicy satay gravy over the fine strands of white bee hoon with Kang Gong, lean pork meat, bean sprouts, blood cockles and prawns.Items were fresh, especially the cockles. Delicious!

Chomp Chomp Goodluck BBQ Chicken Wings

Originated from Serangoon's popular Hawker Centre, Chomp Chomp and also probably the best hawker centre in Singapore. If you havent tried the ones in Chomp Chomp, you can have them from Chinatown Food Street, the taste is just as good!

Chomp Chomp Goodluck BBQ Chicken Wings

Looked at the glistering chicken wings! They were perfectly grilled with the skin crispy yet retaining its juiciness and moisture! Well marinated and barbecued, bringing out its tenderness and zest. A perfect hit to supper-goers if you are in Chinatown!

Chicken Wings - $1.70 Each

Otah was tasty as well but I find that the coconut fragrant and milk was too much for me to take.

Otah - $2

Chong Chong Ngoh Hiang Prawn Fritter

One of the best attractions and a must do for tourist is to walk down this nostalgic street style dining in Chinatown food street. With the newly renovated area with high ceiling canopy glass shelter and internal cooling system allowing diners to enjoy a fuss free meal regardless of rain or shine, day and night.

With so many spread of local delights available there, it was hard to have them all. Our first stop was Chong Chong Ngoh hiang Prawn Fritter which was just situated right next to our table.

Chong Chong Ngoh Hiang Prawn Fritter
Ngoh Hiang rolls are a unique Hokkien and Teochew dish served in many hawker centres.  Wrapped using beancurd skin, with a mixture of prawns, minced meat and spices. Items were selected and cost calculated was based on these selection. They were then put into the hot oil, fried and cut into pieces, then ready for serving.

Selection of  Ngoh Hiang Prawn Fritter

Besides Ngoh Hiang, I also like their "pink sausages" and fried chestnut cake. The chilli was spicy and it is recommended that you dab a little of the items onto the chilli to enjoy a burst of flavour.

The Snow Artisan

With concrete bricks stacking up all over the shop front, one can never tell that Bing Lang (The Snow Artisan) is actually an air conditioned place suitable to take a rest and enjoy a bowl of dessert after walking a number of streets in Chinatown.  My subconscious told me it is more of a hotel business until i saw the attractive graphics of their signature's dessert plastered just beside the door. I thought the decor was simply too traditional for a modern dessert shop. Well let's check it out.

Bing Lang (The Snow Artisan)
It was also to the closing hours but the snow artisan was still packed full house with customers and as noisy on a Friday Night while most of the desserts stops and places were ending their business day.

As we finally settled down for a table, a frail man about in his 70s approached our table and assist in clearing the table. We were rather curious and asked if he owns the shop and he replied his son did with a smile. He took his time to clear the tables one by one as the customers left while we went up to the counter and make our orders.

Too bad that traditional hot desserts were all sold out.

The signature Mango Snow ice was illustrated at its entrance. Snow Ice is a popular dessert originating from taiwan with a blend of fresh fruits, milk, cream, sugar and water. This mixture was later then shaved into paper-thin slices resembling snowflakes.

Mango flavored shavings was piled up with mango dices and mango "pops". Cooling and refreshing.

Fresh Mango Snow Ice - $6

Love the combination of Red Bean, Taro Q, Sweet Potato Q, Crystal Jade Jelly and black pearl. Totally reminds me of black ball especially when its grass jelly was smooth, silky in texture and the wobbly jelly was really cooling which aids in easing the heat. However the dish was not as cold as expected.

118 Beancurd.Soya Bean Drinks

118 Beancurd is located at one corner of the Food Centre with a flight of stairs infront linking to the carpark and market place below. I would not have notice how special 118 Beancurd is until I saw the long queue lined up in front of their shop on a Sunday Morning. Many were queueing for their freshly made soya bean drinks and beancurd.

118 Beancurd.Soya Bean Drinks
The silky and traditional bowl of beancurd was nothing but a comfort meal of a local. Besides its freshly made characteristics that make it outstanding, 118 Beancurd has no preservatives and Gypsum Powder included in the process of making these wobbly beancurd. This is very healthy.

Beancurd - $0.80 (Dine In)
Sweetness was controlled by adding not too much of syrup into the bowl as well as my cup of mixture of soya milk and grass jelly.

I guess such simple, healthy and pocket friendly stuff should not be given a miss. Therefore, if you happen to pass by Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre, do give these traditional goodness a try.
