Restoran Ole Sayang

In Melaka, one of the Cuisines not to be missed will be their Nyonya Food. As it was a long weekend due to Public Holidays, selection of Nyonya Food was rather limited due. We visited Ole Sayang as our 1st Nyonya Food for the trip. Facade was rather traditional, wooden doors with Tinted Glasses. With doors being closed, we  have to walk closer and push the doors to check if its operating for the day.

Restoran Ole Sayang Nonya Food
We were stunned by the huge portion as we only ordered small sizes. Our orders came quickly in minutes after ordering. Sambal Sotong was a tad spicy and quite ordinary.

Sambal Sotong (Small) - RM 13.00
Of course we would prefer the Pork Version to Ayam (Chicken) but too bad this is a Halal Restaurant and this had to be served in Ayam. Love its murky gravy with mushroom, potatoes and big pieces of chicken meat in it, however, it tasted oily and we could not finish such a big bowl.

Ayam Pongteh (Small) - RM 17.00
Seems that the Tau Hoo is their signature dish since it bears the name of the Restaoran. Two big cubes of Tau Hoo was given, coated with generous amount of fermented bean sauce with fried onions, spring onions and chilli.

Tau Hoo Ole Sayang (Small) - RM 9.00
Rice is served in a basket with banana leaves. However the price of rice is based on per pax. Texture and fragrant is ok.

Rice - RM 1.50 Per Adult
There were mixed reviews on Restoran Ole Sayang and our personal experience was not very ideal. Rude service was rendered as we were told off to sit at one of the corner as there was only 2 pax of us, even though we had sat in another table for a while. The old lady service crew ordering service is impatient and kind of brush off everything when we asked if there is chendol, she rudely repair no. After which she mumbled and she walked away.

Thinking back of their shop Front which states 亲切, I will like to reemphasize that their service is a far cry from the meaning of the Chinese Characters. Entire dining experience was not too favorable to us and for sure this will be the first and also the last time here.

Butao King

A night without the local colleagues had let us here... just a few minutes walk away from our Hotel in Shatin. By words of mouth and the look of its crowd into the restaurant, the choice of our dinner looked quite promising enough although it maybe just some boring Japanese Ramen for some.

Butao King aims to bring out the most authentic Japanese Ramen to Hong Kong ramen lovers and have a few outlets in Hong Kong. Their Signature bowl is Tonkotsu ramen and to maintain the quality and services like what Japan does, they have invited Japanese consultants to mange it.

Butao King
There was a queue but we were quite lucky to be seated in quickly however, like any Hong Kong eateries, we were used to their table sharing culture. They do have Ramen Bar counters for you to sit at and you can enjoy the busy movements of their chef through the open concept kitchen.

Open Concept Kitchen
I thought of seeing some extensive menu but do not expect much from here as food items in there were pretty limited as they are very specialized in making their ramen.

Menu
Ordering process in its simplicity with a slip that you can circle your choice of
(1) Flavour of Noodles from Original, Black, Red and Green

And best of all, every items in the bowl can be tailored to the amount that you want.

  • Soy Sauce Ranging from Less to More
  • Fragrant Oil
  • Garlic
  • Char Siew Meat ( Lean or fatty Meat)
  • Vegetables type
  • Spicy Level
  • Thickness of Noodle
  • Hardness of Noodle
Order Chit
I'm feeling abit of adventurous and tried out their Green King. Fancied about this fusion in its basic signature creamy pork soup stock, infused with olive oil and fresh basil leaves. The Parmesan cheese powder that topped the ramen gave a good punch and brings out the flavour of the Green King! Its kind of Italian Inspired like having your pasta in Pesto sauce.

Green King - HKD $96
Fairly consistent texture from the Ramen and we were quite please to be serve rather quickly despite of the uncomfortable and cramped surroundings. You can see the strands of Ramen coated with the fat-slicked broth, glistering and says "come eat me".

