Oasis Taiwan Porridge 海京楼台湾粥

Craving for porridge? Have you visited the Taiwan Porridge place that has been in business for more than 38 years? Oasis Taiwan Porridge is previoulsy located next to our Indoor Stadium in Kallang opposite the old National Stadium. They have relocated to Toa Payoh Town Park that is opposite the HDB hub and also next to Toa Payoh Swimming Complex.

A homely taste of velvety porridge with sweet potato included. Best that its free flow and a big warm pot of it was kept by the side table for you to refill.

Refillable Porridge
The Prawn Roll looks abit dry here rather than the glossy appearance but we were all glad that it was not greasy. The fillings were hot and we took caution when sinking our teeth down into it.

Prawn Roll - $8 (Small)
"Chye Poh" egg aka Preserved Raddish comes in a beautiful round shape and was yummy. It was not salty and even taste as good alone without the porridge. Texture was crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Wow!

Chye Poh Omelette - $10
This was one of the signature Teochew dishes that we had ordered. Braised duck with Tau Kwa was soaked in sweet savoury braised sauce. I will recommend the dish as the meat was not too "old", easily chew and succulent. Every piece was well immersed in the "Lor Chap" aka Braised Sauce and just goes very well on the plate.

Braised Duck with Tau Kwa - $16 (Small)
If you eat Pig's Intestine, you will definitely like this as these braised intestine was well handled and does not have any gamy taste. In fact the combination of salted vegetable and intestine had executed well.

Braised Pig Intestine with Salted Vegetable - $9 (Small)
Forget about the calories, the stew pork is definitely awesome. With distinctive layers of the pork that melts in your mouth. Biting on them is effortless with such fork tender meat and the best thing was that it was not greasy at all.

Stew Pork - $10 (Small)
If you are planning for a family meal, Oasis Taiwan Porridge will be a good choice. For its simple and no frills meal with nostalgic environment, moreover they have big round tables which is good for families with kids too.

Ah Chiang's Porridge

When anyone of us talks about Porridge cooked by Charcoal, Ah Chiang's Porridge automatically comes into my mind. Ah Chiang's porridge serves a selection of traditional Cantonese porridge thick and smooth with your choice of ingredients.

The cups of drinks were all prepacked. The Luo Han Guo drink was chilled and served, not too sweet or bitter. Do explore the cup botttom for the Longan flesh.

Luo Han Guo Drink - $1.80
The winning part of their porridge is none other than the smoothness in them. It definitely looks like a paste to me at the first look. I was scalded but the porridge somehow when i accidentally dipped my fingers into them. Its so piping hot even though there are no sights of vapour emitting from the bowl.

Mixed Pig Organs Porridge - $6.60 (Big)
Stir and beat the egg to mix among the plain white porridge to find the mix ingredients. The livers were abit overcooked and hard in texture. For those who are so used to having Fried Fritters (aka You Tiao), they can be ordered separately.

Pork Liver
Just like the bowl of pork porridge, the significance lies in their ever smooth texture that even in such circumstances that I'm having a different ingredients in the bowl, they were somehow got left out. The scene stealer is still eventually the whites and not those century eggs.

Century Egg Porridge - $4
Given the choice of 2 types of raw fishes, I had chosen Si Dao Fish. Si Dao Raw Fish comes with 3 other colors that makes the dish's presentation stands up. With The shredded ginger, cut chills and spring onions to reduce the smell of what raw fishes give and the use of sesame oil. It makes a great plate of fish sashimi!

Si Dao Fish (Raw) - $5.30

Teochew Porridge

Lim Joo Hin is one of the famous Teochew Porridge Stalls that I have ever come across in Tiong Bahru area. They are holding up 2 units of space with some outdoor seats available. One would probably get carried away and spend a long time in front of the stove to choose from the wide arrays of dishes lined up! My previous visits had left big impressions as the lady boss was rather fiery and grumpy. Thus we try avoiding her for any order and go to her helpers instead.

After making selections, we were told that the dishes will be send right to our table and were asked to have the seat first.

Within minutes after the order, a thin old man with grey hair who spoke the traditional and fluent Teochew carried a tray full of dishes and walked towards us. He placed the dish one by one onto our table. Service was prompt and good.

I am not a fishcake fan especially when it comes to such white traditional white cakes but this is great. Their fishcake was smooth, bouncy and biting on them makes it effortless.

Chye Poh (Preserved Vegetables) Egg Omelette was tasty but I find that the sweetness level was abit on a high side and concluded that sugar was added during the cooking process. However this Chye Poh fillings are rather light in taste and the dish blends in well with a bowl of plain porridge.

Lim Joo Hin has a special way of serving the "Lala" (calms) dish. These shells were cooked with fermented beans and abit of spiciness.

What's the characteristics of a Teochew porridge? You will know after slurping down this warm bowl of porridge. The teochew porridge is not those gluey porridge nor the gluey congee we normally have. One will get to see and taste the soften rice grains under the "am" (In Dialect, the chalky layer of water content which is supposing to be cooling to the body).

Another noteworthy item of Lim Joo Hin's is its braised duck. The duck was tender drenched in right amount of sweet black sauce adorned by the leafy greens of coriander. Portions of lean meat as well as some fatty meats can be found on the duck.

The braised Chap Chai was soft and tasty, till the extend that a toothless person can consume them without any issue. The cabbages were braised together with carrot as well as Dong Fen (Vermicelli).

In conclusion, I found find that its pricey and there is one 24 hours Porridge stall in the district that may sell about half its pricing. However, this may be a quick alternative as the other stall is usually pack with people and takes up some waiting time.
Cost: S$24.20
