Seremban Kee Mei Siew Pow [Closed]

When I first went to Seremban, I learnt that they are famous Siew Pow with sticky pork fillings under the cripsy chinese pastry. Ever since then, it had marked a deep impression in my mind. Unfortunately, Seremban pastries was not that "In Trend" during those days.

Seremban Kee Mei Siew Pow
Baked to golden brown perfection, these traditional flaky crusty and polished Siew Pow has a delightful aroma. Siew Pao Comes with 2 kinds of Fillings, Chicken and Pork. The only way to differentiate them is the sesame toppings on top of the chicken Pow Pastries.

Siew Pow
As we had our first bite of the Siew Pow, the sticky pork fillings was juicy and delicious. Once you put into your mouth, it melts! Yum Yum!

Stick Pork Fillings - Char Siew

Beside having their signature Siew Pows, they have pastries like Pineapple tarts. Specially made with the pineapple jam encased with the golden brown pastry too. Fillings tasted just right and not of the sweeter side.

Pineapple Tarts
Perhaps a fusion of the Portuguese and the normal English egg tarts in its appearance. The buttery fragrance had overwhelmed us as we take this mini tarts out from its baking aluminum cups.

Egg Tart
Seremban Kee Mei Siew Pow has a number of outlets in Singapore now. One do not have to travel all the way to Malaysia to enjoy such delicate pastries as its available within the island now. :) For those who yet to try these well known seremban pastries, do take a chance and have a try.

Yong Fatt Chang

After visiting Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre mostly in the evenings, I had finally got the chance to enjoy a breakfast there. While most of the common breakfast items like, fishball noodles, fried carrot cake, etc were opened in the evening, I spotted Yong Fatt Chang. They were selling porridge and I thought I had never seen them in operations during the evenings hours.

Stall of Yong Fatt Chang
A decent looking bowl of Porridge added with century egg, fried crackers and seasonings gave me a happy and simple sunday morning. Porridge was cooked till soften, no trace of rice grains found.

For those who likes noodles, Yong Fatt Chang has Ban Mian. I wouldnt mind going back again for breakfast. :)

Sheng Cheng

As I stepped into Bukit Timah & Food Centre, my mobile application popped up and notified me recommending that most of us will go for Sheng Cheng Fishball noodles as their breakfast.

Located among the stretch of stalls in Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre, Sheng Cheng is just like any other stall, nothing outstanding from their stall front. Perhaps what drew the most attention was the long queue lined up in front of their stall waiting for their food.

Order a bowl of Bak Chor Mee (Minced Meat Noodle) in dry version at a cost of $3. The amount of minced meat was generous spreaded on the bowl with fishballs, fishcakes, lettuce and mushrooms.

Soup was tasty and sweet packed with fried onion fragrance.

Meal with soup

The presentation overall of the Minced meat noodle was attractive and appetizing. Manning the stall alone, its hard for him to keep up with the speed of the incoming queues. However, I will say the 20 minutes wait was still worth waiting for!

MK Restaurants

For those who have been to Thailand, you would probably know of such famous steamboat restaurant by the name of MK. Established since 1986 and now with a number of food chains in Thailand, MK is considered successful after facing challenges from its competitors of similar industry.

For those who have not try, MK first outlet is located in Somerset 313 and the 2nd in Westgate. MK generally serves a mixture of Thai and Chinese cuisine. The main menu features Thai-style suki that is a hot pot of fresh meats and vegetables.

I took the opportunity and ordered their Shabu Mixed Slice Meat set for 2 pax.

Meat, Seafood, or mixed ball set?
With Technology advancement, MK had invested some amount on electronic menu similar to what we had in one of the local sushi bar chains. Requests and orders sent were all attended promptly by the servers.

Ordering System
While those who still prefer to have the feel of flipping the menu, dont worry, MK restaurants still have the hard copies available.

Menu
For the stock, I had the both the choices with the pot half filled with chicken stock and the other Tom Yum Soup. The chicken soup was not greasy. I preferred Tom Yum as it was very appetizing and spicy which was a good stomach warmer especially on a rainy day.

Every table has an induction cooker in-built and electricity is controllable at the side of the table.

Stock - Chicken Soup and Tom Yum - $4.90
Assorted vegetables include, mushrooms, jews' ears, tofu, bak choy, pumpkins, carrots, sweetcorn, Tang Hoon and Japanese seaweed.

Closer look of Vegetables Platter

MK Assorted Vegetable Platter(s) & 2 eggs - $18 + $1
Three types of meat, pork , chicken and beef was given. They were fresh and thinly sliced. For those who enjoy the Japanese way of eating, they can dipped these cooked slices into the eggs given.

Sliced Chicken, pork, beef - $8.40, $8.40, $11.60 (for 2 pax)
Noodles and rice are add on depending on individuals. To filled the stomach, we ordered a bowl of rice and we were surprised to see that the rice came in cone shape.

Additional Rice - $0.80

Besides enjoying the steaming pot of food, trying the MK Sauce is a must as this is their signature Suki Sauce imported straight from thailand using their secret recipe.

It went very well with those thin slices of meat and the taste was sweet, sour with Thai Spiciness altogether, bringing perfection to every bite.
MK Sauce
Last but not least, MK do have other attractive items on the menu which includes Hong Kong Style Roast meat as well as Dim Sum.

Tanaka Vegetarian

I came across one of the posts on my Facebook about Tanaka Vegetarian and decided to check out since there is a number of its vegetarian stalls around with good reviews.