Type of Noodle - Thin
Thinly sliced and tucked by the side of the bowl, these pieces of Char Siew gave the melt-in-the-mouth bite. It was tender and easily tears and fell into the soup. I bet that you will savour every bite of it!

Lean Meat
There are choices for add on like seaweed, black fungus, add soup and we had added one Onsen Egg each.

Add on - Onsen Eggs
Lovely Onsen egg that looked so runny and yummy. At the look of it, I could not wait to have a good bite on it. It's undeniably awesome to have an Add On like this!

Yummy and Happy Tummy
You may want to skip the crowd by going before peak hours. Too bad Butao King isn't available in Singapore but if I have the chance to be back in Hong Kong, I will like to try out their other types of Ramen Flavours.

Wheeler's Estate

Was stunned by the beautiful settings of Wheeler's Estate in Selectar Aerospace Area. The land has housed a few F&B establishment in the colonial buildings, giving a total different kind of dining experience as soon as we stepped onto the big piece of land.

Wheeler's Estate
The place was large and charming surrounded by greeneries.

Wheeler's Estate
The place is indeed instagram worthy and suitable for food bloggers and instagrammers.

Aeroplane Design
Not only that, families with children are recommended here for this is another kid's heaven with big playgrounds for them.

Playground
No more having kids gluing their eyes onto electronic devices like IPads or handphone with YouTube on. Over here, they can just run freely about without any obstructions for the ground is soft and feel worry free, parents!

Fei Ji Qi Ground and makes me look so excited.

Menu
Schnitzel! Long awaited for! Its actually, Parmesan crumbled chicken schnitzel topped with ham, Napoli sauce and mozzarella cheese. Served with chips and fresh garden salad.

Chicken Parmigiana (Aussie Classic in Pubs) - $29
Well balance portion of cheese and slab of meat.

Yummy Food
The fish and chips were on an expensive side however these Beer battered fillet were fresh and big with chips, salad, pickled onions and lemon gribiche.

The Fish & Chip Shop - $28

Well battered Fish and Chips looked so yummy!
The entire place is like a beer garden but there are live band during the night. Enviornment is breezy and airy with good placement of fans blowing. What an ideal place to chillax if you have some extra to spend.

Sham Tseng Chan Kee Roasted Goose Garden Restaurant

Thanks to the colleague who brought us here for Hong Kong Famous Goose. Apparently after so many trips to Hong Kong, I have never visited such place and I guess without having a local to drive and introduce you around, its hard to even come to such a wonderful place. By words of the local, Chan Kee is arguably the most famous few restaurants in Sham Tseng and ah ha! that's why we were there!

Sham Tseng Chan Kee Roasted Goose Garden Restaurant
Being featured in one of the local programs in Singapore, Sham Tseng is actually an area in Hong Kong famous for its goose and along the streets, you can see a number of goose shops around. Business is rather competitive there I would say. Valet Parking is provided too.

Facade
The place is very traditional Hong Kong Chinese restaurant with rowdy environment, bustling with families and groups of people gathering over the table for dinner.

Winter melon soup was pretty cut in shape with jaws around its cirumference, topped with some seafood like prawns and crabsticks.

Winter Melon Soup
Being in the North Side for Hong Kong almost a week, I felt that the general behavior of restaurant staff was different from the central. However, I was wrong when I saw their culture surfacing in this restaurant. Servers tend to be frustrated and impatient but not to the extend of chasing us off after a meal.

Assistant
Portioning out the soup into bowls with similar and equal amount of ingredients, there is no doubt to say Cantonese are good in cooking soup. It was nutritiously good and refreshing to kick start a good dinner.

Bowl of Yummy Soup
This should be the best roast goose that we ever had in the week. It had a great flavour, crispy in skin and fatty parts were chewy. Best part that there was not any gamey flavour. Really to die for!

驰名烧鹅皇 (半只)
I dont really like prawns but this is exceptional. These prawns were plump and freshly steamed.

