Ratna Chicken Rice

I was craving some Muslim Owned Chicken Rice and decided to head out to Makan Shiok. Ratna offers a standard fare of Chicken Rice and Noodles dishes, with a variety of dishes similar to the non-muslim stalls too.

Stall of Ratna Chicken Rice

We ordered 2 portions of chicken rice set that comes with some greens, roasted chicken, rice and soup.

Here's our order

Fried onions were heavily used as garnishing in their soup as well as the greens. The texture and fragrance of chicken rice were not within our expectations.

Chicken Rice Set - $5

The vegetables were blanched but tasted quite raw and bland to me if not for the additional fried onions and sauce from the chicken, it will be very plain.

Vegetables on the plate

The roasted chicken was a bit dry on its skin and the texture was softened by the sauce. All in all, the chicken rice is decent to fill the stomach.

Duo Ji 多記馳名豬腸粉

While the Hawker Center is packed with people and I stumble across this section whereby I'm sitting right in front of the stall and observing streams of people queueing up for this.

They have been around for the longest time and have their own team of faithful fans around. Duo Ji is also known for its unique way of cutting up rice rolls.

Duo Ji

Unlike the Cantonese Style Chee Cheong Fun (CCF) whereby this traditional breakfast item is usually made painstakingly hot on the spot, Duo Ji had theirs freshly supplied by their supplier every morning. What could have possibly demanded the long queue?

The CCF is generously spread with fragrant oil and sweet sauce. Their chilli sauce also enhances the flavour of the plain rice rolls and finally, sesame seeds were drizzled on top of it. Though these were from suppliers, I would say that their quality was not of the usual factory-made ones. The texture was soft and springy.

Chee Cheong Fun - $2

If you want to have a taste, do plan it well as they are usually sold out as early as 9.30am in the morning.

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is probably our nation's most popular chicken rice stall known by locals and foreigners in one of Singapore’s iconic hawker centres, Maxwell Food Center. Even Anthony Bourdain, the American celebrity chef and food program host once commented that their rice is exceptionally fragrant and delicious on its own.

Over the years, Tian Tian has seen expanding its business into Hawker Centers and even Restaurants like this. We chanced by their outlet in Jalan Pari Burong while sheltering away from the rain amidst our exercise. The place was spacious and airconditioned with lesser Dine-In customers due to the pandemic and partially because of the weather, many were seen packaging food away.

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice in Jalal Pari Burong

We ordered a small portion of Hainanese Pork Chop as a side dish. The Pork Chop was breaded and fried to golden brown with onions and its sweet savoury sauce drenching them. The meat was tender and overall was decent.

Hainanese Pork Chop - $8 (Small)

The meal for 2 pax was served with 2 bowls of soup, rice and a plate of steamed chicken.

Hainanese Chicken Set for 2 - $11.60

The portion for 2 Steamed chicken was dressed with scallion as well as coriander and drenched with the piquant sauce that most chicken rice stalls would use. The meat was smooth and tender with transparent layers of "collagen" found on the underside of the skin.

Steamed Chicken

These are the kind of sauces not to be missed when I'm having Chicken Rice. On a side note, their chilli hits right on the spot, firey and garlicky, definitely good to dip the steamed chicken into it.

Ginger, Black Sauce and Chili

Rice is grainy with a good texture and packed with fragrance. Look at the glistering coat on the rice, yummy!

Chicken Rice

Though reputable among the locals and especially my foreign friends who raved about it, I find that with so many reputable chicken rice stalls in Singapore, we are really spoilt for choices and therefore, my vote for chicken rice still goes somewhere else.

Tanjong Rhu Prawn Noodles

Chance by Chin Sin Huan Eating House as it was popular for its Tanjong Rhu Pau but this popular Pau & Dim Sum Stall is not opened on the weekend.

Chin Sin Huan Eating House

We decided to stop by this place for a bowl of Tanjong Rhu Prawn Noodles which was cooked with love as indicated on the signboard.

Stall of Tanjong Rhu Prawn Noodles

A traditional bowl of prawn noodles whereby the prawns were already deshelled. A decent taste of prawn soup without being too oily or overpowering with the prawn stock.

Prawn Noodle Soup - $4

The soup was decently sweet with ingredients like fishcakes, bean sprouts, prawns and Kang Kong.

