Dim Sum Wang

Dim Sum Wang was opened this year 2013 and their Dim Sum was in popular demand especially over the weekends. Even with a list of 35 items available from the stall, the dim sum will more or less cleared out if you were late for breakfast. Knowing the trend, we went there pretty early about 7.30am on Saturday Morning.

Dim Sum Wang

Here comes our big breakfast on a Saturday Morning! There were no dim sum trays served here but instead disposable plates were used but do remember to add some weight on the empty plates after finishing else they will be blown away by the fans. :)

Breakfast

Love this paper thin rice roll with chopped Char Siew stuffed under the translucent layers. Added with the soya sauce and oil, it gave a good fragrance.

Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun - $2.50

Yum Yum, see the Char Siew meat now?

Char Siew Meat in Rice Roll

Often known as "Har Kao" in Cantonese which means Shrimp Dumplings when translated. The usual practice, 3 in a plate with tracing paper as base to prevent this sticky fine crystal skin from sticking on the plate. Prawns were just as succulent as what we had expected.

Steamed Shrimp Dumplings - $2.50

These carrot cakes were only prepared base on order and about a wait of 5 minutes was required from the lady. Hot from the oil wok, I like its crispy brown exterior. Though color was not even on them, these carrots cakes were soft to chew on.

Fried Carrot Cake - $2.50

Har Kao checked. Siew Mai's was in too. Topped with orange fish roe, these yellow bite-size minced pork and shrimp meat were tender and delicate.

Steamed Siew Mai - $2.80

My favourite Custard Bao that cannot be missed. The buns were packed filled with golden flowing custard as its name suggest. Just a bite would all the fluid oozing out of the bun. It's better if we could suck them out but do becareful, its hot.

Golden Flowing Custard Bao - $3 for 3

This is a good Dim Sum Fix in the neighbourhood especially when prices are more towards a reasonable range. For budget Dim Sum, Dim Sum Wang is recommended.

Grandma's - Proudly Singaporean

Grandma's, a local restaurant has been recently opened in Basement selling local food with a good range of Hokkien, Peranakan, chinese and Malay food. The setup was rather simple with walnut furnishing as its theme color.

Grandma's Proudly Singaporean

Upon settling down, this crispy crackers were served to us in a wooden weaved basket. The hungry us had the whole basket munched up as we were very hungry.

Tibits - $1.60
Even its menu, it showed a grandma preparing dishes in the kitchen. The environment told us that she was using some traditional method of cooking over the slow charcoal fire.

An irresistible combination of savoury pilaf-style rice, succulent prawns, beef rendang and golden-brown chicken drumstick. Simply authentic!

Nasi Bukhari - $14.90

These thick and fat egg noodles were wok fried together with dark soy sauce with fresh seafood and chicken. Totally classic Hokkien dish and not to miss. If you like fried Udon, this is quite close to one!

Hokkien Noodles - $1 (promotion with main course)

One of Grandma's favourites, the San Bei Ji literally means 3 cups chicken when translated consists  chunks of chicken slow cooked with ginger, garlic and chili with a dash of basil for the unique's Grandma's flavour. Served in an earthen pot and garnished with a generous portion of dark soya sauce and spring onion.

San Bei Ji - $12.90

The grass jelly drink was under promotion and a cup cost just $1. A good thing about the drink is that they had actually separated the sugar syrup, giving the customer a choice to add them according to their preference.
Grass Jelly Drink - $1

The Cendol is a must try as it brings out the original flavour with red beans, cendol jelly, jackfruit with shaved ice topped with fresh fragrant coconut  milk and gula melaka.

While Sago Gula Melaka was filled with pearl sago drenched in a generous serving of fresh coconut milk as well as Gula Melaka.

Brother's Rojak

Brother's Rojak is located in Clementi Central in See Lam Hern Coffeeshop. I believe that those who stay in the West would most probably know the popularity of Brother Rojak. Suitable for Vegetarians and Muslim Pals, their Rojak cost at a range from $3 - $8 depending on the size. However additional items like Tau Pok, Century Egg and different grades of Cuttlefish can be added at an additional cost.

Brother Rojak

Service was very friendly. The happy and cheerful brothers were efficient and ready to serve despite standing throughout the operation. I have been patronizing the stall for more than 10 years myself, their service level are still the same.

My favourite add on would be Century Egg and Tau Pok. I love the chilled century egg that was taken out from the fridge paired with preserved vegetables. The Tau Pok is also one of the must try as they were grilled insteadily on spot with cucumber and beansprouts as stuffing. They were cut into 4 portions, served warm and very crunch.

The prawn paste was loaded with chopped peanuts without being cloying, stuff like Fried Fritters (You Tiao) , Bang Guang, Pineapple, Lime Skin, cucumber and ginger flower is added. Ingredients were fresh and the level of sweetness is alright. Perhaps the only rant I had was that no jellyfish is added unlike the one I had from Balestier Hoover Rojak.

Rojak - $4 + 2 Tau Pok + 1 Century Egg = $6.80

One good thing about their service is that, they actually care to ask customers if they will like to have the sauce separated when taking away unlike most of the other stalls, they would have mixed them all in without further asking.

Tom Yum Goong

The stir fried Kai Lan is an additional add on to our lunch over the chicken rice stall's Oyster Sauce Vegetables. I'm glad that we had make the right choice by choosing this delicious green as our side dish.

Although Tom Yum Goong is specialised in Thai Food, vegetables dishes were also part of their menu.

Tom Yum Goong

Often when vegetables were cooked too long, they will start to turn yellowish and I would like to emphasize that a substantial skill is required to maintain the vibrant green color of the vegetables.

The softness of the vegetables were perfect and every part of the leafy greens were coated with a layer of its good tasting sauce in good consistency but not any oily

Added with fried shallots and minced garlic, the simple dish is ready to be served to our tables.