白海生虾
The only dish with more vegetables like broccoli and tasty shrooms. It was quite a simple dish without too much gravy.

北菇鲍螺扣掌翼
A Chinese meal will not be completed without rice or noodles and here's their Signature fried rice. Fragrant and each mouthful contained generous amount of ingredients, making it irresistible even with other dishes.

招牌炒饭
Loving this freshly steamed Hong Kong Style Grouper topped with scallion and coriander. Meat was soft and tender, soaked in soy sauce.

清蒸海石斑
Guess what is this? Some of us will be looking for this usually after a meal. I took this because it was so cute with Nissin instant noodle packaging on the tooth pick container.

Looking for Toothpick?
It was a gastronomic experience having tried the Goose at this popular area and I was rather thankful to be there. I dont mind to be back at the same place for such wonderful spread of food again.

Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant

Many thanks to the pals who managed to line up in advance to get the first few seats in Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant. Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant has been a talk of the town in the previous months and even till now, there are still die hard fans who don't mind queueing up for their delicious Unagi. To your information these queue can be more than 2 hours long.

The Queue Outside Man Man Unagi Restaurant
The queuing process is systematic, at least you wont see guys stomping into the restaurant once the door is opened. Service staff were well trained and will allocate your seats appropriately base on the number of pax.

For Catching the Eel
Near the doorway, you get to see large tanks with bubbles surfacing and pipes. Taking a quick look, I realize that these tanks are actually holding fresh eels that were imported from Mikawa Isshiki region, known for supplying the best freshwater eel in Japan.

Big Tanks
Not for the faint hearted but the prime seats are located at the counter, overlooking the kitchen through a clear glass panel, watching the process where fresh eels were prepared from scratch. It involves dissecting and barbecuing.

Cutting the Eels
Its quite a bloody affair and if you are not comfortable, its best not to have these exclusive seats.

Preparing the eels
The restaurant if quite well ventilated and you won't really smell like a waiting BBQ if you are dining in the restaurant. However, strong wave of smell do exist during queuing.

Barbecuing The Eels
Kudos to the staff at work as I felt that it will be very warm in there wearing black and standing in front of the hot BBQ pit.

Skewering
Drinks will be served from the counter right at the back of the restaurant.

Drinks Counter

Utensils
The Umaki was faint yellow in color unlike those we normally have, they were brighter yellow in color. The taste may not be as strong as the usual ones we had however, the piece of unagi that was being sandwiched in the Umaki had complimented the taste.

Umaki - $12.80
Have you wonder where does the Eel's bones gone to? Not to worry, it will not be wasted as they are also for sale as part of the sides. These bone crackers were crispy fried and crunchy to bite on. However one thing that I dont really enjoy is the used of the oil as it has a strong smell in it.

Unagi Bone Crackers - $6
Here comes what we were all waiting for, the Unagi bowl, Hitsumabushi. It contains Unagi Don with spices and dashi. The set looks very complete to freshly BBQ Unagi, soup, pickles, broth ans spices.

Hitsumabushi - $26.80
Indeed, its all worth waiting for. Man Man Unagi is best advocated for its deliciously prepared Unangi. The set can be eaten in 3 different ways, you can emjoy the unagi with seasonings, wasabi, nori seaweed, spring onions or pouring dashi (soup) from the little jug into the bowl and add some rice in it.

Delicious Unagi
Have you ever wonder where does your wasabi paste come from? To answer your question, let's have a hands on session on grating the plant on your own. They have provide a small grater and let you have a wonderful hands on experience obtaining your own.

Wasabi Plant
The difference in the usual size and the Large Hitsumabushi is mainly the portion of the rice and Unagi.

Large Hitsumabushi - $35.80
This large bowl is rather satisfying for someone who had been waiting in the queue.

Unagi
So what's the conclusion of Michelin 2017 restaurant? Some was rather disappointed by over rated Michelin restaurants elsewhere but I personally think the Unagi is seriously worth trying. Totally worth the calories and I won't mind coming back again.