Simple Ingredients

The taste of the bowl of soup from the Prawn Noodle Dry is slightly different from the soup we had earlier on. The taste was a tad more concentrated.

Prawn Noodle Dry - $4

Perhaps, the taste is of no comparison to those savoury prawn broth and big prawns from the viral prawn noodles stall online, the taste is more on the basic side on how a simple bowl of Prawn Noodles would taste like from the hawker. I would say that this bowl of prawn noodles is still comforting enough to fill the stomach.

I was impressed as soon as I caught sight of the Stoke Black Cake which was delivered right to my doorsteps. The packaging was out of my expectation for it was boxed up in transparent material. I thought this is a great way of displaying such a beautiful cake especially when it is hand-carried without any other carrier.

To perfect the presentation, the box is adorned with a ribbon, nicely tied up.

Hi Leskmi Nasi Lemak

While waiting for its neighbouring stall, The Original Katon Laksa, to be opened, we decided to have some Nasi Lemak. Hi Leskmi Nasi Lemak is a family run business in Whampoa Market and is apparently quite popular.

Stall of Hi Leskmi Nasi Lemak

Set A comprises of Sunnyside egg, Ikan Billis with peanuts and one fried chicken wing. The set comes with a slightly green fragrant pandan rice that gives off some hints of coconut flavours.

The Sambal Chili is laudable and to die for. It is delicious and contains smoky flavours. It has both a sour and sweet taste that strikes a good balance with a tad spicy note. Pairing the chilli together with the items on the plate was excellent especially when the wing is crispy.

Set A - $4.50 + Otah $1

The service was friendly and the food was better than average. Honestly, I do not mind making a return to Roxy Square to try out the food again.

One Prawn & Co by Red Marble

One Prawn Noodle is by a band of young and passionate individuals who seek to keep the Singaporean culture and heritage alive. Their prawn noodles came from inspiration from both Penang prawn noodles and Japanese Ramen Broth. Gwyneth Ang with an experience of more than 10 years heads One Prawn Noodle.

One Prawn & Co
One Prawn & Co

I went there on a weekend and there was already a long queue in this coffee shop environment. A good thing was that we were handed the menu and got to decide what to order while in line waiting.

While waiting for the food, we ordered some beverages.

Ice Lemon Tea & Barley
Ice Lemon Tea & Barley - $2.50 each

No worries about under or over-ordering, just try out their recommended selection of fried Chinese fritters consisting of Crispy Prawn Cracker, QQ Sausage Handmade fishcake, Pork Ngoh Hiang Roll, Century Egg and Fried Beancurd.

Ngoh Hiang Platter
Ngoh Hiang Platter - $11.50

I ordered the soup version of Prawn noodles with noodles of my choice. One Prawn Co served the noodles and ingredients separately.

Noodles Soup
Noodles Soup

While I have ordered the soup version of prawn noodles, I still get to have a bowl of earthen clay pot soup with ingredients. In fact, all prawn noodles ordered will come with an earthen pot of soup no matter if you order soup or dry version.

The broth was rich and full-bodied. They brew for hours in order to achieve the taste. Not only that, every bowl of soup is painstakingly made daily, making sure that the prawn head were well blended and squeezed to adjust the distinctive flavours. This unique way of extracting flavours stands out from most Prawn Noodle Stalls.

Lala & Small Prawns
Lala & Small Prawns - $8

The Lala were fresh and the amount given was quite a handful. It enhanced the seafood taste of the soup and also its chewy meat with the naturally sweet flavours was something I'm looking forward to.

La La

We had the Dry Prawn Noodles with Braised Pork Ribs & Small Prawns too. The pork ribs were cooked to fall off the bone kind with the slightest bitting effort. The soup in the claypot was rich and robust, with a taste slightly different from the Lala & Small Prawns version.

Prawns were easily de-shelled and with this, we quickly toss them into the dry noodle and mixed them together with lard, sauce, Kang kong and beansprouts.

Braised Pork Ribs & Small Prawns
Braised Pork Ribs & Small Prawns - $8

After all, I will say that this is not a usual bowl of "Hae Mee" (Prawn Noodle). Besides using a claypot to hold the warmth of the soup, the soup holds a unique taste and best, no MSG was used.