Jubilant Hainanese Chicken Rice

What's the queue over at the corner of Pasir Panjang Food Centre? Well, its none other than the Jubilant Haianese Chicken Rice. By joining the wait, it took up almost half our lunch time (20 minutes). Let's check out whether it's worth our wait?

Jubilant Haianese Chicken Rice @ Pasir Panjang Food Centre

It is rather common to practice self service in Hawker Centres and one good thing about it is that we often judge popularity of the stall by the length of the queue. The queue won't lie most of the time. :)

Condiments like chilli, black sauce and ginger puree were free flow. These are the mains if you want to give the delicious meal additional flavours. Although the chilli looks watery, the level of spiciness is powerful enough for some. The bowl of ginger looked good to me in its faint yellow color added with some spices.

Self Service
Look at the succulent plate of poached chicken. It's actually half a chicken shared among four pax. If you are dining in group, it will be more economical to share a plate as an individual portion would cost $3. The chopped chicken is stacked on slices tomato and cucumbers and drenched with soy sauce and sesame oil. A good dab into the condiments would give additional punch in flavours.

Half Chicken - $11
Rice is fluffy, packed full of fragrance with hints of pandan. From its color, it does really tell us that it was more than the ordinary we had eaten from most other stalls. What's more, the portion was rather big, therefore enjoy the texture of these grains which was individually separated.

Rice - $0.50 Per bowl
Last but not least, each of us was given a bowl of clear chicken broth sprinkled with spring onions.

Beans & Cream, The Simple Cravings in Life

"The Simple Cravings in life", well said from their business tagline. It did really match how I felt after craving for days since I last went there on Monday and they were closed.

Beans & Cream

The shop was relatively new in the area and only accept cash or EZ Link payment. For patrons who are looking for ATM, the nearest will be at Bukit Gombak MRT Station. The shop was compact and space was rather limited. Manned by a humble couple, their service were generous.

All Flavours from Beans&Creams were home-made. Be most welcome to request for any Ice Cream Flavour try out before purchasing them.

The couple were polite with service above average. Price of the Ice Cream were clearing indicated in the price list plastered on the wall.

Shop Interior
Besides helping ourselves with the free flow of ice water by the side of the counters, these flower biscuits are complimentary for the dine in customers but it is limited to 1 scoop per dine in customer, remember :)

Complimentary Flower Biscuits
A moment of insanity, we had kept their waffles machine from going hot with 4 plates of waffles. Ice Cream to me is just insatiable especially when it comes to pairing with these waffles.

Waffles with Ice Cream costs $6.50 but with premium Ice Cream ordered, an additional of 80cents is required.  Vanilla is one of the premium flavours, their ice cream was creamy with visible Vanilla Bean Specks which consists a pleasant faint vanilla scent.

The presentation looks yummy with the scoop of vanilla ice cream topped the stacking waffles with  chocolate and maple syrup over the plate. They were sweet but not cloying. The drizzle of icing sugar over the waffle was used sparingly giving a perfect final touch to the savoury dessert.

Waffle with Ice Cream - $6.50 + $0.80 (Premium Ice Cream - Vanilla)

Scattered among the classic flavors, Rum and Rasins were more towards the unique tastes with alcohol filled. It looks pretty divine with its rum soaked raisins diffused through the creamy, smooth ice cream but still a little sweet for me. Well, I guess the local ice cream chains has a challenger here.

Waffle with Ice Cream - $6.50 + $0.80 (Premium Ice Cream - Rum & Raisins)

Bitter sweet tasting ice-cream, dark chocolate, it is! As creamy as it was taken, are you shaken by these two yummy-licious scoops of sweet flavours? For the sweet tooth, Cookies and Creams is a good bet. Enjoy the roughness over the smooth creamy white cream from the crushed cookies. :)

Waffle with Ice Cream - $6.50 + $2.50 for Additional Scoop (Dark Chocolate, Cookies & Creams)

While waffles do taste delicious plain, these sweet nibbles were perfect with Pistachio and Earl Grey. Its thickened size was cripsy and soft at the same time. Yums! Pistachio and Earl Grey fans, this cant be missed. Each mouthful of pistachio was burst full of nutty flavour, driving me nuts. While the Earl Grey was light, infused with sweet scent nature from the tea.

Waffle with Ice Cream - $6.50 + $2.50 for Additional Scoop +  $0.80 Premium Flavour (Pistachios & Earl Grey)
I'm please after trying out a number of their flavours, satisfying my crave. Overall, I find that their ice cream were decent but not to die for. But frankly speaking, I love their instant production of waffles. they were outstanding.

Azmina's Briyani

Azmina's Briyani, from it name it somehow had suggested that I should give its Briyani a try especially when its signboard advertised its Chicken Briyani with a delicious looking plate of the Indian Cuisine. There were 2 types of Briyani available, Mutton and Chicken where the price is the same at $5 per plate.

Azmina's Briyani
Looks like the Papadum (Disc shape Indian Cracker) is missing here, perhaps they had missed them out. The portion of Briyani was huge, served in a tray with gravy separated by containing in a disposable bowl. The yellow ginger rice was soft and fluffy, tasted a little spicy with the Briyani gravy added.

Chicken Briyani - $5

The piece of chicken meat given was tender and big in size.

Close up of Chicken

Besides the big portion of meat, I also enjoy the sweet and sour  "Ah Zhar" that comes with the dish.
Just hope that I can have more portion of them.

"Ah zhar"

Since there is no plate, after eating, it is best to clear the table ourselves to prevent the wind from blowing them away. Another thing to note, try avoiding from sitting under the lamps or any exhaust pipes as they are the common areas where birds will rest on and starts doing business there.