On a public holiday morning, I was rather surprised at the queue that lined up besides their stall on their left and right. Those who want specific vegetarian dish like mock fishball noodles, mushroom noodles have to on the left while others who are ordering and selecting dish for their rice or noodles are to queue on the right.

Tanakan Vegetarian at Teck Whye

The typical presentation of a Singaporean's breakfast - however, this is not the normal economical bee hoon but more of a vegetarian style. Ordered fried noodles with kway teow with egg, cabbages and mocked char siew.

Fried Noodles

Overall, the meal was not greasy but tasty. The sweet tender mock meat was sweet and easy to chew on.

Mock Char Siew Meat

Order another plate with bee hoon filled with "Zai Er" (Cripsy cracker) adding crunch to the meal.

Plate of Bee Hoon
The plate was make up of mock sweet sour meat too with cucumbers and pineapple. They tasted as though the real meat, cripsy and hard but tasty!

Sweet Sour Meat
What I like best is its bitter gourd, it striked a good balance in sweetness and the natural taste of the bitterness from the bittergourd with fragrance of fried garlic. The black bean sauce with the softness of the vegetable went well with the fluffy bee hoon.

Bittergourd
In conclusion, I will say that there are not many popular vegetarian stalls around in the west of Singapore as compared to the east and Tanaka Vegetarian is one of the better choices. :)

Total Cost for 2: $6.20

Jamie's Italian

Jamie's, the british Celebrity cook that cooks Italian dishes on the TV had opened his first restaurant in Asia. Located in the Vivocity and this had been the talked of the town for the past few months. I had given it a miss when i passed by one of its franchise in Glasgow, UK due to my schedule. Therefore I'm pretty happy over the appearance of Jamie's Italian in Singapore.

Jamie's Italian
The menu was straight forward, just a piece of cardboard printed with their sides, mains, pasta etc. We decided to order the dishes and share among 4 of us so as to sample the food.

Menu
We ordered the Italian Spiced Chicken Wings as appetizer, recommended by the servers. It was a plate of free-range wings with smoked spicy tomato sauce coated at the exterior layer. However I still find that it will be better if the sauce accentuate into its meat.

Italian Spiced Chicken Wings - $12.50
Crispy fried with parmesan and rosemary! The overall presentation reminds me of the traditional chinese food, fried beancurd.

Famous Polenta Chips - $7.50
The stuffings was a little moist and filled with parmesan smell. One can find fried shrimps on the bottom of the bowl and this add on flavours to the entire dish.

Traditionally served with pancetta (an italian style bacon) where the pasta were cooked to Al Dente Perfection in its lemony cream sauce.

Penne Carbonara - $22 (Large)
The mains that steal the limelight throughout the meal was none other than their signature's Porchetta. I was stunned by the slow cooked pork belly that is infused with herbs, fennel and spices. Though fatty, its savoury and moist boneless pork that came with layers of stuffing had boast its cuisine. The glistering meal was paired with water cress salad as well and till now I can still remember the crackling bite I had from that layer of roasted skin. It's definitely worth the calories.

Jamie's Italian Signature's Porchetta - $35

Individual of these long and flat ribbons are main characteristics of Tagliatell. Somehow the dish reminds me of dry version of Ban Mian. Beef and pork were used with ragù (Italian Meat Sauce) , Chianti & Parmesan packed with herby fragrance from the breadcrumbs.

Tagliatelle Bologese - $22 (Large)
For fish lovers, one can order the baked salmon as its main. Whipped lemony artisanal ricotta, balsamic-roasted veg & a zesty, crunchy salad. Decent enough!

Baked Salmon - $23.50
Though we were full, we managed to squeeze some desserts down our stomach, especially when Tiramisu was so inviting. Strong and intensed coffee-flavour triffle with orange mascarpone and chocolate. It came with orange zest and was soft, totally out of our expectation.

Tiramisu - $11.50
I'm glad that I had make the right choice. Out of the 3 desserts ordered, I love this best. The panna cotta was wobbly and was paired fantastically with the mixed berries compote without being too cloying.

Creamy Panna Cota - $9
Tangy with generous serving of meringue and came with limoncello & crunchy pistachio brittle but I still prefer the former.

Trutti Frutti Lemon Meringue - $11.50
Service was friendly, funny and polite. The service staff was efficient and got our plates changed promptly.

Happy Waitress at our service!
With Jamie's friendly service staff at our service and its inviting Italian style dishes, it is likely that I will make a return visit to explore other food, perhaps more on its pasta as this is what they are well-known for!

The Old Stall Hokkien Street Famous Prawn Mee

As you walk along the corridoor and turned your heads towards the Old Stall Hokkien Street Famous Prawn Mee stall, a friendly uncle who was just standing in front of the stall will start singing praises to his famous prawn mee. His way of marketing his bowls of prawn mee was impressive as I seldom see many hawkers who took so much pride expressing themselves.

The Old Stall Hokkien Street Famous Prawn Mee
We order the prawn mee with pork ribs and service was not only friendly but generous. In terms of condiments like chilli powder, soya sauce etc.

Prawn Mee with Pork Ribs

Pork ribs was cooked to tender and packed with flavour in the prawn mee. Although prawns was not fantastically big, their prawn broth was indeed very tasty. Another side note was that ab article indicating "No MSG" sign was printed and plastered in front of the stall.
